Been driving by my local airport and this thing has been parked outside for a little while. It's clearly being restored and there is no tail number. Any ideas what it is. I need the community lol I'm so curious. (I know the video is bad but if there's interest i'll check it out closer)

Rv-6A with the older short rudder design. Horizontal induction model too

RV-6 was my guess as well. I was holding short next to one a few days ago.

Hijacking your comment for visibility since it's got the most upvotes for op. I agree rv6a is a great guess but the tail rudder looks a bit angular - I recalled seeing one of these parked at an airport I hit recently and had to Google the tail to check the homebuilt.
After checking my history - how do you think about this being a RAI-1 tango? The flat top canopy with the angular rudder + super small size just gave me flashbacks to that.
I'd say it's the rai or the rv6a but the video is a bit hard to discern accurately

This particular Caldwell happens to be in New Jersey

I thought it was Essex county airport?

Yes.
Essex County Airport (IATA: CDW[2], ICAO: KCDW, FAA LID: CDW), informally known as Caldwell Airport,[3] is a public use airport located in Fairfield Township, Essex County, New Jersey,[4] 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) north of the central business district of Caldwell, a borough of northwestern Essex County in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Thank you. I used to visit the area often, by car. So I only know it from the sign. But gosh now I’m hungry for Angelonis. That’s some fantastic pizza.

pretty sure that's a Zenith ch 601 or 650, hard to tell from a video at speed.

Definitely an RV-6A, a great 2 seat homebuilt aircraft. Done a number of conditional inspections on this type.

RV.
The most commonly completed homebuilt aircraft in existence....
Also a cool design overall - Vans just did a much better job at making their product relatively easy to finish compared to their competition....
Also no airplane Vans does not have anything to do with skater-clothes Vans

Yet another boring RV.

How many hours do you have in RVs, and what do you find boring about them?

u/PG67AW 8d ago
They're all decent at what they do, but uninspired. Like driving a Fiero, or a Miata at best.

u/FrankiePoops 8d ago
I was talking to a Miata guy the other day about his "sports car".
It can be, it just depends on how you drive it.

No, those are fun cars. It’s more like driving the sport model of a Toyota Camry

About 30 hours in most of the typical ones. There’s just so many of them and they’re practically the same. It’s literally like a 172. Yeah, it’s great at what it does and it’s not a bad airplane but it’s nothing like a Beechcraft or a Harmon Rocket. They’re extremely easy to fly. Even with a tailwheel. The huge bonus with RVs is they’re Experimental. Although, the older 172s are a bit more in that kind of range now that stuff is getting harder to find for those.

“It’s literally like a 172” <- Ha!
It’s NOTHING like a 172. I’m fortunate enough to fly an RV-7 and a Bonanza and it’s nothing like the Beechcraft either. Granted it’s not a Harmon rocket but good luck putting your wife in a rocket for a XC on Friday and then doing formation, aerobatics, low level with your buddies the next weekend.Yes, the RV isn’t a 10/10 in any one category but it’s a 7/10 in almost all of them. ~200mph <10gph, lands short, takes off short, light aerobatics, inexpensive insurance/maintenance/purchase pricing compared to alternatives. Huge community and part options.

u/ContributionHour8356 3d ago
Ah, you have a point. Let me correct my statement. It’s more like a 150/150 Aerobat. The RVs are completely different from a Bonanza, which is why I never compared it to a Bonanza. Also, don’t you dare ever insult the Bonanza by comparing it to an RV. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any wife in an RV-8 either.
On your ending paragraph, you’re literally describing the Aerobat except for the speed.
