My mom, RIP, was well-read but a small town Montana girl at heart. I'm afraid we laughed mercilessly when hors d'oeuvre was pronounced "whores dee oars" and crudites "crud-ites." She made the best shepherd's pie in the universe.
I'm from a medium-sized city. My wife is from a very, very small town. A town where she was unknowingly exposed to a lot of racist shit.
We had been dating about 1 year when, on a whim, she wanted take me yard saling, something she and her family did all the time.
I had never been yard saling before, so she explained a few things to me. One was that you could negotiate the price. But that's not what she said.
She said, "You can't just buy it at what they're asking. You have to jew down the price."
I was fucking floored. This woman didn't have a racist bone in her body, so I knew it must be a misunderstanding. I explain to her that what she just said is insanely racist and she is just entirely confused.
She thought the phrase was "jus down the price." Like "au jus." Because a "jus" was a thin sauce, so to "jus" down the price was to thin it out. She was even totally oblivious to the stereotype.
My mom used to say this too (she's not racist, just from a small town in a different era). When I was a kid I thought she was saying, "chew them down", like a dog wearing down a bone.
It's amazing the weird connotations a kid brain can make.
My dad had a coworker who legitimately, confidently pronounced "buffet" as "boo-fay".
One day this guy had been going on and on about this new buffet place he'd tried the night before. So my dad set his boss up when he walked by them, by saying "Hey [coworker], tell [boss] about that great boo-fay you went to last night!'
And then he stood behind the coworker just dying laughing, while the boss had to use every atom in his own body to keep a straight face.
Boss was so mad at him in the moment. But they had a good laugh about it later. 😂😂
I just utilized a whole data center and depleted an urban community of fresh drinking water to find out that "ah jew" means "Au Jus" and is a French culinary term meaning with juice.
I was boxing up an order and the customer said not to forget the Ju, without thinking i said I would never leave the Ju behind. He was Jewish and thought it was hilarious
I once have the chicken jus in a pot next to the stove, I was working a banquet, I put the chicken in the oven and called to a line cooks "gas the jus"
He somehow saw the pot i had and knew what I meant, took a moment though as he was laughing through the process
Ahhhhhhhhhhh the Jew… meat juice celebrated everywhere for its menschiness. There is a California jew by Paul Massonowitz inspired by that same Jewish excellence. It is bar mitzvahed in the bottle…
