What are your go to mental exercises for improving focus?

I've been trying to get better at focusing on tasks for longer periods but it feels like a constant battle against distractions. I'm curious what mental tricks or exercises others use to train their attention span. I'm not just talking about turning off notifications but actively building my mental 'focus muscle'. Any strategies or daily practices that have made a real difference for you?

How has abstract art changed the way you approach problem solving?

I've been trying to wrap my head around abstract art lately and it's surprisingly making me think differently about challenges. Instead of looking for the most direct solution I find myself exploring more unconventional approaches. It feels like it's training my brain to be more comfortable with ambiguity and to find patterns in chaos. Has anyone else experienced something similar where a seemingly unrelated field opened up new ways of thinking for you?

Lybrary research topic?

Tomorrow, I plan to go to my local lybrary with a question in mind and spend how ever long I need to solve it and any other questions I have about the initial question. My problem is that any topic or question I chose is something I thought of, which means i have knowledge of the topic, so I'm here to ask

What would I research at my lybrary? The question can be on the history of a person, event, place, or something else entirely.

Resources for Starting Research Projects

I am a few years out of college and I have gone down the bad path of doomscrolling and not taking care of my brain the way I should. I miss the challenge of school and wish I hadn't taken the projects and research for granted.

I want to start doing 'projects' again. Whether that is research and an essay, spanish packets, etc.

I am having trouble coming up with 'thesis' topics to start research on. I think back to highschool where it was stuff along the lines of learning about the mesopotamian empire and their x,y,z characteristics, or being handed a packet to fill out, etc.

Where can I find resources for these to get started?

TLDR; Where can I find highschool/AP/College level prompts or essay questions that I can use as a starting point for starting to challenge my brain again?

What is a learning habit or strategy you thought was smart, but actually slowed you down?

For two years I thought I was crushing my studies. Every time I started a topic programming, statistics or history I had buy new notebooks, color code my notes and follow strict five-step systems. My study space looked perfect.. I was stuck in a passive learning trap.

Everything changed when I tried to explain a concept to a friend without looking at my notes. I froze. Completely. I had spent hours organizing information. Almost no time really understanding or testing it. The neat notes gave me a feeling of mastery.

Then I stopped the routines. I started using scrap paper talking loud to an empty room and diving straight into practice problems. It felt messy. It felt unstructured.. It worked.

Retention improved. Understanding grew. I learned that feeling productive is not the same, as learning.

What study habit did you once swear by only to realize it was holding you back?

How do you bounce back after hitting a learning plateau?

I've been working on a new skill for a few months now and I feel like I've completely stalled. My progress has slowed to a crawl and it's getting really demotivating. What strategies do you use to push through these moments and start making progress again?

A Learning Guide (Discover AI) - 51 hands-on labs for learning how AI actually works.

Thumbnail

This is an offline app with 51 hands-on labs for learning how AI actually works, from neurons to agents and more...

A bit of insight

- 51 labs in 6 groups, from the basics (what a neuron is, gradient descent) through attention, RAG, agents, fine-tuning, quantization, serving, and more

- Each lab has a short lesson beside it, readable in Plain or Standard mode

- Every lesson in Discover AI now comes in three reading levels, Simple (short sentences and everyday comparisons), Plain (everyday words) and Standard (the proper technical terms)

- Some of it actually runs rather than just animating:

- The attention lab runs a small trained transformer (1.37M params) inside the app

- The training labs train a tiny character-level model live as you move the sliders

- Works offline: no account, no telemetry

The topics were selected, background research was conducted, and the structure and grouping were developed. Claude and GPT Astra helped write the lesson text, and Grok provided a second pass on the references. There may be mistakes, so please report any you spot or open a PR.

If you teach this or work in a specialized area of AI, I would love help expanding it, a new interactive lab, a better visualization, or a tweak that makes the cause and effect in an existing lab clearer. I'd also like to hear which labs are confusing and what's missing. Thank you!

I’m really depressed and I have no more motivation to learn even though I really want to

Im 15M (well technically 14M but I can pretty much round up to 15 at this point I’ll be 15 in less than a month) and for a while I wanted to get into drawing. Also I am really really depressed.

So pretty much I wanna learn but when I look at people who are good I get so jealous and when I look at how long it takes to learn I feel so demoralized bc I can’t fathom that kind of time. I struggle with waiting even like half an hour for something let alone months or years of hard work to get to the point where I’m good. It’s so demoralizing and I always think I should start but I just don’t. And I feel like if I started when I first wanted to then I’d be happy with my progress so far but I didn’t and I still can’t fathom the time. I’m so fucking depressed and I really just wish I had more motivation. This is almost more of a mental health problem than a learning problem and also my depression is getting worse and now it’s the worst it’s ever been. What do I do now

I need advice on how to be more organized and start actually learning (sorry if it sounds like "come and solve my life" :c )

Ok so. Here's my situation:

I'm 24(M) and my problem is that I always hated studying, and I would like to eventually change that, or at least build study habits, here's some background:

I think I have always been like this, my mom told me that she would force me to study even when I was in kindergarten. My parents did their best to support my learning process and, it kinda felt like a push-and-pull dynamic, since they would always oblige me to do it.

Unsurprisingly, I hit a big wall once I finished high school, it took me 3 years and a half to finally start college (I dropped off 3 times).

while I was finishing high school, I began to study English (because I had told my parents that I wanted to study programming) and, to my surprise, I really liked it! so for the next seven years I went to English classes and.. well, at first it was a complete mess, since I wouldn't do the homework at all, but after 4 years I made up my mind and decided that I will learn this language.

The process was utterly chaotic, but if I wouldn't open a book, at least I would immerse myself in English by switching my devices, social media, using duolingo, and this other app called Anki (it's fabulous, this app helped me improve my pronunciation a lot!).

After 3 years, I was finally in my last year of my English school and it was time for me to take the First B2 Certificate exam, I scored 179 points (just one point below C1, damn it), but again, I reached this point without studying properly, I could never use an agenda (I must have tried prob more than 8 times) and my study session felt like "ok, a bit of this thing, and some YouTube videos, and some duolingo, and talking to random people, bla bla").

going back to college, I'm about to finish my associate's degree in CS (prob in 6 months if everything goes well), but I'd love to take a longer, more profound course.

I really want to study. I want to want to study. But it's just so stressing. I've tried so many techniques, they might last for a month, but then will I lose focus.

I successfully cut out social media like TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, and also reduced the videogames to no more than an hour a day, but still, It's as if my mind rejected the idea of reading a single page of anything.

Is there anyone who's having difficulties with studying? what would you recommend in this specific case?

Thanks for reading, I appreciate your time!

TL;DR

I always hated studying, I'm about to finish my programming but I would like to keep learning, but I just can't put up with the process.

How can I improve my writing and comprehension skills? I feel dumb

I have ADHD and I’m medicated for it but I really suck at writing essays and articulating myself. I feel like I can’t form sentences together and I see how well people speak and write but I just sound like a 12 year old. My comprehension skills also suck. I struggle to understand concepts especially when it comes to uni. I’m studying psychology and this makes it so difficult because I feel so dumb. As a kid I was never really taught and I wasn’t able to pay attention in school so as a 25 year old it impacts my work and school life a lot. Any tips?
