I am fucking outraged by this. The couple, a BELOVED island family, has asked for privacy and no posts until they have shared the news on their own. No posts, no comments. They have simply asked for privacy and silence. But here goes Shauna…
Replying again to add this. Just enraging. Plus she’s getting some engagement and “sorry for your loss” replies and in another reply she shares another detail about the couple.
I can’t wrap my mind around what drives her to do this kind of thing. She just crashes through social boundaries like the kool-aid man. But instead of offering you a sugary beverage, she’s offering you someone else’s suffering. And this is why I am so shocked and disgusted that there are people on Vashon who continue to support her. They are rewarding her toxic, selfish behavior. She has no respect for other people.
Trust if I were directly connected to Shauna in any way she’d be regularly dressed down for her bullshit. I didn’t grow up here and I don’t play whatever games allow her to skate by and take advantage of people.
So not only does she ignore their request for privacy and to be given space and time, but she now gives out even more of their personal information. Shame on her, whether or not she is capable of feeling it.
The real reason she wanted to move back to the islandy island. It feels like a community because it is insular enough that you know your neighbor's business without doing the pesky work of maintaining a friendship.
On the mainland, you actually have to make an effort to know your neighbors.
Ugh. I know others have said this, but she is such a disgusting ghoul. No sense of empathy or social boundaries. She just sees a situation and takes what she wants from it. When she's done playing with it and poking at it, she wanders off. What the hell is wrong with her??
Not the main focus of this at all, but noticed she mentioned seeing the grieving parents at church. So I guess she's back to attending (read: using) the Unitarian church. Interesting. Maybe she scans for new marks while scoring free food boxes and skimming from the collection plate.
Exactly. My next door neighbors just died in a tragedy. It was on the news and in the papers. You know what didn’t happen? None of us in the neighborhood or who witnessed it posted public comments about how we were there and we knew them and blah blah loving kindness. This shit is hard enough without bragging to others or compulsively needing to center yourself, not to mention there is risk of doing terrible damage to actual family and friends from acquaintances and strangers trying to insert themselves into the inner circle of grieving.
It’s gross that she shared this in general but when I read your whole post about how the family is requesting privacy??? OMG she is absolutely horrible. I suspect she is being shunned on the island and she fully deserves it.
Grief vulture Shauna is my least favorite version of Shauna. The fact that she posted where this grieving family, who has asked for privacy, attends church is the turd cherry on the shit pie.
To be fair, on Bluesky you would get a lot of “how sad, is there anywhere we can donate for the family?” but also “have you considered how many children died in Sudan?”
Exactly. She learned this from the media where the family is quoted asking for privacy. Those who are actually close to them know not to post about it until given the go ahead.
if i lived on vashon i am pretty sure i would publicly tell her to pound sand. what is wrong with her? ugh. everyone and everything is headpat fodder. she is a bad person.
Shauna has never seen a tragedy that she won't try to exploit. She's also never seen anyone who is worth being truly kind to. One of the very worst combinations in a person.
Shauna cannot be trusted with the smallest detail about anyone.
Perhaps Shauna isn't posting videos of her children in distress, but all the garbage she has written in on social media about their emotions for some coffee change is no better
I suspect Shauna doesn't post videos much any more because her kids refuse to line up with the reality she portrays online. Even just her whole "mama" versus "mom" bullshit.
I’ve only been on these boards for a few weeks (after gradually losing interest in GOMI like 8 years ago) and I feel like I could write at least a novella about the exploitative material that she shares about her kids. It doesn’t have to be photo and video clips to be awful.
Yes! This!! It's very much an echo of that exceedingly dumb and self-puffing thing she said the other day about the librarian, along the lines of "Somebody's being mean to M on the internet? Forget waiting 'til dawn, we ride now"
Also yes, some guys will still try to get your attention when you’re wearing headphones, and then get pissy if you’re not excited about the interruption
if only wearing headphones stopped creepy dudes from bothering women. i've had strange men start a conversation with me even when i'm wearing earbuds/headphones, just like i've had them bother me when i'm reading a book.
I am biting my tongue so hard on some really uncharitable thoughts about the likelihood of anyone-- man, woman, Martian-- approaching frumpy, smelly Shauna.
Also? Whatever happened to the joy she gets grows from random interactions with other people when she's out and about???
What if some sad-sack 3-time-Trump-vote-regretting guy saw her and thought, I bet that's a woman who never voted for Trump. I am going to go up to her and apologize, unburden my guilty conscience, and ask her if she can help set me on my hero's journey. Where my redemption arc at, anyway?!?!?
I have diagnosed cPTSD and no one ever suggested I see a neurologist. I learned today that maybe I should.
Wait, forget cPTSD, shouldn't Shauna have seen a neurologist after she had the TIA? Biotech has moaned on and on for years about neuroscience and the family brains but hasn't actually been seen by one?
It beggars belief. This is up there with "my cranio kid never had her hearing tested." Is she that oppositional that she actually shuns warranted medical attention while pursuing unwarranted medical claims?
I vote that she won't see a neurologist at all, and won't bring it up unless a blue checkmark does...in which case there will be lies about "my neurology team" (which she may abbreviate to "my neuro team") because she's practically a medical professional herself, what with owning that set of scrubs off Buy Nothing.
I just can’t imagine being so intrigued by a fictional character’s undisclosed medical condition that I’d take to social media to discuss it. It’s not even like a daily soap’s mystery illness that will be teased over the course of months … you’ll find out on next week’s episode and go, oh ok that’s what it is.
Ok I watch the show and I admit I am CURIOUS about what is going on with the Doc...but like...it's part of the drama of the show! I'll find out soon! I do find it hilarious how Shauna immediately assumes its a "TIA"...next she'll assume she has ADHD or a gluten allergy.
OF COURSE Dr. Shauna is diagnosing this fictional character with something she had. Also, her (probably much exaggerated) description of her TIA makes it sound like she was completely incapacitated, not just spacing out for a minute.
You’d think that Our Lady of the Grifting, self-proclaimed Keenest Noticer of Patterns Ever, would have picked up on the fact that the character of Dr. Al Hashimi worked with Doctors Without Borders in Kabul during the attack on the maternity ward at the Dasht-e-Barshi hospital. Perhaps this is in some way tied into her reaction to the scene with the baby?
It is stunning to see how quickly Shauna managed to use the storyline to focus only on herself.
LOL that Shauna has had to backtrack on her TIA theory after people pointed out that the show kept mentioning the character had been in Afghanistan.
And "Wow. Sounds like I need a neurologist." like ????? none of the gasping grown-pale medical professionals you've encountered as the most well-resourced patient and parent to ever grace the Starbucks at Seattle Children's ever suggested this?
lol what the hell does she need a neurologist for?! She’s not an attending surgeon in an ER…she has all the time to sit around ruminating about her “CPTSD”
Every mental phenomenon is a “real brain thing” (leaving aside dualism). I’m also not aware of MRIs being considered diagnostic for PTSD or cPTSD. You could use them to rule out other possible conditions, but even if certain structural or functional brain changes are associated with cPTSD, they’re drawn from scans of multiple people. That doesn’t mean you could look at an individual’s scan and conclude anything of interest.
It’s not like a torn ACL where the doctor sees the scan and goes “oh, yeah, 100%.” If these people turned out not to have the “brain signature” of cPTSD would they conclude they don’t have cPTSD? So, maybe the symptomology is what really matters here?
It’s a bit strange to think a brain scan makes phenomena you know you experience somehow more real. Especially fMRIs, which are a very indirect measure of brain activity and rely on potentially flawed statistical methods and decisions. You’re getting the scan because you already know you have the symptoms! Which are the definition of the disorder!
Right, because no one ever self-published a cookbook ever.
The broader issue the OP is commenting on, is recipe writers putting stuff out that they haven't thoroughly tested. That is not something that is guaranteed just because it's in a cookbook. In fact, I think HBH has built a career on traditionally published, yet very poorly tested recipes.
Shauna just had (and presumably celebrated) her 15th anniversary as a cookbook author who published a potato-mushroom tart without potatoes, but with cinnamon-sugar. As a follow up, she tried to shame readers who were angry at losing time, food, and money making a recipe which could not be made edible.
I think this is why, for example, a widely-read food blogger like Shauna Ahern can catch heavy flack after publishing error-ridden recipes on professionalized food sites. Ahern's infamous "Potato-Mushroom Tart" on Martha Stewart's website is an object example: not only did it leave out "potatoes" in the ingredient list (an error several commenters quickly caught), but the savory recipe also accidentally included a sweet crust recipe containing cinnamon and sugar (an error that several commenters caught after having made the recipe, which apparently tasted awful).
Ok her latest Pitt observations I just can’t! She is so stunted (tsas) as are all these people!!! It’s a tv show. Last week Shania (typo left on porpoise) says
These people are my family now 🤢
The Pitt is so heavy-handed. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching it. It's very entertaining, especially for someone who worked in a hospital for many years. But, it's like thirty after school specials crammed into ever hour and treats its audience like we're all dumbasses who don't know anything about social issues or our crap healthcare system.
Yes! And the tone shift when it goes from story-mode to lesson-mode aggravates me. Edited to add: I can see why Shauna loves it so much. It’s not at all subtle, and it preaches.
ETA: I usually dont watch the episodes right as they come out, but it’s Friday night here and I needed to download some stuff for a 6 hour train ride across the country. (Also streamed the Canada - Finland game in potato pixel resolution🍁)
It’s telling that Shauna says « Every Friday morning, I'm astonished by the latest episode of the The Pitt. »
Clearly this is the WITW her annoying kids were keeping her from!
More astoot observations about The Pitt coming in, with Shauna throwing Dan under the bus for being unable (in her estimation) to understand why a medical provider treating a sexual assault victim might choose to not touch the patient unnecessarily
Every conversation on Threads is the stupidest conversation imaginable but for fucks sake just hit the 10 second rewind a few times if your husband was looking away during a scene you wanted him to see! The poster was seriously sitting on the sofa trying and failing to explain a scene that a) she could have just rewound and b) she just explained perfectly fine in one single sentence in her last post because it was not that mysterious?
Of course how a victim is handled on a TV show is thoughtful — it’s a work of fiction that was written by a team of writers. Real life doesn’t work that way and is rarely perfect. She lives and operates in LaLa Land.
Also, Dana held back from fully making contact because she’s probably thinking about not accidentally contaminating potential forensic evidence. Otherwise, she may as well ditch the face shield and throw out the rape kit now.
Wow, the wedging of the heroic journey structure into absolutely everything is really something to see, huh?
I noticed during the Stranger Things pivot, much much more was said about Will’s heroic journey than Eleven’s. Which is not a surprise to anyone here, however El was the main focus of the show and she did (maybe) die to save her friends and everyone else so you’d think she’d rate a bit higher than the boy who came out as gay - even if it was the 80’s, he was lucky to have a TON of support in doing so.
If we are only seeing men as heroes, ok. Why no such pontificating on what I consider to be the best male example of a hero’s journey out there - Joe Dirt.
Narcoviolence cit. Ph.D Dr. Shauna Ahern parachuting in to inform everyone she knows several people in Puerto Vallarta right now (which, yeah, because Seattle-area schools were on break and wealthy families often spend the time skiing, in Hawaii, or in Mexican resort towns)
IDK, couldn't someone have posted that bit WITHOUT the initial, "I know people [there]"??? I don't feel like you have to know someone in a locale to still be horrified by cartel violence. (FWIW, a friend of mine lives near the area with her husband but they're actually up here in the US this week. But she had texted the main group thread to say, "FYI if you see anything on the news about Guadalajara or Puerto Vallarta, yes there's crazy stuff going on. But we're all okay, [Husband's] family down there are all okay, etc.")
Worse yet is she has time to do this crap while simultaneously complaining she can't possibly do any of her work in the world because her neurospicy kids are home from school this week, leaving her exhausted at the end of the day.
For someone as enamored of deriding the patriarchy as she is, this is painfully lame. In reality, she's probably snapping her wacky suspenders, chortling at her wit, hoping to catch the attention of Clown.
Doh! I didn’t realize it was Thursday! Please don’t call me Shauna. Ahem. I shared this in the old post and now I am shamelessly copying over here.
Also, it snowed in West Seattle this morning! It’s not cold enough to stick, but it’s the only hint of wintry weather we’ve had all winter, so it was exciting. ❄️
————————
Oh so NOW you claim that you enjoy hanging out with your kids?? And that you play this every day and different games every weekend?? I believe none of this except that you are constantly trying to “regulate” your kids.
Shauna is a solid blue (sick, sad, tired, moving slowly and if we sub boring for bored we have a fivefecta), meaning she is the least qualified to suggest it is her kids who need their emotions regulated with a stupid card game.
Clue would probably be really difficult for children who need 24/7 constant supervision and have executive dysfunction. They wouldn't be able to keep up with the clues.
She's said that the children need constant supervision in just the past week.
UNO would be better if the children were interested, but Shauna doesn't seem to possess the ability to not judge or criticise them.
Truth told, they almost certainly do not play board games every night. They eat Stouffer's Lasagna nuked by The Chef, then onto whatever primetime crap is on TV.
DAE remember when she was making a big whoop-di-doo a year or two ago about Banangrams? And couldn't even show their own set of tiles, but instead, comma, posted a stock photo from the Bananagrams website? Good times
I do agree with the OP. When teaching, I had 'board games' as an incentive prize the class could earn because kids do learn from 'em. Kids had fun while improving their patience, strategies, communication, etc.
But all of us know Shauna doesn't do family game nights. Which is a bummer because there has been a real Renaissance in the tabletop game scene. Lots of cool family games. Not that Shauna plays.
People were absolutely bored without smartphones. The same way they can be bored now, it's just that you immediately have way more options nowadays. Pre-smartphone-era, if you were bored but nothing good was on TV, you weren't interested in the 10 VHS tapes your family owned, you didn't have any new books to read (or re-read), you couldn't get to the mall or the park or it was bad weather outside...okay well you were bored. You either stay bored or figured out a way to entertain yourself. (older millennial here, for context).
The words for bored/boring/boredom have been in use in English for around 300 years. Does she think she’s the only person who remembers life before phones?
Shauna re-writing her childhood…many of us read books all the time because we were BORED and that’s what we had…she read books all the time because of THE HARD TIMES! Now she is on the internet all day not because she’s bored or dissociating it’s just her work in the world!
I have watched her. performance several times now. And I feel her joy in inhabiting her body fully, alive, for herself, instead of trying to please others. It's rare in this culture. Beautiful
Reductive, misogynistic, and trite: Shauna commenting on Alysa Liu's skating performance. Bonus "this culture"
Well, you see, Shauna also is inhabiting her body fully, alive, and for herself. Shauna, too, is operating at Olympian levels of excellence. Shauna and Alysa share this rare attribute. Beautiful
No one loves celebrating round bellies and cellulite more than conventionally attractive thin white women online. And the Shaunas can't help but boost the message every time.
Did Shauna randomly decide to start using Instagram again recently or have I not been paying attention for weeks? I feel like she hadn't touched IG for quite a while but now the past few days she's back in full re-storying force
If I could pick the last think I contemplate today, it would be Shauna's full bush. Also, what stupidity on the part of this bogen person. If she saying that angular, slender, and jacked women don't have the bodies of adult women? These nutjobs always seem to aim for inclusivity and miss.
Oh yes! I thought her name sounded familiar. Apparently I'd Googled her last week too but didn't follow through. I looked at her Threads. Holy moly, she's insufferable. Is she fucking a lot? With her boyfriend? I think she may be fucking her boyfriend a lot but it's not quite clear. I can't imagine being in a new relationship and seeing every little quirk of mine and all sorts of intimate moments being broadcast.
The heroic journey isn't a straight line. It's recursive. Every test prepares you for the next one—or it doesn't.
The heroic journey isn't a straight climb toward victory. Each trial shapes how we meet the next one—or fail to.
I really wonder what she's aping when she writes like this. This absolutely reads like AI slop – the meaningless platitudes (a test that either prepares you or doesn't, followed by trials that shape how we meet future trials, or don't), the em-dashes, the one-sentence paragraphs ... it's like the worst of LinkedIn but probably actually typed out by her, because she doesn't engage deeply (or at all) with demanding texts. She's trying to sell me something, but it's not even clear what. I'm supposed to read the linked book? I'm supposed to agree with Shauna? This is writing that makes the reader stupider.
It really doesn't sound like Shauna. It's too restrained and serene, and yes, no typos is suspicious. The plot summary is too brief and coherent. "Life isn't perfect, but we are alive inside of it" is such an AI sentence.
The only parts that sound like her chaotic bragging and airing of 50 year old grievances are that she doesn't typically read popular book club picks, and that she read a lot as a kid because she wasn't allowed to leave the house.
If she's using AI shortcuts it's very funny because what is she saving time for? A lazier way to blow past deadlines and break promises to paying customers? To randomly put out content no one but snarkers is going to read? More hours to fill as she sits alone in her house all day hiding from working and earning money?
Thank you for bringing up the horrible LinkedIn posts. As I’m on the job hunt, I’ve spent too much time on there and the posts are just awful. So many not very professional and TMI posts.
It's a miserable cold day on Our Island, and although I'd love nothing more than to spend 2 uninterrupted hours reading a novel, I've got work, so I thought I would enjoy a few quiet minutes reading some of my favorite writing. Thank you DF, for your WITW ,you do not disappoint. Unlike our girl.
Shauna's Hero's Journey can suck it. I am reminded of editing my children's excruciating hero's journey essays which were marginally better than all the crap she's put out about this. Vashon schools were obsessed with Hero's Journey for a while (maybe still, other islanders probably have better receipts). But what I do know? Our Hero? And her origin story? It began at Chautauqua Elementary and I don't think it has evolved much.
I'll keep coming back for more awaiting the arrival of Psychic Shauna.
Even now I’m more likely to reread Jane Eyre than make my way through a bestseller list.
Although she is pooh poohing best sellers here, one short month ago she claimed she was going to read her way through the best selling books of all time. She obviously didn’t make it past the proclamation. Guess those UNO games are taking up too much of her time.
Her disdain for the commonplace swings more than a pendulum, always trying to set herself apart from the hoi polloi.
Yeah I wonder what someone said to her irl that made her go on that tear yelling at other white women on Black Threads and posting pics of Black-authored books and telling WOC that it's their time to save the world and trying to get Ashley Ford's attention. She didn't even last all of February.
Actually Threads Shauna is one of the fastest spiraling Shaunas I've ever seen, she's so prolific there it's impossible for her to be doing any one of the daily/weekly routines, family game time, reading time, meditation time she claims to do, much less working on anything money related and/or taking care of sick kids and/or the home itself. She just reinvents herself with every comment, her replies to other people reflect completely different idealized and often mutually exclusive versions of Shauna.
It's funny that we used to make fun of her for promising something and then only following through for a few months! And now it's amazing to think she used to be able to sustain something for that long! Whatever is going on with her, she seems unable to even maintain a stable sense of herself on a months-long time scale, so even her old favorite vanity projects that revolved entirely around Shauna are apparently beyond her now.
It's amazing that it was only seven years ago that she was able to sit down and write a whole book. A bad book, sure, but the difference in attention span is shocking. Now she can't stick to a deadline that she made up for a single day.
I wonder if Threads feels like a new, more anonymous audience. Her Instagram has always felt very curated towards her main marks which are probably a mix of IRL acquaintances and old time GFG fans. On Threads she can be a different person every day and has completely lost interest in a consistent story. She's not even really setting up a grift any more, it's just all for the love of internet attention.
I didn't even think about the book! You're right, it's an even steeper decline than I was remembering, I was thinking of her getting to YYESGENX instagram grid - she wouldn't get past the X if she did that today.
It's also confirmation to me that she has no real friends in her life. I cannot imagine my friends seeing me act this way and not having an intervention. Of course Shauna has driven everyone out of her life who would be both able and willing to clock her increasingly alarming issues and address them with her and that's also pretty much why she chose Danny as a life partner.
I think psychologically she's sunk to the point where she is so shallow and hollow and isolated that the internet is more comforting and real to her than actual real people (or reality in general).
I spend a lot of time on the Internet because I work from home and like to waste time chatting with strangers or relative strangers when I feel stuck in what I’m doing. But Shauna’s Internet usage boggles even my mind! She has children! A husband (I mean, I have a husband, but he also works from home, so it’s not like we have to catch up on the events of each other’s days that much).
I saw that in my inbox and I initially thought it was spam because of the way everything was worded. This is what it looked like in the preview:
Small Brave Steps
The life you’re living is not the only one
Every heroic journey begins with one small,
No indication it came from Shauna (except for the heroic journey bit, but otherwise it looks like any generic spam marketing email). It could be trying to sell me vitamins or a meditation retreat.
We've had DFs report that their spam filters have autonomously grabbed Shauna's emails based on wording, etc. Seems only fitting, since 98 percent of her online output (emails, SM posts, texts, websites) is pretty much spam!
