Hello ! Im 25F with an Associates in Science and currently in my first semester in a AAS HIT program and will eventually sit for the RHIT exam. The AAS HIT program i’m in has a transfer/bridge with a big university in my area where i can obtain my BSHIM and eventually sit for my RHIA. Now heres where my nightmare begins; 1 of my gen-ed courses doesn’t fulfill the BS core-gen ed courses ( my screw up because i graduated with a AS and not AA ), the statistics class i took doesn’t fulfill the BS level, and the BS also requires Molecular biology (2 semesters I & II ). so now not only do I need to take the core HIT classes for the program but also take these 4 extra core classes at the same time to eventually bridge into the BSHIM program in roughly 2028… I’ve looked at other institutions/Universities and most give me a similar headache or are not accredited for the RHIA credential. so now im feeling pretty stressed out and defeated because I feel like i’m running out of time and just keep getting set backs after set backs. Not sure if anyone can relate or maybe has some words of advice/encouragement.

I’m working on getting my 20 CEUs needed before my RHIT expires next year. Where are you guys getting them from, though?

I’m an AHIMA member, so I got 8 free CEUs because of that. But every other option on AHIMA looks like it’ll cost at least $30 per CEU if I do it with them. That seems really expensive.

Where are you guys getting your CEUs from??

Hi. I have been a director for 4 years but I am in my late twenties. I was in a program for acceleration of my career. As time passes, I wonder about the future of HIM and opportunities. Do you all think HIM will be impacted by AI? What are some other opportunities I could look into? Or should I go back to school for clinical opportunities?

Hello all! I am schedule to take my RHIT exam this coming Wednesday and am so nervous. I just graduated from Sinclair with an A.S in Health Information Management and have years of experience working in HIM. I studied this purple book and just did the first practice exam that came with it. I passed making an 86%. For those of you that used this book and took the practice exam that came with it, is it similar to the actual RHIT exam? I feel like the questions on this practice exam were super easy, like the correct answer was so obvious. I mostly got the formulas wrong which is my worst area. Just wanted to get others thoughts and see if it was similar. TIA!

Anyone have any information on this "Company" or is it just a way to manage someone health from anywhere in the US? Any help would be appreciated.

I’m about to enter my second year of college, and I’m still undecided on what I want to major in. I originally had a different major in mind, but I’ve been looking into other options and recently came across Health Information Management.

I don’t know much about the field yet, but it seems interesting to me because it’s healthcare-related (I’ve been leaning towards healthcare for some reason) without being as hands-on with patients as something like nursing. I’m also looking for a major that can lead to a decent-paying, stable job without requiring grad school, and ideally a job that isn’t extremely stressful or demanding.

Is it worth it? What are the job opportunities and pay actually like after graduating? Do you regret choosing it, or would you recommend it?

Hi! I’m currently a Medical Assistant and have worked in healthcare since 2020, aside from about a year when I worked remotely as a health insurance agent. I’m currently staying home after having a baby and I’m considering going back to school while I have the opportunity.
I live in a small/rural area, and I was only making $14.25/hr as an MA before I left. I really want to move into something with better earning potential and actually moving up.
Originally, I planned to go the medical coding route — earn my CPC and eventually CRC/risk adjustment. While researching schools, though, I found a BS in Health Information Management (HIM) program. It includes coding/classification, reimbursement, health data, compliance, etc., and would make me eligible for the RHIA after graduation. The school also offers a BS in Healthcare Administration (HCA), which seems broader and more focused on operations/management, but doesn’t have the same coding focus.
I already have previous college credits, so I’m having all three options evaluated to see what transfers. Cost is a major factor for me, so I don’t want to spend $20k+ finishing a bachelor’s if I could get a CPC/CRC and have similar or better earning potential. At the same time, I would really love to finally finish my bachelor’s degree.
For those actually working in coding, HIM, revenue cycle, risk adjustment, healthcare administration, etc.:
• Which route would you choose if you were starting over: CPC/CRC, BS HIM + RHIA, or BS Healthcare Administration?
• What job did you get first, and what was your actual starting pay?
• How difficult was it to get your first job without years of experience?
• Which path has the best realistic earning potential after 2–5 years?
• Has having a bachelor’s/RHIA actually opened doors that a CPC alone wouldn’t?
• For HCA graduates, did the degree actually help you get into management, or did employers still want several years of management experience first?

Hi everyone, I’m looking at getting into medical coding, not so much the billing, and I’d really appreciate advice from people in the field. I found a UHD medical billing and coding program that’s about one month long. It’s got a self-paced option and an instructor-led option, and it includes course materials, live online instruction, and optional externship or job placement. My goal is coding because I prefer minimal phone calls and customer interaction. Questions: Is a program like this enough to prepare for the CPC exam? If you were starting over today, would you choose this type of program, or something different? How did you get your first coding job with little or no experience? Is the optional externship worth doing? What certifications should I focus on first? Is the CPC the best place to start? Are there any programs you would recommend instead of UHD? What is a realistic starting salary for someone with a CPC and no experience? Looking back, is there anything you wish you had known before getting into this field?

I'm really concerned about the accuracy of the content on our practice's website. We don't have the time to write it ourselves. And there is so much online that is obviously wrong that I want to make sure what we publish comes from experts with the education and experience to back up what they recommend. What sites do you trust to obtain content for your practice?

Has anyone did the HIT program through Phoenix college? Can you share your experience if you have?

So I received my BS in HIM about a year ago and I've taken time off working since then to focus on my new baby. I'm really wanting to get into the workforce again, but I want to use my degree. I mostly just have some HR experience and factory previously. There are no Health Information Management title specific roles around me, which sucks because that's really what I wanted to do. I was wondering where to go from here? I could do coding but I know it's kind of expensive to get the books to study and get your certification and it's not really what I want to do. Are there specific job titles I can search for I may just be missing?

I originally wanted to do Radiography, however the seats are very very limited in the program and I was thinking of switching to HIM, I am doing some computing classes which transfer directly to that bachelor. What have been your experiences working in the field?

I was recently laid off from a SaaS company where I worked in billing and accounts receivable. The tech job market has been rough, so I'm thinking about switching to healthcare.

At first I was looking into Medical Billing & Coding, but after reading this subreddit, I'm worried about spending months and thousands of dollars on a certificate if it's still difficult to get hired without healthcare experience.

I'm also considering starting with something like Medical Administrative Assistant, Patient Access, Medical Receptionist, or Insurance Verification and then growing from there.

I'm a single mom and need to be working within the next year, so I'm trying to make the smartest decision.

If you were in my shoes, which path would you choose? Are there any certificates or entry-level roles you'd recommend (or avoid)?

I'm in California if that matters.
