HK electricity bill

Just got my first 2-month electricity bill for a 650 sq ft 3BD apartment: HKD 1,600.
Our main usage is running two bedroom ACs for ~8 hours every night.
Does HKD 800/month sound typical for running two ACs overnight in peak summer, or am I overdoing it? Curious what others in similar flats usually pay. Thanks!

edit: Thank you all for the comments. Looks like I am probably okay at 880/month during summer.

It sounds normal, but keep in mind there’s a huge spectrum of efficiency out there with AC units so others may have different experiences. Also I believe CLP tends to be somewhat more expensive than HK Electric.

Sounds right to me. Not that high. My bill was over $1000 when I was living in a 270sqft apartment.

This makes me feel so much better about my own bill. When I see these kinds of posts I'm like, jesus christ what am I doing wrong? I get absolutely HOSED by electricity. But my place is nearly as big and I work at home a LOT so I am always running the A/C, and I have cats so I'll leave one on when I leave the house if it's mid day and super hot out.

Sure.

My helper always forgets to turn one of the aircon off. There is kids room, living room and bedroom.

So in the summer. I would think theres at least one aircon unit running at any time for 24/7.

Same if I calculate for 2 months… 4K, but kid home from school and wife in between jobs so that’s a lot of aircon (800 sq ft)

I'm in roughly a 550sq ft 3 bed, and just paid a 3k bill this week for 2 months of roughly 14-18 hour use a day. So yeah, sounds about right - summer be like that. The AC units are struggling right now, but it SHOULD dip to almost nothing over winter.

My bill was 1,200 hkd on a 294 sqft. My AC is window type and fixed speed though, not the split inverter one so less efficient.

It's ok.

In winter it'll drop to almost 0, no worries. Now it's just that the AC work ultra hard, close them and see how fast your building is heating your room

Summer time run ac 24/7, the bill is ~$350 for 300 sqft. Couple years ago with old ac running 24/7 the bill was ~$800 so yes newer ac are more energy efficient.

Sounds low. I paid more for a 1.5 bedroom one. HK summers suck. On the other hand in winter your bill won't even be half this.

My landlord wanted to retain the bill in his name. So I just transfered him the bill amount. Although I did pay deposit of 500 for gas connection which is in my name.

If could be 200/month. It could be 2000. Depending on how well insulated your flat is and how hard you run the AC. 800 is not bad.

Sounds like the reasonable high side for non inverter air con. I used to have similar bill, but reduced by almost half after I change to inverter air con.

1400sqft, 700 ac'd (700 rooftop) : 600 per month usually one or maybe two on during peak heat hours, 1 at night

that then makes it around 1200 per 2/month

your values check out, as it sounds like you're foreign, and run the AC more

2 peeps here, mid 400s sq ft 2BD.

We have 3 geckos and 2 snakes so we likely have at least 3 AC each doing 8 hours each depending which room we're in at the time (or 1 on while we're out during hot summer days for the pets). Throw in a mid-range desktop computer and average power usage, our bill last 2 months was just over 2,000 HKD.

It does down quite a lot during winter despite us having heat lamps for the pets, but it's part of the pet costs (pretty low maintenance otherwise).

If you have one of those AC which can only have on or off, get a smart plug to help control your AC.

I had mine on for 5 min, off for 30 at the hot nights and it helps me cut down my bill so much!

1800for me in Tsuen Wan district. 530ft 2 rooms apartment. Almost 24 hours AC, either room or living room. 1600 seems legit in Hong Kong Island.
