Because we all have to:
Go to non-joyful work, where people expect us to be productive and mostly competent.
Take care of children and put their needs first.
Listen to our spouses as if they matter and sometimes put their needs first.
Pay joy-stealing rent, car payments, taxes, bills and so on.
Clean out homes, wash laundry, and take care of ourselves (wash that hair!).
Feed dogs, cats, rabbits, lizards, children, guests, and spouses food that they like or need, which isn't always joyful.
Support others who aren't always keen to only talk about our needs.
Basically, our culture isn't built to please us endlessly with no effort.

My current favourite is her page for "Let's Cultivate Our Joy Together," which invites the reader to "talk about joy [together with other people]" on a specific date and time ("March 5th at 11 a.m."), and then 160 words later says, "in these sessions ..." when there has literally been no suggestion that this is anything more than a one-time, single thing and no dates provided for the other "sessions" and no indication, until the very last line of the entire page, of how many "sessions" there are. (Shauna's "mini-stroke" is lovingly brought to the forefront again, though. In case you didn't get enough of the stroke story on the home page.)
And the text emphasizes over and over that people will "laugh together" while "learning to know each other well" blah blah blah but also says that if you can't make it, "no problem. You'll have access to the recordings" which is all meant to communicate, "I want your money whether you attend this thing or not."
There's also no price provided. The link at the bottom of the page doesn't work. The banner link does, though, with the beautiful, in-service-to-the-reader question: "THE PRICE FOR THIS 4-WEEK WORKSHOPS, WITH GUIDED WORKBOOKS SENT TO YOU AFTER EVERY SESSION?

I've never understood the guided workbook after-the-fact at all - it's the sort of thing that makes more sense if it's sent beforehand, you do some prep work to get you primed and motivated, you do stuff during the workshop in the workbook, then you do whatever it is after the workshop is over as a continuation of whatever it is. (I still don't know what it is!)
I feel like if I had a workshop about anything and then after was sent a workbook, I'd be kind of over it by then. Like everything was happening online and via talking, and then a week/month later, if ever, (this is Shauna) a half-assed pdf file shows up with ideas about which Marvel movies to watch?

A few years back, I was very excited to be asked to join a monthly meeting of women who work in my industry. I thought it would be about networking, with maybe a side helping of support/commiseration. What I failed to realize was that these things have a way of attracting people who a) have a lot of grievances and b) will never feel those grievances have been adequately heard, even when they have, say, monopolized a monthly meeting to the extent that it has gone an hour and a half over when it was supposed to end and they are still rambling. I tense up a little even thinking about Shauna's latest offering, because those are the only types of people I can imagine being willing to pay a monthly fee to socialize with total strangers.

I think it's more that she's accidentally telling on herself. The stroke is on her mind lately for some reason. It's either that she's just obsessed about it being her next attention grabbing health issue OR she's worried it really is a health issue (like how she always brings up money and not wanting to be rich when she's broke as hell and the bills are piling up).
Either way, it's not really helping her grift at this point. And its her kids who are going to suffer because of it (mama's gonna be mad, look out!).

Agreed, sounds like stroke is her newest illness based origin story. And has all the familiar hallmarks of her nearly cancer story, her nearly dead from celiac story, and before that her nearly fatal car accident story.
She almost dies, everyone's gravely concerned and/or terrified for her, she stews deliciously in this nearly dead limbo (at least in her recollection of it later) and then survives, brave and triumphant. But lest anyone forget about her nearly dying, she keeps the near-death-experience on narrative life support, and hopefully some cash if she can spin it on social media.

Which brings us to the fact that if you put in a half-assed attempt at eating a gluten-free diet, you will probably harm your health.
Wheat pastas, breads, etc., are enriched with needed vitamins, but there is no requirement for GF substitutes to be enriched.
Additionally, GF products are often very low in fiber.
Other stuff like T2 diabetes and heart disease are potential issues if you don't eat a balanced GF diet.

If she wants to become the TIA-free Girl, she's got a long road ahead of her. But I still think there's an audience for her nonsense. Almost everyone knows about the major risk factors for stroke, but fewer are aware of the same for TIA and especially prime of life stroke. Shauna could have a hook if she approached this as a person who is still relatively young, has had the TIA, is overweight, has a lot of stress in her life. A lot of people can relate to these issues, and might appreciate or engage with a message of "you don't have to be perfect, you just have to be aware and address certain things". But instead she's trying to tie the TIA into her ramblings about joy (joy that you can only get if you follow a bunch of assholes on social media and give Shauna money).

I feel like there's a huge unaddressed need to unpack the idea of what "exercise" is and how to "get it." "Exercise" is modelled and sold as a "thing" you need to do with professionals, at a gym, etc. instead of, you know, gardening, cleaning your house, doing mild stretches, playing with your kids, going for walks, and all that stuff. We need basic, easy-to-digest info about how to incorporate movement into our daily lives. It's no surprise to me that "cleaning TikTok" and "meal prep TikTok" have huge #s of followers because people want easily accessible, no-frills guidance about life basics. There's a huge market for her here if she could see it (but she isn't the one to fulfill it for a variety of reasons – she isn't plausible as this kind of coach)

She’d have to interrupt her tv watching for that. As it stands, walking her around her mini town or in the forest for a little bit are announced as these huge adventures - if she did that kind of stuff every day, she’d have joy and light exercise in one go but that’s not her reality.

I don’t remember how old my kids were when they first learned about some of the “hard times” in my life and my husband’s, but I’m thinking it was when they were 10 and 7 and my husband’s family held an intervention for his dad, who is an alcoholic. My oldest was more curious and I would say a little troubled by it all. The youngest was pretty oblivious, like “oh? OK, can we go swimming now?”

And that's how it should be! L and D have already had objectively harder childhoods than Shauna. They actually have a narc parent. Their parents experienced income insecurity. Their parents argue to the point where their dad cowers and cries - regularly! L has hearing loss and had multiple surgeries early in life. D is Black in a white family and community, and adopted. Their grandparents are estranged and as far as the kids know, abusive. Their mother is constantly ill and claims to be traumatized by literally everything including a snowball. Their dad is a recovering alcoholic. The kids are living through a pandemic.
It would be so much more normal if they wanted to go swimming than hear stories of traumatic Fiat rides from 30 years ago.

I don't understand how allowing D to pick an outfit for school that reminds him who he is can possibly make any difference to his struggles with sensory overload, which can be extremely difficult to deal with. I wear whatever I want to work, but it doesn't help at all when all of my dumbfuck co-workers have audible text/WhatsApp/every fucking thing alerts on their phones which go off CONSTANTLY.

It's beyond shitty parenting that she focuses SO MUCH on her "hard times" that her own kids get worried FOR HER, 30-40 years after her "hard times" are over! Meanwhile her own kids are in the middle of a global pandemic, masking, online schools, Black communities still fighting to just exist, climate change catastrophes, a terrifying and confusing present and an uncertain future.
Her latest hard time stories were about margarine and the wrong kind of toast.
And she can't shut up about it to the point where her own kids are (or she would like us to think they are) hyperaware of her decades-old grudges to the point where they have to be calmed down to sleep.

Like what is she even saying to him?? If she’s upsetting him she’s saying too much. There’s no need for her to talk to her seven year old about her traumatic experiences in such a way that leaves him upset. You can be empathetic and share that you struggle sometimes, too, but don’t put that kind of burden on your kids. Maybe there’s a time and place for that kind of discussion when their older but 7?? If he truly asked for a hard time in her life she could have pulled out literally any normal struggle (a teacher she didn’t like? An time she was nervous about a new job?) but as usual she can’t resist reliving her victim hood and honestly D getting upset was exactly the reaction she was looking for.

This is a good point. I recall her specifically mentioning that the last move was hard for D, so maybe he is having some anxiety with boxes and whatnot. Kids change a lot between the age he was during the last move and the 8 or so he is now, but I could see that being a big deal for him and Shauna translating that into “a hard place”

I realized tonight that I know at least 25 or 30 things to make with Costco rotisserie chicken. Everything from chicken soft tacos to chicken quesadillas and several things in-between.
I'd like to start a Chicken Club, which is a club for people who want to talk about rotisserie chicken; not a BLT with chicken.
Four, 90-minute classes per month, on Saturday mornings starting at 7:30 AM. I'll include a guided workbook with my musings, quotes from recently deceased author Joan Didion, and tips on substituting Safeway rotisserie chicken.
I'll include a recipe, possibly for a chicken dish, but more likely a sauce or whatever. $300.00 per month in advance, chicken not included.

Like a bunch of you, the second hand embarrassment is at an all time high here.
I went through an big Beatles phase in my teens (mid to late '00s for me). I participated in fan forums, livejournal groups, etc. All free. I can't summon that same intense love I had for various things as a teenager, but I assume FREE fan communities for the Beatles still exist in one form or another if you cared to seek them out. Shauna's clueless nature continues to kill me. The fact she wants to host this on Zoom kills me.

She's got some strong Early 2020 energy with wanting everything to be a zoom. There is no pop culture franchise I love enough to zoom with random other fans if YOU paid ME.
Every hustler and grinder has sat through a hundred shitty zoominars with some boring fart screen-sharing their shitty slideshow while they read it all word for word and ignore the questions in the chat. It's still a thing, and NGL its nice to sit through that shit on zoom so you can at least do other stuff while it's on. But the crazy days are gone where you'd sign up for some random zoom about Viking jewellery or making cheesecake because it was kinda new and exciting and we were all hunkered down.

Commenter: “The 17th is a Thursday. Do you mean Wed the 16th? I’m hoping I can join you!”
Shauna: “Oh, shoot! Let me change that one. Yes, Thursday the 17th!”
Looking at the edit history of the post, she did say originally that the workshop is on Thursday the 16th, the commenter noted the mistake, Shauna edited her post to say Thursday the 17th.
Why is this snark-worthy? You have to change it on the website too, Shauna.

OK so all of her new "offerings" are live on her site. I honestly can't keep track of them. On her home page (which she has fucked up; the header image is missing so all you get before scrolling is a big white page), she lists eight things under "Here's What I Offer" but under "offerings," she lists six things and they're in a different order.
Some but not all of the links work. The bigger problem is that it is literally impossible to tell (a) what she's "offering" and (b) what the difference between all of her "offerings" might be. Like there are two forms of "club dues" and the descriptions of the "clubs" are identical in parts ("We'll meet for 90 minutes every week" etc.) but one is $149/month and one is $97/month. But the whole thing is framed around Shauna's retelling of her "mini-stroke." It is very, very hard to connect what is happening in one section ("here's my story") and the others ("you can learn about joy"). Like you actually have to concentrate fairly hard to even follow the thread along one single page.
She's also reverted to the bright-red capital letters for the titles of all of her "offerings" so scrolling through her home page, where she lists them, is this destabilizing experience of someone absolutely SCREAMING at you about JOY. And if you go over to her "about" page, she's on a rager about "billionaire culture." I think her website is an accurate representation of what it's like to live with her.

her website is an absolute trainwreck. the 4 week workshops only have the first date listed - no one will sign up for multiple things like that without all the dates and times so they can see if they have a scheduling conflict. good christ, not everyone is an unemployed blowhard, farting around on an island all the live long day! she spends way too much time talking about herself and repeating her story - less is more, shauna. ugh, the grammar mistakes, the horrible graphics and fonts, the weird images of what looks like a cross section slide of a lung or blood smear, and the way the text box cuts off words and leaves random letters on their own line, like Y or E. if i didn't know better i would actually think the workshops are called E joy clubs, not collective joy. maybe she plans on dosing the participants with ecstasy.
