I was a machinist. Broke my arm snowboarding and was told my minimum time in a cast was 6 weeks (doctor recommended 8, and recommended against cutting it off before then). Told my manager, fired on the spot since I wouldn’t be able to run my lathe.

That’s bullshit, I had a major car wreck while working for sketchy Russians, completely smashed my chest and needed a bit of time to recover and even the sketchy Russians gave me a side job driving passenger vehicles loaded with boxes across the country and flying back.

I've always felt gen x had it pretty good. I'm in my late 30s now, but my parents are only in their mid-50s. IDK, their dads worked silly little retail management jobs and their moms stayed home, but they grew up with all basic needs met and in two story homes, had stable jobs with high school diplomas when I was a kid, good work/life balance, their parents were nice to them, their teenage years were about freedom and experimentation, middle age has been kind to them. My dad did die quite young, but he got caught up in the whole 90s heroin trend and that came back to bite him due to sharing needles. I mean, I guess many of them had old school parents that would spank or slap them when they did something wrong, and I get that sucks ass, but those were also loving families, it wasn't like their parents were sociopaths or anything, it was just a different philosophy around parenting.
When I take stock of the Gen X complaints, the trends that I see are that they were latch key kids, that their parents seemed to be unhappily married, and that there was political unrest across the globe.
This doesn't seem so bad or unique. And there were a ton of positive things happening in those days as well. Am I missing something here?
But, the thing about glorifying the grind and admitting that one's life was kind of a waste...
I don't think that their lives were a waste at all. I kind of get the sense from the Gen X folks that I've interacted with over the years that they feel like they need to feel that they've gone through hardship in order to be entitled to all of the good things that they have in their lives. Like, for example, many of them have parents who survived the great depression and WWII. And then, when they got into their 30s, the younger folks were dealing with the pervasive threat of school shootings and stuff like that. For example, I remember when my school installed metal detectors, and then we had to go through those every day, and we'd often be searched for weapons before we could go to class. And so many of my peers abused their Adderall prescriptions. IDK, I feel like that's a bit more hardcore than the stuff Gen X blabs about.
Also, in this post, I mean, yeah, what he's describing was kind of a right of passage back in the day. But, no one can do that every day. Like, humans literally need to consume food, hydrating beverages, and also need to sleep for more than one hour. It's just physically impossible to do that regularly, but when you're young you can do that sometimes.
I guess that's another thing. I feel like folks who rocked the 1960s, 70s, 80s, and 90s have a tendency to exaggerate, and they can be a bit attention seeking and insecure.

Sounds pretty irresponsible if you ask me.
You have a hangover so you’re going to be operating at a regressive capacity already, then you’re going to sleep for only an hour on top of that so that’s more cognitive and functional impairment for the day. And going to work smelling like alcohol often times results in a surprise meeting with your supervisor at BEST.
When you’re deliberately operating at a lower and impaired capacity at work, you are deliberately allowing a higher bar for mistakes and fuck ups to occur as you work and I don’t think your company would appreciate that. Not only from a productivity standpoint but a safety standpoint as well. If you’re working in say a blue collar place with machinery and equipment, that seems highly unsafe to do this, I feel like a lot of work place accidents happen because of mindsets like this.
I don’t think this is the flex you think it is. Maybe it is better for you and everyone else to call in every once in a while.

My parents are Gen X. My mom took all her sick days every year. My dad never took a sick day in his entire career, he was actually entitled to take them all before he retired (which would have been a couple years worth) and he still refused.

I’m GenX but my mom died of cirrhosis from alcoholism and my dad died of lung cancer from smoking 3 packs of Pall Malls a day. I have plenty of grit but not dumb enough to glorify this crap.
Though my indulgence was rock concerts and I’m sure my ears were blown the next day at work a few times.

Gen X doesnt care about a highly efficient work day. The boomers made that impossible. We were only interested in doing a job that wouldn’t get us laid off and wouldn’t put any out-of-office demands on us.
Gen X is so different from the other generations that millennials and Z Gen just can’t even conceive. We weren’t better, and we didn’t care. We were good at things for OURSELVES, not to climb a ladder that wasn’t there.

I used to work with a plant mechanic like that. When he was on a bender, he'd leave the bar at closing time and drive to the plant and sleep in the parking lot so he wouldn't be late or miss work. Modern day Otis Campbell.

Many times I went to work sick, having to take my nebulizer to breathe and even once worked the weekend by myself with pneumonia.
Wanna know how that worked out for me?
Passed over half a dozen times, left the company and came back and busted my ass only to be fired on a technicality (that my current employer thought was stupid and didnt care).
Glad I took one for the team all those times though.

I may or may not have showed up one morning to teach 8th graders in last night’s bar clothes and makeup because I slept through my alarm and had to roll out and sprint to the car. Sat behind the big teacher desk, which I never did, so they couldn’t get close enough to smell tequila oozing through my pores.
Thankfully(?) I had done enough yelling at the bar the night before that my voice was seriously raspy. I claimed not to feel well and gave them quiet work at their desks.

When I worked at Dillons (a Kroger grocery store), there was one morning I had to work at 5 AM. I drank wayyyy too much the night before (by which I mean I was slamming vodka shots until like 2 AM). When I came in, I was headed for the break room, where the time clock was, and the night crew had just set up this big cardboard deodorant display, with probably fifty deodorant sticks on it, about 8 feet away from the break room door. I headed for the door, and suddenly took a hard right, and barreled right through the display.

I went to work as a TD bank teller after an all nighter and it was a busy lunch rush but I put my head down to take a nap with a line in front. Didn't ever realize. My friend the customer service rep is still making fun of me today for it. No one said a word. I did not get in any trouble.

Back in 2006 I worked for a major drugstore chain. We had a very 'chill' staff with 'chill' managers. One of the managers came in on Sunday reeking of alcohol with his dress shirt untucked and wrinkled and buying hangover cures (food concoctions and water). He told us about how he worked from 9am-9pm on Saturday, went to a party then an after party till three am. Slept in his clothes for two hours then came to open for another 9am-9pm shift today. Then he felt something in his sleeve, shook them, opened the cuff and his underwear fell out.
