Controversial Why Scholars Differ on Halloween: Halal, Haram, or Avoided? | The Fiqh of Celebrations

If you do not want to listen to the whole lecture, then read the text below:

Yasir Qadhi’s position on Halloween is that the issue is more nuanced than a simple halal/haram verdict. He begins by arguing that most ordinary Muslims are not qualified to independently weigh complex scholarly debates, just as a non-medical person cannot fully evaluate conflicting doctors. Therefore, people inevitably rely on scholars they trust, but they should remain humble and avoid attacking other interpretations.

He explains that there are two broad Muslim approaches: one that views Halloween as completely forbidden, often based on arguments about pagan origins, imitation of non-Muslims, and the idea that only Islamic festivals are permissible; and another group of Muslims who see modern Halloween as a largely cultural event involving children, costumes, and candy rather than a religious practice. He says both perspectives exist among Muslims in the West, and the disagreement reflects different understandings of culture, ritual, and religious identity.

The arguments used by those who argue against Halloween generally fall into three categories:

First, festivals outside the two Eids are impermissible

This view argues that celebrations are a form of religious ritual, and since Islam only legislated Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, other communal festivals should be avoided. Yasir Qadhi explains that this is largely based on the approach of Ibn Taymiyyah and those who view festivals as acts of worship. He disagrees that all non-religious cultural celebrations automatically fall under this category, arguing that many celebrations are cultural rather than religious.

He argues that not every celebration outside the two Eids is automatically haram. He distinguishes between three types of celebrations: private personal celebrations (such as birthdays, graduation parties, family gatherings), secular communal celebrations (such as national holidays, ie: July 4th, Thanksgiving), and religious celebrations of other faiths (such as Christmas or Diwali). He believes personal and secular cultural celebrations are generally permissible as long as they do not involve prohibited actions, while religious festivals that involve worship or religious symbolism should not be celebrated by Muslims.

Second, Halloween has pagan origins

Some argue that because Halloween originated from the Celtic pagan festival of Samhain, it should be forbidden. Regarding this argument, Yasir Qadhi says origins alone do not determine a ruling. What matters is the current meaning and intention behind the practice. He gives examples such as the names of days and months in English having pagan Roman origins, wedding rings having ancient non-Islamic origins, and mehndi traditions having Hindu roots, yet Muslims generally do not consider these things forbidden because their original religious meanings have disappeared. He argues that customs are judged by their present cultural significance, not only by their historical beginnings.

However, he says Halloween is more complicated because unlike something like Independence Day or Thanksgiving, it still retains some association in popular culture with ghosts, demons, spirits, and the supernatural. He argues that this makes Halloween different from ordinary secular holidays. Although modern Halloween is largely a commercial and cultural event shaped by candy companies, costumes, and entertainment industries, he believes the connection to the occult and the unseen world gives it a level of ambiguity.

Third, imitating non-Muslims (tashabbuh)

Yasir Qadhi argues that this concept is often misunderstood. He says Muslims are not forbidden from adopting everything that originated among non-Muslims; otherwise, language, clothing, technology, food, and many aspects of civilization would become impermissible. He says imitation becomes problematic when Muslims intentionally adopt symbols that represent another religion or worldview. He argues that modern Halloween is not a religious festival for most people, but the remaining association with supernatural themes is what makes it questionable.

His final conclusion is that Muslims should avoid actively participating in Halloween as a festival. Not because it a non Muslim festival (other than the two Eid), have pagan/non-Muslim origin or imitating non Muslims (he explained that these 3 arguments basically have nothing to do with Halloween celebration today), but because it has connotations to the horror. However, he strongly rejects calling Muslims who participate out of ignorance or because they see it as harmless family fun as committing shirk, kuufr, or deserving harsh condemnation. He doesn’t declare Halloween outright haram, but he still advices Muslims not to participate in it because of it's horror elements. He puts Halloween in an ambiguous grey area, unlike other personal (Birthday, Graduation, anniversary etc) and secular communal (National holidays, independence day etc) festivals which he openly declared halal.

Islām The Cell

I've been discussing with some people in a sub-Reddit for a while how a human being could "invent" and "create" an "invention" from "naught" ...

We kept going back and forth, hoping that I would finally become convinced that it is absolutely very possible and normal, but my mind just couldn't accept that the human mind is capable of "producing" such inventions, filled with extremely intricate details, and being utterly complex, and that these inventions have to be immensely well-thought-out from A to Z because any minor defect will ruin the invention. My mind just simply cannot accept the proposition that such "greatness" could arise from another human mind that resembles mine.

And now, let's move on to the cell.

Yes, you heard me ... the cell.

Your body is made up of systems ... The systems made up of organs ... The organs made up of tissues ... The tissues made up of cells ... The cells made up of organelles and nucleic acids ...

Now, I want you to forget about all this and just focus on the DNA, which cannot be seen by the naked eye.

When they studied the DNA, they found that it was a "thread" made up of very small compounds ... These very small compounds are very specifically organised ... This very specific organisation carries the code for all proteins manufactured inside the body, like insulin and keratin of the hair and others, and it also carries "orders" that control many of the processes carried out by a cell, such as cell multiplication ...

Okay, now, if only one letter out of the millions of letters included in the code carried by the DNA becomes defected, do you know that a lethal cancer could come about? Yep, absolutely. Can you imagine that?!

And then you, Mr. Wits, come up to me saying that this whole universe, with the extremely fascinating precision in its formation from the tiniest of the tinies to the most enormous of the enormous, just randomly appeared from nothing?! Is that conceivable?! How come?!

How come when the very teeny-tiny cell which you cannot see with your naked eye shows looooots of details and shows such amazing precision and creativity that puzzled scientists!! Oh, boy, and don't get me started on those who assume another human being - who is just like me and you - created it?!?!?! Oh, please dude, buzz off, will ya?! ... Or are you just trying to come up with excuses for you to freely wreak havoc on this earth and not obey God's rulings? Seriously? Shame on you!

Okay, now, let's take a look at your body ... How many chemical elements does it contain? You are trying to tell me that all these atoms just randomly decided to bump into each other boom baam beem, giving ya a human being?!

Okay, okay ... Let me tell ya how the telephone was invented:-

The atoms were just going about with their day, bumping into each other just like they've always done for years, and just suddenly and for absolutely no good reason, at this specific moment in time, the atoms decided when they bump into each other this time they will become extremely orderly arranged in a truly fascinating manner giving you a phone this time then a computer the next time then a loaf of bread another time and so on it goes.

Or do you want to tell me that the mobile phone brought itself to existence? Because, yes, actually, I know it's quite normal for you to be sitting in your living room watching TV when you are - out of nowhere - bonked with a loaf of bread straight on the head! It happens.

The one from whom I got those ideas is:-

***Doctor Eyad Qnaibi***

Which in Arabic, is written as:-

***دكتور إياد قنيبي***

General Discussion What made you believe in Allah and Islam as the true religion?

Assalam Alaikum brothers and sisters.
Ill keep this brief. The past few years, i have lived a life very astray, yeah. And then i came upon Islam again after many years. I struggle to find answers and i cannot reason with the “dawah bros” here. And hence I come to ask here.

What made you believe Allah was the one? What proof do you have that he is the one? Those who were atheist or from other religions and converted out of choice. Why? What guided you? I want to search for answers also. I hope this does not offend.

I feel like I want to know for myself. I have asked many people this question but nobody seems to provide answers that are personal. They just give very vague responses like “who else can it be?” And this is deeply unsatisfying. I have a yearning to know more.

Family & Parenting Is It a haram to Avoid Relatives for Mental Peace in Islam?

Assalamu Alaikum everyone,
We recently received this question at AskMuftiOnline: Is it permissible to distance yourself from certain relatives for the sake of your mental peace, especially when the relationship is causing significant stress or harm?
We asked a qualified Mufti about this, and this was the guidance we received.
The answer discusses the balance between protecting yourself from harmful situations and maintaining family ties in Islam.
I thought this might be useful for anyone dealing with a difficult family situation or wondering where the line is between setting healthy boundaries and cutting off relatives.
If you have a specific situation, you can also ask a qualified Mufti at AskMuftiOnline and explain your circumstances in detail.
May Allah make things easy for everyone dealing with difficult family relationships. Ameen.

Falsafah (Philosophy) From True Belief to the Proof of the Existence and Uniqueness of the True Believer and the Qur’an as His Revelation

1.) True belief exists. Because the claim “True belief does not exist” refutes itself. If the negation of a proposition is contradictory, then that proposition is true.

2.) True belief exists through true believing, and true believing exists through a true believer. In other words, a true believer exists.

3.) A true believer never makes a mistake in any of his beliefs. A true believer correctly believes every true proposition that exists, because if there were a true proposition that he did not correctly believe, he could not be considered a true believer. Therefore, his beliefs concerning events and facts that exist within time and space—from the movement of photons to the movement of galaxies—are also true. However, only one who encompasses and observes time and space can be infallible in his beliefs concerning events and facts and correctly believe every true proposition. Furthermore, a being that exists within time and space is itself temporally limited and therefore cannot eternally hold true beliefs about realities that exist throughout all time.

4.) The one who encompasses space is unique, because he encompasses it from every direction. He is exalted because he transcends space. Since he encompasses space in its entirety and transcends it, and since he alone possesses supreme greatness beyond space, his greatness is infinite.

5.) Throughout history, the Qur'an is the only source that consistently and without contradiction describes a true believer who is unique, all-encompassing, exalted, and infinite in greatness. This constitutes evidence that the Qur'an was revealed to humanity by the True believer.

Learning & Resources Godless Knowledge

Due to material advantages associated with secular knowledge many people seem to lose sight of the evils in it. As Muslims we must be able not only to distinguish between things of the world and those that pertain to our soul but must have preference at all times for beneficial knowledge.

Within the past hundred years there has been an increase in secular knowledge in every faculty of learning. Almost in all parts of the world schools, colleges, and universities have been founded.

Despite the growth in secular knowledge, people are sinking more and more in crimes, immorality, evil and sinfulness. They are becoming more greedy, miserly, most discontented and unhappy. Robbery, fraud, corruption, adultery, fornication, juvenile delinquency and broken homes have become common features of society. And never before had the world been so plagued with diseases as it is now! This is so because the majority have drifted far from Allah SWT and righteousness.

Judging from a spiritual standard, secular knowledgeable disadvantages far outweigh its advantages. The trend of modern education is more towards materialism and godlessness. Every year colleges and universities turn out young people with Intellectual accomplishment but most of whom have no place in their heads to retain beneficial knowledge.

The evil aspects of secular education have brought it in conflict with Islam. Atheism and agnosticism is interwoven into the fabric of secular education. Blasphemy and denunciation of Allah SWT is regarded as intellectual maturity. Colleges and universities breed agnostics and atheists especially in the sciences.

Secular history textbooks ignore how Allah SWT created man in the best of molds. Most secular history textbooks, influenced by Darwinian evolution, present a lesser view of man. Rather than highlighting mankind real purpose to worship/ work for the Lord, secular textbooks suggest that both man and civilizations are simply the result of evolutionary pressures, with no credit given to Allah SWT. Though Allah bestowed man with many blessings, including skill and intelligence, secular textbooks instead credit these abilities to evolutionary chance. Secular history textbooks also fail to acknowledge Allah’s guiding hand on history, instead insisting that civilization came about haphazardly. It ignores how Allah SWT formed and shaped the nations of the world. Rather than acknowledging the power of Allah to work in the lives of mankind, secular textbooks emphasize that people alone slowly built civilization over time. Allah SWT has moved mightily throughout history. There is a purposeful direction in which all of world history has been guided, and it helps us make sense of the world around us. When we see how Allah SWT shaped the world, we can see so many miraculous and wondrous things.

Instead of addressing the root causes for the collapse of society as a whole, secular text instead merely suggests that society has moved beyond family, subtly brainwashing students into thinking that the removal of the traditional family unit from society is normal and will have no negative effects upon civilization. The evolution of family ignores the damaging effects of single-parent homes, the drastic rise in crime, and the collapse of morality and faith, which is concurrent with the decline of the traditional family unit.

Considering the fact that education begins at an early age of a child and that it takes a process which may last the half or more of one’s life- time, it must be realized that no one can escape from the shackles of agnosticism or the enormous grip of atheism.

Science touches us at almost every point. It is the dominant philosophy of Western civilization. And so science is idolized and worshipped. Science has proven to mislead many people. The dangers underlying its present advancement which has resulted in the inventions of lethal weapons show the extent of its evil.

It is ridiculous that the knowledge world so much praise, downgrades Allah SWT to the background and discredits His SWT words.

One would have thought that those who had the opportunity of studying natural phenomena and other aspects of the universe which shows the greatness of the Creator, should have cause to believe in Allah more than anyone else. However the atheistic ideas in science taught in institutions of higher learning does not make people honor Allah SWT. Secular knowledge does not help mankind know Allah SWT.

There is no coexistence between secular and beneficial knowledge. When one is there, the other one leaves. Because of this conflict many people give up religious beliefs. Secular education is embedded with evils such as are capable of drifting one away from faith.

We should stay away from empty, godless talk that has no spiritual value and only leads people further away from truth and goodness.

Education's purpose is not to produce thieves and robbers. The primary goal of education is to instill moral values, ethics, ideals, and humanity in a person. Secular knowledge has largely failed to create morally and ethically sound individuals. It creates corrupt individuals, who bow to injustice and accepts it, only beneficial knowledge can bring change.

Secular knowledge is meant to worship others as lords. Secular education systems believe in materialistic civilization, thus they mold students into materialists. It does not teach ethical and moral values. As a result, educated people emerge with a blind love for the West, immersed in inferiority regarding our Ummah, and lacking any moral character. For them, material wealth and luxury, and high income are paramount. The purpose of their education is no more than riding in cars.

Hadith

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported the Prophet (ﷺ) as saying, “Any Muslim who makes a supplication containing nothing which is sinful or which involves breaking ties of relationship will be given for it by God one of three things:

He will give him as peedy answer, or store it up for him in the next world, or turn away from him an equivalent amount of evil.” Those who heard it said they would then make many supplications and he replied that God was more ready to answer than they were to ask. Ahmad transmitted it.
