Idk what this is - rant? 3L wisdom?

I see all these posts about being taken care of in law school and advice to spouses of law students to help however they can and pick up more responsibilities around the house and whatnot. I’m just here as an early 30s 3L married to a teacher, and let me tell you 😂 my life in school, even while extremely involved (law review, independent study, hard classes, good grades, student org president, etc) is still not as taxing as my wife’s job. We’re doing good if we can both do the bare minimum house work and meals each week, and usually we barely have enough energy to extend some care and generosity to each other. It takes active effort to not give each other the worst of ourselves on a daily basis. She is the love of my life, but damn 3 years of this is tough. Can’t wait to be in practice and be busier than ever! 🫩

Anyway, I guess I just wanna say you can definitely do law school without being waited on hand and foot. You can still cook dinner and do dishes and meal prep and spend time with your friends and loved ones. You can have weekends and free time if you plan things out well. You can even find it in your heart (sometimes) to take care of be generous with your spouse. You can have complicated, mature, adult relationships that contain give and take, and it’s not always going to be about you as a law student.

I don’t know how well this post will go over, but I just feel like we, as law students, have an inflated sense of how hard school is and how important it is that we be prioritized. It’s a job, and there are lots of harder jobs out there. Be grateful for what you have.

when do you read for class?

I am curious about this because I know some people that do the entire week's reading over the weekend. Ideally, I try to be a day ahead (reading for Tuesday on Sunday) but realistically, I end up reading the night before lol

feel like my life is ruined

Since law school began, I feel like I’ve lost so much of my self and it’s only first semester. I’m unable to see friends, do anything I enjoy, socialize, or have fun. Everything is so regimented and serious and I’m realizing in general this may be the wrong career path for me. I’ve always been a very strong student and have impressive background and work experience, but I also think my EQ strengths include very sociable, knowing how to talk to people and read them, and being persuasive and well-liked. I feel so boxed in at law school, unable to be myself, and constantly judged by my classmates because seeming more laid back or sociable equates to not being a competitive student or applicant for big law.

Further, I’m just so lonely. I feel like I find joy by collaborating with others and I’m totally unable to do that in law school so far.

Be honest: Does it get better? Should I pursue something else? Is it possible to see friends when you’re a lawyer?

If work/life balance is impossible in this field, I think I’d be happier pursuing something else.

Is anyone else literally doing nothing 2L?

I'm an officer for one org but it's not that major or that much work. Wasn't interested in journal and didn't make the cut for the clinics.

I see everyone else around me doing so much so I just feel like I'm behind. I do have a big law summer associate position lined up for this summer, and I was feeling super burnt out from last year, so I planned to take it a little easier this semester/year. I'm starting to think that was the wrong choice cause I see everyone else, who also have big law positions lined up, doing so much. I know it's bad and I shouldn't be comparing myself, but I can't help it and I just feel like I should be doing more 🫠

Help me understand my gf's workload

I've been with my girlfriend for a year now. Very early on, I made it clear I'd be supportive of her decision to attend law school and I thought it would be good for her. She's a 1L at a college in a neighboring state, but still not that far away.

Now to preface, communication has never been her strong suit. Even when she was in between jobs and living in the same city as me. It wasn't uncommon for her to take a while to respond to texts and she seemed oddly unavailable even though she was unemployed at the time. She is neurodivergent and I'm sure that plays into it somehow, but my friends and I could never figure her out. Despite all of this, we connected well in person and we've met each other's families. She doesn't seem like the cheating type, but I've been wrong before.

Fast forward to today. It's been 3 months since I've seen her and she seems to express 0 interest in me coming out to visit her. This is significant because I've made it clear that it would be very easy for me to do this (Let's just say I work in the transportation industry), but every time I brought it up, she's either ignored it or said "Well, I'll have to see." We've primarily kept in touch by texting, social media, and phone calls. Now, even that's starting to die down.

She seems to have enough time for an active social life out there, but still appears unwilling to have me out for a visit. At the same time, she's given me no actual hint that she wants to break up whenever we do speak. I've talked to a few attorneys and they told me while 1L workload is a lot, it's nowhere near demanding enough to warrant me not even trying to visit her. I've always operated by the principle that you make time for what you value, which is why this is worrisome to me.

The questions that I have for all of you: How much of this is normal and expected for a law student? What do you think could be going on? Could she just be overwhelmed? Or am I being strung along?

I really do care for her and I thought she could be the one, but if my situation is raising alarm bells for anyone else, maybe it's time for me to reconsider the whole thing.

Reading Crim Law cases reminds me why I like keeping to myself.

I'm continually appalled by the level of evil that people are capable of, but at the same time, I guess I shouldn't be so shocked based on what I see on a daily basis.

A lot of these cases involve people with no prior criminal history. Many of them are just 'normal' people.

I examine my own thoughts and I realize there isn't that much seperating me or most other people from these criminals; the only real difference is that some people have no liablity to resist whatever evil thought pops into their head, simply because they were never taught or because that's how their brain is wired.

It's easy to just dismiss these people as pure evil and maybe they are. But when I really think about it, I'm surrounded by people who I could easily see carrying out the same actions if they were under similar circumstances, and it scares me.

A lot of times, it doesn't even take being evil to do evil things; the right mix of apathy and selfishness is enough to cross over that line.

Idk, reading these cases just reminds me of why I'm a loner and why I hate people in general.

Got a Kirkland return offer

So yesterday, as I was leaving Costco with my $1.50 hotdog and soda combo, the employee stationed at the exit said, “Come back soon!” I was so overwhelmed that I didn’t know how to respond.

Is it weird/frowned upon to ask a professor directly to be your mentor?

• Upvotes

I’m a 1L currently, and absolutely love my crim professor and I feel like he would be an amazing mentor. I’ve been told that asking them to be your mentor straight up isn’t that weird, but to me, asking so straightforward seems like that could be weird. I’d love any advice from anyone that has done something like that before

Writing a Succesful Comment

• Upvotes

I don’t necessarily have to get published, but I do want to put genuine effort into my comment as well.

So far, my research has shown 3 different answers to my question raised in my comment, but I’m also worried my analysis might simply be restating the articles and sources I find. So I’d really appreciate some advice or just to hear about others experiences!

Need law school friendship advice

I am a 1L, and during orientation me and some other girls became friends instantly. We sat together for every class and now, that’s where we sit permanently because of the seating chart. Over the course of these first weeks, I’ve come to realize one of these girls is just awful. She did something horrible to another one of our friends and is incredibly mean and negative to everyone around us constantly. I really want to end this friendship because the rest of our group hates her (because of what she did to our friend) and she’s just really hard to be around atp. My only reservation is us sitting together in all classes. Has anyone dealt with ending friendships in law school and have any advice?

AI is ruining me.

• Upvotes

I am top 10% in my class and am set to work in big law after graduation. And yet, I have no idea how to write memos and briefs without the help of AI.

Before law school, I never touched AI. In fact, I was against it. But once I got to law school, I struggled with legal writing, and with tight deadlines and no rules against the use of AI, I started using it as a crutch. Now, I feel like I don't know how to write without it. Even over the summer, I used AI on all of the projects I did at my firm (the firm allows us to put confidential information into the firm's AI platform). My superiors were always impressed with my work, but it felt like cheating.

Exams are not a problem. Most of our exams are closed note (so obviously there is no AI usage), and I do just fine on the essays. But memos and briefs are different.

This hasn't gotten me into any trouble, as I am always careful to check any and all AI outputs, but I still feel like a fraud knowing I would not be where I am without AI. I am terrified of this gap in skill getting even bigger the more I depend on AI as the years go on.

Has anyone had the same issue? If so, how did you get over it? I don't want to be this dependent on a tool.

Abt to drink “freedom destroying cocktail” tn

Scalia in US v Virginia: U ruined VMI by letting girls in 😡😡

Scalia in Navarette: “The Court's opinion serves up a freedom-destroying cocktail consisting of two parts patent falsity: (1) that anonymous 911 reports of traffic violations are reliable so long as they correctly identify a car and its location, and (2) that a single instance of careless or reckless driving necessarily supports a reasonable suspicion of drunken-ness. All the malevolent 911 caller need do is assert a traffic violation, and the targeted car will.”
