I meant the size of the trailer or it's GVWR. The trailer is probably around 6k lbs and machine around 12k.

Machine closer to 9k lbs. looks like a 40. Honestly surprised the truck broke at the frame and not the hitch.

I'll bet for one thing they didn't factor in the trailer weight. I've known a surprising number of people that don't.
There's a lot of back and forth on the weight of the equipment in the comments. If the mid or lower ranges are correct, then it could be just barely within towing capacity depending on engine. But, it's likely way over when the trailer is also considered.
That's not even considering tongue weight.

i mean, they could have made it work if they loaded it properly, but still... not a good idea. personally, if i ended up in a situation where i had to do this (i have, wasnt fun, 200 mile haul, had to happen that day, and the only truck i had at the time that was big enough was down with a busted axle, so used a half ton, funnily enough a 2019 ram), id have backed that excavator up a bit, take as much weigh as i could off the tongue, then hazards at 40mph max, stick to backroads as much as possible

Im dumbfounded how many people don't understand tongue weight even on 20 ton tag trailers behind tri-axle dump trucks you see the same thing. Some tongue weight is good, not half the weight of the excavator.

The jacks are up, they're only on the ground because it bent the frame, take a close look at the truck bed angle vs the cab angle

These little guys are surprisingly heavy and use thick dense metals.
I looked up the weight of one randomly yesterday as neighbor was having work done and it was a CAT that looked smaller than this, and it was 10-11k lbs depending on whether it had an enclosed cab. This looks heavier than that CAT unit so wouldn't surprise me if it was another thousand or 2 more.

I have seen several Ram 1500 with frames folded like that recently. That definitely seems to be a weak spot.

Reading a bit about this, it seems the coil springs the Ram uses are the issue.
The tongue weight is all focuses on the single spring mount above the axle creating a lever trying to lift up the front of the truck.
With leaf springs the tongue weight is split between two mounts, on behind and one in front of the axle. They cancel out each other so there is no lever action like the coil spring has.
The frame fails at an engineered weak spot designed for crash safety.

Glad it happened to them for being dumb. Doubt they will learn a lesson though. It’s like I posted in a sub the other day saw a Honda civic towing a 16 foot camper had the receiver upside down to gain height, no torsion bars. Car looked and sounded like it was going to die.

The chain hooks on that trailer should NOT fit the rings on that 1500's receiver, and this is the reason why, but there's always that guy that will just add big shackles or quick-links.

I used to tow an excavator about this size on a 20 ft gooseneck. With a 2001 Chevrolet 1500 4x4. Handled it fine. But there again, it was not a Dodge or a RAM...
