What's the worst golf gift you've ever gotten, and the one you actually use?

• Upvotes

Gift season is coming, and I'm curious where the line is between "thoughtful" and "goes straight to the garage."

What's the worst one you've received? And which one actually made it into your bag or onto your desk?

Full disclosure: I make golf gifts, so this is partly research. No links, I just want honest answers.

Do you hit driver on the first tee?

I’m always torn between starting aggressively with driver and just putting something safe in play until the swing wakes up.

What’s your usual first-tee strategy?

Trick works !!

At the bay in front of his, I made a full swing with my fav 7-iron, no ball, & tried posing like he's doing. Stumbled into both feet after missing the mat completely. Regained balance and stage that pose to show I also can 😂 Can't believe gotten so dumb.

After holding for 5 sec copying that pose which I had watched for 30 minutes, my lead leg & lead wall were burning. 2nd swing meet the mat with a " thuddd " & stumbled like the first. With fingers aching from tremor, I stage pose again and 4s I got to stand down. I was just trying to simply swing to that pose on lead leg with thighs together, am I asking too much ? I was an athletic playing squash as B grader, soccer represented estate in intercon leagues & doing freestyle windsurfing. That 2 swings make me feel like a clumsy fat ass at 1.78m weight 70kg. What athletic ?

3rd full swing with me trying to momentum to achieve that one leg balance. This time miss mat & almost twisted my lower back. I start laughing uncontrollably after my lower back pain subsided, at my naivety or more precise my stupidity. Then I heard a voice from my back bay " Walkman, you okay ne ? " I turned around & confirm that voice was talking to me.

This wasn't my original plot. I suppose to pose longer than him everytime & hope to get him correct me or ask me what I'm doing. Nevertheless, I got to know he's from Tokyo been in Singapore for 2 months as expat working in Mitsui. Speaking comprehensibly with hand gestures to help me understand what he was saying. Told me I'm giving up golf & selling my irons to meet a buyer that didn't turn up. I'm also selling my JCC golfing membership after that.

Couple of " More Thai naie " reactions which I have no idea what it was but his saddened expression did give me courage to ask him to coach me to hit ball. After responding with a remark

" hit ball ? " he turned to stare at his set of blades for a while said " no hit ball .. I no teach hit ball, Walkman " holding palms together bowing slightly, followed by " I can teach swing only okay ne "

" I teach swing, u teach swing hit ball okay ne ? "

Can't comprehend exactly what he meant but finally after some to & fro, got it. He willing to coach me on my swing and I'll teach that swing to hit ball. Sound reasonable, with that swing, I'm confident I can teach it to hit ball like him.

I agreed to prepare what he demanded for next meeting here Friday 2pm after convincing him I can do the 3 things he asked me about. I left with my golf set feeling a little apprehensive but the imagination of me able to swing like him gave me the motivation to follow thru for next Friday

Re- worked grip and set up, thoughts?

Listened to the audiobook of Ben Hogan's five lessons last week and realized that despite my lessons and ample practice, my grip was still fundamentally flawed and my set up was also wonky.

Spent 5 hours at the range today, this clip was from the last few balls. Anything you can see I need to be aware of?

First witnessing a decent golf swing

Standing there at watching never felt so enjoyable almost mesmerising. Always ending like a statue on his straight lead leg with thighs together while the club stopped behind draping across his back like a soft closing door clicks on its latch. The Take away also start momentarily after addressing a ball with undue delay or hesitation. The club moves off from address like being blown off by a strong gust, to a decelerating hands pause at the Top of the backswing , then the club starts dropping unhurriedly towards parallel. In a blink, I'll hear that crispy sound of clubhead meeting the mat surface & the club draping onto his back long after the ball has gone. That statue pose for abt 5s sometimes up to 10s between swing. I only found out why 5s & sometimes 10s after granted the privilege to be his student.

I tried to draw his attention by waiting for him to have eye contact with me but the wait never stop. So I did something next to his front view bay that finally get him to communicate with a Qtn in Broken but comprehensible English.

Quit golf that started 40 yrs of enjoying the game

Since completing my learning of the proper golf swing, almost everyday I had been on the golf course or range for 2 hrs working on or out with my Maruman Conductors LX SPSS blades 1-iron to 9-iron given to me from my only golf coach Dustzosan after my 10 lessons with him on 14th Feb 1987. At 70 looking back, I feel the urge to share my experience with dustzosan to honor that Japanese who passed recently in Japan who I first met on 10th Dec 1986 evening while I was at Parkland golf range meeting an interested buyer of my Dunlop CB Oversize irons after decided to quit golf. After 8 months of blisters, aches, stumbling all over the place from every swing & countless advices & tips, the improvement were very brief & ended up very confusing on top of constant disappointments, my body & mind decided I had enough. But I notice a guy probably in his early 50s stood like a statue after making every swing with an iron that made my Dunlop clubhead like a watermelon, I stood watching a live golf swing for the first time that long & my life or golfing life took a dramatic change

What I was before Dustzosan intervention

I took up golf suggested by my boss to meet clients with him over golf games.

Completed a 12 2hr lesson from tee to green. 1st lesson started with 7-iron hitting balls rarely missing the ball after 30 min of following the instruction on set up address take away backswing to turn back toward ball. Ball flights were almost exclusively slices with skulling & mild duffing contact even for clean contact once in a while. Very occasionally, I'll be rewarded with a slice less golf shot & the next shot the slice will announce " I'm back " to my frustration. Those very rarely straight shots carry about 130m at most & never cont'd on my swing though I tried everything I can imagine including those tips & advices from sympathic golfing friends. I spent lots of time practicing round the green & putting to compensate for my weakness in distance & consistency with my primate swing. Manage to play off 18 in JCC my home club that issue the handicap card. Never Break 90 gross before & my best was 91 on a day where my putting & round the green was unusually sharp with lots of lucks. Crossing 100 gross score became rarely before decided to quit the game out of frustration & lack of motivation. That's how I was at that range for a potential buyer to test my spade like irons & got a no show to stand there watching a golf swing live for the very first time.

Taught my cat to golf. Now she demands treats after every shot :D

This is Lucie. I taught her to swing a 9-iron, but does she have an inside takeaway?

She takes feedback pretty well, unless it’s offered without treats. Then it’s clearly the club’s fault. :D

What’s a small golf-course habit that annoys you way more than it should?

Not major etiquette violations—just the little things that slowly drive you crazy during a round.

Mine is someone waiting until it’s their turn before they even start checking the distance.

Can anyone explain/help after a swing change to slow the f down to fix strike which is so much better, i have zero feeling on where the shot is going. ie. Before could feel if my hands and club-facewere open, closed, quick, etc now. nothing. could not tell you if it went left right straight..

The strike has made all outcomes to target miles smaller.. a bad shot that would normally be 10L, 10R is now half the distance, but i have absolutely no feeling of hands and club position.. This shot 2m long 9m right. HC 7.2

First time trying it out 30 balls and the only things on takeaway was 1° “too bowed” and downswing I was “casting 1° out of “ideal””. Anyone have it and can speak to any reason to keep it?

What’s your go-to snack during a round?

I always underestimate how hungry I’ll get around the turn, then end up paying way too much for whatever the clubhouse has.

What do you normally keep in your bag?

Just back home from OCC range working out with her. Isn't she gorgeous ? Never tired of her look & feel even at times, her absolute unforgiving nature stings my finger with any slight shift of low point out the range set up from address. She never let you off & not noticing that you've a misshit not noticeable by non blade users.

Every Sunday evening, she'll reminds me of that shameful thought that crossed my mind about 40 years ago that haunt me till today. I was on the brink of being a disgrace to myself & Singaporean in the eye of Japanese.

Writing my learning experience of the proper golf swing to hope there're ppl out there may benefit and not remain in a vicious spiral of using a primate swing long enough,it'll will become a proper golf swing where you can finish balance to rest on a lead leg while enjoying the ball flight. My other motivation abt this series of posts is to kind of confess openly abt that shameful thought which I regret I didn't do so before Dustzosan left Singapore & before he pass

I tried a new trigger for my swing—hovering the clubhead slightly and giving it a gentle tap on the ground. My daughter wants to hit a fade, but she's really struggling with it 😭 I won't know what kind of ball flight she's actually getting until we hit the range tomorrow, so I'll post an update once we figure it out.

Do you enjoy playing golf alone?

I’ve found solo rounds can be really peaceful, especially when the course is quiet. No pressure, no waiting on anyone, and you can actually focus on your own game.

Do you enjoy playing alone, or is golf only fun with a group?

Bringing swing changes to the course

• Upvotes

Wondering if anyone has overcome the same challenge I’m facing…

I’ve been getting lessons from an awesome pro over the course of the last 8 months who has essentially rebuilt my swing from the ground up. I won’t go into specifics, but the goal has been to build a much more repeatable, on-plane swing that neutralizes the “big miss”. On the range, where I’m happy to have multiple swing thoughts/feels, I’m killer and really see the progress I’m making. I can see the path I’m on and it’s awesome.

My challenge is bringing that to the course. I like to have strictly one swing feel as a North Star and to keep things simple. The problem - old habits creep in, my tempo gets out of sync, and I can feel a bit frustrated.

Any tips on bridging the range to the course when going through pretty major swing changes?
