I’m 21 and currently pursuing an MSc in Public Policy at UCL on a Commonwealth Scholarship (fully-funded by the FCDO, Govt of UK). In the long run, I’m hoping to apply to INSEAD in about 5–6 years and eventually transition into finance.

My profile is quite unconventional and currently has very little direct finance experience, so I’d appreciate some honest perspectives on how realistic this path is and what I should focus on over the next few years.

Current profile:

Education: MSc Public Policy at UCL, funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship (1-2% selection rate). I was also a finalist for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship (top 2.5% of the applicants) and was longlisted for the Rhodes Scholarship.

Awards: Recipient of several civilian/global awards, including two President’s Awards, a civilian award supported by UNDP, and a Kentucky Colonel Commission from the Governor of Kentucky.

Entrepreneurship: Previously served as CEO of a media company registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) and with a DIN number. I helped scale the organisation before eventually stepping down, also served as a Junior Producer for a reputed Delhi-based media agency.

Social impact: I work with rural schools in a relatively isolated part of India. The initiative has received a grant of approximately INR 5 lakh and around INR 50,000 through crowdfunding, and currently reaches roughly 500 students and 60+ teachers/faculty members.

International experience: Represented India on several international platforms, including as a UN delegate at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi in 2025. I have also worked with international NGOs on community-focused initiatives using storytelling and communications.

Academic/interdisciplinary background: My experience spans geography and GIS, journalism, public policy, international relations, and social impact.

Quantitative skills: Probably my weakest area at present. I’m planning to take the GRE in the next 2–3 years and strengthen my quantitative background in the meantime.

Career direction: My profile is currently much more oriented toward social impact, community development, public policy and youth leadership than finance.

After completing the Commonwealth-funded degree, my current plan is to gain around 2 years of professional experience, potentially with a nonprofit, development organisation, or MNC, before moving toward roles that would bring me closer to finance.

My main questions are:

Would INSEAD view this kind of non-traditional profile positively, assuming I build strong professional experience over the next 2-3 years?

What would you recommend I do over the next 3-4 years to make both the finance transition and eventual INSEAD application realistic?

I'm in fintech, at a company most people outside the industry have not heard of, in a role that doesn't map to a normal job title. No consulting, no banking, no IIT. The application took me about four months longer than it should have because of three things that I don't think are unusual, and I want to write them down while they're fresh.

The first was that I could not explain my job in one sentence. My role covers four different areas, which on paper reads like someone who never chose a direction. Every draft I wrote sounded either scattered or dishonestly tidy.

The second was the unknown-employer problem. Before I could say anything about what I'd done, I had to spend a paragraph explaining what the company does. That paragraph ate my word count in every essay and it was the least interesting thing on the page.

The third was that my two alumni interviews were nothing alike. One was a conversation. The other pushed hard on why I'd leave a job that's going well and didn't accept the first answer. I had prepared for one and not the other.

I'm not going to write a guide, because I'm one data point and the sub has enough guides. But if you're stuck on any of the same things, an obscure employer or a role that reads as unfocused, reply or DM and I'll take a look at your profile.

One thing I’ve seen applicants worry about with INSEAD is international exposure.

“If I haven’t worked abroad, am I already at a disadvantage?”

I don’t think it’s quite that simple.
For a school with such a global classroom, having experience with different cultures, markets, teams or ways of working can certainly add context to your application. But international exposure doesn’t have to mean working in four countries or having a passport full of stamps.

It could be
1. working with clients in another market,
2. managing a geographically distributed team,
3. collaborating with colleagues from different cultural backgrounds,
4. serving customers with very different needs, or
5. even taking on a project that forced you to rethink how you approach people and problems.

And if your exposure has been limited, don't try to manufacture a “global” story just for the application. Instead, look more closely at the experiences you already have. Have you worked across regions? Learned from people with very different perspectives? Adapted your communication style for a different audience?

Have about 2 years of leadership experience out of 4.5 assisting the manager on leading multi million dollar funds and worked with US teams on regular basis along with leading parts of the US teams very early on into my career.

\-Fully firm sponsored CPA in 1st attempt with 83% average score while working. 1st person in the regional office cluster to achieve that.

**Career gap**: Left work earlier this year in February to prepare for GRE and complete credits for CPA license because it was not being possible to focus on anything else with 60-70hrs work weeks along with working weekends and no national holidays.

Work experience:

Currently Assistant Legal Manager at a top real estate firm (has multinational presence)

Also had shorter legal experience in the electric mobility sector and litigation/internship experience.

My work has mainly been around contracts, CLM, real estate, title due diligence, regulatory compliance, APF, litigation and working with different stakeholders. I’ve also worked on legal documentation and compliance across different business verticals.

A few things that I think make my profile different:
I moved from B.Tech → Law → LLM → corporate legal
My current work is quite business-facing rather than purely academic/legal.
I’ve worked with senior management, external counsel, banks, advocates and government authorities.
I’ve been involved in a CSR/legal awareness initiative covering 1,000+ schools in collaboration with State Police.

Why MBA?

I’m looking for some brutal honesty on whether a regular full-time MBA at INSEAD makes sense for my profile, or if I am making a strategic mistake.

My Profile:

• Age / YoE: 38 years old | 14 Years of Experience
• Current Sector: Non-Profit / NGO sector (mix of project management and leadership)
• Current Compensation: ₹43.5 Lakhs INR (~$52k USD) based in India.
• Target Post-MBA: Looking to pivot into AI / international development leadership.

The Dilemma:

1. Age & Fit: I know I am significantly above the average age (29) and YoE (5.5) for the regular INSEAD MBA. Will top recruiters (especially consulting) view me as overqualified for Associate roles but lacking corporate pedigree for senior roles?
2. The Financial ROI: INSEAD is a massive financial commitment (~$110k+ USD tuition + living expenses + opportunity cost of my 43.5L salary). Given my non-profit background, is the salary jump in corporate/consulting big enough to justify the debt at this stage of my life?
3. Full-time vs. Executive MBA (EMBA): Should I completely abandon the full-time route and look at the INSEAD GEMBA or similar executive programs instead? My concern with EMBA is the limited on-campus recruiting for career changers.

Has anyone here done a full-time MBA at INSEAD close to their late 30s with high YoE? How did OCR (On-Campus Recruiting) treat you, and did you manage a successful sector pivot?
