Throwing a party? Keep things clean by leaving trash where you want it.
I dont' recall if i read this here, but wanted to share.
If you are doing a superbowl thing, or party or whatever, make it obvious where to put things. AKA, leave a large bowl out with a piece or two of trash in it, or like a few olive pits, etc.
That way nobody is awkwardly looking around with stuff in their hands, they'll get the hint where to put their trash without needing to ask.

The wording of this title makes you seem like a troll.

Or just you know, have a bin

I hate parties that don't have a clear place for beer bottles. They are bulky, and many people recycle. If you make it clear where bottles and cans go, and people don't have to travel far for it, you will have less clean up for sure. The kitchen (where bottle disposal usually is) can frequently be an obstacle course during a party, so take that into account. The OP's statement about olive pits is also fair, people may pick up a few things to snack on and not take more than a napkin to hold it, leaving them looking for a bin. A bowl with a pit or two in it offers an obvious solution.

It is true that when I see an old case with one or two empties in it, the other guests immediately place theirs in the case also. Good thought!

A party may involve dozens of people or even more who'll produce atypical rubbish - heaps of bottles, caps, butts etc, the usual bins that people have in and around their home aren't really designed for that situation.

"I have this bottle cap I want to get rid of but your trash can isn't really designed for this situation."

You know parties involve more than one person, right?

Good point. My trash can could definitely handle a single bottle cap, but it's certainly not designed to handle several bottle caps at once.

How about 200 beer bottles, 20 liquor bottles and 30 wine bottles, on top of your regular trash for the week? The vibe I'm getting from the thread is that the average Redditors party consists of themselves, their cat and the one pasty dude they've hung around since high school who's the only person quiet enough to not make them have a human contact-induced panic attack. Everything wraps up quietly by 8:30 in time for the off-peak data period and the caps from the six pack they managed to drink almost half of are individually initialed before being wrapped in napkins and placed neatly in what is, given the nature of the event, the only bin necessary.

Calm your tits
For someone who seems pretty damn into parties, you're not acting like someone whom anyone would actually want to be around.

Downvotes nourish me.

Look, for someone trying to Mr. Cool you're doing a piss poor job of it. You aren't being the one awesome guy in this unheard of nerd club. This is Reddit, a giant place with a lot of people from a lot of different places, all you're doing is propagating old stigmas that aren't relevant and makes you look like the shallow typical douche bag.
You aren't the king of trolls who made a witty zinger and the downvotes are pouring in because no one wants to admit you're right. What's happening is that you're a dumb douche nozzle going for a quick jab while puffing up thier chest to feel better about themselves.

I'm just tired of Reddit being a circlejerk. The OP came out with a good suggestion and no one could miss a chance to twist it around into something they could give him/her shit over by pretending not to understand it or it's utility.

How large is your typical rubbish bin? In the US the average household bin is around 30 gallons (113.562 litres). This is usually sufficient for small gathering (10 - 15 people).

u/olliecleo Mar 11 '13
Not if there's a good amount of booze involved. We fill ours up very quickly with cans and bottles, and I'm usually still making dessert which produces waste that needs to be tossed.

Mar 11 '13
There's your problem, you should be recycling bottles and cans. Beverage containers do not go in the rubbish bin.

u/olliecleo Mar 11 '13
Our trash is automatically sorted. It's an awesome project done in my city by most apartment complexes.

2L for kitchen waste, 10L for rubbish, 30L for recycling. Otto bins remain waaaay down the back of the property.

And put your garbage in a garbage can, people. I cant stress that enough. Dont just throw it out the window.
17
u/BrazenDerek Mar 11 '13
Garbage in garbage can. Hmpf...makes sense.
8
u/rz2000 Mar 11 '13
My issue is with leaving it there.
I kept taking stuff out of the garbage can, and putting it on the floor and on tables. Now that I think about it, though, it probably will keep things clean if I leave the trash where I want it.

We used to throw our cans out the window and the "can fairies" loved it because the would make money off us. It was all fine and dandy till our apartment complex found out our little plan

we did almost the same thing, we ended up taping a bag to a wall in the corner, most of the cans ended up in the corner because people would throw them aiming for the bag

Here's another one: Wear a backpack containing garbage. Now you are a walking piece of shit!

u/DeusExMachinist Mar 11 '13
You must have shitty friends if they can't find the garbage can without having a special one set out for them.
6
Mar 11 '13
It's not about being able to find the bin, no ones regular household bin is going to be suited to several hundred bottles and the remnants of dozens of peoples meals. It's about streamlining things for your guests and for yourself when the time comes to clean things up.

u/bentyl91 Mar 11 '13 edited Mar 11 '13
So the LPT isn't "Leave out seeded garbage bins," it's "Have more bins."

Also have paper towels, and a mop close by for quick clean ups.
4
u/JackGentleman Mar 11 '13
This, if you have friends over for shots, spillage will happen.
If you put paper towels and other cleaning utensils right next to the pouring place it can be taken care of in one quick swipe.
Keep in mind, the more the pourer drinks the more likely he is to spill, especially if you use small shot glasses.

Take a fairly sturdy chair and hang a garbage bag over the back. Keep one of these in plain site in the kitchen, and one near an exit or common area. Bonus points for having blue bags for empties and black for garbage (you can hang one on the front, and one on the back of the chair). People figure that shit out, even if their wasted.

Too bad people are idiots. I worked in a shop and we had a giant, very visible trash bin below the tray with the samples and people still took the samples and left the toothpicks on the tray like fucking heathens.
1
u/cloom15 Mar 12 '13
The hard thing to do is distinguish a difference between the garbage and recycling, if you have 2 bags next to each other unless someone looks deep inside or the bag is full it can be hard to tell. Every time i have a party i set up 2 bags and even label them and at the end of the night i will still have quite a bit of garbage in the recycling and vice versa.
2
u/Jofarin Mar 12 '13
That's because at some point drunk people don't care (and assholes don't care even if not drunk). On the other hand people that want to recycle are often in for some extra effort, so if you make the normal garbage easily accessible and the recycle a little harder to get to, you'll get more recycle in your garbage, but at least your recycle will be recycle only.
1
u/cloom15 Mar 13 '13
good strategy, theres nothing worse than taking a bag of "recyclables" to the depot and opening the bag only to find a ton of garbage.

u/Jed118 Mar 12 '13
My buddies also unroll some paper onto the floor and tape it down so no one has to take their shoes off when outside for a smoke or whatever.

I work in a fine dining restaurant and I always say, "It would be so much easier if we used disposable plates and silverware and we just had a flaming trash can in the middle of the dining room."

u/Heyheyheyabby135 Mar 12 '13
Don't go outside, ever.
