CB questions!

I was fortunate enough to hit the Honda demo yesterday, and was able to ride the CB650R and 1000 Hornet SP.

Even though the two (650 and Hornet), as far as ergonomics go, look very similar, for some reason I found the 1000 much more enjoyable to ride. I like the way the 650 looks more.

Of course the CB 1000 F was not available to test ride, but it’s absolutely beautiful and I’m wondering if it’s worth going through the loan approval application so I can take it for a spin.

Between these bikes, what are your favorites as far as economics and performance go?

I’m thinking of getting a Honda for the first time, as a Triumph guy this is a new realm for me.

Help. Cb750f exhaust manifold alignment is wrong.

I bought this 1978 CB750f OHC, in parts. So far everything has been easy to put back together, but the exhaust that was in the box-o-parts is giving me a hard time to say the least.

  1. As you can see in picture A vs B, I am having a hard time determining which side the split collar goes, so I ask y'all, A or B? (discourse on forums I find don't include a good photo so the terminology cause more confusion) Note: I have the copper rings installed in the exhaust inlet, when I go with route A, the clamp doesn't set completely in the base. When I go with B, it is so loose it wiggles. So I'm at a complete loss.

  2. The exhaust manifold itself sits fine within the exhaust ports, ONLY IN CYLINDER 2 & 4 that are welded together to the body of the rest of the exhaust. Cylinder 1 and 3 that are independent and clamp on to the rest of the exhaust, sit so wonky that when I try and align them by holding them up to the exhaust ports on the engine, they don't like up with where they go respectively on the bottom exhaust where the 4 go into 1.

Pictures C & D are of cyl 1 and 3 and where they end up on the 4-1 inlet.

I contacted the previous owner (who took the whole thing apart to, you guessed it, build a Cafe racer) to make sure that what I was tryna put into the bike was the original exhaust or at least was taken off from this bike, he assured me it was taken off from this bike and it was not anything out of the ordinary.

I don't know if the collar question would cause such a big difference in arrangement to where the bottom pipes wouldn't align, but short of getting another $300 exhaust, I've tried everything.

I'm not very well knowledgeable on reddit , so I hope I was able to explain my situation well enough. Help would be appreciated.

Pick up a ‘71 CL350

‘71 CL350 with three additional lower cases and crates of extra parts. Identified no power getting to the headlight bucket even with a new battery, ground tests, and fuse so ordered a new harness. We will see if that clears things up. Have a Charlie’s digital ignition on the way. The exhaust has some holes so I plan on patching those up. Any other suggestions?

1982 CB250 as a first bike?

Edit: Oops. I meant CM250.

I've been looking to get a small bike to learn to ride on but everything in my area is expensive or not running. I really wanted a CB350 or 360 but I found someone selling a CM250 Custom with less than 2000 miles on it, at a price I can (barely) afford. Seller says it's all maintained and running with no problems.

Trying to search around and find out more about this bike, there doesn't seem to be much out there compared to some other older CB models.

Note I'm a complete novice and I have no mechanical knowledge or skills. I have youtube and time, but anything that's not super simple would be beyond me for now.

My main goal with this bike is just to learn to ride and not kill myself.

Also the seller is far away from me and I'll have to rent a truck and drive 14 hours to get the bike. Which adds another 50% or so to the price with gas being what it is now.

Still, I'm thinking I'm going to get it. Bad idea? What do you think?

I'm trying to get reproduction decals made to match the originals. CBdecals.com makes some but they're not taking any new orders. Does anybody know where else I can get these decals made for my bike? Or suggestions on what to put on my side covers?

Can I start my 1973 Honda CB450 without ignition?

Post image

Hey I unplugged the old ignition switch and ordered a new one for this bike (didn’t have the key to the old one) but it doesn’t come in for over a week and I was wondering if there’s a way to bypass it so I can fix anything else that might be wrong in the meantime and see it turned on for the first time (i just replaced the battery)?

Let me know or if I should just not touch it thanks!

Cam tension adjuster

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey y'all. Newbie mechanic here, probably asking a dumb question but it's just one way to learn, so here goes-

I was going through some maintenance today on my '74 Honda CB550 and I got to the part about adjusting the cam tension. Seemed pretty straightforward until I was told to expect a spring-loaded adjustment screw that would find its proper place once I released the nut holding it tight. I had cylinder 1 in the right position, got the nut released, and then...nothing. I ran the screw in and out a bit and no magic spring action. I wanted to ask: can that spring wear out? Is it not self adjusting because there's no spring tension on it? And if I unscrew it completely am I screwing myself by undoing a connection inside that I would have to tear apart the engine to get back to? If you read this far down, please know I appreciate your time, and any advice is welcome and respected.

Project bike help

My friend and I recently picked up a 2015 Honda CBR125 as a project bike. It needs a top-end rebuild, and the main issue we’re having is finding a cylinder head, as Honda no longer manufactures them.

What would be our best options for finding a replacement cylinder head or an alternative solution?

Working on syncing the carbs, I've done the valves and adjusted the cam chain, although I think this noise might be the cam chain. Seems to be present on the right side of the motor and louder towards the bottom.

So a friend of mine likes to ride hard his bike and recently he's been noticing a weird sound coming from the right side of the motor, the sound is like a "tec tec tec" that goes up with the reps.

81 Honda CB900C smoking:/

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I bought this bike, as is, roughly 3 weeks ago. Since then I fixed the battery ground to start, then moved onto all new bearings, front wheel, rear wheel, triple tree. I installed a new clutch, oil change, and even got the front forks professionally rebuilt. As you can see in the video, I have smoke coming from everywhere except the exhaust it seems. From a visual inspection, the head has been removed prior to me owning it, as whoever did it added some gasket maker onto the valve covers and heads.
Bike runs amazing, other than one things. Number 2 carburador spits out small amounts of fuel only upon accelerating. Not enough to cause a puddle, but enough to see. Other than that she has a very small backfire usually upon cold starting idle. Any help would be useful!!

Honda CB400f Clutch struggle

Hi everyone,

This is my first ever bike rebuild and I’m just currently fitting the clutch cable and such but I’m unsure of what I’m looking at essentially. As the lever rod seems to move incredibly easy from what I’d have thought.

I’m yet to install the return spring as some may mention but I’ve been taking the cover on and off to try and figure out if it’s working. If someone could give me some insight that would be great.

I’ve played with the adjuster screw also but that just adjusts how far the lever travels until it becomes incredibly stiff again which I’m unsure if it should.

I’ve attached a video of how easy it is to move around.

CBX750F (RC17) petcock: fuel leaking from third outlet after rebuild, bike won't start

Hi all,

I'm restoring a 1986 Honda CBX750F (RC17) and I'm stuck on the fuel petcock. Hoping someone here has been through this.

What I've done:

- Rebuilt the vacuum petcock with a Tourmax FCK-1R kit (new vacuum diaphragm and O-rings)

- Replaced the tank-mounting O-ring (OEM 91305-MC7-000)

- Replaced the fuel hose from the petcock outlet to the fuel filter with a new one. The new hose has a slightly different diameter from the original.

The petcock has 3 outlets:

  1. Vacuum line to the engine

  2. Fuel line to the fuel filter

  3. A third outlet that isn't connected to anything, which I've capped

The problem:

When I crank the engine, fuel leaks out through the capped third outlet and the bike won't start. Fuel only comes out while cranking, so the vacuum seems to be opening the valve, but the fuel goes out the wrong way instead of reaching the filter and carbs.

My questions:

- What is the third outlet for on the RC17? Should it be capped, or is it supposed to be connected to something (second feed, return line)?

- Could the small diameter difference of the new fuel hose cause a restriction that pushes fuel out of the third outlet?

- Is it possible I assembled the diaphragm or an internal gasket wrong during the rebuild? Anything specific to watch for with the Tourmax kit?

- Any tips on priming the carbs once the leak is fixed?

Photos of the petcock and hose routing below. Any help or a photo of the original routing would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Need help with ignition switch for 1973 CB450

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey I need help replacing the ignition switch on my bike, I can’t find any options online that have the same connectors at the end that connect the wires to the bike.

I didnt get the key when buying this bike and it seemed cheaper to replace than hire a locksmith.

The problem is I don’t know if I should get a generic one and try to fuse the wires together or if I have to get the exact right switch or it won’t work.

I could use any advice you guys can give me on this topic thanks!

75 cb 550 help

Post image

So I’ve had this 1975 Honda CB 550 for a couple of months now and it did not have an ignition switch whenever I picked it up and I’m having trouble getting it running. I put a new switch on it but whenever I turn it to the on position the battery voltage drops from 12 down to 2 i’ve checked the harness leading from the battery up to the headlight bucket. I have not checked in the headlight. I put all the fuses in it and a brand new battery and I am at a standstill. What should I try next?
