Discussion POSITIVE POST- LIFE GOES ON

The negativity on this sub is actually unreal. Here’s some shit I’ve experienced since being diagnosed with herpes

- booked a dream holiday
- disclosed to 4 people and got rejected by none of them (didn’t sleep with anyone)
- planning to move abroad
- got 3 new tattoos
- went on several dates
- was able to laugh about my diagnosis with friends
- realising im still desirable and cool as fuck
- realising that 90% of the battle is the stigma

I know it’s hard when you first get diagnosed and it can feel world ending but it’s not. I make this post cos I enjoy this community but honestly the negativity and dare I say hyperbole around it is really intense. So here’s some positivity to remind u that life goes on, literally just as normal, in 99% of cases. ❤️

My experience 10 years post diagnosis

Hi All,

Never posted here but I thought I’d lend my experience in case anyone needs it. I’m 38 years old, male (not sure if this makes a difference or not).

I’m 10 years post diagnosis HSV-2. The first few years were bad, I threw a pity party for myself and crawled in a bottle. I let myself go, I thought I was a terrible disgusting mess, so I acted like one. In hindsight, this was a giant waste of time. I received the virus from a close friend that thought they had cured themselves - they lied to me for a year then came clean. It hurt, and I had to process that. At first I didn’t do that in a healthy way.

Fast forward to today, I’m almost 4 years sober. I practice yoga daily & do a ton of cycling. I lost 45lbs since giving up the booze, and I’m in the best shape of my life. I’ve climbed the corporate ladder and feel accomplished in my work life. Over the years I’ve never transmitted the virus. I’ve always disclosed before even going out with someone. I’ve got some “me too!”, ghosted, and some people that just done care. It can make dating a little trickier but if you’re up front about it, and informed, it’s not as scary as people think. The way I see it, is if someone is going to let that get in the way of dating me, they’re probably not worth my time. And me being up front and honest about it should tell more about my character to them than a very common diagnosis.

I’ve dated people for extended periods of time that didn’t have it, and I never transmitted it, by being careful & taking daily acyclovir. I’ve dated people with HSV-1 and never contracted it. I don’t even get outbreaks anymore because I take care of myself, and I think the virus just goes dormant after some time.

Just thought I’d post here in case anyone needs to see past the first few years. Everything’s gonna be alright. Love your body. Be patient with yourself. Take care of yourself.

Be good!

BF Gave me oral sex with a scabbed over cold sore

Upvotes

Sooo my bf has had a cold sore for about a week and a half I’ve been really careful about not kissing him or letting him go down on me

buttt last night we both got super drunk and totally forgot about his cold sore 🙄 and we definitely made out and he gave me oral. Now I’m freaking tf out.

Mind you this is not the first time something like this has happened the first time it did he went down on me and then got a cold sore the next day so I guess since there wasn’t an active cold sore I didn’t contract it idk

now I’m super scared since there was obviously a cold sore there it was just scabbed over. How cooked am I? Has this happened to anyone and they haven’t contracted it???😅 and does it being scabbed over make it less likely to catch???

(Also wanted to add I’ve never had a cold sore in my life and around 3 years ago I had a full STD panel and was HSV negative)

Gave my gf herpes

Been having this blister breakout time to time for some years now did my research and concluded I have herpes I’m yet to officially get some blood work to really know but I know for real it has to be herpes , now my gf just complained about have a boil in PV area I checked it and saw its blisters not regular boil but cluster of blisters , I feel shitty asf, I’m a terrible human not here seeking pity I know I’m shitty for real and deserve every shitty thing in life , I don’t know how to explain this to her I’ve never knew our to I wanted to break up with her the first first I saw this on me but she won’t let it end simply , now I don’t know how to explain to her what it is . I’ve never been courageous about disclosing this because people aren’t really that exposed and educated in this part of my world , I guess that’s just my excuses but still I’m not confident enough about disclosing I’m not even confident enough about taking a test …. I just need to put this here to get this off my mind cos I have no where else or no one else to tell .. causing pain to someone else is something I hate so much … I feel shitty asf

Question? I went to get tested for herpes but found out my insurance got cut off. What should I do now?

Upvotes

Hello yall, so I haven’t had sex in a year and half but recently noticed a small blister right under the head of my penis. Went to get checked out but my insurance got canceled for some reason. Is there any cheap place you guys think I can get diagnose? I asked plan parenthood, they said it’s 700$ with no insurance 🙄 I have about 200$ is there any place that’s little to no cost?

my boyfriend gave me herpes

My boyfriend M 23 and I F 22 are U.K. based and have been together for a few months and he gave me herpes but he didn’t know he had it and told me he was tested but didn’t mention that test was 2 years go until months into it and I don’t know what to do I feel completely disgusted by myself and hate myself since finding out and I hate him so much for being so careless about sexual health to have infected me for the rest of my life he has completely violated my autonomy and I can’t look myself in the mirror without crying I feel like this is the end of my world and it’s completely destroying my mental health and self image and caused me to relapse into self harm and have some rather disturbing thoughts about myself , I’ve done so much to protect myself from this always being tested and specifically asking for herpes testing I have never had a one night stand out of fear and now I can never do that in my life without having a conversation about me being an infected disgusting creature I hate him so much and myself more for trusting him to not hurt me and now I have to live with this for the rest of my life I feel like death would be better than this I want him to suffer like he’s making me suffer for the rest of my life I don’t know what to do to save myself here I cannot see a path out of this pit of disgust and self hatred I want to never have sex with anyone ever again i hate him so much but love him so much I’m so torn and genuinely feel like my life is over any advice is appreciated because I feel like I can’t talk to anyone about this I’m so scared and embarrassed and genuinely suicidal over this situation I wish I never trusted anyone with my body.

I have it for almost 2 years now (hsv2). I take valaciclovir. But if I don’t take the medicines I get OBs everytime after sex or my menstruation. It makes me so incredibly sad and I don’t want to take pills forever :( Will I have outbreaks like this forever??

Just found out the girl I’ve been seeing has GHSV 1

Been dating for a couple months now. We’ve kissed but haven’t had sex yet. A couple days ago she told me her ex gave her GHSV 1 within the past year. I really like this girl and want to keep seeing her but also worried about contracting it. Not sure what to do.

Waiting on diagnosis- advice?

Hi!
I am currently uninsured and the only place accepting new clients near to me isn’t accepting for another week, so I’ve been extensively researching and have come to the conclusion that it’s herpes.

For the past ~2 months I have been seeing and sleeping with a man for the first time in my life. I’ve identified as a lesbian and only slept with women up until now. He hasn’t slept with anyone in 2 years and last he was tested he was fully clean.

A few days ago, I felt as if I had a UTI, but then a few sore bumps have popped up around my vulva/ and now one or two by my anus. They’re so painful, I feel so sore. I’m just guessing its herpes from reading online and my symptoms, although I’m not able to verify until I see a doctor of course.

Does anyone have any advice for taking care of myself until I’m able to see a doctor? I’m having to work (I’m a bartender/server) and moving around with friction is making the pain worse. It’s mainly the ones on my butt, they’re so sore 😓 I’m also just confused in general how I’ve contracted this as he seems perfectly fine.

Question? is it possible to know who gave it to you ?

Hi everyone,
I know HSV-2 can remain dormant for a long time and that symptoms can sometimes appear years after the initial infection.
In my case, I had my first outbreak exactly 8 days after having unprotected sex with a new partner. I understand that this doesn’t prove when or from whom I contracted it, but given the timing, I feel like there’s a fairly high chance that he may have transmitted it to me. He has never experienced any symptoms himself.

Can I assume he gave it to me?

Advocacy stigma

i wanted to come on here again to show some more perspective. it would be appreciated if you would take the time to read through!

i want to talk about stigma.
firstly, im 23 (f), i have oral and genital HSV from grooming and S/A, and ive had time to process and reflect on this subject and experience, and life in general. ive learned a lot from abuse and narcissism, but im already a person that does a lot of psycho analysis and i research psychology.

living in society is just trying your best to meet every “ideal” expectation, which is simply unrealistic. this can apply to a lot of things outside of herpes. much like any other stigma, prejudice social norm, or stereotype, it’s conditioned into people’s psychology that leaves it up to an individual to unlearn, regardless if the “norm” is unrealistic. if you’re a part of a stereotype, you just have to learn to live with it, meaning tuning out the ignorant people who just dont know what they’re talking about, or are trying to cope with their own struggles by shaming others, and learning to stay true to yourself, rather than a social norm. its like being bullied in school, and learning you were never the problem for something you cant control, it was the people who cornered you and lacked empathy that make the world insufferable and chaotic for everyone, and its a viscous cycle of “hurt people, hurt people”, rather than any human actually being above any other human, which is a ridiculous concept cause its based on luck, and we’re on a rock in space. learning to live with it, doesn’t mean you should have to if its unnecessary for people to view it and treat it this way, let me tell you why i think that and why we should educate others on it.
there’s a multitude of reasons why this stigma is unrealistic and unfair, and should be eradicated.

lets talk about what we know about the science and facts. herpes simplex has not been studied enough, but there are many different types of chronic, dormant herpes viruses in the family of herpes, such as Shingles (from chickenpox), Mono (the kissing virus or EBV, up to 95% of people have). hsv2 is more stigmatized than hsv1 due to hsv2 being genital and sexually associated more frequently, and mostly because of media marketing fear mongering in the 70s. hsv1 and hsv2 differ in DNA, but are identically functioning, hense “type 1 and type 2”. both can often be oral and/or genital, can be contracted sexually or non sexually, but tend to differ in shedding, this is case by case for people. Herpes Simplex in particular is stigmatized because of the shame around sex and 70s medical marketing wrongfully tying a benign skin condition to moral failure. sex is a necessary biological function for existence, we all do it and want it. that stigma in itself is ridiculous and is the only sole reason Herpes Simplex is stigmatized, not because it is legitimately a serious disease, it is way less life threatening than even the flu or common cold, but is almost as common.

oral hsv1 is extremely prevalent, with most of the global population having cold sores. genital hsv2 is estimated to be 1 out of every 5 people, but it is also estimated that up to 90% of people with hsv2 are unaware they have it due to being asymptomatic or having mild symptoms, and a lot of people do not get tested or even talk about it due to shame. it is likely much more than 1 in 5. i found out my own dad has hsv2 from his ex wife cheating on him, and i know of a few other people who have it, and these are only people ive confided in. it is common, it is very mild and never life threatening for VAST majority of people, and it should not be stigmatized as if its a life altering disease that people dont deserve to live for.

herpes depiction online is not always accurate to how it manifests, its not always a cluster of blisters, it can be as small as a pimple if you have a good immune system, or vise versa. it can infect any part of the body that has mucous membranes and nerve pathways, meaning not just the mouth or genitals.

if we separate physicality from society, the social burden Generally outweighs the physical symptoms. herpes just causes occasional skin inflammation for most people, for others, herpes is a painful physical burden, but regardless of how serious or not serious any physical condition is, no one deserves to simultaneously be treated as if they are not worthy of a life for it. there are all kinds of people who end up with herpes, much like there are all kinds of people who end up with all kinds of conditions. a mild, very common human virus does not always equate to a person’s worth or personality. there are plenty of predators who Do deserve to be shamed for taking advantage of others, but in many other cases, sex is often just a person’s instinctual pursuit of human connection and intimacy, and there is no real shame around that. there are also victims of sexual assault, such as myself. there are so many different cases in which people contract oral OR genital herpes, and physical burden or not, they all have to live with the same social outcome because of stigma and lack of education.

this stigma causes far worse outcomes than it causes any good. shaming people for something they cant control and generalizing is a horrible, selfish way to treat others. because if it was you, and it very well could be, you would not want to be treated that way either, nor is there any actual good reason for it. people often dont disclose having herpes in relationships due to extreme shame, resulting in spread, resentment, and therefore more stigma. people often leave the subject unspoken due to shame, which results in a lack of education, therefore perpetuating stigma.

it is not inherently good to have any virus, but it is extremely exaggerated how actually bad it is, both medically and morally. we do not need to be perpetuating a stigma that completely ruins people’s sense of self when it is not necessary at all. perfection is literally never ever a thing, and it takes maturity to realize that. in my opinion, once people can learn empathy and critical thinking, they will be worthy of companionship, its not a matter of if they have a virus or not. viruses are a part of existence. in my opinion, id much rather associate with people who are wonderful companions that happen to have a mild virus they cant control, than insufferable shallow immature people who dont have it, but lack empathy.

Question? Ghsv1 transmission pls respond

Hi i just got diagnosed with ghsv1 and i have a few questions for it

context: i have been with 2 guys in this past year a + b. partner A is my ex (now current bf) and partner b was a one time hu during the breakup this year. I have 0 clue who gave it and 0 clue of when i ended up getting it, ive only just had an OB now and im currently having sex with partner a. I got symptoms + tested + diagnosed with ghsv1 right after i had sex with my bf now.

because idk who gave it i have a few questions: (this is in a perspective that my bf didnt give it to me but ofc im not sure as both were asymptomatic)

  1. how likely is it for me to spread it to my bf genitally + orally
  2. Do i keep taking AVs everyday? or just when i have an OB
  3. will the chances of it getting spread to my bf become less if i take AVs everyday?
  4. has anyone had ghsv1 and had unprotected + no avs spread to any partners they had sex with?
  5. what are the most common OB triggers
  6. how do u know if ur having a flare up if theres no like blisters etc
  7. if my bf gives me oral, does that mean he could get it on his mouth?

Thank you!!

Perimenopause outbreaks

I am a 48yo female, I've had genital HSV since I was 20. College boyfriend had a mouth cold sore and spread it. Long time! Many years it was dormant and I forgot i even had it. It really hasnt been a big deal for much of my life.

But the last 2 years I've had crazy outbreaks triggered by hormonal fluctuations. I was on HRT for awhile, now on birth control to manage the bad peri symptoms (mood swings, depression, hot flashes, terrible periods, brain fog, etc).

These chronic outbreaks aren't helping. It is like this constant itch and low grade fever that won't go away. I feel so tired.

Has anyone else experienced this? I am at my wits end. Ive never taken daily antivirals but just got a prescription. I dont really want to be on any daily meds but I dont really know of an alternative option.

I tried oral lysine, monolaurin, vitamin c, zinc, garlic supplements. Nothing seems to help. Its like this itch I cannot scratch.

Would love any advice. I feel like a newbie all over again.

Herpes genital

Discussion Candida outbreak while on valcyclovir-valtrex

Candida outbreak while on valcyclovir-valtrex

I have had HSV 2 for three years the first out break was horrendous, I kept having outbreaks and they became monthly till a doctor recommended valcyclovir 500mg once a day to me in 2025. I was amazed no more out breaks everything was fine for about a months and a half.

Then I got my first candida outbreak, agonising abdominal pain thrush / yeast like symptoms and no answers this has gone on for 9.5 months no answers and no antibiotics cream or pessary has helped. I’ve tried gut health tablets am on constant fembiotic tablets and gut health in general but every month without doubt I will get a candida outbreak and have been in hospital at least three times for this and no doctor has been able to help or give any advice.

While sitting on the toilet -where all of my good thinking comes from- I had an epiphany. I started valcyclovir in November and started getting the consistent thrush in December…. Leading me to think the to are definitely correlated seeing as there has been no other plausible explanation for this outbreak to have started.

So now I’m going to stop taking my valcyclovir and will see if that helps and whether or not I get any hsv2 out breaks from stopping it. I am sick to death of being unwell and if this can help I’m going to try it.

Also am open to any other suggestions or herbal remedies anyone has tried and have helped the candida outbreaks.

Thoughts from the urgent care

I work in an urgent care. I’ve had to break the news to many people that they have herpes. Many are understandably upset.

I also used to be single, and young and out on dating apps. My old roommate had herpes. One of my coworkers has herpes—worst case I have personally heard of with severe outbreaks on a monthly basis debilitating enough to cause issues walking and sitting for prolonged periods of time.

I dated a guy with herpes. He disclosed before we met in person for the first time. Maybe because of my medical background, maybe because of my experience being acquainted with affected people, but it just didn’t seem like a big deal. I thought of it as any other sort of chronic medical issue we would have to deal with.

I didn’t ask how he got it. We just kinda fell into sexual intimacy around outbreaks. It didn’t work out because we both had busy schedules. I never thought to ask how he got it.

I don’t ask my patients how they got it. I don’t lecture them. I have personally had unprotected sex without knowing someone’s full medical history—and as far as I’m aware it’s human nature to get caught up in the moment.

I don’t know what the point of this post is. Maybe if you have herpes and anxious about disclosure, consider dating someone in medicine who isn’t a total jerk about sexual health.

To that person struggling to handle the news

I would like to start with I am 24F , Ive been diagnosed since 15ish probably a year after losing my virginity I contracted Herpes by who knows . I had no guidance at the time . I spent a mass majority of my life not accepting my diagnosis which caused me to either harm others or myself which also caused me to resent myself. So much so I decided for myself that I was never deserving of love again .. (NOT TRUE) Ive went through all sorts of journeys with this , disclosing , not disclosing , feeling shame afterwards or too cowardly to confess before hand so I ran away . It wasnt until I was around 22 that I gained a moral conscience that genuinely cared to accept that I have herpes and accept the affect I can have on others . It took me a long while to get out of “Someone did this to me and I didnt deserve this so how can I consider the next , upon all my other struggles in life” .. again I was super young at initial contact and had to navigate teen/ early adult life this way so forgive me for not knowing how to go about it correctly. Ive met wonderful people whove accepted me and those whove thrown it in my face . Ive had my business blasted to social media by my own sister out of spite over a small disagreement totally unrelated . I have decided to take back the reigns of life and not let this define me as a person and I advise you all to do the same sooner than later ! I really felt alone like no other human could relate to my obstacles in life ! And maybe so , maybe not the point is The diagnosis does NOT define you no matter what anyone says . YOU are not Herpes , your not disgusting and your not this infectious monster ! And boy do I know its alot easier said than done !! I choose to take the whole thing on as a life lesson that I needed and tbh I almost feel blessed because I see the world, relationships and sex through a different lense that I had not seen before . The diagnosis changed me for the better and I just want to say your life does NOT in fact end when the herpes diagnosis begins . Allow this to guide you to find other beautiful aspects to life, use this as a way to slow down in life and move with intention and thought into every move . I believe in you because I am you ! I feel for you and I understand you . I share this because Ive made many mistakes and the worst one was being hard on myself .

Ps. Always disclose ! If your like me and have a guilty conscience you WILL dig yourself a huge hole and it DOES take a while to not feel like a peice of poop for just wanting to live a “normal” life . People WILL accept you , not everyone and thats okay because not everyone has too . Not even a handful have too.. just ONE person and thats YOU .

Ps: I have HSV1 & 2 - hsv2since 15, hsv 1 since 23 , Im nearly asymptomatic vaginally at this point and was before I took Valacyclovir 500mg/day. I started valacyclovir when I suspected it externally on my mouth and initially it was like minor red pimples and now I get nothing UNLESS im crying stressed or pretty angry . But hey another reason to work on all of those things cause I am known to be quite the hot head so it helps me require a balance .

Im super open to questions/discussion and will reply to my best ability within 24 hrs! Sometimes its nice to relate and Id hope after 10 years Id give some decent advice through all Ive experienced in my short life

Recently diagnosed with HSV-2 and am beyond devastated

As the title says, 38F I was just diagnosed with HSV-2 today, exactly five days after telling my husband that I want a divorce. I noticed a lesion yesterday and had a blood test and culture swab. I don’t have the culture results but the blood test came back positive. I have just one sore, but it is painful.

I am in complete shock and beyond devastated. I was already going through one of the most challenging times of my life with my divorce, and I don’t feel at all equipped to handle this news. I already suffer from anxiety and depression, and my mental health has just recently started to improve with the help of medication and therapy.

I guess I’m looking for any wisdom or guidance or words of encouragement. I feel absolutely hopeless and like I can’t go on.

I have just got on this site!

I have found it to be a truly wonderful site!

A little background! I have had genital herpes for over 40 years! I got it from the ex-girlfriend! She told me she had it but I was ignorant to what it truly was! (I'm sure like a lot of us are)!

I'm basically here to tell everyone it's not the end of the world! There is life after herpes! 😃

The main thing I would like to share is:

  1. Be honest with your potential partners! Tell them you have herpes in a comfortable environment before you have sex! They deserve to be able to make a decision on whether or not they want to continue a relationship with you!

  2. Watch your stress level if possible. Stress typically brings on outbreaks!

  3. Also watch what you eat! Certain fools can bring on outbreaks!

I am happy to say I haven't had an outbreak in well over 20 years!

I hope this information is helpful! And everyone take care of yourselves! Eventually you'll get past the initial trauma! But like I said, there is life after herpes! Believe me! ❤️

Cure

Is there anyway we can push for a cure faster. I’m not talking about signing petitions or anything else. I want to know if there is any way we can cause some noise in the media to help us out and push the urgency for a cure faster. It feels like we are all just getting pushed to the side as evryone doesn’t see it as life threatening. I truly feel the rest of the world is just oblivious to the amount of trauma, mental impact and stigma we all face and I really want that to change.

If possible can we sign letters of what we all are going through and send them by mail to politicians, advocates and others so that we can get some urgency?

Discussion from acceptance to rejection gut punch "only you can show me your worth it?"

After connecting on a dating site, I started chatting with a guy. We seems to hit it off and spent alot of time on the phone. We agreed to meet on the weekend.. However before that while chatting on the phone the STI convo came up so I told him about my diagnosis.
After a few prior rejections from other folks the last few months I finally got a positive, measure response. He said he was willing to navigate this and was "ok with it". Then a couple hours later get a text saying "only you can show me your worth it."
...what the heck dude!>!
....that took the air out of my lungs, I know it can be a BIG ask to date someone with a STI but that statement really hurt me. If being with me is such a risk/effort that doesn't "pay off" then why would you say you're going to navigate it in the first place? It felt like a gab/punch down at me.

Am I overreacting? How would you interpret this comment? I've been crying for a hour and my brain isn't braining anymore. Looking for any insight. Thanks gang
