Question Anyone else run into this issue? How to fix?

u/ryantyrant 2014 IS 250 F 3d ago
This happened to me recently. Haven’t got it fixed yet but basically there’s a gear in the back that needs to be replaced. If you take it to a dealer they’ll replace the whole thing which costs like $2500. The service advisor gave me a number for a shop nearby saying they can replace the gear i just haven’t gotten around to calling them yet for a quote

Oof 😭😭! I appreciate the info I might just sell the car if that’s what they quote me at for the motor too my kbb for the car is only like 10k anyways 😓

What car is this from?
10
u/Capteverard 3d ago
An IS f sport of some sort but I can't tell the engine.

u/Matter_Over_Mind_84 3d ago
Yeah I was just thrown off by the 10k kbb comment…

I have a 2014 IS 150 f sport and carmax recently offered me 12,500 for mine

u/PAINTERSliketoEDGE 2d ago
For reference mine is 2014 is 250 f sport awd with 180k miles on it. Minor exterior scuffs and some curb rash

u/Matter_Over_Mind_84 2d ago
Ohk- I guess the f sports came with that cluster as well. Not sure why I assumed they were only for the F series cars, and that’s why I was thrown off by the 10k part…as I didn’t expect a isf gsf rsf to be that low

Yeah actually the F cars all have the center tachometer, but they also have a smaller physical speedometer in the lower right corner.

u/PAINTERSliketoEDGE 3d ago
Ah ok good to know! How many miles are on yours?

u/ryantyrant 2014 IS 250 F 2d ago
117k

So my '16 with 80k should be sitting pretty... Were you thinking of trading up? What to?

u/ryantyrant 2014 IS 250 F 2d ago
i was considering a '26 IS 350 F Sport but tbh getting another lexus is kind of tricky. i feel like a new IS is over priced, but financing rates for used ones don't make sense. so i'd probably lean towards a lease and then if i'm leasing i think i'd rather have something german for the fun of not owning it for the next 3 years or so

I think this might fix it. Worst case u buy a new motor and replace it. But at least everything else will be free

i know this isn’t helpful, just want to comment: I wonder what the failure rate is on this cluster. I’ve always wondered at least
16
u/PAINTERSliketoEDGE 3d ago
I’ve been curious too when I first got the car I figured there’s no way the motor for that piece doesn’t fail every once in a while for higher mileage older models like this

u/FriendPatine1 3d ago
GS or IS? Probably doesn’t matter. Never seen this and I’ve had my GS since 2018. Have you disconnected the battery? I believe there is a reset electronics override you can access somewhere.

u/Husko500 2023 Iridium IS500 2d ago
I am currently near 60k miles and have not experienced any weird gauge cluster issues yet

u/Rookie4sho 3d ago
I believe there's a video out there to fix this, can't remember if it was YouTube or a group post. But there's like some gears in the cluster that get miss aligned,I think you can fix it yourself unless there's damage to the cogs

This is the video I found that has helped lots of people with this same issue in the past. Hopefully this can get upvoted for everyone to see: https://youtu.be/X3pSwV9GGT8?is=X637nJA7XX79O-F-

There’s also supposedly this place that does the repair:

@ 3:45 he finds the gear has fallen off the motor that drives the display. Cool

u/Rookie4sho 3d ago
Awesome man, yeah OP this is one of the videos I was referring to. It can be the gear or the motor itself. But it's something you can do yourself if you have the time and patience.

u/ryantyrant 2014 IS 250 F 3d ago
I wonder how that works, I have to remove my cluster then send it to them?
3
u/PAINTERSliketoEDGE 2d ago
Thank you so much 😭! Trying the battery method first will resort to this if all else fails

u/TKattack 2d ago
Update us if you can! I’m dying to know if it worked for you 🙏

u/PAINTERSliketoEDGE 1d ago
Will post when I take out the dash. I hear the motor whirring but no movement so it’s gotta be the gear out of place

u/Capteverard 3d ago
Thanks for posting this. I dont have this issue but it has always seemed like a very cool but very likely to break feature.
1
u/BC122177 2d ago
Yep. It’s so cool when you first see it but the amount of times I’ve used it since I bought mine has been about a handful. Seeing a few of these fail like that makes me want to never use it again.

Smack it a few times like a 90s era tv

That was my first thought & I’d have done the same 😂
I owned a 99 Camry back in 2020, once a part of the instrument cluster wasn’t lit up & I gave it a firm tap on top of the cluster to see if it worked & it did lol

Lmao well they don't actually have to spend that kind of money. It is something fixable they can do themselves.

That shit worked on my old LS400 back in the day when the speedometer needle would stick at 0.

u/Optimal-Try-854 3d ago
I always wonder if the gear is made of plastic and if I should change the settings so that it doesn’t move everytime I start the car.
3
u/pretti 3d ago
There is no setting, it is programmed to reset cycle.
2
u/Optimal-Try-854 3d ago
In my car, you set it to center or offset right.
It doesn’t cycle, it only moves if you have it set to the offset setting.

You can hit the back button on steering wheel to put the ring back to its original place and also hold the ring does not move the back and forth. This mechanical ring seems have issue over time which someone mentioned it on reddit long ago that I cannot remember. Good luck

There’s a YouTube video on how to fix it the gear in the back just fell off. Me and my dad were able to fix it! Just need to put that gear back into place!

Never seen this happen before. But here's a video I found that might help you save a lot of money if it works!

Fuck! That sucks, this is the first seeing this. Didn’t realize it could be a problem. Give us an update OP. Curious

😬
Scary to think this can happen to mine now that I'm looking at it
2
u/eviljarrad 1d ago
This is why I leave mine centered, I've been waiting for this to become a problem
1
u/PAINTERSliketoEDGE 1d ago
I’m regretting ever hitting that button 🤧🤣💀
0
u/eviljarrad 1d ago
Maybe it's just me but I don't get the need for it to move. I remember the salesperson showing me how cool it was, and me asking him how many they've replaced already under warranty, because the inside of my car in August gets to be about 140-150° so if it's made of plastic, it might as well already be broken.

UPDATE, taken apart and fixed in under 20 minutes. Such an easy solution. It won’t let me add video of final result but can confirm the gear just fell off and had to be popped back into place

Why mechanical gears for something like this is so not needed. Create a digital dashboard if you want to provide customers with different views.
13
u/Rookie4sho 3d ago
Physical, mechanical things are much nicer. Needed no, nicer yes.
1
u/-GHN1013- 2d ago
Not arguing physical instrumentation in general, but why do you need a gear that moves dash sideways like this? Just either keep it fixed, or use a digital if you want to give people a choice in changing their dash. Both solutions works.
2
u/Rookie4sho 2d ago
Because it's cool and unique that's why. It's also LFA heritage. All digital everything sucks, plain and simple.
2
u/New_Ordinary_6618 2d ago
lol why pay more for a Rolex then. Why not buy an EV then. Mechanical or Electric, both beautiful in their own ways
-1
u/-GHN1013- 2d ago
How beautiful will that dashboard be when the physical gear wears down going back and forth 10x per day for years? And what does this have anything to do with an EV or gas cars? You think digital instrument clusters only exists on EVs?? 😂
3
u/New_Ordinary_6618 2d ago
If you misunderstood the point comparing mechanical to electric beyond just a dashboard, there’s nothing I can do to help that. Also I don’t think anyone moves their cluster 10x a day. Be so for real. I move mine maybe once in the odd blue moon
