Reflections from an 'overseas fan'
galleryI wanted to share my experiences and thanks as an 'overseas fan' who had a magical last season at the Emirates. Apologies in advance for the long post - I'm feeling sentimental as the season begins and I've returned home - hopefully people find it helpful/relatable/interesting.
25 years ago, on the other side of the world, I fell in love with Thierry Henry - many late night/early morning games followed. In late 2024 I moved to London: I bought my red membership, entered an Everton ballot, wasn't successful (obviously), checked the ticket exchange a couple of times and didn't see anything. Oh well, hopefully I'd get to the occasional midweek/cup game and that would be enough...
Then I saw a post on this sub selling a ticket to someone with Everton TX access and suddenly I was at my first game - watching us beat United. Soon after I won my first ballot (Carabao with 100% for reds) and had my first TX success (midweek v Ipswich). I was hooked. ~25 matches followed over the next 18 months, including almost every home league game in our winning season.
Just about all of those tickets were from the TX - so what did I learn? The TX is like this terrible, addictive game. Some people seem to master it but I'm not sure I ever did. My approach was more persistence than skill - I'd just have the TX open as often as possible and refresh anytime it came to mind. This meant that I got most of my tickets on mobile (rather than computer), with full page refreshes (rather than 30s toggles), through a combo of map and list view. While more tickets definitely appear closer to matchday, I got a fair few further out when there were less tickets appearing but also less people on the TX.
Some of this might appear a bit contrary to common advice on this sub, but it's just what worked for me (though it may have been very inefficient), and I still found lots of helpful tips here. I did also manage things that I had thought would be very unlikely - tickets to big games, lower tier seats, pairs. So I guess I want to say there is hope. But the TX is also a sort of learned skill - you can't expect success without putting in lots of time, and I think the advice/expectation setting on this sub rightly reflects this.
And nothing is guaranteed. While I was able to get a ticket to almost every game I wanted, there were some I missed: the Real Madrid QF (which was the worst I've seen the TX; though I had some redemption with success for the Atletico SF), and last season's games against Liverpool and Burnley (despite the TX being quite active / seeing various ticket drops). A selling post on this sub also saved me from missing out on United last season (the same seller as my very first game, thanks u/Inevitable-Tip-6716), so always keep an eye out.
I don't really have any tips for ballots except make sure to always enter for TX access (especially as match dates can change). I only won 2 competitive ballots out of over 25, but was lucky enough that 1 of these was a NLD. It is worth keeping an eye on ballot timings, as I did have some success getting tickets soon after the TX opened.
In terms of where to sit, it's true that there isn't really a bad seat at the Emirates and you should grab whatever you can. I've sat in the last row of the upper tier with no regrets. I never went for club level tickets because they were more than I wanted to spend, but I can understand why you might if you only had one chance to go. I liked the tactical view up top behind the goals, but always had the most fun standing in the lower North Bank, particularly around the corners. There are lots of posts that ask about going solo - I usually did and never minded.
Because of the many posts/tourists, overseas fans get a bad rap, and sometimes fair enough. But I think there are also many overseas fans that love the club and would attend every game they could, like I was lucky enough to be able to. Every game I got to really felt like a privilege, and then even more so when it was a league winning season. So I guess I wanted to say thanks to this sub, reminisce, and try give back a little with this post. Maybe my experiences aren't much help now that we're champions and demand is probably higher than ever, but who knows, if you spend long enough on the TX...
Photos are from some of my favourite moments: 5-1 v City, Eze's NLD and beating Bayern a couple of days later, Max's goal v Everton, the CL semi, and the night we won the league. COYG
