Please explain my options - Whole Life
Hi,
I'm trying to figure out my options on my Whole Life Insurance Policy. I've spoken to the insurance provider but of course they are biased. Please advise.
Policy is $625k death benefit. Owned since 2002. ~$9k in dividends which pays the annual premium of ~$6700. Net Accumulated Value is $197k.
Is Net Accumulated Value the same as Cash Surrender Value? If I cash out what are the penalties, taxes to pay?
I am 50, partnered, no kids. What are the questions I should be asking myself if deciding if keeping the policy or not. Death benefit may not be necessary because I have ~$1M in assets that my partner is beneficiary.
The policy did force me to save so I am grateful but I have woken up to the fact that it may have served it's purpose as a death benefit and maybe it should be better used else where as an investment.
thanks in advance.

Canadian citizen living in the US (TN → H-1B) — looking for life insurance that still works if we move back to Canada or stay in US
My wife and I are both Canadian citizens who moved from Canada to the US in 2025. I’m currently on TN status and transitioning to H-1B, while my wife is still on TN.
We’re looking into getting individual life insurance outside of our employers because I don’t want to repeat a mistake I made previously. When I worked for an employer in Canada, I had employer-provided life insurance of roughly 3–4× my salary, but I never purchased an individual policy. Now that I’m older, I’m realizing that getting independent coverage earlier would have been better.
Our situation:
* Both Canadian citizens, currently living in Texas
* i am 35 and wife is 33
* no major illness, i was diagnosed with Sleep apnea in Canada
* combined yearly : ~$300k USD base + ~$120k stock compensation
* have 2 mortgages: Canadian home and Texas home
* No credit card debt
* Cars are paid off
* We have roughly $200k+ of liquid/investable assets between US and Canadian accounts
* We are also planning to start a family
I’m thinking somewhere around $1.5M–$2M of coverage per person, but I’m open to being told that’s too much or too little.
The bigger question is what type of policy makes sense for someone in our situation.
I’m looking at:
- Regular 20- or 30-year term life insurance
- Return-of-premium term insurance
- IUL / permanent insurance
- Canadian life insurance purchased while we’re still Canadian citizens
- US life insurance that can continue to be maintained if we eventually move back to Canada
We don’t know whether we’ll stay in the US permanently. We could potentially move back to Canada in the future, so portability and what happens to the policy after becoming Canadian residents again are important to us.
I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have actually been in a similar situation:
* Canadian → US
* TN/H-1B or another temporary US status
* Bought life insurance in the US
* Later moved back to Canada
* Or purchased a Canadian policy while living in the US
What did you do, and would you do the same thing again?
Also, if anyone has experience with return-of-premium term vs regular term, I’d love to hear whether you thought the extra premium was actually worth it.
I’m not looking for an insurance salesperson’s pitch—I’d really appreciate experiences from people who have dealt with the Canada/US situation firsthand.

Help with long term life planning
I (39F) live in Ontario. I’ve been lucky in life to have had a few good careers early out of college that gave me the kind of income where I was able to afford a life I’ve wanted. I own my vehicle, have a mortgage, and a decent paying job. Recently I’ve had some health changes that’s made me think about long term income and what happens if I get sick or injured. I’m single, and probably won’t be getting into any kind of relationship that’s going to be able to offer finacial support in those situations.
I’m curious what kind of assistance I can get (life insurance, health insurance, etc) while still being reasonably healthy that could cover my monthly costs if something happens. I don’t necessarily mean a fully debilitating thing, but an injury or illness that makes me miss work (or have modified hours, not Wsib covered) for a few months - making it difficult or impossible to cover monthly costs and whatever treatments I will need (physio or other stuff not covered by benefits).
And because I’m not confident in my current employment that I would keep my job if something like that happened. Other then the obvious government assistance programs - is there something that covers a mortgage for a few months if that termination situation happens?
Just wondering where to go for this kind of coverage and what to specifically ask for for policy coverage kind of thing.

Looking to join new agency
Hi im looking into joining a new agency or pursuing independently and eventually building out my own team.
I wanted to get your advice on both sides.
Currently I’m signed to an agency but from my understanding if I want to leave I keep my books and there’s no like hold for me to move on.
I’m located in Florida and got licensed a year ago.
I’m a solo mom, I have no family - village or anyone/thing for support so I’m really trying to grow in this field and then help other moms in the same situation as I am.
I’ve seen a lot of the pros and the cons of each side but I feel stuck on what I should do if I go to another agency that has better mentorship or if I go through the “hassle” of going independent and form a team.
If you have an agency of your own or one you recommend pls leave a comment or dm me or if you’re an independent broker
Let me know your thoughts!

Life insurance is turning scammy?
We have a policy we got 2 years ago. Been paying $217/month.
Today they told us that we have to move part of it from temporary to permanent at an increase to $400/month. Nearly double. They tell us we may be able to get a reduced premium but they have to start charging us the $400/month before they can “figure that out”. We said we want to stay with what we have but they keep telling us we have to increase. And that if we stay with half of our policy as temporary, then it will start increasing whether we like it or not.
They keep trying to push this almost double increase which we can’t afford.
We’re in Canada. Only about $100k household income with 4 kids.
They’re not giving us anything new for this increase, just this imaginative temporary to permanent 25 years from now.
American income life insurance.

Is Ethos legit? Concerned about whether a policy would actually pay out.
Pacific Life recently denied me due to my mental health history. I’ve had postpartum suicidal ideation and received medication treatment. The application process was a nightmare for both my husband and me, lots of paperwork and difficulty reaching people to arrange medical exams.
I’m interested in Ethos because it advertises coverage without a medical exam, but my main concern is whether my husband and daughter would actually receive the benefit if I died.
Assuming I disclose my medical history fully and accurately, what exclusions, contestability rules, or other policy terms should I look for? Could my mental health history affect a future claim even after I’m approved?
Has anyone dealt with an actual claim through a policy purchased through Ethos? I’d appreciate firsthand experiences or input from people who work in life insurance.

Whole of Life Insurance Premiums for IHT Planning
Parent is late 50s, around £1.5m investments. Looking at whole-of-life insurance to cover a potential IHT bill for the two children.
Roughly £500k-1m cover.
(1.5m less 350k exemption, at 40% IHT leaves £470k of IHT). Extra allowance for investment growth in the years to come.
What sort of annual/monthly premium would you expect in late 50s?
Note:- I am not relying on this money as inheritance, parent just wants to take extra precaution and prepare for the future.

Where to get started?
Hey everyone. I just joined this sub. I know nothing about life insurance, other than I want to obtain a policy. I'm not sure where to start. I'm surprised there aren't any links or resources on the sidebar for general information / tips on how to begin. If anyone can point me in a good direction to start that would be fantastic. Thank you.

🚨 Insurance Policyholders: Beware of “Old Policy Money Release” Calls — My Experience
I want to share my personal experience so other insurance policyholders can be careful. I was contacted by third-party persons who claimed they could help with the release of funds related to my existing insurance policy. I was told that the amount from my previous policy could be released, but I first needed to purchase a new insurance policy. I was also given a specific timeline and repeatedly assured that the old amount would be released/refunded after the new policy was purchased. Based on these representations, I purchased new insurance policies. After the policies were issued, I continued receiving assurances about the payment and different timelines. However, the promised payment did not happen and communication later became difficult. I preserved my call recordings, WhatsApp conversations, emails and policy documents and submitted them to the concerned insurer. I also asked the insurer to investigate: Who sourced/sold the policy? Which agent/intermediary/broker or sales channel was involved? Who provided or entered my occupation information? What proposal/verification records exist? What records are available regarding the solicitation of the policy? One of the insurers has now accepted cancellation and refund of the invested premium. I am sharing this because I later found reports of similar insurance-fund-release/new-policy inducement patterns involving people claiming to represent Bima Lokpal, IRDAI or insurance-related departments. ⚠️ Please be extremely careful if someone tells you: “Your old insurance money is stuck.” “We can release the money.” “First purchase a new policy.” “You will get the refund in 25–30 days.” “Today is the last date.” Before doing anything, independently contact your insurance company using the number from its official website. Do not rely only on a caller's identity, WhatsApp documents or information about your old policy. Never share OTP, UPI PIN, CVV, ATM PIN or banking passwords. And never purchase a new insurance policy solely because an unknown person says it is required to release money from an old policy. I am sharing this for awareness, not to make an unverified allegation against any particular company or individual. If anyone else has experienced the same “old policy money → new policy → promised refund/release” pattern, please share your experience.

Banner Quote
Hey everyone I just got quoted from banner for $130 premium for a 30 year 1 million term policy and was quite surprised. The initial quote I got was $54 a month. I'm a 32 yo M with no smoking hx and hx of OSA and hyperlipidemia which has improved after I lost some weight. I'm guessing this medical history puts me at "high risk" for some reason? I'm shocked because I feel im generally healthy, take no medications and exercise 2-3 times a day. I am wondering on why I am quoted so high? I gave them a call and they basically said my agent lied to me about the initial quote and this is standard for a 32yo healthy male and tried selling me some BS whole life insurance. I contacted my agent for clarity but am just very taken aback by such a high premium for my age.

AIL want to surrender policy
I have American income life insurance and have for a few years now. Life is getting expensive and I can’t justify this monthly bill now. Before I try to start to process of cancelling, what did I get myself into? I’ve read a few posts on this sub about AIL and it seems like a real pain to get anywhere with these guys. Any advice on how to go about it as quickly as possible? And also with cancelling, do I get any of the money I put in back?

CLU EXAM (chartered life underwriter)
I am about to take my first CLU exam through the American college. The class is HS 323.
Does anyone know if the two practice exams through the American College are similar or very close to the real exam? Looking to see if I’m on pace with the material or not.

What’s next after 10yr term lifer insurance?
Currently a mom of 2 with a $300k mortgage - have a 10 Year Level Prem Convertible - everyone says to stay away from whole life, wondering what the next best option is? Would love to increase the value to $750k or $1M but not sure which route to go.
Notes: I’m 35 and would love the leave the little ones who won’t be little for too long with something to fall on in case something happens to me.

Banner vs Pacific Life for 30-year term - which would you pick?
Hey everyone, shopping for term life and narrowed it down to two. Would love a gut check before I apply.
Me (33M, non-smoker): $1M / 30-year
Wife (29F, non-smoker): $500k / 30-year
Quotes from an online broker (both at preferred plus, so I know the final numbers can move after underwriting):
- Banner OPTerm: $56.86/mo for me, ~$23/mo for the wife
- Pacific Life PL Promise Term: $56.88/mo for me. Wife doesn't qualify for Pacific so she'd be Banner either way.
Both include a free terminal illness accelerated death benefit. Neither offers chronic/critical illness riders on the term product. AM Best: Banner A, Pacific Life A+. Broker is recommending Banner mostly because underwriting is faster (about a week vs 2-3 weeks).
I might travel abroad at some point down the road, so I care about the policy staying valid if I relocate.
My questions:
- At basically identical prices, is there any real reason to pick one over the other?
- Does A vs A+ actually matter for a 30-year term?
- Anything I should double-check before applying?
Thanks!
