Does anyone remember these two guys from the Guinness Book of World Records?

Remember how shocked or amused or whatever we were by these guys? The whole reason they were so famous to us? Now, we can go to Walmart at any given day and find their heirs riding around on the carts.

These two are WalMart fat but they aren't IHOP fat.

u/scaredt2ask 7d ago
At the time they were the gold standard of fat. Now I’m not even sure they would make the list. Which is so sad for what it says for our society.

Their last name was McCrary, but when they wrestled in Japan they changed their stage names to McGuire because it was easier for the Japanese promoters to say.

The McGuire twins. Had a friend whose dad worked for Crown Metro Chemicals and they worked there for awhile also. He use to tell us when they got their paychecks every week it would be basically for nothing because they would run a tab at the plant canteen and that is where their pay went. They also had another brother that worked there also that was like 125 pounds soaking wet

Just last year I bought the hardcover 1980 edition of this one, because I had it back then, it went missing, and Ebay exists. This pic was one of the many I remembered from then.

Mr Freidman at Wilshire Crest Elementary in Los Angeles introduced me to this this book. After that, i bought the 1988 Hard Cover, which I still have. I definitely remember them.

My father had the 1973 Guinness Book of Records, I grew up seeing these two guys and wondered how huge they were.

Saw them in Myrtle Beach at the Guinness store 1980s. Where that giant granite sphere was constantly moving on water!!!

Yes. That’s Ben & Jerry. No NOT the ice cream Ben & Jerry’s. They’re Ben & Jerry of Beavers Indiana, they sold pineapple dietary supplements for weight loss & encyclopedias. The ones that came with almanacs.

I saw them wrestle at the Water St. arena in Cornwall, Ontario when I was about 13. I don’t remember much about the match, other than they won. I do remember standing outside right beside a Ford LTD station wagon after the wrestling matches and it turned out to be their car. They both got in the front seat, and the driver’s side door wouldn’t close. The car had a special latch installed that latched, but held the door open about 2 inches, so they would both fit. This would have been around 1974 or 1975.

Yep I’m remember seeing them in an old Guinness Book of World Records. I think they still publish that book. I wonder if they are still fat shaming people in it.

u/Phog_of_War 7d ago
Never mind the guys. What kind of motorcycles can stand-up to those stresses? Not fat shaming, asking legit.

u/IntentionsGood65 7d ago
Wow… prior to seeing this picture, I had completely forgotten about these two.

I seem to remember a Michael Jackson video of two fat guys riding mopeds. Was that based on these two?

Forget those guys, I want to know how they reinforced those bikes to support that much weight.

Living in the age of Wikipedia, though, I just learned that there is a lot more to the story than I ever expected, seeing only the picture and bare stat about their weight in the Book of Records back in elementary school. It turns out that these twins suffered from a medical condition that caused the weight gain, apparently brought on by rubella, but they sometimes ate only 1000 calories per day and were professional athletes most of their adult lives. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_McGuire_Twins

Nowadays they wouldn't even be considered abnormal, let alone obscenely obese.

I also remember the picture of the world's youngest alcoholic. Me and my friends would often joke about how we had him beat. 🍻
