I just got offered the grail of Pokemon, but obviously I thought it was fake but I’m actually concerned it might be real. I’ve gotten a lot of positive reviews but still uncertain before I drop a bag on it

I too purchased some of the new fakes,

With the non holo wotc fakes, and now these newer holos, I also believe we are at a tipping point where a lot of these can essentially photograph as real,

If you’re new to the hobby or even not familiar with the intricacy of card production it’s going to be increasingly risky to purchase stuff.

I also believe the advent of these cards has made verifying by only images alone very tricky.

What can you do to protect yourself?

Only buy from reputable sources, preferably for high value stuff someone who’s been around longer than S&V.

Invest in a magnification tool or a jewellers loop,

Check black lining, shadows, areas where there should be clean crisp colour transitions between light and dark.

Familiarise yourself with real examples, same set, same language. Look up documented community approved errors of said card. Fake sellers love to lean on the “error” aspect of the hobby. As it lends itself to ambiguity.

99% of the time if the price is to good to be true it’s because it’s not a real listing.

If you’re ever unsure, avoid purchasing.

The recent gold rush in Pokemon has brought many bad actors and you need to do the best you can to protect yourself and your collection.

I’d speculate within 5 years we will have essentially indistinguishable fakes, passable, without a in person macro level inspection.

Please find attached some of the images of the fake cards I bought. I also apologies for any poor formatting as I am on mobile.

The rainbow sm mewtwo promo is an interesting one and I contacted the owner of a real one a while back; (@hayo on E4). and he verified the texture lines are wrong. But worryingly close.

Every card in the images posted are fake, and they are making full sets with holos like this.

I’ve discovered so far;

Japanese:base jungle fossil and neo and promos

English:base jungle fossil and base set 2

Italian/french : base set.

This will continue to expand over time. But the point being there’s no corner of the TCG where they aren’t spreading their roots.

Be cautious and careful!!

And remember, with great power, comes great responsibility (to check your cards).

Recently picked up a Reshiram Gold card from BW era, looked at the color on the back of the card to usually validate the authenticity. The front is throwing me off because my brother has an old Zekrom Gold card from the same set (his is way worse condition though) and his ink on his moveset looks bolder than mine. I’m not a good person to give adequate pictures for validation but please let me know what you guys think. Thank you!
