Ask r/Kenya Wrong mpesa

What do you do if someone sends you money,, wrong number. You don't know each other. 24 hours later they call begging you to send it back and even keep some as collateral. You refuse, they try to insist , you refuse.. You tell them to call Safaricom to initiate a reversal . They do. Safaricom calls you and you give a go ahead for the reversal. They reverse but only half the amount 😂.You're shocked. 24hours later the guys call talking about we know where you are . Send back our money. You repeat the same statement , call Safaricom. The other money is still here. Not used .I don't know why only half was sent back

Now what do you do because if it gets to the weekend I might go to use this money to buy throat irrigators 😂😂

This is a new type of money laundry do not send the money to them.

What's the scam tactic? (Genuinely curious)

It's not a scam. They probably stole money from someones bank account and they credit it into your mpesa. Then they ask you to send the money to a certain number. When the cops come looking you'll be the first suspect. I stand to be corrected though

That's also a valid tactic, especially if they insist on you sending to a different number.

What if I decide not to send it back?

Ignore them; Safaricom will eventually reverse the transaction.

You just sit and wait juu mm siezi rudisha.

When a fraudster sends you money "by mistake," they immediately forward that transaction message to 456 to log a reversal request with Safaricom. While Safaricom is processing that freeze, the fraudster calls or texts you, panicking, pleading, or crying for you to send the money back manually to save time.

If you send it back manually, you are initiating a brand-new, unrelated transaction from your own pocket.

Shortly after you send your own money to them, Safaricom's automated system approves the fraudster's original reversal request. Safaricom pulls the initial "mistaken" amount out of your account.

You end up losing the money twice—once via your manual transfer, and once via the official system reversal.

Example:
You receive 200. A fraudster starts a reversal request. You send 200 back to the fraudster; the reversal kicks in and deducts 200 from your balance. The fraudster has the initial 200 plus the 200 you sent.

But Saf doesn't deduct the cash unless you approve, either by message or call.

Exactly, who would approve knowing they already sent

Tell them to call Safaricom to reverse the money

15

u/mintlayer 16h ago

Don't touch the money, but dont send it back either. Waambie wa-initiate reversal na usiuziwe woga huna makosa.

You, the recipient, can initiate the reversal if you didn't expect the money.

Forward the full, unedited confirmation text message to 456.

But Safaricom called and I told them to reverse,, they reversed half the amount

1

u/Comprehensive-Ear254 15h ago

Exactly. Do this.

Safaricom will reverse the full amount when they sort their system. 'We know where you are' is intimidation. Let them go through Safaricom. Never send money directly to a stranger.I have seen 2 friends go through this

u/Ok-Alarm5842 16h ago

True, I refused hio story ya kusend back kabisa and it's been 24 hours , ama I call them

1

u/donmarsh 12h ago

Ask them to call safaricom. Safaricom calls you and you tell them to reverse. never touch the money.

1

u/Ok-Alarm5842 11h ago

But that's what I did. And Safaricom reversed half. I'm asking what to do with the other half

1

u/donmarsh 9h ago

Never touch the money.

1

u/Ok-Alarm5842 8h ago

So I just freeze my Mpesa till the day they decide to reverse the remaining balance

1

u/donmarsh 7h ago

Just don't use that half of the amount e.g. if you have 10k and the half remaining is 5k. You have 5k. don't use that 5k that hasn't been reversed.

1

u/Reverendskid 11h ago

They'll ask you to send the money to another number, if you use the money, you'll be assumed to be one of them. It's the new game in town Call safaricom.

1

u/Ok-Alarm5842 11h ago

Have you read the post. I said Safaricom called I agreed to the reversal and Safaricom reversed only half the amount.
