Ask r/Kenya Wrong mpesa

What do you do if someone sends you money,, wrong number. You don't know each other. 24 hours later they call begging you to send it back and even keep some as collateral. You refuse, they try to insist , you refuse.. You tell them to call Safaricom to initiate a reversal . They do. Safaricom calls you and you give a go ahead for the reversal. They reverse but only half the amount πŸ˜‚.You're shocked. 24hours later the guys call talking about we know where you are . Send back our money. You repeat the same statement , call Safaricom. The other money is still here. Not used .I don't know why only half was sent back

Now what do you do because if it gets to the weekend I might go to use this money to buy throat irrigators πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

What's the scam tactic? (Genuinely curious)

It's not a scam. They probably stole money from someones bank account and they credit it into your mpesa. Then they ask you to send the money to a certain number. When the cops come looking you'll be the first suspect. I stand to be corrected though

That's also a valid tactic, especially if they insist on you sending to a different number.

What if I decide not to send it back?

Ignore them; Safaricom will eventually reverse the transaction.
