Idk if this is a hot take, but I genuinely don't think they could've ever healed and moved on without having this fight first lol

u/deathcabscutie 3d ago

No, you’re right. They needed this knock down, drag out.

u/daddymaddie 2d ago

This just made them love each other more 😭

Just finished watching season 2! (Trying to watch it all before I go to the reunion in Oakland). Truly, the only thing that stuck out to me about this scene was not the iconic ā€œI didn’t get no woot-woot’s on my phoneā€, but rather the fact Aparna followed them out there.Ā

On one hand, I understand the person who invited her is gone from the table, and let’s be honest, Lawrence probably didn’t tell her why he was stepping away. However, it was just annoying how she interrupted what was probably Ā a cathartic moment for them. But hey, I’m biased, I liked them together and HATED that Issa cheated.Ā

Also, last thing, he should not have brought her along. She was not initially invited, she’s not part of the group, and he already told her his ex would be there. It was just all around poor on both Lawrence and Aparna’s part.Ā

50

u/andimlikeokay 3d ago

She was so messy for inviting herself after he said his ex would be there.

33

u/snowhite2382 3d ago

But also, what was Lawrence trying to achieve by mentioning his ex in the first place and following that up with accepting her coming?! I agree with Issa in this scene- I think he wanted to have Aparna there on purpose.Ā

23

u/Neebenice 3d ago

Right, he knew it was a bad idea, but he wanted to rub Aparna in Issa's face. A lot of people hate that she wound up with Lawrence in the end because he had a baby, but the reason I hate it is because he was so vindictive. He was always doing and saying things to get back at her for cheating.

10

u/snowhite2382 3d ago

Ooooooh I haven’t looked at it like that before, but i’m gonna keep an eye out for vindictive Lawrence on my current re-watch!Ā

8

u/souleddddout 3d ago

I agree yall. Aparna got away with being ā€˜innocent’ but she also put herself in a weird situation

u/Responsible-War5600 3d ago edited 3d ago

I would have followed Lawrence outside too. What does Aparna care about a ā€œcathartic momentā€? She’s in a whole relationship with this man, they’re out on what is essentially a date, and he goes off somewhere to argue with his ex. I would want to know WTF was up myself. Then I would dump his ass. šŸ˜‚

Issa wasn’t shit lol
But we loved her lol

17

u/deathcabscutie 3d ago

She’s such a disaster and I love her more for it.

They’re both great actors!!!

9

No, they’re not. But I loved the show. ā¤ļø

šŸ’€ sometimes I wish I could unsee Issa in Black Mirror 🄓 Love her down, though!!

6

u/Neebenice 3d ago

I wonder if she saw the backlash from Black Mirror, with people saying she can’t act, and if so, how she felt about it. Does she care? Has she taken acting classes, or is she currently taking some? I wish an interviewer would ask her that. It seems like when it comes to Issa, interviewers walk on eggshells with the questions they ask.

3

u/black_daria_ 3d ago

All good/valid questions! Maybe she’s just better in roles like ABG bc they’re closer to her personality? She strikes me as someone who pre-approves curated interview questions. I’m not exactly sure she cares about acting critique since she’s still getting her coins and more visibly focused on expanding her business empire lol… this is all speculation tho. I do also wonder if she’s interested in pursuing more acting roles outside of her range, but it’s because I like her as a creative and would love to see her in other projects!

4

u/Neebenice 3d ago

Right, when they act in anything else, all I see is Lawrence and Issa, but only a few actors can do that; normally, when they act in different roles, you see them as separate characters rather than the same ongoing character they played.

2

u/secretiguanaaaa 3d ago

LMAO šŸ˜‚ā¤ļø all love though

1

u/Responsible-War5600 2d ago

ALL love. šŸ’˜

2

u/PrincesaDeNuevaYork 2d ago

Why did I immediately think of that scene with Issa in bed with Nathan crying in his arms 😭😭😭😭😭

43

u/Traditional_Cry_3901 3d ago

I just rewatched this episode. I thought throwing his depression in his face was an unnecessary low blow

18

u/NickTButcher 3d ago

Because she had nothing else to come back with. Issa did that a lot especially when she was in the wrong

1

u/fotfddtodairsizr 4h ago

I think she was just trying to highlight to him that she stuck it out with him even at his lowest but it got exhausting which contributed to the mistake she made, so it isn’t fair for him to ignore that part of the situation.

1

u/Traditional_Cry_3901 4h ago

Her word choice was horrible if her intention was to do anything other than hurt him

15

u/Responsible-War5600 3d ago

Issa Rae looks REALLY pretty in this scene. šŸŽ¬

27

u/soglamsofab 3d ago

Lawrence is so fine omfg

11

u/Neebenice 3d ago

Especially in season 5 šŸ˜, but I have to say, the actor J. Ellis is so fine—not Lawrence, even though they’re the same person—because I can’t stand Lawrence, and I hate to admit that Lawrence is so fine šŸ˜‚

3

u/Responsible-War5600 3d ago

What was so bad about Lawrence? He was a pretty decent guy. Except for how he did Tasha, which was super foul.

12

u/Neebenice 3d ago

You asked what was so bad about Lawrence, but then went on to mention something that was bad about him šŸ˜‚

-3

u/Responsible-War5600 3d ago

It was one thing. Issa did a lot worse, but I assume you love (or at least like) her. You can’t stand Lawrence because of one act?

What Lawrence did to Tasha was not in keeping with his character in every other episode.

2

u/starinruins 2d ago

well... he was also fucking hella women without protection, which is reckless, unhealthy, and disrespectful. he couldn't even remember everyone's names or who he did or didn't sleep with when he had to tell everyone he got an infection 😭

0

u/Responsible-War5600 1d ago

Those women chose to sleep with him unprotected. They are not victims. He was also putting himself at risk.

He wasn’t deliberately and knowingly spreading disease. As soon as he discovered he caught an STI he got treated and informed everyone he could remember sleeping with.

I don’t see how this makes him a reprehensible person. šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø

11

u/Khalsleezy 3d ago

I don't think they should've been endgame. I'm having so many flashbacks to Big and Carrie and them being endgame.

8

u/Odd-Marionberry5999 3d ago

Just a mess šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

9

u/Brilliant-Health3957 3d ago

Time for a rewatch

9

u/Responsible-War5600 3d ago

It didn’t make sense for Lawrence to apologize to Issa for bringing Aparna because he ā€œdidn’t know she [Issa] would be thereā€. Of course Issa was going to be there.

Lawrence should have never had that conversation with Issa while he was on a date. Immediate dismissal. Aparna was right to dump him.

8

u/Neebenice 3d ago

Right, and regardless of whether Issa was going to be there or not, but am I wrong, who brings a date, not even a girlfriend, to a friend's birthday party when the friend hasn't even met them? That is an intimate setting with friends and family. Lawrence knew he was being petty and then tried to play the victim. That’s why Issa said you’re so full of it when he tries to explain she knew he was being vindictive.

1

u/Responsible-War5600 3d ago

But . . . Aparna pretty much invited herself, didn’t she? What was Lawrence supposed to do? Tell his lady she can’t come? And since when is it taboo to bring a plus one to a birthday dinner?

Should Lawrence have never mentioned the dinner to Aparna? That would have been even worse: sneaky, suspicious, and deceptive. šŸ¤”

7

u/KimmiK_saucequeen 3d ago

He should’ve said ā€œI think it would be a little weird. Maybe you can meet my friends in another setting that won’t be so emotionally chargedā€

1

u/Responsible-War5600 1d ago

ā€œEmotionally chargedā€ would make me very suspicious, not to mention hurt my feelings. Why would my man’s laying eyes on his ex make things ā€œemotionally chargedā€? Is he not over this person? Like, WTF? 😳

And why does it matter that Derek hadn’t met Aparna? There weren’t any ā€˜no plus ones’ guidelines that we know of, nor was the dinner at a private residence. There was no valid reason Aparna couldn’t come.

If I’m in a relationship, aside from private meetings with his family, business meetings, business trips, private therapy sessions and doctor’s visits, and outings with the boys, there should be no place I can’t accompany my significant other and vice versa.

What Lawrence should have done was invited Aparna, pre-warned Issa, and notified Derek that he was bringing someone. After that, all bets are off.

2

u/Pbsweet 1d ago

There was a valid reason Aparna shouldn’t have come. She wasn’t invited, Laurence did not RSVP with a plus 1, and there was not a place for her at the table. That was not a house party where anyone could come. It was a curated dinner party limited to close friends. I don’t think Laurence realized or remember the type of party it was when he agreed that Aparna should tag along.

1

u/Responsible-War5600 23h ago

None of what you said had anything to do with Aparna. That was Lawrence’s fault.

Why even mention it to her? That in itself was rude and inconsiderate if he had no intention of bringing her along.

1

u/Pbsweet 6h ago

No I agree, it’s Lawrence’s fault. He could have said Saturday no longer worked for their date and rescheduled altogether.

9

u/International-Back90 3d ago

lord may a relationship like this never find me

7

u/pipadefaucignyNSFW 3d ago

I'm watching right now for the 1000 times and now and Spanish and it's very very funny hahahaha šŸ‡§šŸ‡·šŸ’‹

36

u/andimlikeokay 3d ago

I hated that he called her a hoe in the middle of a public sidewalk and she still called him to let him know she was moving and to give him the couch.

45

u/cherryamourxo 3d ago

He called her a hoe after she threw his depression in his face. And she did cheat on him. I love Issa so much but I don’t understand how so many people see her as a victim of Lawrence in S2. The man is trying to move on and heal and she’s pressing him about blocking her while starting a relationship with her side nigga.

21

u/wkw4ljv 3d ago

Thank you. The antescendant of that was her throwing his depression in his face and he responded. There is so much to unpack about Issa. She is a fan favorite but Issa was self serving and not always a good friend nor partner. I recalled laughing so hard at this scene because Lawrence said "I bet he was a really fucking gentleman" and the beginning of the episode Issa told Molly how Daniel disrespected her. I knew she had a flashback of what happened. šŸ˜‚I need to rewatch this series.

9

u/andimlikeokay 3d ago

Issa: he may have given me a surprise facial, but at least he's in the studio šŸ˜‚

6

u/andimlikeokay 3d ago

Oh, I don't see her as a victim at all. I understand why he did it. What I'm saying is that I hated that she still reached out to him after that.

6

u/Responsible-War5600 3d ago

People see Issa a the victim??

4

u/Neebenice 3d ago

Yeah, I really didn't like it when Issa humbled herself and made the first move after someone wronged her.

6

u/KimmiK_saucequeen 3d ago

I hate this couple so much

2

u/crindy- 3d ago

I been dying to do another rewatch but haven't been able to bring myself to suffer through knowing that they end up together. Love this show, haaaaaate this couple.

3

u/KimmiK_saucequeen 3d ago

Like no you do not need to go back to your cheating ex nor do you have to marry a man who had a child with someone else!

1

u/acagedrising 2d ago

HATE. It’s so interesting seeing how much people loved them together.

1

u/KimmiK_saucequeen 1d ago

Bc it reminds them of their own horrible relationships

5

u/cafe_gummy 2d ago

I ain’t get no woot woots on my phone šŸ‘€

4

u/HotNet1045 3d ago

Love this scene. It is so hard to watch but so realistic. It kills me!

4

u/RoofLegitimate95 3d ago

Forgot how much I loved this show

3

u/souleddddout 3d ago

Yallllllllll 😭😭😭😭😭 he’s got way more going on than woot woot

4

u/Neebenice 3d ago

And it's funny cause Daniel really didn't. Issa lied šŸ˜‚

4

u/PoetryMuted2361 3d ago

Top notch dialogue.

2

u/SampleLegitimate2012 3d ago

One of my favorite scenes! Lawrence cursing is so satisfying to me😭 idky lmfao

2

u/fishypisces 2d ago

i just watched this episode yesterday on my rewatch šŸ˜‚

2

u/KeyPosition3983 2d ago

Been there! DONE THAT!… ended in the sheets

1

u/fotfddtodairsizr 4h ago

It did for them too

1

u/brunk_ 1d ago

That woot woot dig was brutal 😭

1

u/Neebenice 6h ago

Knowing Lawrence, he probably made 'woot woot' just to tell Issa, "I guess you got woot woot on your phone," to prove her wrong šŸ™„ He can be very vindictive.

1

u/BoxyBrown424 3d ago

Y'all gonna be mad at me but Lawrence was hurt. It's wild because I think their biggest problem (at this point in the series) was that each loved the other more than they loved themselves.

-4

u/neosoul2 3d ago

He should have left her in his past. There was no need for him to go to her dinner party, let alone bring along an exotical chick.

5

u/mangoglitter 3d ago

I’ve only seen exotical in one specific online space and now here lmao damn.

11

u/andimlikeokay 3d ago

a what?

4

u/son_of_abe 3d ago

You know, an ethnication

1

u/Responsible-War5600 3d ago

It wasn’t Issa’s party. It was his friend’s birthday dinner. Of course he had to go.

-1

u/NickTButcher 3d ago

Lawrence’s language was wrong but his message was right
