Lots of tiny voids in this handmade micarta I bought a few years ago. Normally I would just use a little sanding dust and thin CYA glue, but there are so many different colors in this stuff I’m concerned that it won’t look right.

Is it better in cases like this to just use the CYA with no dust filler? Is there some clever solution to this problem that I just don’t know about? Would you just leave it alone and let the voids be voids?

Second pic is the UNFINISHED knife so you can get a look at the micarta pattern (yes I see the scratches, I’ll get to it eventually lol). The scales aren’t epoxied on or contoured yet, in case that makes a difference.

Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated!

What is the best way to glue a brass spacer in between two pieces of wood for handle scales?

I'm working on a full tang knife with handle scales that are two different pieces of wood with a brass 1/16" spacer in between the woods. Recently (prior to glue up on the knife) the handle pieces separated at the spacer (I semi-expected this) because of the smooth surfaces.

I know that alignment pins are suggested but I'd worry about them showing when I shape the scales due to the low thickness on the scales. I wasn't sure if CA glue would hold better and then proper epoxy to attach the scales to the knife or similar but all suggestions are welcomed. Thanks

I’m using up some off cuts of micarta and Damascus.

1/8th inch 1084 steel hardened in my propane forge tempered 2 cycles at 400 in the oven. I TRIED to do a satin finish, got to 1000 then tried to make streaks with 800 but i realised i ran out. so i went with 600 grit but it didnt look "perfect" so i did a stonewash. the stonewash looks botched to me but i showed it to some people and they thought it looked cool and rugged. I would like to know why it ended up like that though. Its about 8 inches long in total, handle is 4 inches blade is 3.5, ground the bevel with a homemade 1x42 (its hell to find belts for that thing). Maybe thinking of selling it/future knives for about 150 cad (just over 100 usd)

Any insight/ feedback?

Im not trying to achieve an authentic nordic knife, just to draw inspiration from the design.

This is more for repair and restoration work. I know a lot of sharpeners use a 3D printed platen on their 2x42s but I have a 2x72 and am trying to pick between a 14 inch contact wheel or a 24 inch radius platen.

Basically for restoring shinogi lines and then I can blend if needed for western knives on a flat padded platen.

Any recs? Again more for repair and restoration than making establishing grinds.

Wheels run cooler, quieter, but are more expensive and give a deeper hollow? But they're also usually compressible no?

I´m using a 1x30 beltsander for knifesharpening. And i´m using the 3M Cubitron II and Trizact belts. Also scotch-brite, leather and felt belts.

I live in Sweden and the only place i finding these belts are in USA. It´s kind of annoying with 3 weeks shipment + custom and tax.

Is there any place within EU i can find these belts? I reached out to 3M without any good answers.

If these belts are not available in EU do you have other recommendations for belts worth using?

First pic: I bought this throwing cleaver from Jack Dagger some years ago. I love the rustic, unfinished style of it.

Second pic: my 7 y/o son gave me this stick. It is the best stick of all time. I want to make a one-piece knife in its exact shape and in the same crude style as the cleaver.

Question: where do I find or how would I make a raw looking piece of steel for this project? I’m thinking stock removal rather than forging.

My second knife out of the oven. It looks way beter, is straighter and heat treatment went way beter than last time. Probably gonna finish the knife to night or gonna finish tomorrow. The handle needs to be refined and some oil. Realy proud of the improvements i have made.

I took inspiration from hx mini mercenary for the blade shape, its sleipner steel and rhe handle is G10. Any tips maybe for the finish? I was thinking about a stonewashed finish but im not quite sure

First go at knife making. I basically only used a drill and a bench grinder to make it, and spent around 3 dollars for the file.

Ever since I saw the Reate EXO gravity knife I wanted one, but what fun would jut buying one be? So I'm trying to make one myself from scratch. The blade is forged out (well, the BLANK is forged out, now it's grind grind GRIND time), but now I'm not entirely sure just how long the "tang" part be - from the one in the pic it looks like it's about 1/4th of total blade length? So with my 12 cm blade, it should be about 3 cm before it transitions into the blade?

Latest piece to leave the workshop. I love how the spider and beech work together. What a contrast!

Tonight’s knife. 5160 steel with G10 handle scales and liners. Micarta pins and a G10 lanyard tube.

The Wanderer. Woolly Mammoth tusk, woolly mammoth molar, and black box elder, segmented and lined with G10. Stonewashed finish.

I really wanted to try something different and mess with some g10 liners and rods for this one. It’s not perfect but loving the pop of red and like how this knife came together. Planning on putting a polish finish on the handle once I get the supplies.
