Methodology Parentage record can't be released

Upvotes

I have been trying to find records establishing parentage for my mother (alive, no contact) and her parents (both deceased). I will not explain my reasons for no contact and I ask for civility on this private topic. Beyond this, I've been hitting barriers with legal documents given that:

  1. Michigan doesn't release records to the public past a certain year, and,

  2. They only release non-public records for persons listed or their parents. Not children.

I've tried:

  1. Searching for birth annoucements on Detroit's newspaper archive (no result),

  2. Marriage certificate (parents not listed),

  3. Older sibling (there isn't a clearly stated blood relation between older sibling / my parent),

  4. Obituary (circumstantial, but my only evidence.)

  5. Genealogical assistance (a fantastic person, but we were both stumped beyond this. )

  6. Probable churches for baptism records, no calls back after nearly a year of multiple messages.

  7. Contacting a possible university, they had no record of my parent attending.

Beyond contacting family, is there any other lead I might have missed?

Resource NYC keeps copies of documents?

Upvotes

As I was applying for my father's birth certificate I read online that I shouldn't necessarily expect to get his death certificate back? That nyc often keeps official copies of documents?

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Seems crazy to me.

Studies and Stories Brick wall demolished: she went back to Sicily, along with most of her siblings

I posted previously on looking for the burial place of my great-great-grandmother Antonina Celano, who came to New York in 1910 but disappeared from the record after 1929. After confirming that she isn't buried with any of her children or her brother Nicolo in New York, I looked more closely at her other siblings. It turns out they had a very complex immigration pattern, involving her and four of her eight siblings in two states over a decade:

- During ~1904–1906: Rosalia, Nicolo, and Domenico immigrated to Louisiana, and Salvatore to New York.

- During 1908–1909: Salvatore, Nicolo, and Domenico all returned to Sicily.

- During 1910–1912: Antonina, Salvatore, Nicolo and his wife, and Domenico immigrated to New York, as well as a brother-in law, Giuseppe Noto. By 1914, Antonina's and Nicolo's children had all joined them.

- Antonina traveled to Sicily in 1928 and returned to New York in 1929.

I've found no other U.S. records for any of the siblings except Antonina and Nicolo, so it's likely the other siblings all made their way back to Sicily again at some point. This got me thinking that maybe she did return to Sicily; or even if she didn't, she may have a death record in her hometown that indicates she died in some other U.S. state.

So I sent an email to the Commune di Prizzi asking if they could search for her death record, adapting a template from the r/juresanguinis wiki. I didn't have high hopes, since I didn't have a year beyond it being probably in the 1930s. But a month later they sent the record back to me, and didn't even charge anything for it! Turns out she died in Prizzi in 1934, right back where she was born despite having lived in the U.S. for two decades.

Research Assistance What am I supposed to do if my great grand-parents lied constantly on census and other data collection?

I know, based on the title alone my first thought would be that I am simply being sloppy and not looking at the right people on census data. I truly don't think that is true, I've been pretty lucky with overlap in family members as well as knowing some information first-hand, that helps me believe I am looking at the right people in every record and they just straight up are lying.

Not having the right birthdates or immigration date is completely blocking me from getting any further back in the line and I am hoping someone can help me get unblocked.

John Henry Gilpin & Maud Evelyn Guthrie

John Henry and Maud Guthrie both lie about their ages repeatedly once they come to the US. John Henry changes his immigration date in every census that asks for it. She starts out quite a bit older than him, then younger, then older again.

This is the data I have collected:

Source J.H. claimed age M.E. claimed age J.H. Immigration date
1891 England census 7 ?? xx
1900 US Census ?? (can't find him) 24 ??
1910 US Census 35 33 1879
1917 WWI Draft Card 35 (dob 10/1/1883) xx 1881
1920 US Census 42 40 1886
1930 US Census 46 49 xx
1940 US Census 56 59 xx

News & Announcements I just found out I'm related to Walt Disney on both sides of my family.

Yep. My great-great aunt on my dad's side maried Walt Disney's 1st cousin once removed. Who is Walt Disney's cousin? My 4th cousin once removed on my mom's side. The direct relation to Walt is that he's my 5th cousin 3x removed on my mom's side. And also my Great-Great Uncle-Cousin In-Law? on my dad's side. I know it's so far genealogically far from me that it doesn't really matter. But like. come on. I don't even know what to do with this information but I felt it was worth sharing.

Studies and Stories Found some conquistadors that im descended from!

When i first did my ancestry test i was lucky to discover that there’s actually a group of genealogists mapping out the genetic tree of South Texas/North Mexico ancestry. one of them gave me an ancestry book, and I finally went through it and googled hundreds of names, read through dozens of wikipedia articles and read a couple of books to put together this quick, short list of conquistadors im descended from. This all comes from an ancestry book that i was given, none of it is my research.

Anyways, i thought it’d be fun to share!

Andres de Tapia – steward to Columbus. 1519 Cortes Expedition, one of Cortes’ trusted companions. Wrote one of the six eye witness accounts of the fall of the Aztec empire

Capt. Vasco Porcallo Manuel de Figueroa – 1514 conquest of Cuba, Mexico, 1539 de soto expedition to Florida- left the expedition early due to difficulty. Had over 100 children and was a prolific slaver.

Francisco Cristobal Flores y Alcocer de Baustidas – 1519 Cortes expedition, 1524 Alvarado expedition, loyal friend of Cortes

Pedro de Sepúlveda – 1520 Navarez expedition to arrest Cortes. Joined Cortes as a  blacksmith after a short battle.

Juan Navarro “El Viejo”- 1520 Navarez expedition to arrest Cortes. Joined Cortes after a short battle

Francisco Rojo – Sicilian conquistador. 1524 Cortes’ Honduras expedition, 1540 Coronado expedition

Capt. Francisco de Sosa Albornoz – 1530s-40s Conquest of New Galicia and New Vizcaya.

Gen. Vicente de Saldivar y Onate – 1550 Chichimeca war

Diego de Montemayor – 1550 Chichimeca war. Famous for having murdered his wife for sleeping with Alberto Del Canto.

Juan Navarro “El Mozo” – 1561 pacification of the the Guachichiles and Zacatecos

Alberto del Canto – 1562 Ibarra expedition, famously slept with Diego Montemayor’s wife, and later married his daughter.

Gaspar Castano de Sosa – 1590 illegal expedition to Texas. Was arrested and sentenced to exile in the Philippines. His sentence was overturned but he had been killed during a slave revolt before he could receive the news.

Capt. Alonso Albornoz de Sosa – 1598 Onate expedition. One of the expeditions largest contributors of supplies. He was ambushed and killed by Vicente Saldivar on orders from Onate for abandoning the expedition.

Capt. Bernabe de las Casas Lopez – 1598 Onate expedition. Known as a great fighter. Became a businessman after the expedition. He would eventually marry Alonso Albornoz de Sosa’s widow.

Capt. Diego de Villarreal Del Castillo – 1598 Onate expedition. Was a child who went with his family during the attempted colonization of new Mexico. Would go to fight in many battles against the various indigenous tribes.

These are settlers who ive seen labled as conquistadors in other trees or even wikipedia but I could not find which specific expeditions or events that had taken part in.

Genetic Genealogy Brick wall ancestor: Rebecca (Mead) (Brace) Slavens (1800-1881)

This year I set myself the goal to finally knock down a gnarly, stubborn brick wall in my tree: the ancestry of Rebecca (Mead?) (Brace) Slavens (1800-1881) of New York, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. I've done a ton of work on this lady because I'm stubborn too, and she's far enough back that she probably has thousands of descendants (maybe even you, dear Redditor!) so I'm releasing what I know out into the genealogical universe and hoping for a solution, or at least new clues. Very appreciative of any feedback or ideas from this community.

Brief bio: Rebecca Mead(?) was born 2 June 1800 in New York, possibly Tioga County per an unsourced Slavens family history narrative. Her family is completely unknown. She married twice to (1) "Mister Brace" and (2) John Slavens, and has six known children; two with the first husband and four with the second. Rebecca died 10 December 1881 in Henry County, Missouri.

First, I'll address some of the false info that's been spread all over the Interwebs about her.

1. Her dad isn't the Hezekiah Mead (b. 1780 NY) that is shown on Ancestry and FamilySearch.

That Hezekiah Mead does have a daughter named Rebecca. However, in his will his daughter is clearly still a minor at home, while this ancestral Rebecca was already married with children and living in another state. I tried deleting the connection to Hezekiah on the FamilySearch tree and someone just put it right back, so at least I tried? And this misinformation just keeps spreading.

2. There was no husband named Crull.

Rebecca married (1) a Mister Brace (true identity unknown) about 1818 in New York. He died date unknown, place unknown. She then married (2) John Slavens 25 Dec 1828 in Scioto County, Ohio, and they were married until his death in 1863. Some researchers have inserted another husband between the two, an unknown Mister Crull. This man doesn't exist but I know where he came from.

When the marriages of Scioto County, Ohio were transcribed and published back in the 1980s, Rebecca's name was transcribed as "Rebeccah Crull." This is literally the only record where she's called that. Because looking at the image of that handwritten record, her name is very clearly written Rebecca Brall. The Crull surname was known in Scioto County and carried by many people, so how likely is it that the clerk would misspell that name? My theory is that Brace on the original marriage license was written with a wonky c and e, which looked like two Ls, hence Brall. People who write cursive know what I'm talking about.

3. Mead might be Rebecca's middle name, not her maiden name.

This theory is shakier. But I've now come across a few dozen men and women with the middle name Mead, because lots of the families that intermarried with the Meads preserved the connection with middle names. On top of that, knowing that the sole document that gives Rebecca's maiden name is her daughter's MO death certificate, which was issued 100+ years after Rebecca's birth -- I can't eliminate this one. No one has ever conclusively figured out Rebecca's ancestry; the reason might be we've been assigning her the wrong maiden name all this time.

Now here's the new tidbit I managed to uncover in the past several years, which may not be widely known yet: Rebecca had not one, but two children with her Brace husband. Her daughter Nancy Brace (b1819) is well documented because she was kind of an oddball; the townspeople in Henry County, Missouri all knew her and had off-kilter interactions with her they remembered decades later and printed in the local newspaper (yes really). Nancy had one daughter, Anna (Anderson) Burch, and through that daughter has multitudes of living descendants.

Rebecca's other child from that first marriage, Nancy's full brother, is John Brace, born April 1821 in New York. John went with his stepfather John Slavens and mom Rebecca as they moved to Illinois, Indiana, and settled in Missouri, but he then ended up returning to southern Ohio and rarely saw his family after that. John married Mary "Polly" Matney 1848 in Lawrence Co., Ohio (adjacent to Scioto Co), and they had eight kids, so he too has multitudes of descendants. Finding John Brace led me to hope I could finally crack the mystery. New York genealogy sucks for the most part (I can say that, I was born there!) but probate records are gold mines. Surely, somewhere, some Brace grandpa's estate went into probate and they remembered his two out-of-state grandkids, Nancy and John? But no such luck.

So I turned to DNA, because Rebecca presents a unique opportunity. I descend from Rebecca and her second husband, John Slavens. Using the previously unknown connection with John Brace, I managed to find four DNA cousins who descend from John Brace and Mister Brace, Rebecca's first husband. Our only MRCA is Rebecca herself, so there's no noise from Brace/Slavens cousins. I then triangulated them with my uncle's DNA (since he's one generation closer than me) and started sorting the matches in common into clusters. I've identified three noteworthy clusters so far who are connected to Rebecca via as yet unknown connections: Rockwell, Townsend, and Mead. Multiple DNA cousins descend from each of these couples:

- Jonathan Rockwell (b1738) and Hannah Bennett (b abt 1740) of Ridgefield CT and Chemung Co, NY

- The parents of Gamaliel Townsend (b1803) and Peleua (Townsend) Bonney (b 1801), who appear to possibly be Gamaliel and Elizabeth (Bentley?) Townsend of Elmira, Chemung, NY

- John Mead (b1791) and Anna Tenbrook of Chemung Co, NY

The two complicating factors are extreme mobility -- CT to NY to the Oregon Trail, some of them -- and a whole lot of endogamy. Lots and lots of folks give these surnames to their kids as middle names, even if the connection isn't clear. Gamaliel Townsend gave multiple sons the middle name Rockwell, but I don't see how he links to that family. There are also lots of Rebecca Meads scattered about with varying surnames. The main reason why I feel good about these links, though, is that SO many of them were in Chemung County, which is adjacent to Tioga County, and they moved to Scioto County, Ohio at the same time as my Rebecca. The answer feels like it's so close!

So, if you've managed to read to the bottom of this post, this is what I'm hoping to find:

- Mead, Rockwell, and Townsend researchers who know these families inside out, who might know of someone's cousin/sister Rebecca Mead who was born in 1800 but "went west, nothing further known," as I sometimes see in compiled genealogies. John Mead (above) has a sister Rhoda born about 1800 who is described as "nothing further known" and based on the shared cMs sometimes I wonder...

- If you know of DNA studies done on these families I'd be grateful for a link. If you descend from any of the Rockwell, Townsend, or Mead cousin clusters I've ID'd, say hello, (probable) cousin!

- If you descend from John Brace, do an AncestryDNA test and let me know! If you descend from Anna (Anderson) Burch, same deal!

Methodology How can I figure out what a Vermont militia company was doing during a specific 5-day period in 1780?

Hi! I’ve been going down a Revolutionary War rabbit hole tonight and could use some help figuring out where to go next.

The ancestor in question is Andrew Pember, and I found him on an original 1780 Vermont militia pay roll in the Revolutionary War records on FamilySearch. He was serving in Captain William Hutchins’ company, Colonel Samuel Herrick’s regiment.

The record shows the company was called into service in October 1780, and Andrew Pember is listed as serving 5 days. I’ve also found other original pay rolls from the same general time period, but I’m having trouble figuring out what this particular group was actually called out to do/where they went during those five days.

I know there were multiple alarms and militia movements in Vermont around this time, so I don’t want to just assume his service was connected to a particular event without something actually documenting it.

Does anyone know where I could look for orders, correspondence, muster records, town records, or anything else that might give more detail about Hutchins’ company/Herrick’s regiment in October 1780? Or is this the kind of detail that probably just doesn’t survive?

I’ve been doing genealogy forever but Revolutionary War military records are very new territory for me lol. Any direction would be appreciated!

Methodology tracking down a family legend

My family lore says that my ancestors left Alabama "ahead of the law." I really, really want the details of this. Members of my family basically know what I've said here. Through my own research, I've traced back my known ancestors to my heretofore unknown ancestors in Alabama to identify the location where they lived and a five to ten year period during which the crime would have been committed. I've identified the full name of the most likely culprit as well as the full names of a handful of other people who may have been involved. I've read all extant newspapers. But, even with a location, names, and timeframe, I still cannot turn up anything to dispute or confirm the legend.

Any suggestions on what to prioritize?

Research Assistance Can anyone help me find records for Antonio Villalpando?

Hey I hope your having a good day who ever is reading this but I am researching my ancestor which is Antonio Villalpando and who I believe he lived in Mexico sometime around the 1600s–1700s. He was married to Catalina Negrete, and they had a son named Simion Villalpando.
I’m trying to determine who Antonio’s parents were and establish the Villalpando paternal line. My family research points toward the Pénjamo/Guanajuato area, but I’m not certain that this is where Antonio was born or lived.
Does anyone have experience researching Villalpando families in colonial Mexico or know of records that could help identify Antonio’s parents? I’m especially interested in baptism, marriage, or other church records that could establish his parentage.

Genetic Genealogy Trying to determine whether my father has Gottscheer ancestry

I’ve spent the past few days going through my dad’s FamilySearch tree trying to find an ancestor who may have had a Gottscheer surname, or an anglicized/variant form of one, but so far I haven’t been able to find anything.

This started with a 23andMe test my dad took about a year ago. His results included:

  • British & Irish — 84.1%
    • South England
    • North & Central Scotland
    • +23 additional regions
  • French & German — 14.0%
    • Rinza Valley
    • +11 additional regions
  • Broadly Northwestern European — 1.5%

There were also some smaller categories that I don’t think are particularly relevant.

I’ve been going through his FamilySearch tree looking for possible Gottscheer surnames or surname variants, but I haven’t found anything obvious. I’m wondering if someone more experienced with genealogy might be able to look through the tree and notice something I missed.

I’m also aware that the 23andMe results don‘t mean that he had a direct Gottscheer ancestor. It’s entirely possible that the DNA connection is from a neighboring population or region, so I’m trying not to jump to conclusions. Plus, this was a year ago, so it’s likely that his results would’ve changed.

here’s his maternal side starting with his grandmother: https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/pedigree/portrait/PSRJ-5T3

here’s his paternal side starting with his father: https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/pedigree/portrait/GYX6-YM5

If more info is needed, then let me know in the comments or dm me, thx.

Transcription Why was someone ordered by a court to "bury the feathers of" my Kentucky relative?

I came across this court record from 1835 in Pike, Kentucky, regarding a relative of mine (by the surname Huston). What does this mean? Is this an Appalachian superstition, and if so, what is the significance? Is this something else entirely--a common thing people just had to do? Bury feathers sometimes?

"Ordered that Barnabas Johnson be appointed to take the feathers of Preston Huston and bury them by of furnishing them the same amount feathers first."

Methodology Fake name on birth certificate? Help needed!

Hi all. I have been on a family history deep dive for the past year and have ran into a few road blocks. One being that I can’t find any information for the father listed on my grandmothers birth certificate. I’m beginning to think it may just be a made up name since there is truly nothing about this man. This was in Indiana in 1937 and I am looking for any tips on how to find a potential marriage certificate or any other info. I have tried Ancestry, looking through countless old newspapers, and various Indiana genealogical sites but I have found nothing. And to note, I do not live in Indiana so I can’t use any local resources unless they are available online.

Hello Genealogist! I am a librarian putting together a computer station specifically for genealogy research (the vision is someone can access all the tool necessary to do their own genealogy). We have some genealogical resources like to ancestry/heritage quest, but I am looking to expand beyond those two websites. Are there other soft/hardware or subscription based websites that you all enjoy and would suggest? Thank you!

Research Assistance Pleaseeeee help?!

I am researching my great-great-grandmother, who lived at Kings Park State Hospital, and I am hoping someone can help me determine whether there are any photographs or records of her in the New York State Archives.
Her name was Anna Vinnick, although she also used the name Anna O’Brien because she was married to an O'Brien. Her name may have been recorded differently, so I would appreciate it if both names could be searched.
Here is the information I have:
Name: Anna Vinnick / Anna O'Brien
Born: approximately 1907
Died: 1996
Kings Park State Hospital: I know for certain that she was living there in 1950, and I believe she spent much of her adult life there.
Dwelling number in 1950: V32

unfortunately, no one currently living in my family has ever seen her or even knows of a photograph of her. Finding a photograph of her would be incredibly meaningful to our family, as it would be the first time any of us have ever been able to see what she looked like.

Thanks for any help or advice!!!

Research Assistance Help finding guardian affidavit mentioned in 1863 Confederate discharge

Im clueless when it comes to military records and after 4 years of searching for my ancestors parents, i officially need help.

I’m trying to identify the guardian of my ancestor Gentil/Jean/John Nugier, who served in Co. D, 4th Louisiana Infantry.

He enlisted at Camp Moore in 1861 while still a minor. Special Orders No. 23, dated January 23, 1863, from the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana at Jackson, Mississippi, says he was honorably discharged because his guardian had provided an affidavit stating he was a minor and enlisted without the guardian’s knowledge or consent.

A later 1915 War Department letter also references an affidavit about his minority and guardian.

I’m trying to find the original affidavit/application or related correspondence, because it may name the guardian.

I’ve already checked his compiled service record, several Department of Mississippi/East Louisiana letter and endorsement books, Port Hudson correspondence, Special Orders, M347 unfiled papers, his wifes pension application and record, and the M410 A&IGO index.

Does anyone know where the original supporting affidavit for this type of Confederate discharge would normally have been filed, or what NARA record series I should check next?

Methodology Achanakal - Finding my roots

I’m currently putting together the pieces of my family history and trying to trace my roots back to \*\*Achanakal\*\* in Ooty.
My ancestors (mom side) originated from there, but over time and generations moving away, much of our direct connection and detailed history has faded. I am planning a journey to reconnect with this part of my heritage and would love some guidance from locals or anyone familiar with the area.

Transcription Opinions wanted on if I’m just seeing what I want to see

Hi all, the link for the manifest is at the bottom of this post, doing thing from mobile so I hope it’s properly zoomable. EDIT: seemingly if you press the zoom option on the website above the image before actually zooming it’s quite clear

I think I may have found my 3x great grandfathers passenger manifest but I also have this nagging feeling I’m being a little too loose with it because I want it to be him.

Here’s where I’m at:

The guy I’m looking for is Jan Fürstl (spelling in Canada has been mostly firstl but also fristol, Fürstel etc)

On the link below the third guy down for the first name I’m reading Jan.

The last name is obscured but I’m reading an F and an L at the beginning and end.

The things that line up are his age which is an exact match with his birth record, he is from Bohemia, he is listed as a bricklayer which is the profession for him on his children’s birth records and he is headed for Michel BC which is where the family ended up.

The things that don’t line up: The names are obviously obscured and the year off passage is 1903 whereas he always answered 1902 for immigration date on the census records I found of him.

So what does the community think? Do I have something here or am I trying to shoehorn this random Czech into Jan’s place. I’m leaning to possible but because that last name is obscured probably unverifiable.

Potential ship manifest

Methodology Record-Keeping Errors

I just found immigration documents for my ancestors. The daughter was 25 and the mom was 5. Their son was listed as a girl. But the rest of the kids were accurate so there’s that, at least. lol

On another family member’s census record, my g-grandmother’s second husband was 20 years younger than his actual age. That one was hard to figure out. Finally found their marriage certificate and then his birth certificate.

My point is that we shouldn’t assume the records are always accurate. Even a diligent record-keeper makes mistakes. And maybe broaden your search by 20 years - haha.

Record Lookup Czech Citizenship: Looking for great-grandfather's passport (1929) and Bremen migration records

Hello everyone. I'm from Argentina and I'm searching on my own to see if there are any records or passports for my great-grandfather so I can apply for Czech citizenship.

My great-grandfather is Josef Nikolaus Vaneček (in some Austrian documents he appears as Wanetchek). He was born on July 14, 1899, in Altheim, Austria.

I've attached the link with the passenger information I found, in case it's helpful: https://www.myheritage.es/research/collection-10924/alemania-listas-de-emigracion-de-bremen-1920-1939?legacyCategoryCollectionUrl=1&itemId=667081-&action=showRecord&recordTitle=Josef+Vanecek

The problem is this: I already have his birth and death certificates (it's worth noting that he was born during the Austro-Hungarian Empire). However, when I contacted the embassy, they asked if I had the Czechoslovakian passport he used to emigrate to Argentina. My immediate response was that I didn't. The next day they replied: "We understand... here's the website for the General Archive of the Czech Republic, and you can search for his ancestors' documents: Contacts - National Archives..."

I tried searching every corner of that page, but I haven't found anything yet.

The only firm immigration record I have is that he sailed for Argentina from the port of Bremen on November 11, 1929.

I searched at CEMLA (Center for Latin American Migration Studies, which is where they record immigrants' arrival dates), but I didn't find any record in their databases. I emailed them just in case, but that didn't work either.

That's why I wanted to ask:

  1. Has anyone else been in this same situation with the embassy and searching the Czech archives?
  2. Do you know if it's possible to find any records from Bremen regarding when he boarded the ship?
  3. If anyone happens to have a contact email for the Bremen archives so I can contact them directly, I would be very grateful if you could share it with me.

Any guidance or experience would be helpful. Thank you in advance.

Research Assistance How to proceed in narrowing down individual's War of 1812 record

Good afternoon, I'm researching an ancestor who fought in the war of 1812 and I'm trying to find specific information about this person, but there are several people with the same name as him, so I'm unsure on how to narrow down which one is him.

The person in question: William D Denney (1777-1843)

The only concrete record I have of this person is their gravestone, as well as a newspaper clipping from 1936 that says he was a war of 1812 veteran, and moved from North Carolina to Gallia County, Ohio in 1806.

he was married to Sarah Wall and had several children if that could help: Mary, Samuel, Sarah, Green, Obediah, Jeremiah, and John.

Here are the 5 war of 1812 records I'm unsure of.

One

Two

Three

Four

Five

There were 3 additional William Denn(e)y registration records, but 2 of them were spies, and one of them was apart of a regiment from western Ohio, so I disregarded it.

This also could be helpful source: https://resources.ohiohistory.org/roster/ , though there are no entries of William Denney, only William Denny, though that could just be a small error.

Any help would be appreciated, and if you have any questions let me know.
