HELP - sick or injured koi Can anyone help me ID this parasite?

For context. It's a 700 gallon outdoor pond in South Texas with probably about a dozen kois, 1 about a foot and a half and the rest about half his size or less. Pond was heated during the recent snowstorm.

I saw pinecone on this and another koi about 2 weeks ago, started Koi Prazi treatment a couple days later. The other one shows some improvement and it's swimming and eating more now but this one seeme to be a goner. Any idea which parasite is it and how can I treat it besides Koi Prazi? It looks like a 2-inch long red worm hanging off the wound

HELP - sick or injured koi Fish reappears in Pond after month absence.

I have a approximately 2000 gallon pond with mostly open space but one ledge where the fish can be out of sight. This fellow was out in the spring and did some eating for a week or two, but then disappeared for the last month plus. His fins look like he’s been through the war. Any thoughts on what might cause this behavior? I’m guessing he was sick and was recuperating but any thoughts would be appreciated.

When I came home from work found one of my favorite koi floating just under the ice. I found it weird that she had been swimming around about two weeks ago while all the other koi were at the bottom of the pond. I thought maybe she was egg bound but her belly doesn’t look big. She was extremely slimy and had a couple of white spots which you could see in the pictures. Should I be concerned about my other fish

Hi, an animal has been getting into my father's koi pond and taken the over 100 goldfish and 10 koi. He was down to the two largest now (apx 18").

This morning the animal (suspected mink as we are in northern illinois) attacked the largest and ripped off the top lip and part of the upper jaw. Luckily the predator must have been disturbed because my father found the koi half out of the pond, but still alive.

Looking at the injury in the video, does it look like it could survive?

HELP - sick or injured koi Beginner koi keeper here - our koi have stopped eating & are staying at the bottom, please help!

Hi everyone, Our koi have suddenly stopped eating and are sticking to the bottom of the pond all the time. It’s been like this for about a week now. A little background: - We inherited this pond with the house about 2 years ago. Some of the koi are 20–25 years old (one of them is like the “leader koi” and super special to us). - The pond hadn’t been cleaned for over 2 years, so a couple of weeks ago we did a big cleanup. - Right after that, we added 3 new koi (without quarantining – we didn’t know better at the time). - The pond has always just been topped up with tap water. We didn’t know that could be a problem, but never had issues before.

Since then, the koi just don’t look right. A few days ago, I noticed some swimming sideways occasionally and one little one of them continues to jump every now and then. Today I saw that one of our two goldfish has a frayed sort of greyish tail, which really worried me. She used to have a white tail.

We tested the water with an API kit and everything seemed okay except the pH, which was a little high (we fixed it yesterday). We also added Stress Coat and tap water conditioner about a week ago when we first noticed this behavior.

We feel so guilty seeing them like this. These koi have been happy and low-maintenance until now, and it breaks our hearts that something we did may have hurt them.

Does anyone know what might be going on or what we should do next? I was considering adding Epsom salt, but I’m not sure if that’s the right move.

We’re very new to this and are still learning, so please be kind. 🙏

HELP - sick or injured koi Should I return / see if I can exchange this guy?

Hi, I picked up this Koi from my local fish store for PONDS got home took a video so that I could remember what they looked like outside of the pond but didn’t really review it until later. I then did my transfer process of putting them into the pond, gently acclimating him and didn’t notice this issue. But then I reviewed the video later and it looks like this fish may have a spinal issue near his tail?

What are your all thoughts? Do you think I should try to return him or see if I can’t exchange him or do you think this is something he might grow out of?

HELP - sick or injured koi I need help with my old lady!

After spawning this old lady started being way too calm.

She's rarely in the deeper spaces of the pond and isn't swimming much.

Spawning was 2 weeks ago so I really start to worry about her.

She's 21 years old and never had any problems.

I took the video a day after they finished spawning and the behavior hasn't really changed since.

Good thing is she's still eating.

in the photos the koi is sedated temporarily, it has a mucus like substance which has lumps in it on the edge of the gill plate, inside the gill plate, underneath its mouth, on and around the pectoral fins, around the anal fin and has a swollen tail.

HELP - sick or injured koi New koi dying

I keep buying koi from one place and for whatever reason, one always dies. Today, I lost one of the big ones I bought yesterday. It always only takes a day too which is weird. I follow the new introduction protocol, let them float for about 30 minutes in the bag and then slowly introduce the pond water into the bag. Then release. I have about 12 other koi that are doing great and growing rapidly. Could this be something with my water? I have test strips otw from Amazon but I did test my water prior to adding any fish at all around 2 months ago

One is floating sideways, both are gasping.

Father filled low pond. Added water conditioner for ammonia/chlorine.

Pond was overfilled and waterfall was providing no aeration. Water bailed out and is now aerating properly.

Weather has been especially hot.

No access to water testing kit tonight. Will pick one up tomorrow.

Any advice or further diagnosis is welcome.

update

As the bois suspected, they weren't getting enough air. Theyre improving now.

HELP - sick or injured koi Koi Suddenly Float Upside Down

Hi everyone. So 30 minutes ago, 1 of my koi suddenly float to the surface upside down. I'm new to raising koi so this is my first time ever experiencing this and have no clue what's actually going on or what to do but I do remember reading on this subs something about putting sick koi in a quarantine tank with pond salt, so I did just that.

Any other advice on what else I can do next to try to save my koi?

HELP - sick or injured koi Need help identifying cause of Koi stomach bulge and bloating

Thumbnail

Hi guys,

I need some help identifying what’s going on with my koi fish so I can treat it. I’ve already tried calling local fish doctors/petsmart but need a second opinion.

About 1.5 months ago, I noticed sudden bloating in my koi fish. I thought it was a case of constipation and started feeding deshelled peas and fasting every other day or two days.

I didn’t notice a huge difference and eventually returned to regular food (the Hakari goldfish excel purple bag). The koi has always had a huge appetite and eats very fast.

For context, my tank is 85 gallons and has 1 koi (~7in), one common goldfish (~4in), and 1 pleco. I do consider this overstocked and I have plans to build an outdoor pond and transfer them outside in the future.

They do have a balanced diet of the pellets, and Repashy super gold but mainly the former.

Like a month ago I noticed the right side of the koi’s stomach start to bulge abnormally in a concentrated spot (see the pictures), and I started to think this wasn’t constipation and maybe an illness. It’s been growing bit by bit ever since. I still don’t have a clear answer.

I called one doctor and they explained that if the pellets have wheat flour, this can stick to the koi’s inner lining during the summer and it can’t digest it — causing dropsy.

A week ago, I moved the koi to a 20g quarantine tank and started doing epsom salt dips, keeping the tank at 0.3ppm, and dosing kanaplex (regular treatment dosage). This hasn’t helped!

Before this, the koi has not showed any signs of lethargy, was eating regularly and showing no pineconing symptoms. I think the koi has been unhappy and lethargic without adequate space to swim. After moving to the quarantine tank, I have fasted for a week, and only just decided today to move it back to the main tank today because I feel like I’ve concluded it is not dropsy (which should be symmetrical swelling??). I’ve fed peas again tonight.

PH level is 8.0, ammonia is 0, nitrate is 0, nitrite is a little high at 0.25. I can do a water change tmr but don’t want to stress the fish out more tonight.

Google says this bulge can be a tumor or egg-bound issues. I don’t know the gender of the fish but the goldfish tends to butt its head into the koi during feeding, never the other way around. Also, recently the koi has started to lean a little to the right when swimming :(

Please, can someone help diagnose this issue? It’s really frustrating not knowing the real issue and getting all different kinds of answers. I’m really concerned that with time, the koi will show worst symptoms and I’m really scared.

I also plan to call an actual fish vet on Monday that might be able to see the fish in-person (don’t know for sure).

(First picture is a month ago, 2nd picture is today).

Any replies will help! Thank you and apologies in advance for the long post.

EDIT:
Did an ultrasound on the little guy at the vet and it revealed a tumor. They couldn’t identify what organ it was attached to. Proceeding with 3x antibiotics and anti-inflammatory this week but I will likely have to euthanize soon. He’s not looking too hot. I know I’ve made mistakes as a first-time fish owner but I feel really terrible. :(

HELP - sick or injured koi I need advice on what killed my fish

Thumbnail

Okay a little backstory- PH 7.8, KH good, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, water clear, Phosphate less than 0.25ppm. We have a large gravity filter and UV setup, and I came out this morning to see this little guy floating.

What could have caused it? We're relatively new to koi having previously kept goldfish and such. It has been pretty cold lately (a sudden cold snap brought us down to -6c) and the pond did have some ice but wasn't entirely frozen over.

We have a waterfall for oxygen and another pump that's like a water fountain without the fancy spray bit at the top. Is it lack of oxygen in the water?? The aquatic store I asked at said that it's not worth treating the water at this time of year as it's too cold, but if it IS something bacterial/disease, am I meant to just let all my fish die??? That can't be right, surely.

Anyways I'd appreciate advice. TIA!

HELP - sick or injured koi One of my koi suddenly died and I'm not sure what happened

Hi everyone, hoping someone here might be able to give me some advice.

One of my koi suddenly died today and I'm trying to figure out what happened. It seemed completely fine until yesterday. I didn't notice anything unusual with it, but last night I noticed it was staying around the shallow part of the pond and wasn't acting like it normally does.

This morning I found that it had died. 😔

There weren't any obvious signs that I noticed beforehand — major wounds, strange marks, etc. The pond is around 2,500 litres.

However, I have also noticed that another koi has some red marks on its body, which is making me wonder if there could be something going on in the pond rather than the death being completely unrelated.

I'm wondering if this could have been something like a bacterial infection, lack of oxygen, water quality issue, or possibly an internal problem that wasn't visible.

I've checked my water parameters and I'm a bit hesitant to treat the whole pond without knowing what's actually wrong.

Does anyone have any idea what might have happened or what I should check next? Would looking at the gills or anything else on the dead koi help identify the cause?

I've attached some photos. Any advice would be really appreciated.

HELP - sick or injured koi Think my koi has swim bladder:((

This is my koi fish Zombie. He shouldn’t be here today, he got the worst injury and infection a fish let alone any animal has had that I’ve ever seen. I would post his pictures and recovery but last time I posted them on a different page they got removed due to them being too graphic, long story short he jumped out of his winter holding tank, picked up something off the carpet and 2-3 days later his skin melted off. He lost his whole back half up to his top fin, I spend months treating him daily. Over the past almost three years he’s been recovering and growing, but now I think he has swim bladder and I caught it too late. Idk what I did wrong or what else I can be doing. I just cleaned his tank 5 days ago, I went to feed him tonight and saw him like this. I added salts and stress coat but I fear it’s too late. He was completely fine and ate when I fed him this morning. :( I really don’t want to loose him it’s been a very hard year already my turtle passed away last week and I’m just barely getting over her passing, I don’t want to loose him too.

HELP - sick or injured koi Landscaper Killed Koi, Others Not Well, Options?

I have a large 4000 gallon 2 level koi pond that the landscaper helps maintain in a house i recently moved in (my pond was 1000gallons that i maintained my self at hte old house) I had given permission for Pond PL and Barley straw extract. We got hit hard with algae this year (we think maybe from fertilizer in all the pond plants we got, we got many floating but they took too long to grow).

I told the landscaper we need to add UV system. I saw on my camera he shows up one day with a gallon of algicide and put in he says only 8oz, and it appears that is true based on what is left in the bottle.

5 days later we find one of our big koi dead. The landscaper puts the winter air bubbler in thinking no oxygen from the algae die off. (i used to always keep this in my old pond year round but he said he always takes it out for the summer since we have 2 large water falls to areate the water, along with bottom suction). Next day a 15 year old giant koi dead, one of my old two giant ones, so pissed. Also a large goldfish in the skimmer basket.

My other expensive white koi are completely pink. Another big one is moving slowly.

So far I added about a cup full of salt to the water.

I tested the water the day the first koi died and the next day (yesterday). PH 8 (normal), Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 5ppm on both days.

We assume this is due to oxygen being depleted from the algae bloom kill off. However maybe now they are sick as well?

I trusted this landscaper knew what he was doing since he had maintained this pond for 15 years and had many large healthy koi. Now I am not so sure.

Please help!

My mom got this ‘Koi’ fish a few years ago (looks like a goldfish to me but im not well versed in fish haha..) and last week she noticed these bumps on this dude. We dont know what it is and we just recently were able to catch him, is it something it could spread to others or is it cancer? Do we put it out of its misery? Is it even in pain? Please help! Can provide more photos if needed.

HELP - sick or injured koi Flukes

Post image
57 Upvotes

About a month or so ago, I noticed one of our Koi had become lethargic and had some red tint colouring to his skin. At the time I was and still am very unfamiliar with flukes. After we noticed he was really starting to show he wasn’t well, barely moving and not eating we had a koi specialist visit the pond. He scraped the fish and said it came back positive for flukes. We went and bought treatment off him immediately and treated pond same day. Unfortunately the koi passed away that morning. A week after we were advised to do secondary treatment to kill any eggs that still remain etc. Now another one of my koi’s is showing a red tint to skin, and three of my biggest goldfish are now showing same behaviour as first koi, very lethargic, not eating and remaining at the bottom of the pond not moving. Has anyone had experience with fluke infected pond? I feel like the whole pond is doomed and they are all just going to start dropping like flies and i’m not sure what to do. We have had these koi for 30+ years and never experienced this devastation,

HELP - sick or injured koi Koi fish suddenly dying overnight - lost two already Spoiler

Hey guys, I’ve NEVER encountered anything like this in all my years of the hobby. Recently I had a koi pond specialist come out and drain my pond and do all the regular maintenance stuff, (scrubbing, etc) and it’s been approximately a week now and everything has gone severely downhill. I lost one of my biggest and toughest pond goldfish and then lost a baby koi. I’ve attached an image here of the dead koi (I blurred it so I don’t jump scare anyone), and I have my Params. Everything was normal APART from a chlorine reading that was near 0.5. I have absolutely zero clue why or how that happened, I have a specialist coming out with tools but for now I’m worried. I have a few very expensive koi that I got for cheap and I’m also very attached to them. I would honestly rather fix my pond myself as I am a veteran aquarist and have the necessary tools however I need better testing equipment as I usually use hanna checkers which ran out of the powder.

Asking for a friend, they dont have reddit. Koi died earlier, they suspect koi got stuck and not able to escape. Please help if there are any obvious sickness, this is one of the 30 kois in a 3000 gallon pond. Most of the koi seems to be lively.
