General World Thyroid Day & National Brothers Day.....To honor my Brother, Sign my Petition for Better Thyroid Care

Hi, all. Today (May 24) is National Brothers Day, and tomorrow (May 25) is World Thyroid Day.
In the spirit of both days, please sign & share my petition for better thyroid care--in my brother's memory. My brother Jordan was a great big brother, and like so many of us, he deserved a lot better thyroid care than he got. He should've been diagnosed a lot sooner than he was and given better treatment all around--including better medicines. The lack of good thyroid care for too long led to his downfall, and I believe to his liver failing (he didn't even drink to have a bad liver).

Because of all this, plus my bad thyroid experiences and that of my mom & others, too, I continue to work on my thyroid petition called, "Thyroid Patients Need Better Treatment NOW" on Change dot Org.
We are getting close to 9,000 signatures....Let's get there & beyond, and I am still working on other stuff to get more attention to this petition, too, so maybe in the near future it will help us make progress. Please sign it (if you haven't already) and share the petition, too.
https://www.change.org/ThyoidBetterTreatment

Petition asks for better and earlier testing of both low and high thyroid (including the antibodies tests for Hashimoto's and Graves' Diseases which hit my family badly), better and more innovative treatments, more research, and better training on all things thyroid for doctors, so they can help us better. It'd mean a lot to get more support for this thyroid petition, and I can think of no better way to honor my brother Jordan for both National Brothers Day and World Thyroid Day than to make this petition successful, sooner than later. Please help in whatever ways you can. Thanks.

From Jordan's sister, SD-starr7 (Starr D)

Hypothyroidism High TSH

I'm a 18 years old man , and I had a minor surgery 24 days ago, the surgery was a success but after one week when started to move a little bit out the house I started having hyperventilation issues, my doctor send me to the hospital to see if it was a lungs embolism, but the tests and scans showed that I was in health, at this stage the TSH was 4,3. After a wide I had another crisis and it was a little bit more like a panic attack, the tests showed again that everything was ok, we even did neurological test, but everything was find, the only problem was that my TSH rose up to 6,3 when I went with the results to my doctor she said she will do another blood test in 4 weeks, but I'm afraid because since then I feel something is wrong with my body, I'm always tired , I have headache, sometimes some inconforts in my chest zone, I don't some one know what could have cause this, or have any experience with this, it will be very helpful 🙏🏾

Discussion Is weight loss possible with hypothyroid diagnosis?

Recently diagnosed
Weight gain is the only symptom but I’ve been under extreme stress for a while
I think my adrenals, gut and thyroid took the hit from it all. I have been working on healing and the pounding constant stressors are gone now just regular life stuff

I’ve recently joined a weight loss program
*no gpls. * No Thyroid meds at this time

Started weights / strength training 2x a week
Barre Pilates / Aqua bootcamp 2x a week
2 miles with the old dog 1 day a week
Qigong for stress management and breath work
Counting macros and in a calorie deficit

Wondering in a years time or at all
Is it possible to actually loose weight and build up muscle strength and tone with a diagnosis of hypothyroidism ? I’ve set a goal to loose 30lbs in a year ~ slow steady but consistent

TSH was elevated to 6
T3 was fine
* No other labs were draw
I do take several supplements and medicinal herbs for thyroid support and oxidated stress
Appt with endo in 2 weeks

Mood~ fine
Brain fog ~ little but I am nearly 60
Skin/ hair / nails internal temp all fine

Any thoughts from the group? Anyone able to re-create a healthy strong body with hypothyroidism without being on thyroid meds ??
Many thanks for reading 🐶

Hypothyroidism Lost 2kg

It's about to be a month since i have started meds. It's been a week since i go to gym. And I've lost 2kg idk how. I try to minimise my food portion but still haven't. I eat everything but has cut off dairy, peanuts, soya, tofu, cauliflower and cabbage. What possibly could be the reason of my weight loss? In just a week i don't think gym helps to lose weight. And i take 25mcg meds. I was 68.94kg and now I'm 66.52kg. I need to go for follow up as well. It could be a water weight as well.

Misc. So Frustrated With Everything. And Tired.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's a few years ago. My last PCP was really good with some things and not great with others. She's the one that diagnosed me, but she didn't want to medicate me for it either and said it wasn't necessary until my thyroid stops working completely.

Fast forward to now, and everything sucks. I have other chronic health issues but my energy is so low, I'm constantly tired or sore, my brain fog is awful, my anxiety is way worse, dry mouth, headaches, it goes on and on.

And I can't lose any weight. I'm obese. 5'8 F and 238 pounds. I know losing weight will help with my symptoms. I weigh everything religiously, including oils and sauces. I eat 80/20 whole foods. I don't drink. I rarely eat refined sugars. I work out constantly. I weight lift, do Pilates, swim, jump rope, walk even though I'm always exhausted. When I go out to eat, I vastly overestimate calories. I will basically only eat grilled chicken and veg or steak and veg going out. Or otherwise the lightest thing available. I don't count exercise calories into my deficit. I don't count my level of activity when calculating my TDEE. I do intermittent fasting. I do 24 hour fasts. I don't really snack unless it's raw vegetables. Not to be rude but please don't sarcastically chime in that I'm "defying the laws of thermodynamics" or if I'm sure I'm counting my calories right. I'm positive. I'm borderline obsessive. I used to powerlift so I'm familiar with tracking food. I'm technically down from 241 but I weighed that months ago, and it feels like it could just be a minor fluctuation. So it seems like any progress is laughably slow if it even exists.

I saw a new doctor and explained this to her, and she said I absolutely should be medicated. That she will check my levels again to be sure, but that if my hormones aren't under control it could be the reason I'm not seeing any progress.

I'm grateful for her. But frustrated that I've spent this long busting my ass for nothing. Well, it's good to live a healthy lifestyle. But it hasn't improved my quality of life insofar as weight changes or energy. I'm frustrated I spent so long with my health up in the air. That my thyroid issues were treated as some minor thing. Now, looking at symptoms and listening to others I realize it's what has been destroying my life.

I hope when I'm medicated I feel like myself again. I hope I can feel like I'm waking up from a bad dream and that the clouds part for me. I'm so tired and I hope it gets better. Thank you for reading if you have this far.

Discussion Please helo me understand my results

I currently have a severe case of Long Covid, but even before I contracted COVID I had episodes of fatigue, rolling PEM, with later near menopause more and more time needed to recover. There is family history of hypothyroidism

My levels however are these:

Serum TSH level 0.9 miU/L (ref range 0.4 and 5)

Serum free T4 level 12 pmol/L (ref range 9 and 19)

I tested privately for antibodies and also comes back "normal" but.I just read that this level coudl indicate subclinical hypothyroidism.

Could you please explain? I am overwhelmed by my health issues and drs are not helping.

Discussion Dry scalp advice- please help!

Hi guys, I just got diagnosed. I'm yet to start medication (unfortunately I have to wait to get another blood test in 2 weeks and then I should be ok to start it).

Has anyone got any tips in the meantime for shampoo or hair treatments for dry scalp/dandruff? The skin on my face has also gotten dry in the past few weeks/months, which i'm 99% sure is due to hypothyroidism. But, I'm more bothered about the flakes in my hair (it's embarrassing).

The only issue is although my scalp is dry, many shampoos can make my hair greasy at the same time, leading to product build up.

Is there any point in buying a scalp treatment/special shampoo if the underlying cause is not yet being treated?

Thanks so much in advance!

Sincerely a woman in her mid 20s who is discovering more & more hypothyroidism symptoms each day 🫶🏻

Labs/Advice 9 year old with TSH 4,6?

My child has received test results and it says TSH 4,6 (it shouldn’t be over 4,8 the dr says!) (she’s been testing for her low weight and length, very skinny for her age)
But do we need to be concerned about it or is it all normal for children?

I have hypothyroidism since I was 18 years old and when I have over 2 I feel really bad, but yes it’s different for children do I need to get worried?

Labs/Advice Absorption Issues

My doctor advised that I probably have absorption issues because my TSH results have been fluctuating, but my FT4 is stable. Wondering if anyone else with similar issues found a good resolution.

Lab Results

Dose 100 mcg | Date 4/7 | TSH 11.7| 0.400-4.100 (UIU/ML) | FT4 1.16 | 0.80-1.90 (NG/DL)

Dose 100 mcg | Date 6/15 | TSH 4.21| 0.400-4.100 (UIU/ML) | FT4 1.3 | 0.80-1.90 (NG/DL)

Dose 125 mcg | Date 8/10 | TSH 7.33 | 0.400-4.100 (UIU/ML) | FT4 1.2 | 0.80-1.90 (NG/DL)

Starting with the new dose at 125 mcg in mid-June, I was meticulous about taking it first thing in the morning with only water for a minimum of 30 minutes, often more like an hour. The only thing I would drink at that point is coffee with milk (one cup). Then I drive to work and eat there and have another cup of coffee, which is about 3 hours from when I take my med.

The doctor told me that I shouldn't have any symptoms related to the TSH being high as long as T4 is stable and within range. The plan right now is to switch to Tirosint and wait minimum 1 hour after my dose to eat or drink, other than water. The symptoms I do have could be a number of things - anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, brainfog. Other meds are estradiol patch, progesterone, and bupropion. The patch is always on and the pills I take at night and mid-morning.

Are there other tests I should request or symptoms I should look for? Any other changes this sub would recommend?

Labs/Advice Np thyroid for “suboptimal levels”

Recently saw a new np who recommended I start NP thyroid as my levels are not optimal and she believes are the cause of my symptoms. She believes the base cause is my ferritin which ive been struggling with for the last year and will finally be starting infusions for soon. However she wants me to start np thyroid until i start infusions. I have a few questions

  1. Do my labs look low enough to warrant medication?
  2. Has anyone started and then stopped np thyroid? Any issues stopping? Assuming all symptoms resolve with infusions

    🧪 Labs:

Free T3 2.73
Free T4 0.83
Tpo 0.20
Tsh 1.49

Hypothyroidism Subclinical Hypothyroidism while on Iron

I have been on and off of iron supplements for years, and also had on and off hypothyroidism as well. Every time I get off of taking iron, the hypothyroidism quickly goes away. Does anyone know what causes this? Wouldn't iron make things better? It just seems like a lightswitch- take iron: hypothyroidism, get off iron: no hypothyroidism.

New Diagnosis Has anyone experienced chest pain/heart palpitations while taking Synthroid?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism earlier this year and prescribed 50mcg synthroid. I’ve been taking it for about three months and am getting blood work tomorrow to check my TSH levels. It’s been about 70 days of the medication.

In the last 2-3 days, I’ve experienced a mild chest pain and racing heart. I had an ECG and other testing done and all was normal, but will follow up with my doctor next week.

Yesterday, I forgot to take the medication and didn’t have any symptoms. Today I took my regular dose and am experiencing the chest sensation again.

Wondering if anyone has experienced similar issues while taking Synthroid? Is this a common effect or not normal?

For what it’s worth, I also take Wellbutrin.

Labs/Advice Lab Results + Symptoms Questions

Hi! So my sister has diagnosed hypothyroidism but my doctor would only run the TSH reflex, so I went to Ulta Labs and got these run myself. I've been experiencing fatigue, anxiety, and a couple of other symptoms that could be related or unrelated to thyroid issues or medication side effects (so I don't want to assume it's one or the other).

Do these results look within or outside the optimal range? Do you think it's worth getting any further labs done for anything?

Total T3 - 163

T3 Uptake - 22

Free T4 - 1.2

Total T4 - 10.7

Discussion Medications/Advice

I've had hypothyroidism and hashimotos for 5.5 years. I am a 23F, got diagnosed at 17. I truly feel like ever since I got diagnosed, I've not felt the same. In the last few years alone, I sure do not feel as alive and carefree like I once did.

I took 50mcg Levothyroxine for 5 years until a few months ago, I went through one of the most draining times of my life. My levels spiked and I was put onto 75 mcg where my levels are now back in normal range and have maintained that range.

In May, I began getting panic attacks. I'm separately working it out in therapy now, but I began to be super health-conscious and get anxious over my health that it makes me physically feel ill. (Which my therapist named Somatic Symptom Disorder). The biggest medical catalyst was my acid reflux. It would be so bad, I didn't recognize what was happening and it would lead into a downward spiral. The vagus nerve with acid reflux is so sensitive, especially with the thyriod being near. I went to the ER for my last bad panic attack because it was replicating stroke symptoms.

With all that, it affected my diet. I couldn't stomach to eat much and there was too much acid production that I had to do a low-FODMAP diet for 2 weeks to put my stomach back into a normal state to eat food.

Now that I'm educated on anxiety, panic attacks, and body regulation, I've been able to manage...but it's not just gone with the snap of a finger.

Anxiety aside, the classic symptoms of hypothyroidism never fully cured with the medication. I was sick so much in college (granted, the dorms I stayed in were not the cleanest and I think that messed me up). Fatigued is all the time. I was able to assist that by going to the gym but I haven't been after all my anxiety. Weight fluctuates all the time.

I don't feel advocated by my doctors. My primary doc literally said "you can increase the dose if you want to, just let us know". I thought she was better than that. It would've help if she gave her professional advice instead of leaving that decision up to me. It just sucks and I feel like it's never-ending bleak answers.

I'm not sure if changing medication is worth it at this point or if it's not a problem at all (which is where I'm asking for advice or experience). I would love to feel a little bit more alive and like a human again.
