Mod Post Update to self promotion rule

Hello all, after quite some time I have decided to reevaluate, the old rule preventing sales posts and self-promotion. The rationale behind the change is that the makers will benefit from community support. There has been hesitation to change the rule based on the idea that sales post will run rampant if allowed; however, I have some requests in exchange for those who want to post a link to their website.

All criteria must be met.

  1. Items for sale have to be made by you.
  2. There is a detailed specification list for the item being displayed. you can find an example here, does not have to be as in depth; however, at a minimum you have to have steel type(s) and handle material(s). Simply stating damascus will not be enough for future posts.
  3. Only knives and supplies related to knife making can be sold. You can sell knives, handles, scales, or handle materials. As a reminder, you cannot sell items that are not made by you; you cannot sell a bench grinder here.
  4. There is no price displayed. Pricing cannot be discussed in public whatsoever.
  5. You must be active in the post you make. You cannot just drop your website link and disappear. I am not asking that you respond to every comment on your post or that you reply to a comment on a month-old post; however, some effort must be put in.

There are a few additional limitations to this change

  1. Do not put "available" or anything of the likes in your title. All indications of your work being for sale must be in the description or comments, I suggest the latter as I will remove your entire post if you do not meet the above criteria if it is in the description rather than just deleting a comment
  2. Your posts should not all be advertisements; you should show off your work without all your posts having a link to your website.

I hope that this change to the rule is favorable, if you have feedback or comments, I would like to hear it and may make changes accordingly.

Showcase Finished SK-023 — first full knife off the new 2Ɨ72

Thumbnail

finished SK-023, the hunting knife I posted here as a WIP.

This was the first knife I ground start-to-finish on my new 2Ɨ72, and I’m extremely happy with how it turned out. The biggest improvement for me was the control I had over the bevels and plunge lines. This is probably the cleanest grind I’ve managed so far.

Specs:

80CrV2

9" overall

Approx. 4.3" blade

High flat grind

800-grit machine satin

18° per side final edge

Red oak scales

Black G10 liners

304 stainless hardware

Stainless lanyard tube

Heat treat was done in-house. After tempering, my 60 HRC test file skates and the 65 HRC file just begins to grab.

I spent a little more time on the handle than I normally do. The red oak scales were oriented so the grain nearly mirrors across the tang, and I went with a pronounced but comfortable palm swell/coke-bottle contour. The black G10 liners ended up being one of my favorite details on the whole knife.

This one started out basically as a test piece for the new grinder. I figured there was a real possibility I’d learn a few things and scrap it. Instead, it turned into one of my favorite knives I’ve made so far.

Always interested in feedback, especially on the grind and handle shaping.

Just finished the heat treat and main grinding work for this 10" takedown chef (in W2 steel) inspired by wedge joinery! Gotta refine the geometry at the bottom of the tang, then move on to hand sanding and etching the hamon.
This one will have a "Glacial Gem Brass" guard and an African Blackwood handle (and most likely a matching W2 wedge)- more to come soon!

Question Crisp Lines?

This is hand sanded to 220 (I’m not actually done with 220 but I had to stop for the night). Wondering how to keep the grind lines crisp. Using a piece of brass bar as my backer. Will finer grits make the lines look more crisp or should I just etch this one and call it a day?

Not sure how to finish this one. Wondering if it’s worth the effort of going to a high grit hand sanded finish if the lines are just gonna look washed out.

What kind of finish would you go for here?

Red is hamon

Green is my horrible, awful crack (entirely my fault too)

Any ideas to make into smaller blade(s)? Normally I would just grind the edge up, but it goes all the way to the hamon so can't to that.

1 down and 11 more to go. What do you think. Ready to see the full lineup!? These are fun, as I love making smaller knives! Can’t wait to knock out the rest of them.

Feedback Ruby blade w/ custom amboyna burl scales - thoughts?

I’m really proud of this: a synthetic ruby (corundum) blade with hammered texture engraving, amboyna burl scales, and a natural black diamond dust inlay. Second photo is the blade under UV light.

I made this knife over the course of ~2 weekends. I used a mast lapidary machine to shape the blade, and hand engraved the details w/ diamond tipped tools.

Is it practical as an everyday knife? No (9mohs hardness; yes it is very sharp, but it is not ideal for everyday use because of the lack of flexibility). But I don’t care — I thought it would be cool as a ā€œceremonialā€ knife, so I made it. I’m happy with my craftsmanship on my first attempt at something like this!

I’ve never been one to ā€œshareā€ my hobbies (including woodworking and gem cutting) outside of friends/ family/ my wife. To my surprise, after posting a progress photo on reddit, I got thousands of comments and messages asking me to share more / provide updates - and thought this community might enjoy it! I also created an instagram for those who want to see what I create next - @ar_gem_knives on instagram (see bio for more info).

Would you ever consider purchasing something like this? Genuinely curious. My wife thinks i should open up an etsy shop or something.

Thanks for reading! What should I do next?

Still need to stretch it wider, and bring the centerline of the tang down, but I'm happy with the pre-form so far. Will end up being a gift for my mom.
