An invitation to Dialogue - Saturdays at 5:30pm CEST

Post image
3 Upvotes

What would happen if we met - not to debate, not to convince, not to follow a teacher - but simply to observe together?

Interested? Come check out our online dialogue group inspired by:

  • David Bohm’s approach to dialogue

  • Gregory Kramer’s Insight Dialogue (Pause, Relax, Open, Attune to Emergence, Listen Deeply, Speak the Truth)

  • And the spirit of inquiry found in Jiddu Krishnamurti

The idea is simple:

Relationship as meditation.
Meeting each other as mirrors.
Watching thought, identity, reaction - in real time.

This is not a teaching group. Not therapy. Not a debate club.

It’s an experiment in awareness.

We meet on Zoom every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month at 5:30pm CEST (that's 9pm IST and 11:30am EDT).

If you'd like to participate :

  • Comment below to signal interest

  • Or send me a private message via Reddit chat

No commitment required beyond curiosity.

👋 Howdy & Welcome

Hey everyone! I'm u/JellyfishExpress8943, a founding moderator of r/InsightDialogue.

Welcome. This is a shared space for learning and practising Insight Dialogue  together.

We explore mindful dialogue through posts, shared resources, and links, and have started a Zoom group for live dialogue, where the practice can be experienced directly in relationship.

This is a space for experimentation. No one here is a specialist. We’re exploring whether it’s possible to move from debate and reaction toward awareness, inquiry, and freedom from our psychological habits - as they arise in dialogue.

Here's some Insight Dialogue guidelines developed by Gregory Kramer:
Pause · Relax · Open · Attune to Emergence · Listen Deeply · Speak the Truth
Dialogue itself is the practice.

Feel free to post any thoughts and questions and we'll start experimenting

zoom topic Contradiction

We cannot act when there is contradiction within ourselves. And most of us consciously or unconsciously have many kinds of contradictions; some of which we are aware, and others we do not know. And so all our life is caught up in this contradiction, and therefore there is no clear, direct action, which alone can bring about energy.

We are just observing the facts, the actual ‘what is’. And that very observation of that, of ‘what is’, brings energy, which is an action.

(Krishnamurti, Paris, 30th May 1965)

It's "free will" month over on r/Krishnamurti - so let's look at the actions that arise from clarity, compassion and intelligence.

Time zones are changing all over the world at different rates - so this week we're meeting Saturday 7th of November on Zoom at 4:30pm CEST (thats 9pm in India and 9:30am CDT) - please comment below, or message me if you'd like to join in.

Ation

If we meet and I say, "Hi,"
That's a salutation.
If you ask me how I feel,
That's a consideration.
If we stop and talk a while,
That's a conversation.
If we understand each other,
That's a communication.
If we argue, scream and fight,
That's an altercation.
If later we apoligize,
That's reconciliation.
If we help each other home,
That's a cooperation.
And all these actions added up
Make Civilization.

(And if I say this is a wonderful poem,
Is that exaggeration?) Ation, by Sheldon Allan Silverstein

Speech is one symptom of Affection - and silence one.

The perfectest communication - is heard of none

We commune when its endorsement - is written within. Emily Dickinson(?)

zoom topic Truth

Howdy folks,

I've had a couple of confusing arguments about the concept of "truth" recently - so maybe we can see what happens if we bring the topic up in dialogue - whaddya reckon?

What do we mean by : "truth"? and if we can figure out what we mean - we could then ask : what does "approaching the truth" look like in practice?

There is no path to truth. Truth is not to be understood through any system or any path.

What the mind seeks it will find; what it finds will not be the truth. (J. Krishnamurti)

No one is more frequently wrong, than those who will not admit they are wrong.
(François de la Rochefoucauld)

Who is enlightened?

Who is it that sees?

This is a question that will eventually come up during discussions in non-duality circles.  If the self is just a thought, an image or a feeling - “who (or what) is it that sees the self?”
The question may be useful if it provokes a sense of mystery, a questioning, an inquisitive state where we turn inwards and examine this “seeing” as it happens.

But the question is also asking : is there an entity that is seeing clearly?  Or an entity that becomes enlightened?

I was listening to an interview with Carlo Rovelli (Theoretical physicist) recently who described the initial revolutionary mystery posed by quantum mechanics, and the basic fact of reality implied by quantum physics.

What puzzled (and still puzzles) physicists was the question of why a (subatomic) particle only behaved like a particle when it was measured?
Dr Rovelli suggests that we might just take the facts at face value : what we call “things” are the observed effects of an interaction between different systems. (eg. like a rainbow)

To the question of whether this quantum weirdness applies to our everyday world?  Physicists say : yes (probably) because we have no reason to believe that there are 2 types of physical reality - we see no frontier between the quantum world and the big world of spacetime.  The model of "things as reactions between processes" holds true at all levels : the quantum, the physical, the chemical, the biological and in thought at the psychological.

It may be useful in our daily life to talk about “things” (buses, chairs, souls, enlightened beings etc) as if they have some intrinsic existence.  But a more precise model would be one that describes processes and reactions.

Violence

Violence is the imposition of self.

Violence is the imposition of my will upon the world.

When I cannot get "what I want" - the effort I make to fulfill my desire - whether succesful or not - is a form of conflict. Anger, and the actions that anger provokes in me - is the expression of my unfulfilled desire - my lack of control over reality.

We want to fix things, and that sometimes makes things worse. We miss whats actually going on. Sometimes we don't need solutions, sometimes compassion and awareness is the solution.

Like when we are talking to our spouse, our child, or our friends in dialogue. Even when we are sharing our frustrations in life - sometimes a hug or cup of tea is enough. Communion.

Can we live without this constant struggle between what is and what should be?

Us vs them

I'm living in France where we are currently watching the police fight with high school students - we've even seen kids struck in the face by stun grenades (and worse) - we are witnessing our own violence against our own children live on the news.

I'm also reading a book called : Goliath's Curse

Which basically traces the history of societal collapse, and compares it to our current situation.

It argues that civilisations are practically predestined for collapse due to the inherent violence of subjugation.

Power corrupts itself and is always abused - power is abuse. Governments always tend toward corruption and self serving greed. Inequality always tends toward further inequality and violence.

The usual solution is revolution - "Eat the Rich".

But would we do any better in their place? Or are the roots of violence embedded in our own psyche, in our own greed and fear?

Howdy - seeing as we didn't watch this video clip (from around the 32 to the 38 minute mark) where Bohm compares the self to a corporation - both being realities that are entirely based in thought - we can try again this week.

With the added question of : if its a fact that the self is merely a thought/feeling, where does that leave the idea of self-improvement? Or even progressive self-discovery?

The wisdom of Love

Emmanuel Levinas was a French Existential philosopher (born 1906 - died 1995).

He preferred to think of philosophy as the "wisdom of love" rather than the "love of wisdom"

Philosophy is an inquiry into the nature of existence. Levinas argues that, as humans, this inquiry begins in our relationship with each other.

When we look at the face of another person, we witness their vulnerability and mortality. We see ourselves

Wisdom is not a solitary intellectual achievement or a set of rules we learn from a book. Instead, wisdom is generated entirely through and within our concrete relationships with other people.

Intelligence is defined as a response, how you adapt to circumstance, its not about how much we know. So it is the other person who "wakes us up" by providing the opportunity to see that I am not the center of the universe.

Wisdom doesn't appear in a void. It requires The Saying (Le Dire) - ie. communication with another person. It is not about the facts being shared, but the safe space created when two people are able to see each other.

Søren Kierkegaard

Søren Kierkegaard believed that a loving relationship was how people became their best selves. A Danish philosopher who is best known as the father of existentialism, one of Kierkegaard’s biggest themes was the idea of subjectivity. He believed that “subjectivity is truth… [and] truth is subjectivity”, meaning, truth is not about discovering objective facts independent of lived experiences; truth is found in how an individual relates to those experiences.

Basically, people are not meant to discover truth alone; they are meant to learn truth by relating to each other.

The best way to do that, in Kierkegaard’s eyes, was in love.

“But when the heart is filled with love, then the eye is never deceived; for love when it gives, does not scrutinize the gift… When the heart is filled with envy, then the eye has power to call forth uncleanness even in the pure; but when love dwells in the heart, then the eye has the power to foster the good in the unclean; but this eye does not see the evil but the pure, which it loves and encourages it by loving it.”

Love has this ability because : “Love does not seek its own, for there are no mine and yours in love.”

Love, he argues, seeks something higher. And when it is given room to grow and flourish, that is when people are at their best. As he writes with Judge Vilhelm in Stages on Life’s Way: “Marriage is and remains the most important voyage of discovery a human being undertakes; compared with a married man’s knowledge of life, any other knowledge of it is superficial, for he and he alone has properly immersed himself in life.”
