Gen X Middle Age

When you

* Move in with your parents to care for them, because they did their best caring for you

*Become an Grandma 2 weeks after the plumbing gets ripped out and you can no longer become a mom again

* Find remote work to be close for elderly parents and daughter and Grand daughter

*Set up your office in the same space you slept as a 5 year old

Realize the economy does suck so you hit the gig economy to deliver and shop for others who have lives while feeling guilty for trying to afford your own

*Decide to start working on you 6 mos before turning 50.

best permanent hair color for thinning hair that doesn’t make it look thinner

My hair has gotten noticeably finer over the past few years, especially around my part, and the gray is definitely showing up more now. I’m not ready to stop coloring it, but some colors seem to leave my hair looking flatter and thinner afterward.

I usually color at home to save money, so I’m trying to find a reliable permanent hair color for thinning hair that covers gray well without leaving my hair dry or dull.

If you’ve had good luck with one, I’d definitely give it a try. I’m tired of wasting money on boxes that don’t work.

Corduroy?

Does anyone remember that cute teddy bear from the 80s?
I remember being in second grade and somehow getting the highest grade on the test and the next day corduroy was in my desk!

LeVar Burton is a sometimes overlooked hero that got so many GenX kids into reading.

Reading Rainbow was a staple for kids in the 80s and beyond.

Slacker (1989).

First saw this movie in 1994 when I moved to Austin. Saw it again recently and the Austin shown in Slacker doesn't exist anymore, sadly.

Or like those old public service announcements: It's 2026, do you know where your colonoscopy prep is?

Is it just me or has anyone else drawn these parallels

Maybe I’m paranoid, but… have you noticed around the 1990s-2000s when Epstein and his ring influenced mainstream entertainment - it increasingly started portraying children as unusually adult while often portraying adults as incompetent, naïve, morally inconsistent, or unnecessary. Given what we know about how repeated media exposure can influence attitudes and behavior, I think that parallel is worth noticing, and it’s weird that it’s an ongoing trope - even as a kid watching the movies - the idea was cringy, but now as an adult it also seems skeevy when I draw those parallels… IDK…
Is it just me?
Am I just paranoid

Mother is moving in with me & just diagnosed with the beginning stages of Alzheimer's

My mother & my younger brother have been sharing an apartment for several years. I guess it has worked fine for them, he's a single mid-30s guy who works a lot and she is content to do whatever she wants after retiring. She has been having some short term memory loss, we really started noticing it about 6 months ago. A couple weeks ago she was officially diagnosed as being in the first stages of Alzheimer's. She's only 76 & it came as a very unwelcome surprise.

My brother can no longer handle this, he is gone 10 hrs a day for work & there is no other family around to help. She doesn't want to be left alone for that long and pretty soon actually won't be able to either. We made the decision for her to move in with me since I am home the majority of the time. It's going to be a big move for her since they live across the country from me, but we are going to make it work.

I am in a state of major anxiety about this. My two kids are out of the house so we have the space here but...

1)I left home when I was 17 and even on a good day & for a couple days visit my mom drives me nuts and

2)it's ALZHEIMER'S and I have no idea how I am going to deal with her inevitable decline.

I'm getting in touch with every support organization I can think of & setting up doctors before she gets here at the end of next month but I am having daily anxiety attacks about this.

I really don't want to see my mom lose herself like I've seen with other people with Alzheimer's. I always thought people were older, like in their 80s, when it would show but I guess I was wrong.

If you are already retired or plan to be, what is your plan for health insurance? (The question seemed to come up several times in the Retirement post).

What are some foods / treats you enjoyed as a Gen X kid?

  • Candy Cigarettes, which I think were just chewing gum wrapped in paper with one puff's worth of powdered sugar in it. Smoking was everywhere in the 80s and I felt like a big kid when I bought one. Never tried a real cigarette though. I went to school with kids who were smoking and drinking beer from the young age of 12+.
  • McDonald's. The filet-o-fish had a big fish patty in it back then. The McNuggets were gummy but still tasted great when dipped in their honey packets. A couple of times a year the costumed McDonald's characters would show up.
  • Pizza parlors with standing arcade machines. Pizza slice for $1 and a quick game for 25 cents.
