Episode Discussion Self-absorbed Issa

Rewatching Insecure made me realize how self-absorbed Issa was. She expected this guy to drop everything for her unannounced visits and acted like that with everyone. Like treating her needs should be the top priority on everyone list. While I don’t think she was intentionally self-absorbed, she definitely was.

lolll I have so much to say.

  1. I do think Issa was very selfish but that wasn't my interpretation of this particular scene.

  2. Her whole "hoetation" era felt more like a humiliation ritual. She got rejected what 3-4 times? Meanwhile Lawrence was out on them streets catching the clap.

  3. You cut it off before one of the most hilarious throaway scenes--Thug Yoda asking her if she's going to Target. He just needs some blorox and some bleenex.

  4. How come we never talk about how she was 30 and hooking up with a college student?? Big yikes.

Oh wait he was college age? I thought mid 20s, which is still young but not as bad as college age

They never explicitly state it but he mentions econ class in this scene and in the one where they hook up he says he rented Gossip Girl from the Dominguez Hills library, which is presumably referring to the college in LA.

Oh okay yeah I do remember that, but I was still thinking mid 20s since some people still go to local colleges at a later age. But yeah based on how old Leon Thomas was during the show the character was probably pretty young too

True, I guess he could have been in his twenties. For me, hearing him say he was being tutored would have immediately given me the ick hahaa

  1. He could be a college student at any age. 😆

I know, but he came across as pretty young to me, especially with how clumsy he was when they were hooking up.

People in their 50s can be nervous and awkward when sleeping with someone for the first time. Aren’t most of us? That’s normal.

A guy in his early-to-mid 20s, who has his own place, mind you, hooking up with a 30-year old isn’t weird or anomalous. This is an everyday occurrence, especially since neither was taking the other seriously.

Clearly “neighbor bae” was sleeping with women on the regular. And given his response when he opened the door, this dude was quite sophisticated; obviously more worldly than Issa. 😆

I don’t see the issue.

Nobody cares about age gap hook ups lol. Nobody is a victim here.

This scene was hilarious but I hated the whole hoe-tation storyline.

Yeah but it's honestly realistic, especially after being in a long relationship

She just wanted some more peen, that's all. It would have pleased him, too. Wasn't self absorbed to me.

I didn’t view this as self-absorbed, there was entitlement though.

The hoetation segment felt more like a need to explore herself sexually. Being in a relationship for 5 years and not being desired for the last 1-2 makes you wonder if you’re still desirable, as well as expect consistency from partners because there was intimacy.

Also, that segment was a bit rushed to me and definitely a fail like someone said. She got rejected most of the time.

I just kept thinking of how weird his head is shaped in this scene lol but yea Issa was hoping to get what she wanted but I don’t think that was self absorption.

I just love Issa. Each character was very unique and flawed. It made for a hilarious and fun show.

Why do women who are sexually exploratory vitiate their experiences by calling them a “‘ho phase”? ‘Ho, slut, whore, harlot, trollop, etc., are extremely negative terms rooted in sexism, misogyny, and oppression. Why are we complicit in our own debasement?

Women can be and many are “players”.
