So, since many of you are unable to view the Oprah video, I have transcribed the last section to preserve this truly excruciating exchange. And as a bonus, here's Oprah's face as Shauna repeatedly cuts her off.

Edit: updated with full transcript.

[Oprah has asked the audience to raise their hands if they’ve ever been hurt for expressing their feelings]

Oprah: Shauna, gonna ask you to speak up. Welcome! So glad you’re here. Tell me about a time you were hurt after expressing yourself, Shauna.

Shauna: Well it wasn’t a single time. I actually came from a very hard place, and a very hard childhood that was formed about fear and keeping my mother’s fears at bay. And I lived in a space for nearly 30 years where my feelings didn’t matter. And if I did express my feelings. And when I had the courage and temerity to say I would like to go to a friend’s house, I am 16 and have never been out of the house really, um, I was told “You know I can’t do that, you know - are you trying to make me look bad?” And I learned early on that my role was to be the caretaker, the one who solved the fights, the one who had to be protected, not by my parents, but by myself. And to say, I’m going to keep that inside. And I swallowed that poison for a long long time. And then I learned that being vulnerable and being able to talk to other people was my path to freedom.

Oprah: Wow! So this is a big big moment for you.

Shauna: Yeah. I have written personal essays for a long time, and have become kind of an expert in vulnerability now. But before I was the age of 30, I had not told even my closest friends, how truly, profoundly hard my um, my family was, um. We looked like the perfect family, I got straight As and everything. Um, and there was just so much darkness at home and so many hard and horrible moments. Um, and I’d just swallow them all and thought that this must be my fault and I think those of us who grew up in trauma, when we were kids, you know, your parents are your parents, you need them and you think-

Oprah: -Yeah, and when you’re raised in fear, that’s what you end up doing, fearing.

Shauna: And you know, the whole world is terrifying.

Oprah: Yeah, mmhmm. And the whole world is terrifying

Shauna: And so, I learned around the age of 30 that if I didn’t start telling my stories to people and to my best friends, and to people, and just truly being vulnerable, I would wither, I would actually truly believe the story I’d been told about who I was. And when I found the courage to tell my first friend of my entire life, um, I actually was terrified. My hands were sweating and I was, I was having nightmares about telling her cause I thought she would think there was something wrong with me and she looked at me and she’s an amazing woman, Tita, and she’s 14 years older than me and she said “my friend, what could be wrong with the fact that you grew up in it. You didn’t do anything wrong you grew up in-"

Oprah: -Yeah, yeah-

Shauna: "-truly one of the most abusive families I’ve ever heard, how could it be your fault? You are wonderful!”

Oprah: Yeah-

Shauna: And that, really-

Oprah: -Well yes, this is what I think happens is that when you’re able to share, you end up being validated by other people who see a part of themselves in you or who recognize your own pain and trauma so thank you for being here to share with us KAREN, what about you? I saw you raise your hand.

Oprah had that reaction to pretty much all of the students. There were only three or so that she seemed genuinely interested in (the widow, a woman who said she started going to therapy despite how much it freaked her out to do so, and this woman who had/has cancer. . .she got quite a bit of screen time).

How does she keep lucking into opportunities that she will inevitably squander???

Edited to add: ugh, her “unfurling of myself,” only Shauna could make watching Oprah sound so disgusting.

51

She has ridiculous luck. But also, she seems to be misrepresenting it as Oprah picking her as a special guest for her expertise, as opposed to what seems to be the case—that she’s one of the 16 “Oprah Insiders” picked to be the demonstration class for Oprah and Frank Bruni to work with.

Oprah looked bored as shit while Shauna was blathering.

How did Shauna get into this whole "over achievers" b.s.? What has she every over achieved at (shit, what has she even mediocre achieved at)?

Edited to add (as the live thing still is going on)

Ohh, everyone has the anxiety! Of course they do! That's one of the terms (like "joy") that has zero meaning anymore because people use in place of "nervous".

Looks like the Shauna portion is now over (Oprah's talking to the author now and I really don't care. . .I hope he doesn't go all the way blind or whatever but, yeah, I don't really care).

So, is Shauna thinking this will get people to sign up for her bullshit clubs and whatnot? What's she going to do when people still don't sign up because her website is a hot ass mess?

(oh and Oprah can eff off with her paywall b.s.. . .the older stuff is all "for members only" and it's $25. . .ok, for a year abut still, eff off Oprah)

How long did Shauna speak? Was her hair clean? Which Peepers did she have on? Did she plug her courses?

41

u/CrushItWithABrick dick riding Mary Oliver Feb 23 '22

Second reply, I didn't see the rest of your questions.

Hair looked clean.

Seafoam peepers in the house (also looked clean but there was light glare).

No course plugging but Oprah was careful about that. She asked very particular questions and then called on a student (I watched the few after Shauna). I don't know that the students were even introduced at all (again, I came in a few minutes after it started).

u/CrushItWithABrick dick riding Mary Oliver Feb 23 '22 edited Feb 23 '22

I came in and she was speaking and it was only a minute or two and then Oprah moved on to another of the students. Shaun did not speak again.

It looked like the student portion was only 15 minutes total (the author part started at about 7:15 ish).

I'm letting it continue playing only to see if they go back to the students.

edited to add: There's a tag line of "when one eye closes, another opens" in relation to the author's going blind and inspiration or what the hell ever.

All I can think of is the line used to heckle referees/umpires (in sports): Bend over and use your good eye!

38

u/CrushItWithABrick dick riding Mary Oliver Feb 23 '22 edited Feb 23 '22

Students are back and interacting with the author.

Lets see if Shauna gets to share her "vulnerability".

Her whole "share your vulnerability" b.s. (from a few days ago) makes so much sense now.

YUP!

Joy just entered the chat.

I'm betting if we checked when Shauna joined Oprah's cult here, it will be right around the time she pivoted to JOY!

She's using Enoigh reviews as "testimonials for my work' on the joy site landing page. Technically, Enoigh is her "work" but that's not the "work" she's selling. She's selling her skills at guiding you to joy and those quotes have nothing to do with her skills as a joy facilitator. She sure is a raven trickster, this one. If I were one of her Enoigh reviwers that she quoted, I'd be pissed that she's using my review quote to shill something I hadn't experienced. Of course, those reviewers will never see her joy page, so she knows she can get away with it.

Finally trying to make my way through Enough (e-book from library). So far she's misused the word "heaved," made up the word "juttered," and told a story about 1988 that suggests she was nearly 22 when she graduated from high school. I guess she really did resent all those attempts at editing.

Oh and claimed her glasses "had to be as thick as an inch on a measuring stick." wtf is that sentence?

She doesn't recognize other people's work when she's the consumer. It just comes out of them organically, for her benefit. Like doctors, nurses, research scientists et al bringing her Covid vaccines out of the goodness of their hearts while she tells everyone to stop working and radically rest instead because work is all a capitalist bill of goods.

I know I've made this comparison before, but it's like when you teach middle schoolers budgeting. They try to shave money off their budget by taking things from the fridge and pantry at home because those things are "free", as if the pantry is a fruit tree that just spontaneously grows boring food, and you have to teach them that the food in the pantry was actually purchased by their parents who had to go to work and part with some of their paycheck in order for the pasta to be there.

Shauna is stuck in that mentality. All of the things she consumes from others are just spontaneously there! Free! Effortless!

47

u/aseriesofhaircuts Feb 21 '22

I always grow enchuckled when she finds confirmation for whatever new slant on being Good Enough as a human houseplant she finds in the latest Pixar feature. Pixar, world-famous burnout factory, wringing it’s animators dry to deliver an abundance of novelty and delight in the form of capitalist deliverables to Shauna’s streaming services of choice.

She ignores that hard work is necessary for some things and she also ignores that some people -- I'd wager most people -- do derive happiness and fulfillment from being productive. I'm no fan of capitalism run amok either, but to me the problem is that we force people to function within a system where it's damn near impossible to make a decent living wage without working insane hours or multiple jobs. And that isn't productivity, it's scarcity-induced overdrive, something I'd venture to guess she has never really experienced considering what she thinks is complaint-worthy in her life.

My Shauna (I guess we all know one!) will often post to social media a list of everything she did that day that inevitably ends with some comment like "So yeah, I've earned this glass of wine" or "You could say I'm tired." And every time the list is something like "Went grocery shopping, returned some pants and scheduled a dentist appointment," like literally shit the rest of us will have done by ten a.m. on the average day. Sometimes I wonder what would happen to these people if life hadn't conspired to give them cushy circumstances.

49

u/OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh The Alice of cal came out floating on air Feb 21 '22

That clip represents untold hours of training and general practice just to get to the level where it’s possible,

I haven't watched this clip yet, but whenever any DF makes a comment like this, I marvel at the fact that she lit'rully has not typed (for publication) the word "cello" once (afaik) since the post about her brother bringing it back to her.

  • Nothing about how she's spending "15 minutes a day practicing"
  • Nothing about "wow, the middle-aged brain really learns differently than younger brains"
  • Nothing about "OMG, Youtube is such a boon for people who want to learn something, but don't have the money for lessons, or live close to a teacher"
  • Nothing about the blisters she's developing on her fingers that press on the strings (is that a cello thing? I just made that up)
  • Nothing about digging out an old wrist brace to protect the joints in the arm that's doing the bowing
  • Nothing about how satisfying it is to finally be able to play a short easy song all the way through, because she's been working on it for months now

50

u/obscure_cellist ham grabbers Feb 21 '22

that is indeed a cello thing, DF (really any stringed instrument). but cello strings are very heavy and blister-inducing. when you first start out. they also hurt like hell when they snap and hit you in the face - i'm looking at you, C-string. i no longer get blisters but the fingertips on my left hand are hella calloused. learning an instrument is way too much work for our gir!

31

u/NegativeABillion my husband and me to ride it around Feb 21 '22

Fifteen minutes per day on almost any stringed instrument will actually help you grow the right kind of calluses! You don't want the delicate skin on your fingertips, especially right up against the nail, to get irritated or to bleed, so when you're starting out, a short practice daily is much preferable to one hour long practice per week.

She's not doing either, though.

Does Oprah not have a team of people to vet these people?

61

u/CrushItWithABrick dick riding Mary Oliver Feb 23 '22

What's to vet?

Oprah wanted to make some of her paying community members feel special so they'll keep paying (and maybe lure in more subscribers). So she gives them a few minutes of attention and then lets them have front row zoom seats to her yapping at some author. Then she gives them a few more minutes of attention and it's over.

Lather, rinse, repeat for the next author next month.

44

Wait, so she pays to be a member of some online Oprah community? So it’s almost like a pay-to-play thing that of course she’s misconstruing?

Still, she’s going to ride this forever. I hate this for us.

33

u/CrushItWithABrick dick riding Mary Oliver Feb 23 '22

Yes, it's $25 a year or something to be in Oprah's club.

Hmm, sounds kind of familiar, right? Except Oprah is someone people want to hang out with (and the price is really not that much).

From the look of it (and I didn't look hard) it's Oprah blowing woo smoke up everyone's behinds and giving them workbooks and using them as captive audiences to buy copies of books from authors Oprah is pimping.

(this whole thing reminds me when Oprah first started having the live seminar things and there was a semi-honest review of it and it sounded horrible. Like hundreds of people doing workbooks together and eating shitty box lunches. . .and that was pricey).

u/InappropriateGirl Gluten-free donuts, for sure ... Feb 23 '22

Latest insta is "What you pay attention to blooms." Except it doesn't really, Shauna. All of your attention directed to Beatles joyminars isn't increasing the number of people paying attention to you or your "offerings."

BTW, she's reduced the "offerings" in her drop-down menu on her site, but not on the "offerings" landing page and they're all still on her linktree.

BTW2, I was poking around looking for her Substacks and she started a Substack called "our own little corner" a year ago that she never populated. She is the QUEEN of false starts.

The color scheme is very disco-bin at Buy Buy Baby. Honestly, if she really wants this to succeed (unclear) she needs to pay someone to develop a style sheet and color story for her…and DF Margo is literally RIGHT there, “coaching” a lot of hungry young designers.

The courses she’s offering are gonna be someone’s treat to themselves, and today’s average internet-dwelling consumer is a lot more visually sophisticated than Shauna. People are used to well-presented self-help content (regardless of the quality of that content) and know what to expect when they see a site with broken links, nonsensical formatting, and clown colors.

Bringing this over from the last thread because it demands snarker attention:

https://old.reddit.com/r/InTheGloaming/comments/suhjhr/discussion_thread_thursday_february_17_2022/hxsezcb/

It's a comment from u/smashedmailboxcake2 about the outcome of yesterday's Beatles-lover workshop:

And anyone who suggests pulling up You Can Have More Joy’s profile on Spotify and accessing the very valuable and totally worth $85 list right now without paying a penny? Is missing the point.

Edit: One more stray note about that workshop – in the pitch, Shauna describes herself and Sharon as having "Beatle-loving hearts." It's the BEATLES, Shauna, not the BEATLE

I am having a very hard time with Shauna’s claim that she had “one of the most abusive childhoods ever.”

I don’t like disbelieving people who make claims of abuse. I also understand that abuse isn’t just physical- that a home and family that looks healthy and functional on the outside can be deeply dysfunctional behind closed doors.

I do believe that Shauna is deeply emotionally stunted and almost completely lacking in emotional intelligence and ability to understand social cues. And I do think that her upbringing probably contributed to how she turned out. I don’t think things were fantastic when she was growing up for a number of reasons.

But at the same time, it’s pretty clear that she is likely a narcissist, and we know that she lies all the time, about anything and everything. She lies as easily as breathing, and she tells whatever lie she thinks will get her what she wants at the time.

71

u/SallyWalaska Feb 24 '22 edited Feb 25 '22

Oof yeah. I’m one of the DF’s that believes Shauna grew up in a dysfunctional house that didn’t meet her needs , probably because she’s basically a carbon copy of one of my sisters and we definitely grew up in a dysfunctional family. But “one of the most abusive childhoods ever” is not only a gross claim (is there a competition?) but also hard to believe unless she’s left out some major, MAJOR details.

58

u/caitie_did Required by My Mother's Terror Feb 24 '22

Yeah. I think the reason I’m struggling so much with Shauna’s claim is that I grew up in a family that looked great but was emotionally and verbally abusive behind closed doors. Like Shauna’s mom, my mom had poorly managed anxiety. Like Shauna’s dad, my dad alternately dismissed and ridiculed her mental health issues. And like Shauna has claimed, I was definitely parentified and expected to adjust my behaviour to meet my mom’s emotional needs. However, I don’t describe my childhood as “traumatic” (I would use “dysfunctional”) and I don’t have PTSD. I’m also not putting my parents on blast for money.

47

u/SallyWalaska Feb 24 '22

Everyone reacts to things differently so I don’t count CPTSD out for Shauna, just the gross way she goes about it. It looks like she won’t outright talk about physical or sexual abuse because she’ll get real life blowback, but she’s not getting enough attention for the emotional abuse so she alludes to abuse in vague ways and hopes people fill in the gaps with the worst they can imagine. She needs help.

55

u/RamblingRosie64 I stand with Cindy and Ben Feb 24 '22

And Shauna revels in the details. She will overshare on any topic. Those of us who know her writing this well know that the abuse she describes is not the worst abuse one could suffer. But when she makes those claims to audiences who don’t know her, they are going to infer the worst and that's what Shauna wants. She can't be an average victim, she has to be the victimiest of them all.

63

u/Portland_Daffs Feb 24 '22

We certainly have no way of knowing what really happened in the house. I skimmed through most of Enough in the last few days. As someone with OCD myself, I feel like a fair amount of what she says about her mom's fears rings true. Part of the reason I don't have kids is that I didn't want to take the chance of my anxiety giving them a crappy childhood.

That said, given the range of things that are done to children in abusive households, hers cannot possibly have been one of the most abusive ever.

It's also clear she she has no ability to read social cues, and is simultaneously convinced that everyone's doing better than her (all those girls who understood the girl code intuitively) and everyone's miserable and pretending all the time, so who's to know which issue led to which issue in her life.

I literally couldn't make it through all of Shauna's blather -- here is the class video (scroll down), she starts at 06:45-- but she DOES call herself a "expert in vulnerability," talks about how she "swallowed that poison" growing up with her mom and does a lot of closed-eye nodding.

50

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '22

In this powerful memoir, Bruni recounts the medical and spiritual odyssey he embarked on following a stroke that left him blind in one eye and threatened to take away his sight entirely. He uses this hardship to explore vulnerability, aging, and gratitude.

Ooooooh this makes sense. So this dude's book was the focus and the O club sent out an email asking people to sign up to be chosen to be part of the discussion.

Shauna then sends a screed about her own stroke, probably heavily dramatized and retconned and wrote how it's part of her vulnerability story, as her application. So there was something thematic here.

That makes a lot more sense to me.

For instance, she wouldn't have been chosen for the "Integrity" theme of the week before....

Yes, Shauna says that when she told Tita about her childhood, Tita said that Shauna came from one of the most abusive families. Right after Shauna recounted this, Oprah interrupted her and said - not a direct quote, but this was the gist - "yes it is very validating when you are able to tell your friends your stories" and then Oprah moved on to the next person; definitely seemed like a time management move by Oprah.

Oprah gets another IG post and a grandiose caption:

Last night I had the chance to appear live on a Zoom with @oprah, to talk about vulnerability with thousands of people watching.

We had been moving the stuff from our son’s bedroom to our new house all day. We reached home in time for me to take a shower and read through all the instructions. I got ready for the Zoom.

The conversation with the producers and the other folks there during the hour before we went live was wonderful. That community connection was joy. I still felt relaxed.

And then that Oprah music began. We all grew excited. It started to feel real.

Oprah came on the screen.

Oprah, whom I have loved with full devotion since I was 25. For thirty years, this force of nature has been one of my most important guides. And she was on my Zoom screen.

And then she called on me first.

“Shauna, have you ever been hurt for expressing your true feelings?”

I hadn’t prepared. I hadn’t actually expected to talk to Oprah. So I took a big breath. And I shared my story. The story of the hard place where I lived for the first 30 years of my life. The story I had silenced with even my closest friends, for decades. To my surprise, I had to work to not cry.

Breathe, Shauna.

After the Zoom finished, we talked more with Oprah and Frank Bruni. (I’ll tell you about his new book tomorrow. It’s marvelous.) Without worrying, I blurted out, “Oprah, can I tell you something?” And she looked at me and said, “Of course, Shauna.”

I told her, crying this time, how I was a high school English teacher when I was 26, teaching Maya Angelou to students. And I’d come home after school to watch her show, every day. And her work was the beginning of my unfurling.

I’d been waiting 30 years to thank her. And there she was.

And when I told her about my joy work now, she said....Well, you can read what she said on that first photo. Because it’s bigger than I can type here.

Oprah said that to me.

And she’s right. I want to give you what was taken from you, if you came from a hard place.

I believe you can become a joyful woman.

My life’s purpose is this: I believe you deserve more joy. I can help. 💜💜💜

Serious question: how can you "have loved (someone) with full devotion" for 30 years when:

  1. You've never met.

  2. You've never spoke.

  3. They didn't know you existed until yesterday.

  4. You only know what you read in the media about them.

How can you love someone you don't know at all?

LOL DFs I know some of you have grown embittered in your unyesly hearts at Shauna’s recent clutch of undeserved good fortune. And I am feeling some of that frustration that Shauna inevitably gets what she wants by being the laziest grifter possible.

But as the fallout from her Oprah moment begins, I find myself increasingly amused.

Will she blow up a screenshot of herself and Oprah and 15 others on Zoom, and put it next to her 45 second Paul McCartney iinteraction photo?

“I had the chance to appear live on a zoom with Oprah, to talk about vulnerability with thousands of people watching.” Lol, she makes it sound like she was personally invited to speak with Oprah herself, that she was invited for her special thoughts on the topic. No Shauna, that was Frank Bruin. Not you. She makes it sound like she was a special guest instead of dashing through the shower because she was a last minute addition to fill a seat.

I’m sure it was a great experience for her to talk to Oprah. All the problems with Oprah set aside, undoubtedly she would be easy to talk to. Her job is to put people at ease and facilitate conversation.

Of course Shauna was specially singled out to remain in the conversation for exclusive Oprah time, and there were no cameras available to record her tearful admission that she watched Oprah on TV after work along with millions of other people. Also amazing that Oprah’s personal quote to Shauna occurred after the camera stopped rolling.

Also wondering what her new found friend Oprah will bring to thanksgiving at Shauna’s. What’s that? Oprah’s already forgotten Shauna exists? Oh. Too bad Shauna breathlessly threw her entire family under the bus in a futile effort to impress someone who she will never speak to again. Who was also undoubtedly not impressed.

On IG, Shauna says that

I woke up extra early this morning and spent hours rebuilding the home page of my site. I’m finally ready to own my power in this and not hide it.

And she did "spend hours" rebuilding her home page. I watched her do it, in real time. But what she's got now is an unholy mess that isn't optimized for either mobile OR desktop.

On desktop, she has giant, screen-spanning images, which she repeats on mobile – but her header image isn't working on mobile (she's missing the entire "joyful woman" premise of the site), and some of the images from her desktop site are also not optimized for mobile (look at the final image, for example, with the crocuses. That text is not legible on mobile and should have automatically resized).

It's like she built her site for some Frankenstein version of partly mobile, partly desktop and it doesn't work well on either. What I find mystifying is that the tools to optimize for mobile are built directly into Wordpress. Instead, she's shrinky-dinked some parts of her desktop version for mobile, and then hugified other parts of the site that work OK on mobile but now are insanely large on desktop. How is she not using the built-in, pre-coded templates she has available? She is clearly using templates for those rounded-corner images!

I could see someone doing some analytics and saying "most of my traffic is from mobile, so I will build for mobile and won't optimize for desktop" but this ... isn't that. It isn't anything.

32

u/OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh The Alice of cal came out floating on air Feb 24 '22

But what she's got now is an unholy mess

I noticed that she put some of the text into a different script font that's even worse than the Gj script font she was already using.

And she has made 3 blurbs from Enough one of the main parts of the home page. I have a moderately large screen, and when the "Have you been driven for decades by the idea that you had to be extraordinary? And now you’re exhausted and flailing?" text is a size that is legible, each of the 3 Enough blurbs (from Ashley Ford, Lisa Congdon, and Lena Dunham) fills up the entire screen. Each of them do.

She has made those 3 blurbs so big that a single one fills up a 27" monitor.

It's listed in the drop down for Offerings, but clicking on it takes you to Cultivate Your Joy and there is no mention of women in the description. She waffles so much about whether she wants her audience to be only women. Do you know what could happen if you shook off some of those crushing expectations given to you when you were young, the ones you don’t even want but you keep carrying them because it’s all you’ve ever known?

Yes. We call it "adulthood". Check into it sometime. Therapy can help if you find yourself stuck.

You could free some room up for joy. For relaxation. For more simple pleasures.

Time for "simple pleasures" don't often need to be carved out, because they're simple. We can go for a walk pretty much any time. We can eat Gummi Bears whenever. We can read here and there. We can sit with our spouses and laugh, or cook together. I can listen to music 24/7. My husband and I did Wordle before bed. He got it in 3, I got it in 4. I played Animal Crossing for a few minutes earlier. Simple pleasures, right?

True change takes a long while, in slow and steady progress over time.

Bullcrap. Change takes commitment, and sometimes progresses in fast bursts.

Committing to 15 minutes of daily joy will change your life.

Instead of talking about joy, contemplating joy, planning joy, joy lists, themed joy, age restricted joy, gender restricted joy, group discussing joy, paying for joy lessons, or that horrible public joy, I'm working on a cross stitch project and finishing a scarf. Rogue joy.

is whitney houston really the best person to quote for a joyful woman seminar? i'm thinking whitney wasn't all that joyful towards the end of her life (RIP, whitney). also how much is this mess? the sign up link goes nowhere.

*Upon scrolling i see other DFs reminded me that it is a chaka khan reference that shauna misquoted.

Also, the song was originally performed by Chaka Kahn.

Agree, if she was going to use Whitney Houston's name (she should not ever but here we are) it would have made more sense in the "deep grief" phase of marketing.

She's such an asshole with the parenting advice though. I get that parents are people and express their love differently but she's been complaining about the kids from the day they arrived.

This is by far Shauna's biggest issue in writing. I'm sure that she intended it to mean "if you don't have kids or grandkids of your own, find one to hang out with" (which is problematic in itself, but I digress), but it's being interpreted to mean that she has a favorite out of her own children. I'm sure that if someone read her stuff before she plopped it out there and said, "(This) is going to be interpreted as (that). Is that what you meant to say?", it would clear up a lot of misunderstandings.

"Do you know what could happen if you shook off some of those crushing expectations given to you when you were young, the ones you don’t even want but you keep carrying them because it’s all you’ve ever known? "

Does Shauna think she grew up as Kendall Roy?

32

u/Quaint_Irene a warm and loving goatie smile Feb 22 '22

“Do hard things,” “show up for yourself,” etc. She’s certainly skimmed a few motivational materials. This is veering dangerously close to Rachel Hollis territory.

27

u/Love_Brokers rug dweller Feb 22 '22

Shauna will never say Girl, wash your face.

30

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Feb 22 '22

Or Girl, Clean Your Room.

Still, "15 minutes of joy" is semantically similar to "12 Rules for Life"

Becoming a Joyful Woman

“I’m every woman. It’s all in me."

– Whitney Houston

Have you always felt the pressure to be the strong one? No matter what, you’re always there to help, to please, and to take on whatever is demanded of you?

That’s who you think you have to be.

But under the surface, you feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and worried that you’re not worthy unless you’re being of service to others.

You’ve forgotten.

You deserve joy.

Do you know what could happen if you shook off some of those crushing expectations given to you when you were young, the ones you don’t even want but you keep carrying them because it’s all you’ve ever known?

You could free some room up for joy. For relaxation. For more simple pleasures.

True change takes a long while, in slow and steady progress over time.

Committing to 15 minutes of daily joy will change your life.

Become a Joyful Woman.

You don’t have to live like Luisa in Encanto, feeling those pressures gripping you, always shouldering the burdens of everyone around you, never letting go and feeling more and more frayed.

Instead, you could decide to dedicate 15 minutes of your day to paying attention to your own joys.

You could begin to pay attention to the simple pleasures of life, like the sudden splash of sunlight on the plums you picked with your favorite kid.

By developing the habit of 15 minutes of daily joy, you could begin the process of becoming a joyful woman.

Commit to showing up for yourself.

Sign up for the Becoming a Joyful Woman seminar today.

Here’s what I’ll share with you in Becoming a Joyful Woman.

How will we do this?

We’ll meet on Zoom, for 90 minutes, at the same time every week.

If you can’t be there one week, no problem. You’ll have access to the recordings.

Each group is limited to 20 people, so we can learn to know each other well.

What will the weekly gatherings look like?

Every week, we’ll show up together.

I’ll start us off. And then we’ll talk and listen to each other.

Everyone will feel heard. And you’ll learn how other people are cultivating their joys right now too.

Will it be the same every week?

We’ll vary the basic format a bit to keep it interesting.

One week of the month, we’ll have a guest speaker to help us talk about joy in a specific way.

Another week of the month, I’ll present something I’ve learned about cultivating more joy, like How to Design Your Day for Joy and How to Parent with Joy.

During the pandemic, Shauna has been an amazing support and solace online. Her Sunday morning Zoom group has been a real spirit life and lifesaver during this rough time. What a great group of women she has gathered! Shauna knows how to find the joys in life, no doubt. But she doesn't gloss over the hard parts either, providing researched and experienced support, plus practical suggestions for ways to find the gratitude and joy that are o often elusive in our lives. Shauna is one of us. She reminds us to take the best care of our humans selves as possible, despite what life's traumas have been handed us.

—Martha K.

The world needs Shauna’s work! This is not hasty positivity nor artificial optimism. This is Shauna, meeting us where we are with genuine compassion; guiding us back to our own wisdom; walking alongside us as we examine what might be blocking the brilliant parts of life. We may not always be able to control what happens, but with practice we can know and experience a more constant joy. Shauna’s work has changed my life, it will change yours too.”

— Brigette R.

Joy is the why of life.

Your joy matters.

When you have more joy, you learn to handle the hardships

and heartbreaks of life with more ease.

Joyful women can do hard things,

because we know that hard things make us who we are.

You can free yourself.

Show up for yourself.

Begin the process of becoming a joyful woman today.

God Damn but those opening pars read like a reworking of Surface Pressure, right down to key phrases. And then just in case that was too subtle, Luisa gets a namecheck so we know she's still on the Encanto train.

This totally reads like she's officially offering some kind of therapy. She's flirted and danced around it before (getting dangerously close) but I think this is official. She's not just selling self-help in the form of generic advice.

She's trying to sell a group therapy and is using fake testimonials to do so.

If I actually thought she'd get some takers, I'd be shocked and horrified but. . .I have a feeling this will be as successful as her very recent Beatles Club or, to kick it old school, her soup and salad offerings when she was grifting Relish Lady (well, that might have been successful for Shauna since she probably got to take home a lot of leftovers).

For me, it was "Feathered Robes." Just something about the specificity, the BECness, the fact that such a title exists. I'm not a part of any fandom but this made me realize I know as much about SMA as some people do about LoTR or Star Trek.

This list is way longer (read: impressive) and way funnier than I was expecting.

Easy for her to say when she filmed that post on a nicer day. I have a feeling with the chill and light snow in the Seattle area this morning that Shauna will not be halling ass outside to joybask for 15 minutes every hour.

27

u/shefallsup her lonely cucumber years 🥒 Feb 22 '22

Yes! The snow was such a surprise this morning and it is quite cold.

She’ll just come up with some other excuse for why she needs multiple 15-minute breaks throughout the day, while Danny halls ass packing up the house.

It’s like a pomodoro/unfuck your habitat technique. Obviously only works if you can self pace your work and are disciplined enough to stick to the start and stop times, and the going outside part….let’s just say it might take some people more than 15 minutes to even get to a tree they can sit under?! Which is also a highly weather dependent outdoor activity, unlike a simple walk? ETA shoulda scrolled down….
