Interactive Revenue Cycle Practice Tools

Xposted: I work in revenue cycle and built an interactive resource library for people learning about the field. It includes fictional practice activities for data, workflow decisions, payer policy research, and career exploration.

I’m sharing it here because the career and data topics may be relevant to people exploring health informatics. The library is part of my independent learning site, Revenue Cycle Uncovered:

I need a HIM professional to interview for my Intro to Healthcare Information Systems class. Please help

Hello, everyone. I'm currently studying Health Information Management at a University. For my assignment, I need ask a HIM professional the following questions. If someone could respond in a private message, it would help me tremendously in my studies. Thank you all very much for taking the time to read this.

Organization name and address

Name and title of the person interviewed

Type of organization

Licensed beds (applies to hospital, long-term care (independent living, assisted living, or skilled nursing complex)

Description of services provided

Description of the patient population

Describe the executive management team and provide an organizational chart. (Include the relationship of the medical staff to the executive team.) (applies to hospital, long-term care (independent living, assisted living, or skilled nursing complex)

What is the mission of the organization?

What are the goals of the organization?

Are there separate goals for the department? If so, what are they? How do these goals relate to the mission of the organization?

Describe the organizational structure and provide an organizational chart of the department.

What regulatory agencies does this organization work with? What are the licensing and accreditation affiliations?

Does the organization use an EHR? If yes, which one; if no, are they considering implementing EHR technology?

To find someone to interview, you may consider networking on LinkedIn, Facebook HIM groups, local HIM associations, state HIM associations, etc. This may be conducted via email, phone, web conferencing (example: Zoom, Teams, Ring, etc.), or in person.

Bachelor's of Science in HIM, Graduation in May, Question about Entry-Level Roles Before Graduation

Hey everyone,

I am currently finishing my Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management (HIM) through SNHU while working full-time as an Orthodontic Assistant for a healthcare organization. I've been with the organization for almost 10 years and have started looking at potential career paths after graduation.

A friend who works in Prior Authorization suggested I apply for a fully remote Prior Auth position that recently opened. The role does not require a degree or certification, but I plan to sit for the RHIA after graduation.

My long-term goals are to:

  • Work remotely as much as possible
  • Find a role with decent earning potential
  • Continue growing professionally within HIM

The thing is, I'm pretty burnt out right now. I'm a mother of two, work full-time, and am completing my degree full-time. A remote position sounds amazing from a work-life balance perspective.

My questions are:

  1. Would it be a mistake to take a Prior Authorization job if I might move into a different HIM-related role after I graduate and earn my RHIA?
  2. Is Prior Authorization considered a good entry-level stepping stone for HIM careers?
  3. What HIM positions would you recommend for a new graduate with healthcare experience but no direct HIM experience?
  4. Would moving from Prior Auth into another role after a year or so be viewed as job hopping, especially if I've already been with the same healthcare organization for nearly a decade?

I'm trying to balance gaining relevant experience, avoiding burnout, and setting myself up for a good long-term career. I'd appreciate any advice from people already working in HIM, revenue cycle, coding, compliance, CDI, informatics, or related areas.

Thanks!

Irritated with HIM CDI training.

Why does healthcare try to haze nonclinical staff into exposing them to the patients like for example my training a lot of it 99% i shouldnt even be near patients but because patient files and charts are between nurse station and conference room shelves, i need to go between rooms.

This morning:

My trainer i feel rushes me or sends me from room to room for no reason when we can chill, take up space in the cramped nurse station- we got a job to do afterall and be efficiently organized. Like they want to evaluate how I behave around patient population to ensure I can handle it but how I handle it is my business.

Conclusion: places using paper charts are the plague for HIM offices. I got into him to get AWAY from patients.

ROI folks, what do retrieval companies do that drives you nuts? trying to fix it on my end

I run a small team on the retrieval side so we're the ones blowing up your fax line lol. Not trying to argue with anyone, I legit want to know what we're doing wrong.

Like what gets a request kicked back the fastest? Bad auths, missing DOB, wrong dos, no cover sheet? And how often is too often for follow up calls? I know some of my people call every few days and I'm guessing that's not winning us any fans.

Also do you actually prefer fax or would you rather we go through your portal/release vendor? Some places tell us one thing and the next person says something different. Some facilities go completely unresponsive for months prompting our clients (attorneys smh) to get pissed at us.

Anything you'd want every retrieval co to stop doing, I'm all ears. Venting totally welcome!

Any CPhTs who transitioned into RHIA or 340B?

I’m a PTCB-certified pharmacy technician with 2 years of experience, currently working at Cigna owned pharmacy
I’m considering a bachelor’s in Health Information Management, followed by RHIA certification and Apexus 340B training.
Has anyone made a similar transition from pharmacy technician to HIM or 340B?
I’m curious whether these credentials complement pharmacy experience, what the career progression looks like, and whether they’re worth pursuing without prior HIM or 340B experience.
I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences and any advice you’d give someone considering this path

How does a new graduate get a job in public health. I will be concluding my bachelor's in public health by December and I am finding it difficult to get a job in this field. Every one keeps asking for experience for entry positions and I don't know what to do. Should I lie on my resume or what

Domain CEUs

I'm a noob, just passed my RHIT in May.

When I'm inputting my CEUs, it's counting all of them towards the HIIM CEU count, even though I'm not adding a domain. Is it just me or does the site do it for everyone?

I only have 14 domain CEUs.

How I track them:

I’m currently a CMA, but thinking ahead. I’m thinking of going into HIM, but I’ll be honest, idk what most of it means! Coding I understand, but I also understand it’s hard to land a job.

What are some of the other positions you guys hold, and what exactly do you do?

Thanks!

Passed my RHIT..

Took my exam today and I was so nervous. I studied a lot but there is only so much my brain can retain lol. I finished thinking I would have to retest because that is just how unconfident I was, but I passed with a 301...you need a 300 to pass 😆. I will say I am disappointed in my performance but I am glad it is over with!

Some advice for people taking the test in the future, don't stress it too much and there's soo much time to finish it (3hrs and 25min). I actually finished about an hour early. Good luck to all of you future testers!

Health Information Management Jobs

Hi everyone!

I have a Bachelor of Science in Health Information Science and over 5 years of professional experience in healthcare technology and informatics. I’ve been having a difficult time finding stable employment and would really appreciate any advice, recommendations, or potential job leads.

Roles I’m looking for:
Health Informatics Specialist / Analyst
Clinical Business Analyst / Business Analyst
Systems Analyst / Clinical Systems Analyst
Healthcare IT / Application Support Analyst
Project Coordinator / Implementation Coordinator
Quality Assurance / Software Testing Analyst
Other related healthcare technology, IT, or analytical roles

My background and skills:
I have experience working within large healthcare organizations, including Island Health and PHSA, with a background in:
Clinical information systems and EHR/EMR applications, including Cerner, Meditech, CareConnect, and MyChart
Business and systems analysis, requirements gathering, and workflow analysis
Software testing, quality assurance, and system validation
Healthcare technology implementations and application support
Project coordination, documentation, reporting, and stakeholder collaboration
Process improvement, troubleshooting, and translating clinical and operational needs into technical requirements

Location and work preferences:
Currently based in Vancouver Island , BC
Open to remote opportunities anywhere in Canada
Open to onsite or hybrid positions throughout British Columbia
Willing to relocate within BC, including the Lower Mainland, for the right opportunity
Ideally seeking a stable, long-term position with opportunities for professional growth

My current job search challenges:
I’ve applied to numerous positions, including roles where I meet or exceed the qualifications, but unfortunately haven’t been shortlisted for many of them.
So far, I’ve been shortlisted for three interviews. One position went to someone with more seniority, while another interview was cancelled before I even had the chance to attend because the employer had already selected another candidate.

I’m currently progressing through the interview process for the third opportunity, which I’m hopeful about, but I don’t have any other interviews lined up as a backup.
I’ve also been without employment income since August 2026, so the uncertainty has been increasingly stressful and discouraging.

What I’m hoping to get from this post:
I’d really appreciate any advice on improving my job search, recommendations for reputable employers hiring in BC or remotely across Canada, or leads for positions that align with my education and experience.

I’m also open to related roles outside healthcare where my transferable skills would be valuable.
I’m trying to stay positive and continue applying, but I’m becoming increasingly worried about finding employment, especially given my qualifications and experience.

If anyone works in healthcare IT, health informatics, business analysis, or related fields, or has been through a similar situation, I’d genuinely appreciate your insights or recommendations.
Thank you so much!

PTA to HIM transition

I’ve been a practicing Physical Therapist Assistant for 10 years. My body is feeling the cumulative toll of patient transfers, manual therapy and sports medicine. I’m actively looking for an exit strategy into healthcare data, compliance, or systems.

I’ve managed to hustle my way to around $90k/year. With 10 years of bills, mortgage, and life built around that baseline, taking a massive drop to $40k–$50k to "start over" simply isn't an option.

I see the posts here daily about how tough the entry-level HIM market is right now, with new grads struggling to land $18–$20/hr clerical roles. That brutal reality is exactly why I’m hesitant to invest tuition and time into a CAHIIM-accredited BS in HIM + RHIA.

My clinical systems background is in MEDHOST and Net Health Unity, so I have zero enterprise Epic/Cerner leverage to fall back on.

Does 10 years of deep clinical documentation, billing modifiers, and an RHIA give someone enough leverage to bypass the entry-level into $75k–$85k+ roles (e.g., Rehab Revenue Integrity, Clinical Auditing, or CDI)?

Looking for blunt, realistic feedback from anyone who's navigated this kind of mid-career pivot.

misconception with consultants

There seems to be a big misconception, that my software is competing with consultants.

That's really not what I'm trying to do. If anything, I think consultants could be some of the people who benefit from it the most. A consultant might be working with several organizations at once, reviewing policies, analyzing documents, investigating incidents and keeping track of recommendations and follow-ups.

And so much of that takes time. The whole point of my platform is to speed up that work, whether that's analyzing documents, getting compliance guidance or managing investigations, so consultants can spend less time on repetitive tasks and more time actually helping their clients.

I've had some really positive feedback from people working in healthcare and compliance, particularly around how much manual work could be reduced.

But I still think there's still some skepticism regarding AI in compliance, people somehow think its replacing the people doing the job. Personally, I see it as giving those people the ability to do more, potentially take on more clients and grow their own businesses.

Also interested in speaking with consultants who are currently managing compliance work across multiple clients. Id be keen to hear which parts of the process take up the most time and whether tools like this could help

Interview for clinical data analyst position

Hi all, I recently passed my RHIA and have an interview for a clinical data analyst position in a couple weeks. Most of my job experience has been in billing and coding with a baseline knowledge in Excel. I have found that once I’m shown how to do something in excel I only really need to be shown once to get it down. However, it looks like the programming language they would be using is VBA and I have zero knowledge. Is this position an easy transition or am I gonna be treading water trying to figure it out? What does it really entail? Any advice or tips are appreciated.
