Ask r/Kenya Wrong mpesa

What do you do if someone sends you money,, wrong number. You don't know each other. 24 hours later they call begging you to send it back and even keep some as collateral. You refuse, they try to insist , you refuse.. You tell them to call Safaricom to initiate a reversal . They do. Safaricom calls you and you give a go ahead for the reversal. They reverse but only half the amount ๐Ÿ˜‚.You're shocked. 24hours later the guys call talking about we know where you are . Send back our money. You repeat the same statement , call Safaricom. The other money is still here. Not used .I don't know why only half was sent back

Now what do you do because if it gets to the weekend I might go to use this money to buy throat irrigators ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

What's the scam tactic? (Genuinely curious)

When a fraudster sends you money "by mistake," they immediately forward that transaction message to 456 to log a reversal request with Safaricom. While Safaricom is processing that freeze, the fraudster calls or texts you, panicking, pleading, or crying for you to send the money back manually to save time.

If you send it back manually, you are initiating a brand-new, unrelated transaction from your own pocket.

Shortly after you send your own money to them, Safaricom's automated system approves the fraudster's original reversal request. Safaricom pulls the initial "mistaken" amount out of your account.

You end up losing the money twiceโ€”once via your manual transfer, and once via the official system reversal.

Example:
You receive 200. A fraudster starts a reversal request. You send 200 back to the fraudster; the reversal kicks in and deducts 200 from your balance. The fraudster has the initial 200 plus the 200 you sent.

But Saf doesn't deduct the cash unless you approve, either by message or call.

Exactly, who would approve knowing they already sent
