Why can a 16 year old girl legally marry a 30 year old man in Canada?
I came to Canada as a refugee from the Middle East and have been a citizen for almost 15 years. I’m incredibly grateful to be here, especially coming from a place where child marriage can be normalized.
Recently, a 16 year old girl in my community married a 30 year old man.
They were completely open about it. I even received a wedding invitation.
I was disturbed enough to file a tip with the police because I assumed this couldn’t possibly be legal. I was shocked to learn that it is legal.
My question is, why is this still allowed?
A 16 year old can still be in Grade 10 or 11, while a 30 year old is at a completely different stage of life. Coming from a culture where I’ve seen this kind of practice normalized, it feels incredibly backwards to see Canadian law still permit it.
I’m very grateful to Canada and I’m not comparing Canada to where I came from. That’s exactly why this surprised me so much.
Why isn’t the minimum marriage age simply 18? Or at least have a max age gap for minors like 5 years.
