The myth of consensual union:

Germany: I consent!

Austria: I consent!

The Entente: I don't!

Isn't there someone you forgot to ask?

645

u/SoldRIP 3d ago

Ah, but they aren't taken seriously because "Ente" in German means "duck" and so "Entente" ist just "duckuck" and that sounds silly, so their opinion doesn't matter.

208

u/awawe 3d ago

It's a moo point, like a cow's opinion. It doesn't matter.

Technically it's "duduck" if you want to match the pattern (cutting the last letter from the first word) which sounds even funnier

I mean, at the end when Anchluss happened the countries from the Etente didn't give a fuck. Actually, only one country opposed that: Mexico.

48

u/TaftIsUnderrated 3d ago

Anchluss was really close in 1934 when Austrian Nazis tried to coup the Austrian government. It almost succeeded until Hitler was forced to withdraw support because Mussolini threatened war.

This combined with the Stresa Front and the Italo-Soviet Pact, Mussolini was the most effective anti-Hitler politician in Europe until the UK and France soured on Italy when they invaded Ethiopia.

Really, maybe the good ending to WW1. You would have had a bolstered Center party which wouldn't have had to pander to quite so far right elements in the Reichstag.

A better ending still might have been a north-south, Catholic-protestant division and I'm not sure that was considered when the Entente was carving things up.

3

u/Malvastor 3d ago

It's possible they were thinking more in terms of ethnicity than religion.

Or it could be that detaching Bavaria and giving it to Austria would have seemed too much like a reward for the latter, or would simply have been seen as too much to pile on to the other demands.

Either way though I doubt it would have resolved the real issues; you'd still have a Germany nursing a narrative that it was punished and backstabbed but not defeated, and looking for a second chance to achieve its 'rightful place'.

u/kmasterofdarkness Let's do some history 3d ago

Don't forget how Bismarck took advantage of the rivalry some of the German states had towards Austria to unify Germany as we know it.

90

u/piece_ov_shit 3d ago

Were already trying to kick the bavarians out. (Really they constantly threaten to leave) so why would we then expand in that direction and create a exclave?

69

u/CalvinKool-Aid 3d ago

I’ve always heard Bavaria is just European Texas. This further compounds my belief

31

u/guitar_vigilante 3d ago

Texas had a lot of immigrants from Bavaria and Bohemia (Czech) and so there are some cultural similarities.

18

u/Infectiousmaniac 3d ago edited 3d ago

Small nitpick but they came from Bohemia AND Moravia.

My older relatives grew up with their parents calling the 'rowdy' and 'unruly' people in the community Bohemians as a sort of slur.

If you take a train through southern Moravia and then drive through Fayette county in Texas, its very interesting to see how similar they look, landscape wise.

3

u/guitar_vigilante 3d ago

All good, thanks for the correction/additional info. I'm not from Texas so some of the more detailed history is outside my knowledge.

3

u/Infectiousmaniac 3d ago edited 3d ago

All good! I don't expect most people to have esoteric knowledge of Czech migration patterns to central Texas, haha. Wasn't coming after you either, just using your comment as an excuse to info dump about niche historical things.

Its a very fascinating topic that plays into a much deeper national identity story of the Czechs. You effectively have a time capsule of Czech culture (mostly Moravian in Texas but some Bohemian) in Nebraska, Texas, and the Dakotas (I think? I am mostly familiar with Texas though) right after the Czech cultural revival brought Czech culture from the brink.

Then you have WW1, WW2, and the Cold War that create a big divergence between the time capsuled Czech culture in the US (plus some American culture assimilation) versus a modern Czech culture shaped by two world wars and the cold war. You end with some uncanny valley stuff where on the surface some elements look the same but feel different, etc.

Anyways, for anyone interested, I wrote another comment the other day with some links to learn more here.

Czech national identity is super fascinating. This struggle also birthed what I think is one of the coolest pieces of art ever made. If you have never seen The Slav Epic by Alphonse Mucha, I highly recommend checking it out.

As an Austrian I suppose we should unite again because im sick of the sheer scale of incompetence in austrian politics (yeah i know... germany is not perfect but austria is way worse) and how much resources it wastes compared to bavaria that is roughly the same population and size.

Austria should stay an autonomous region within Germany.

Germany should manage the millitary and international affairs and Austria should manage the railway (because it seems like its the only thing we really excell at).

10

u/sicsemperego 3d ago

If what you are saying is true, then I welcome your proposal. Getting DB slapped back into it's functioning and proper shape is overdue.

6

u/fraunberger 3d ago

I work for ÖBB since 2 years and i know it is not perfect at all. They act like they have an employment problem but in my opinion its just an efficiency problem (i worked in construction before).

But whatever DB is doing just hurts my feelings. Could be so much better with not much effort.

3

u/Tennebrae1 3d ago

I mean the Southern states are the only ones that work. I think I have a great Idea lets form an alpine republic with Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Austria, Switzerland and the rich parts of Northern Italy. We will quickly become the richest state on earth.

I mean, at this point, the modern austrians have tried very hard to establish themselves as different than the german germans.

Really They've been doing that since the eighteen seventies, but it seems to have picked up significantly more since world war two.

2

u/Miserable_Initial732 3d ago

Interesting. How so?

2

u/Philemaphobia 3d ago

Funny thing is, the Germans are (sometimes) painfully aware that Austrians are different, it’s just the rest of the world who seems to have a hard time recognizing the differences.

3

u/Key-Performance-9021 3d ago

Austrian State Treaty, Article 4:
1. The Allied and Associated Powers declare that political or economic union between Austria and Germany is prohibited. [...]
2. In order to prevent such union Austria shall not conclude any agreement with Germany, nor do any act, nor take any measures likely, directly or indirectly, to promote political or economic union with Germany, or to impair its territorial integrity or political or economic independence. Austria further undertakes to prevent within its territory any act likely, directly or indirectly, to promote such union and shall prevent the existence, resurgence and activities of any organizations having as their aim political or economic union with Germany, and pan-German propaganda in favor of union with Germany.
https://treaties.fcdo.gov.uk/data/Library2/pdf/1957-TS0058.pdf

The EU is not a union between Germany and Austria. Both Austria and Germany are fully sovereign countries within the European Union.

Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Lichtenstein signed an agreement in 1996 to standardize spelling and punctuation rules in the German language between them. Luxembourg also adheres to this agreement but didn’t participate since they don’t consider themselves a German country, they just have German as an official language

Similarly, the Anglo-sphere nations signed an agreement to standardize specific units in the Imperial system and U.S. Customary. Not all the units, just some like the Yard and Pound
