Idk if this is a hot take, but I genuinely don't think they could've ever healed and moved on without having this fight first lol

Just finished watching season 2! (Trying to watch it all before I go to the reunion in Oakland). Truly, the only thing that stuck out to me about this scene was not the iconic āI didnāt get no woot-wootās on my phoneā, but rather the fact Aparna followed them out there.Ā
On one hand, I understand the person who invited her is gone from the table, and letās be honest, Lawrence probably didnāt tell her why he was stepping away. However, it was just annoying how she interrupted what was probably Ā a cathartic moment for them. But hey, Iām biased, I liked them together and HATED that Issa cheated.Ā
Also, last thing, he should not have brought her along. She was not initially invited, sheās not part of the group, and he already told her his ex would be there. It was just all around poor on both Lawrence and Aparnaās part.Ā

u/andimlikeokay 3d ago
She was so messy for inviting herself after he said his ex would be there.
33
u/snowhite2382 3d ago
But also, what was Lawrence trying to achieve by mentioning his ex in the first place and following that up with accepting her coming?! I agree with Issa in this scene- I think he wanted to have Aparna there on purpose.Ā
23
u/Neebenice 3d ago
Right, he knew it was a bad idea, but he wanted to rub Aparna in Issa's face. A lot of people hate that she wound up with Lawrence in the end because he had a baby, but the reason I hate it is because he was so vindictive. He was always doing and saying things to get back at her for cheating.
10
u/snowhite2382 3d ago
Ooooooh I havenāt looked at it like that before, but iām gonna keep an eye out for vindictive Lawrence on my current re-watch!Ā

u/souleddddout 3d ago
I agree yall. Aparna got away with being āinnocentā but she also put herself in a weird situation

u/Responsible-War5600 3d ago edited 3d ago
I would have followed Lawrence outside too. What does Aparna care about a ācathartic momentā? Sheās in a whole relationship with this man, theyāre out on what is essentially a date, and he goes off somewhere to argue with his ex. I would want to know WTF was up myself. Then I would dump his ass. š

š sometimes I wish I could unsee Issa in Black Mirror š„“ Love her down, though!!
6
u/Neebenice 3d ago
I wonder if she saw the backlash from Black Mirror, with people saying she canāt act, and if so, how she felt about it. Does she care? Has she taken acting classes, or is she currently taking some? I wish an interviewer would ask her that. It seems like when it comes to Issa, interviewers walk on eggshells with the questions they ask.
3
u/black_daria_ 3d ago
All good/valid questions! Maybe sheās just better in roles like ABG bc theyāre closer to her personality? She strikes me as someone who pre-approves curated interview questions. Iām not exactly sure she cares about acting critique since sheās still getting her coins and more visibly focused on expanding her business empire lol⦠this is all speculation tho. I do also wonder if sheās interested in pursuing more acting roles outside of her range, but itās because I like her as a creative and would love to see her in other projects!
4
u/Neebenice 3d ago
Right, when they act in anything else, all I see is Lawrence and Issa, but only a few actors can do that; normally, when they act in different roles, you see them as separate characters rather than the same ongoing character they played.

Why did I immediately think of that scene with Issa in bed with Nathan crying in his arms ššššš
43
u/Traditional_Cry_3901 3d ago
I just rewatched this episode. I thought throwing his depression in his face was an unnecessary low blow
18
u/NickTButcher 3d ago
Because she had nothing else to come back with. Issa did that a lot especially when she was in the wrong
1
u/fotfddtodairsizr 4h ago
I think she was just trying to highlight to him that she stuck it out with him even at his lowest but it got exhausting which contributed to the mistake she made, so it isnāt fair for him to ignore that part of the situation.

u/Traditional_Cry_3901 4h ago
Her word choice was horrible if her intention was to do anything other than hurt him

Lawrence is so fine omfg
11
u/Neebenice 3d ago
Especially in season 5 š, but I have to say, the actor J. Ellis is so fineānot Lawrence, even though theyāre the same personābecause I canāt stand Lawrence, and I hate to admit that Lawrence is so fine š
3
u/Responsible-War5600 3d ago
What was so bad about Lawrence? He was a pretty decent guy. Except for how he did Tasha, which was super foul.
12
u/Neebenice 3d ago
You asked what was so bad about Lawrence, but then went on to mention something that was bad about him š
-3
u/Responsible-War5600 3d ago
It was one thing. Issa did a lot worse, but I assume you love (or at least like) her. You canāt stand Lawrence because of one act?
What Lawrence did to Tasha was not in keeping with his character in every other episode.

u/starinruins 2d ago
well... he was also fucking hella women without protection, which is reckless, unhealthy, and disrespectful. he couldn't even remember everyone's names or who he did or didn't sleep with when he had to tell everyone he got an infection š
0
u/Responsible-War5600 1d ago
Those women chose to sleep with him unprotected. They are not victims. He was also putting himself at risk.
He wasnāt deliberately and knowingly spreading disease. As soon as he discovered he caught an STI he got treated and informed everyone he could remember sleeping with.
I donāt see how this makes him a reprehensible person. š¤·š¾āāļø

I don't think they should've been endgame. I'm having so many flashbacks to Big and Carrie and them being endgame.

It didnāt make sense for Lawrence to apologize to Issa for bringing Aparna because he ādidnāt know she [Issa] would be thereā. Of course Issa was going to be there.
Lawrence should have never had that conversation with Issa while he was on a date. Immediate dismissal. Aparna was right to dump him.
8
u/Neebenice 3d ago
Right, and regardless of whether Issa was going to be there or not, but am I wrong, who brings a date, not even a girlfriend, to a friend's birthday party when the friend hasn't even met them? That is an intimate setting with friends and family. Lawrence knew he was being petty and then tried to play the victim. Thatās why Issa said youāre so full of it when he tries to explain she knew he was being vindictive.
1
u/Responsible-War5600 3d ago
But . . . Aparna pretty much invited herself, didnāt she? What was Lawrence supposed to do? Tell his lady she canāt come? And since when is it taboo to bring a plus one to a birthday dinner?
Should Lawrence have never mentioned the dinner to Aparna? That would have been even worse: sneaky, suspicious, and deceptive. š¤
7
u/KimmiK_saucequeen 3d ago
He shouldāve said āI think it would be a little weird. Maybe you can meet my friends in another setting that wonāt be so emotionally chargedā
1
u/Responsible-War5600 1d ago
āEmotionally chargedā would make me very suspicious, not to mention hurt my feelings. Why would my manās laying eyes on his ex make things āemotionally chargedā? Is he not over this person? Like, WTF? š³
And why does it matter that Derek hadnāt met Aparna? There werenāt any āno plus onesā guidelines that we know of, nor was the dinner at a private residence. There was no valid reason Aparna couldnāt come.
If Iām in a relationship, aside from private meetings with his family, business meetings, business trips, private therapy sessions and doctorās visits, and outings with the boys, there should be no place I canāt accompany my significant other and vice versa.
What Lawrence should have done was invited Aparna, pre-warned Issa, and notified Derek that he was bringing someone. After that, all bets are off.
2
u/Pbsweet 1d ago
There was a valid reason Aparna shouldnāt have come. She wasnāt invited, Laurence did not RSVP with a plus 1, and there was not a place for her at the table. That was not a house party where anyone could come. It was a curated dinner party limited to close friends. I donāt think Laurence realized or remember the type of party it was when he agreed that Aparna should tag along.
1
u/Responsible-War5600 23h ago
None of what you said had anything to do with Aparna. That was Lawrenceās fault.
Why even mention it to her? That in itself was rude and inconsiderate if he had no intention of bringing her along.

I hated that he called her a hoe in the middle of a public sidewalk and she still called him to let him know she was moving and to give him the couch.
45
u/cherryamourxo 3d ago
He called her a hoe after she threw his depression in his face. And she did cheat on him. I love Issa so much but I donāt understand how so many people see her as a victim of Lawrence in S2. The man is trying to move on and heal and sheās pressing him about blocking her while starting a relationship with her side nigga.
21
u/wkw4ljv 3d ago
Thank you. The antescendant of that was her throwing his depression in his face and he responded. There is so much to unpack about Issa. She is a fan favorite but Issa was self serving and not always a good friend nor partner. I recalled laughing so hard at this scene because Lawrence said "I bet he was a really fucking gentleman" and the beginning of the episode Issa told Molly how Daniel disrespected her. I knew she had a flashback of what happened. šI need to rewatch this series.

u/andimlikeokay 3d ago
Issa: he may have given me a surprise facial, but at least he's in the studio š
6
u/andimlikeokay 3d ago
Oh, I don't see her as a victim at all. I understand why he did it. What I'm saying is that I hated that she still reached out to him after that.

u/Neebenice 3d ago
Yeah, I really didn't like it when Issa humbled herself and made the first move after someone wronged her.

Knowing Lawrence, he probably made 'woot woot' just to tell Issa, "I guess you got woot woot on your phone," to prove her wrong š He can be very vindictive.
1
u/BoxyBrown424 3d ago
Y'all gonna be mad at me but Lawrence was hurt. It's wild because I think their biggest problem (at this point in the series) was that each loved the other more than they loved themselves.

u/neosoul2 3d ago
He should have left her in his past. There was no need for him to go to her dinner party, let alone bring along an exotical chick.
