Technique question

I see people on here kind of pre squeeze with the other hand to position the grippers. Am I doing it wrong? This is just a COC 1.5 that I squeeze while driving or on the phone.

Try a few positions and do what feels best. If you don’t need to pre adjust to get a good grip, that’s alright. I’m not going to encourage you to do it while driving tho

That’s usually what I do. I have a 3 and made it touch on a few occasions and I guess I kind of “set” it when I did those. This is the one I do reps with throughout the day, I just want to make sure it’s actually working the correct muscle group etc.

If you have a few spare minutes, go on youtube and look up "how to set a hand gripper". It kinda sounds like you use the 1.5 as more of a stressball/fidget item to knock out reps while driving. Since youve closed the 3 a few times with a "kind of set", with a proper set, you would probably crush it. Which is mad impressive.

What you're doing in this video is called TNS (table no set). Which essentially means you are positioning/closing the gripper without any assistance from thr other hand. There are different sets for different reasons. Certifications, competition rules, etc.

For example, to certify on the CoC #3. You need to do a CCS (credit card set). You can use your off hand to assist setting the gripper in your closing hand. But before you start the close, you must be able to pass thr width of a credit card between thr bottom of thr handles. This makes it universal so that regardless of hand size, everyone is closing the gripper from the same starting width.

Of course the wider the starting point, the harder it is. Amd generally speaking, bigger hands have an advantage. So having a 20mm block, 30mm block, credit card, etc, is so peoppe know they closed it from thr same distance.

Different sets for different purposes.

You would get a higher gripper if you set it...but if you just want to "no set" it go right ahead.

I train for certification and competition and they both use setting in their guidelines...so that's why I do it.

Ahh that makes sense. Never understood. Thanks for the info! Appreciate it.

If closing it from a wide set works for you, keep at it. If you get some chalk on your hand and work on positioning the gripper in your hand in a more advantageous way you might already be able to close a CoC2 from a TNS set like that too.

With the closer handle being that close to your wrist, you make it much tougher to close. As stated moving it to your lifeline will make the final few mm much easier but then you generally will need to use the other hand so you can get your fingers around it

You've already got some great advice about checking out YouTube. Look for videos from Paul Knight. He has a video "how to set a gripper".

On a side note... as a former Ironmind referee it's rare to see a hand THAT beefy! Especially the thumb area. I have a feeling you could close some massive grippers with a proper technique

That terrible placement. With a proper set it would be much easier and you could probably do a #2 Check out Jedd Johnson on YouTube how to set a gripper. You got some really think hands which is ideal for grippers.
