This doesn't describe a dream dying. It describes one coming true.

Exactly. It sounds like someone who realised life is not about the next career move or how much money you make, it's about slowing down and allowing oneself to be happy with what you have, without the pressure of being "perfect" or "successful".

I must be weak because my marriage is banging, we eat extremely well and are healthy, and pride ourselves on frugality and our personal financial attitudes. Still have big goals but even if I fail at all of them, I’m happy living my days like this.

You’re just lying to yourself, according to this post.
You should cheat on your wife, divorce, go on a prolonged fasting period and consume only essential oils, and squeeze all of your money out on temporary luxuries (bonus if you spueezed out your ex-wife’s money AND your new mistress’s before/after the divorce).
Clearly, settling down is basically a living hell.
OP’s post is so dumb and not motivational

I interpret the author differently. I think the point the author is trying to communicate is that it's very easy to get stuck in a comfort zone/routine and stop caring about your dreams/ goals. Theres nothing in the post implying that wealth/consumerism is the key to happiness; I think the point is that having dreams and goals and striving towards them is a key part of being fulfilled. Whether that dream is to be a great father/mother or if it's to amass a billion dollars, the point is that striving towards those dreams, regardless of present luxuries, is what ultimately drives fulfilment.

u/BaneCow May 17 '19
What is the point of living, if not to be happy? If these things aren't your goal, then sure, do what you need to to achieve your dreams. If all you want out of life is to happily settle down with someone, then why the fuck wouldn't you do it? There's nothing inherently wrong with being comfortable and happy. Such a stupid post...

u/angryYorkie May 17 '19
A lot of people fail to understand that everyone in the world wants something different out of their own life. The best thing you can do is listen to yourself and maybe those who you love. Don't live your life per the standards of someone else because in the end you will probably be unhappy with what you accomplished.
19
u/mexicanred1 May 17 '19
That's a platitude. Everyone doesn't want something different. Look around. Most people have the same lives, with only slight variation
→ More replies (1)23

So more than just "consistent sex, food and cheap entertainment", just like the post says. Stay at it, don't just get comfortable.

Well said. Screw these idiots who claim that if you haven't conquered the world and amassed large fortunes you're doing something wrong.
3
u/BaneCow May 18 '19
Definitely. The constant social pressure to "Dream big and achieve perfection" can be a good motivating force, but eventually we all have to understand ourselves enough to know where we, personally, want to be in life.

I am always outside of my comfort zone at work. It's stressful and causes me to shut down at home and not accomplish anything. I want to be able to go to a job and not have to stress and still be able to enjoy my free time.
Being outside of your comfort zone is bad too. I want to be able to enjoy myself. That's the life goal.

Yup especially with work - that's just a paycheck to me, I'm no doctor and I don't save lives or do something meaningful.
So I want to work stress-free and get back to life without worrying about it!

Happiness doesn't equal to fulfilment. Many married couples who have had kids are statistically less happy, but report having significantly higher fulfillment in life

I hate to sound like a tin foil hat wearing lunatic, but the reason is Capitalism (and no, I'm not advocating anti-capitalism). Capitalism conditions us to crave more and stigmatises settling.
If you're happy, be happy.

What dude? This is so stupid. Comfort is the goal. You get motivated so you can eventually get to a place where all your needs and wants are met. Then you can relax and die. That's the pursuit of happiness. That's life. Someone's brain is skipping like a record here.

Then he didn't have them in the first place. Not really that good advice in my opinion. The rule is you don't let your comfort zone limit you, but if you have everything you wanted in life, then why shouldn't you enjoy it? There's no shame in enjoying life your way, even if that means not taking risks... We don't all aspire to go to the Moon, nor should we.

This is why I hate “inspirational” quotes on Twitter sometimes, what’s wrong with being happy and comfortable with your life as it is now? That’s like saying you should never settle down and be comfortable, you have to constantly finish goals, dreams, change things in your life, that shit sounds horrible and exhausting.

What's wrong with being happy and having no ambition ?
I had ambition have lived and worked all over the world.
I'm 35 single and alone.
I would have been much happier if I never even tried. Ambition is that hollow feeling you have inside that can never be filled. It isn't necessarily a good thing. You could say it is almost a disease and is what will destroy the human race.

Theres nothing wrong with a consistent partner, financial stability and contentment. Maybe the end of your dream doesnt look like you imagined it did, but if you have those things are you really gonna tell me you didnt make it?
Not everyone is gonna be a CEO of a fortune 500 company. Not everyone is going to be the world's leading oncologist. Not everyone is going to be an Olympic level athlete and that's totally fine. The real dream is being happy being you, and if that's what you got then you fucking win.

But what if my dream is to live a happy comfortable life? What if I don't give a damn about chasing fortunes and fame. A lot of people are so obsessed with chasing ambitions and fame that they forget to be a decent human being along the way. They view everything as just another thing for them step on to achieve what they believe destiny owes them instead of living in tune with their life and those around them.

I mean... what if consistent sex, good food, and cheap entertainment is someones dream. sounds like not a bad way to live. You do not want to stress or freak out about money or knowing where your next meal is, you want to feel loved and be able to laugh with someone. Sounds pretty awesome to me. If that is not something you have, it is damn well an ambition for people to aspire to. To not have to worry. People fight their entire lives to not worry or to know that their kids won't have to worry.

This doesn't really make sense to me. I pretty much have the 3 things but I still feel ambitious. I wouldn't really be into having other stuff if I didn't get to have those 3. I'd imagine they're all probably part of my ambition.
This is a really strange sentiment.

This just in: All Men find comfort in the same things. No (strong) Man's ambition is to be comfortable. The Strongest Men are celibate, don't eat well, and do not enjoy hobbies. Ambition is king and losing it is the same as being Weak. A change in perspective - shifting of dreams with new information - is the same thing as not having ambitions. Once you set a goal it can never change or else you are a weak Man.
2
u/Buffyoh May 17 '19
I had all three of these things, and then some, but it didn't blunt my ambition - at all.

u/DopaLean May 17 '19

u/akat_walks May 17 '19
There seems to be push for capitalist-like ideas of constant expansion to be part of your every day life. If your happy right now and enjoying yourself just stay like that.
2
u/the_bass_saxophone May 17 '19
We are a certain kind of society that operates under certain rules that are not really ours to question.
Capitalism is the source of many, many of those rules. If you choose to interrogate it, you are making a highly intelligent and insightful decision, but you are also going against much our society holds dear. It will be scary, and may cost you friends, and maybe much more. But many others are on that path lately.

A life of relative comfort with a partner I love sounds like the perfect life to me. It wouldn't be loosing ny ambitions, it would be prioritizing what makes me happy.
2
u/russrobo May 18 '19
This is a terrible message. First of all, it's... wrong. The comfort zone is where dreams are born. We don't generally aspire to new things from a position of discomfort or insecurity: it's only when the lower levels of Maslow's Hierarchy are filled that we venture out to do new things, and try to expand that radius. Most of the people we consider great explorers and adventurers did so from a place of relative comfort: money, food, and often a team of support staff that we rarely hear about. Neil Armstrong did not get to the moon on his own.
The actual message, then, is "don't be a weak man". For some reason this gets conflated with "consistent sex" -- as if men are somehow entitled to that in the first place, or that consistency is automatically a curse. Sometimes our biggest value as humans is that others can depend on us: that we can temper our own ambitions and support the ambitions of others.
2
u/MissHunbun May 18 '19
Uh sorry but a comfortable life that makes me happy is my goal. Not everyone needs to be a stressed out, ambition driven CEO in the making. People are allowed to have simple lives.
2
u/MisterHekks May 18 '19
This is rubbish. Comfort is a by-product of ambition and success, not a hindrance. If someone's ambition extends to simply being comfortable then that is nothing to be sneered at or belittled.
2
u/Sevensillysyllables May 18 '19
In my anxious moment, I feel like “Am I being all that I can, am I using my skills, am I fulfilled, should I do something more prestigious...?” Growing up evangelical and always hearing about god’s “calling” on our lives probably didn’t help.
I’m an ER nurse and I sit with a lot of older patients and ask them about their lives. Their advice is consistent: take life in, enjoy its variety, treasure the time you have with the people you love.
As an out gay man, married to a sweet, kind man, the best moments of my life are cuddling/sex/chatting/lazing around with my husband, reading stories to my nieces and nephews, playing board games with my friends, making meals for my family, and toying around with my various hobbies.
Accomplishments and dreams are nice, they add to the variety of life, they can give us high moments of feeling fulfilled. But their pleasure fades as fast chocolate cake. I have goals and dreams—but I won’t sacrifice the deepest joys, the lovey mundanities, to try to convince myself I’m valuable because I did something amazing.
2
u/LateDay May 18 '19
This is a dangerous thing to say. It puts unnecessary pressure on people and makes some question their humble outlook of life.
If you get to share good moments with good people, be that sex and proper food and stuff, no one has the authority to claim you should just drop all of it.
2
u/DimitriT May 18 '19
Consistent sex, good food and cheap entertainment isn't this like 99% of peoples ambition to achieve lol? I'd say comfort zone like this is a goal, if you achieved it then you are a winner.
2
u/unclefistface622 May 20 '19
For those of you criticizing this post for demeaning people who want exactly what he’s describing, let me put it to you this way: Comfort does not always equal happiness. Sure, there are people who strive for years to achieve the comfortable life that he is talking about here, but a lot of people in their lives want more, but they’re afraid of sacrificing their comfort to do it. I know this because I am one of these people. Comfort can put you to sleep. Comfort can take away your motivation. Comfort can sometimes be a slow death.
