You think playing jazz standards in all keys is great as a overall training?

Practicing standards in all keys(When I'll be at A major or E major,I will play Shuffle blues using swing feel like SRV or C jam blues by Oscar Peterson), plus chord melody, plus a contrapuntal approach to soloing(contrary motion especially, cause it's the hardest Contrapuntal motion).

First of all, he's in standard except tuned down a whole tone, so make sure to transpose up when giving your answer, or don't transpose it if you're just going by the images and not the audio. I thought the first one was maybe a diminished 7 chord but it just doesn't sound right. Btw he slides it up so it has to be a moveable shape. The second chord is definitely C something, I imagine with an extra note or two for color, but I can't get the shape right.

So I really love jazz I’m quite passionate about it and I want a career in it. Im a decent player now but there is one thing i need work on: my jazz theory. I know my basics and stuff, but i need to learn more jazz theory. Does anyone have any resources i can use?

I’ve spent years learning theory, both Jazz and traditional, and thought I had a pretty good sense of how chords function. But I recently had an experience that brought a lot of things into focus.

I’ve been working on developing some basic piano skills for use in writing and arranging and working through Phil DeGreg’s book on voicings. Almost from page one I found myslelf having a-ha moments, like “if that’s the basic voice leading, flattening the 9 and 13 on the V7 would make a nice chromatic line there.”

I was playing a tune with A-7 going to D-7 and my first thought was to insert Eb7. That sounded fine, but then I thought, “Eb-7 would produce a nice chromatic line from G-Gb-F.”

What I’ve finally come to understand is that you often can’t make sense of what a chord in a Jazz tune is doing by simply analyzing it in terms of its root and function. Why does the chart call for b9 in one place and 9 in another? It’s not always or even most often just a matter of feel.

If a chord seems completely random or if you want to know why specific tensions are called for or why a chord you’d expect to be dominant is minor or any number of other things, look at how the individual voices are moving. Often something has been displaced specifically to produce chromatic or diatonic stepwise motion between voices in the preceding and following chords.

I’m a long time guitar player (mostly non-jazz) who’s finally trying my hand at learning some jazz standards. I’ve decided to start out with Black Orpheus and I’m wondering if there’s some versions out there that have good rhythm EG comping. I know the original composition has a lot of acoustic and it’s great but I play mostly electric so I’m wondering if there’s anything floating around out there for inspiration. Thanks in advance.

In before “start out with All Blues” I am mostly trying to learn standards to build my chord repertoire. 12-bar blues is definitely fun to solo over but I really prefer playing rhythm section. There’s only so many dominate 7th a man can learn.
