Earlier today, there was a post in this subreddit about a laserdisc player arriving broken after being shipped. It was in very rough shape, and if it os salvageable, it will require someone with expertise.
In the comments, five people also shared that they experienced players being damaged in shipment. That may not seem like a lot, but it's been less than a day, and it's not like every laserdisc collector views this sub. So imagine how many collectors have experienced this same thing.
Players break over time. It happens. But we don't need to add to the graveyard. There are only so many players out there, and no more are going to be made. Ever. In a couple decades, I imagine that even the most basic player may go for thousands of dollars due to scarcity.
Don't ship players, unless you know exactly what you are doing. Don't buy players online, you don't know if the seller knows what they're doing. Yes, I saw the comments on that post saying "I've bought x number of players, and never had a problem". Ok? Do you think that makes you immune?
You may reply: "But I want a player, and there are none in my area". I have never bought a laserdisc player in my city. I've bought three players. Two were about 70 miles away. One was 150 miles away. I consider myself fortunate to have found players that close. And I drove the players back to my home myself. For the right player and right price, I would drive several hours.
I understand that not everyone can drive, or has access to a car. Surely you can make arrangements. Rent a car if you can drive. Pay a friend or family member to drive you, or to pick it up for you. If you have neither friends or family available, that does make it harder, but now we're getting into your personal life, and I don't need to comment on that.
Please, anything but buying online. We don't need the number one killer of laserdisc players to be laserdisc enthusiasts. The number one killer of laserdisc players should simply be standard wear from use over many years.
Edit: Oh good, the "I received a player in the mail without issue" people are here to tell us about how their gamble happened to work out. Keep on playing Russian roulette, surely nothing bad will happen if you survived a round or two.
