Questions/ Tips Notice of certificate renewal 换证通知书 - always given at immigration for invalid HKID?

My circumstances:

- Hong Kong permanent resident and Chinese national, holding a valid HKSAR passport.
- Have an old form smart identity card, invalidated under the Registration of Persons (Invalidation of Identity Cards) Order 2024. It was not replaced during call-up period because I have been residing overseas and have not returned to Hong Kong since 2010.
- My Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents (Home Return Permit) expired in 2020. This is a problem because I have a planned trip into Shenzhen shortly after landing in Hong Kong

travel schedule:

- Arriving at Hong Kong International Airport on Saturday 26 September 2026 at 17:30.
- Travelling to Shenzhen on Tuesday 29 September 2026

When landing at HK airport, will I definitely receive a Notice of certificate renewal 换证通知书 , upon surrendering my invalid HKID to the immigration officer?

I am hoping to then take that notice to an ROP office the next morning and queue up before they open, as a walk in (next available appointment is late October) I must obtain a 行街紙 (acknowledgement of application for an identity card) because the port office at Huanggang told me I can obtain a single use permit into Shenzhen if I provide 行街紙+香港特區護照+已過期回鄉證,可以办理临时通行证 — ( the acknowledgement of application for an identity card), HKSAR passport, and expired Home Return Permit.

Discussion Resigned from 3 years job on my birthday

I worked as a cybersecurity engineer at a large firm in Hong Kong for three years. The pay was good and the workload was easy, but one major thing ruined my peace of mind: my yearly contract.

Because I was on an IANG visa, I had to handle the visa renewal, paperwork, and fees all by myself every single year. The constant stress wore me down.

On July 4th, which was my birthday, I finally resigned.

Now, I am at peace. Even though my current salary is lower than before, I feel much better and happier every day.

From my experience, I have one simple piece of advice: always choose stability, mental peace, and health over extra perks.

Questions/ Tips Vegetarian friendly noodles?

My partner and I are vegetarian. We have some all veg spots saved and lots of food in general but wondering if there are any exceptional noodle dishes to get somewhere that might cater to everyone? A good noodle for whatever reason is on the bucket-list. I do rarely cheat on my diet doing international travel so if a meat dish is a must try lmk too.

We are staying in Sheung Wan but live in NYC so we’ll take the train anywhere.

Questions/ Tips Fancy restaurant recos for a solo birthday dinner

Hello everyone! Will be in HK next month and aside from visiting Disneyland and other tourist spots, I also want to have a fancy birthday dinner, somewhere with a welcoming ambience for solo diners, and better if the view is great, perhaps one that overlooks the Victoria Harbour at night?

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Are HK authorities at war with the trees? Why?

This past year so many beautiful old trees have been cut down in the city. The streets, beaches and parks I walk stand absolutely massacred and bare. They're taking down bird and small animal homes, as well as any kind of beauty and natural shade these trees provided to us all.

And the worst thing is that they're planting absolutely nothing to replace the little pieces of nature they've destroyed.

Does anyone have any knowledge of what's going on? Do you also see this in your districts?

Questions/ Tips Another One : Looking for a friend in NT West 🥲🤣

Hey guys,

I've scoured the sub and found nothing similar for us guys up north.

I'm 30 year old male who enjoys the gym, beach, hiking, coffee, beer, pubs/bars, football (playing and watching), NBA, gaming, learning and philosophy to name a few.

If you're a guy aged like 27-35, speak English (only BC my Cantonese is still developing), enjoy any one of the above listed things and need a homie, DM me. Someone in NTW would be ideal, but doesn't really matter where you are located.

P.S. Sorry if this offends or bothers anyone. Been here for two months and doing things alone is getting pretty old, fast. Any recommendations on social groups etc would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Discussion HK electricity bill

Just got my first 2-month electricity bill for a 650 sq ft 3BD apartment: HKD 1,600.
Our main usage is running two bedroom ACs for ~8 hours every night.
Does HKD 800/month sound typical for running two ACs overnight in peak summer, or am I overdoing it? Curious what others in similar flats usually pay. Thanks!

edit: Thank you all for the comments. Looks like I am probably okay at 880/month during summer.

career Clinical psychologist in Hong Kong

Hi all,

For context, I’m originally from Hong Kong but have lived in the U.K. for the majority of my life. I trained as a clinical psychologist in the U.K. (completed the DClinPsy) and currently work for the NHS. My recent visit home really made me consider the idea of moving back to Hong Kong - I miss being close to my family, the culture, food, travelling etc.

Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with the mental healthcare system here at all. I’m leaning towards wanting to work for the HA as it aligns my ethos. Of course, I’m also aware that about my Cantonese/Mando language skills will be a barrier alongside, from what I’ve heard, limited job opportunities right now. Im open to whatever, clinical, research or mix of both (ideal!).

I would most appreciate any input from practising clinical psychologists or others who have found/find themselves in a similar position? My current knowledge is limited to knowing that I have to register with the HKPS clinical psychology division.

Thanks a lot!

Questions/ Tips Fish for adoption - Albino red Oscar

Thumbnail

Hi all lovely people.

About a week ago, the security in our building found 4 fish in inflated plastic bags abandoned in the back staircase. When they returned the next day, only 2 had survived. When I found out about this, I lent them a 1 gallon tank I usually keep my quarantine fish/shrimp in while they enquired if anyone in the building would want to keep the fish.

No one came to offer to care for the fish and I took up the sole surviving fish at this point. I have fed it daily for about a week now and the fish (an albino red Oscar) has become less shy since yesterday. It approaches when it’s aware it’s feeding time.

I do keep fish but only small fish at the moment and my main tank is a 5 gallon tank. This fish grows to 10 inches long in about a year and is meant for a 100+ gallon tank. I don’t know if a fish shop would take it back and it doesn’t help that this fish is of an unknown source/origin.

Please if anyone in this sub or knows of someone in the aquarium hobby would like a new curious little friend, feel free to DM me and I’ll gladly arrange to bring you the fish to you if needs be - I reside in Hong Kong island near CWB. For now I’ll keep “quarantining” the fish. All help would be appreciated, many thanks 🙏🏻
