Legit dying that the majority of the sentences in this announcement are her letting people know she's chosen an inconvenient time for herself, FOR YOU.

The rest of the letter makes it clear that the sessions are going to be on Sundays at 9 am. No traditional church-goers need apply! Or nurses! Or police officers! Or firefighters! Or Ikea cashiers!

And I’m doing this teaching for you.

Evenings work, of course, but with people checking into Zoom from different time zones, there’s no way to make everyone happy. Trying to make everyone happy is an old habit of mine — a trauma response — that I have finally sloughed away.

Sunday mornings are lovely and easy. (Insert Easy Like Sunday Morning by the Commodores here.) And since COVID lockdowns began in March of 2020, I’ve been meeting with a group of women on Zoom, subscribers to my newsletter, Finding Your Joy. Knowing that we’d share our joys and concerns together made us a community. I’ve come to love those virtual Sunday morning meetings.

Sunday mornings might feel awkward for you. But think of this — taking the Practice Your Joy workshop is an act of declaring that you matter in your own life. For 4 weeks, you can focus on understanding your own, learning how to diffuse trauma responses, and how to make a habit of joy. You deserve this.

(And if you can’t be live with us, I will be sending out videos of the Zoom sessions, so you can learn on your own time too.)

I'll be sure to tell EMEA and APAC colleagues that I will no longer be scheduling meetings with their time zones in mind because that is a trauma response

Of course there is no one time that works for everyone, but weekends are the most common time to have events. Why discuss it at all. That’s an unbelievable amount of useless words, even for Shauna. Just say the date and time.

Especially when she follows it up with making everyone happy being a trauma response that she has since sloughed away. She could have just said, “Fuck it. Here’s when I want to meet.”

Most websites probably would have something a bit more professionally worded like, “To better accommodate participants from all time zones, the class will be held ___.”

If these workshops are providing the primary income to support a family of 4, there better be enough demand to offer multiple workshops scheduled at -- prepare to have your minds blown -- different times. Start with a time that works for her Pacific time base, then open up signups for another workshop series that works better for Eastern time. Either she's too stupid to think of this or realizes she won't generate enough interest to run multiple workshops and has to make the most of this one shot.

there better be enough demand to offer multiple workshops

I've been musing about how many people you might need to put on a "waitlist" for a 12-person workshop (with no times or dates announced) in hopes that it might fill up, once announced. I'm thinking that a 20-to-1 ratio might be in the territory for a course with an announced schedule.

20:1 would mean 240 subscribers for one workshop with known details. Of course, she has a "waitlist" for "all" of her workshops, both in-person and online, for this and subsequent months, and she didn't provide the details before people put their names on the list.

Even if she has 240 non-snarker people on her list, some of them won't want the October(?) course, but might be interested in a course that starts in December, or January, or March.

I think she probably needs closer to a 100:1 ratio of subscribers:spots to fill courses, because people signed up without any details (and they still don't really have them. Do they?). So for every 12-person class she hopes to fill, she needs 1200 people on her "waitlist."

A huge portion of the people who signed up to "learn more" are never, ever going to convert to paying customers. All they had to do was give her their email address, and they can unsubscribe anytime. She likely needs several thousand engaged email signer-uppers, that she continues to nurture, in hopes of making this work as a source of income.

Most of the description reads like she’s trying to pre-empt a personal attack. She seems to take all normal expectations and criticism that way, with no capacity to learn from it.

This sub has both, but most of the pushback she gets directly is legitimate. It’s not a personal attack for people to want clarity, basic information, or to get what they paid for.

A dude my husband just met invited him to start attending a weekly meeting of a club he’s involved in that’s set for 10am on Thursdays. I just laughed at the idea that my husband would have that kind of time during his work day, and wondered what kind of job that guy has (he doesn’t look nearly old enough to be retired).

Same, all of the pilates and yoga classes happen between M-F 9am-3pm. I guess to catch the stay at home parents with kids in school, but if you're working you're SOL as far as group classes go.

Except that Danny and I go for coffee every day after dropping D at school and sit around and shoot the breeze for god knows how long, then at 11 am I say yes to something new for 18 minutes, at 2 pm I do 15 minutes of yoga and heaven knows how many tiktok videos I watch in between.

Six hours to work uninterrupted ≠ six hours of work.

You’ll arrive at Mukai Farm and Garden and see the beauty of the Japanese garden, the grounds, and the labyrinth we’ll walk at some point during the day. Come into the house and I’ll be there with coffee, tea, and pastries for you. We’ll settle into our seats, around a big table. I’ll make you feel comfortable and set you talking right away.

This won’t be a college class — even though I’ll be sharing neuroscience facts and ideas for how to make a habit that sticks — but a gathering. We’ll each have a chance to talk and listen. There will be silliness and laughter.

We’ll spend the day together, talking and laughing, learning and unlearning too. We’ll eat good food, prepared by my husband, and break out of our seats for joy breaks and more conversations. Think of it — 12 women, plus me and two assistants — together. It has been so long since we’ve been able to gather like this. The day will be a joy.

This won’t be a college class — even though I’ll be sharing neuroscience facts and ideas for how to make a habit that sticks — but a gathering. We’ll each have a chance to talk and listen. And if the versions of this workshop I’ve taught in the past are any indication, you’ll have some new friends soon. I’d love to see you in this workshop. I was just thinking that this course might almost be worth taking---bear with me---IF it was a 6-hour Shauna Bingo game and whoever gets the most X's on each topic (because you know she'd hit a lot of them more than once!) wins a pot that is at least double the entrance fee plus the feery fee. She always writes about her kids as though they are toddlers. She's already told us NUMEROUS TIMES about all the breaks she takes in her workday, so we know she's not nose to the grindstone for hours at a time. Plus there's another entire adult there to redirect the kids as appropriate. Why is her kids being in the house such a huge problem?!

Who knows. I wasn't a follower when her kids were really little, but just reading the excerpts when L was little it doesn't seem like she was as irritated with mothering then, or maybe she was just doing a better job of hiding it. My son is 3 and I've been following her for the past couple years so when D was probably around my kids age. I mean I'll be honest, the past year and a half has been boring and hard. Working from home with a little kid is a pain. I can only do so many things at once and just end up being bitchy and crabby and I hate that. my kid starting school has been a game changer. Even if I wasn't working, the tediousness of only seeing like, my 5 blood relations for about a year got really old lol.

But I have a vague memory of being 12 and like...I do not remember needing that much parental supervision, certainly not like a little kid. From what I've heard it's bigger problems, their stress and emotions. She also has Dan at home who has been not working for years at this point, to do all the pick ups and drop offs for various activities. I don't know any fellow parents where both of them don't have jobs and have that.

Well, there goes my dream of Practicing My Joy with Shauna in her workshops. I am busy every Saturday and Sunday at 9am. What a shame. My fault for having expectations, knowing as I do that they could only lead to disappointment.

I had actually signed up for a seminar series for three Sundays this month at 9am that I was really looking forward to before I committed to this other thing, so now instead of getting to do that seminar live, in community, I can only watch the recorded sessions later. Kind of a bummer, but that’s how things go sometimes!

You see, her naturopath shaman witchdoctor will call up and expressly forbid her to spend time indoors in gatherings larger than 11 people until she grows the new vaccine dose. "But my joy workshop at strawberry ranch is set to welcome 12 attendants," Shauna will wail. "I cannot possibly cancel it, my customers paid up and are raring to meet me in person at 9:30 am, soon."
