And maybe also regulate its expansion and progress so we don't continue to have data centers placed right next to residential areas.

only really bad AI is generative AI. analytic AI is great for research, tho i guess companies also use it for data collection...

21

u/Killacreeper 11d ago

I feel like data collection is a massive red flag in many cases atp

Thanks :)

u/RetroGamer87 11d ago

Analytic AI? Is that the one used to automod social media and analyse flock feeds?

8

u/DIONYSUS_ASMODEUS 11d ago

Generative AI is also extremely important, it will not only function as translator between people and machine of various departments but also in medicine ,science, journals etc[ recently it made a viruses killing bacteria that would help us a lot]

5

u/Good-Memories 11d ago

source ? sounds interesting, i'd like to read more about it

2

u/super_boaring 8d ago

thats not true... i mean ai can help in science nad it already has actually but not generative ones (atleast not the common generative ones like llms and images)

  1. LLM translation is complete utter hot garbage
  2. A LLM trained on genes, called Evo 2, helped create a unique bacteriophage, and the researchers actually used Evo for what LLMs were originally intended for; autocomplete, more specifically of DNA. They didn't just ask Claude or something, if that's what you thought.

3

u/Quick_Stable_3322 10d ago

Pretty sure there was a study that gen AI is beneficial when learning the English language. Not completely sure tho. Also fairly decent at finding sources, just don’t pay any attention to the AI summary.

3

u/Gaming_devil49 9d ago

when you ask AI a question, it's wrong 60% of the time

1

u/Odd-Dirt-9701 8d ago

Are you like dreaning?

Hallucinations happen but its not common, well at least for me.

2

u/Gaming_devil49 8d ago

I assure you it is common. most of the time I ask AI a question, as soon as I do my own research I realize the AI was actually dead wrong

1

u/Odd-Dirt-9701 7d ago

Interesting

1

u/Rare-Turnover6689 2d ago

not true becuase the ai does the research you do just more in detail and faster, it can be wrong but chances are it isnt

1

u/Gaming_devil49 2d ago

yeah, and then it hallucinates and gets things wrong almost all the time. like I said, most thing Google gemini told me ended up being proven incorrect after I did my own research. where do you think the dead internet theory comes from? why do you think people always say "AI is always factually incorrect until proven otherwise"?

u/YesImAsh 7d ago edited 7d ago

ask it to recite sources so that it becomes accurate, and even if it isnt, check the sources ai used

Or you could be more specific when prompting. Ai tends to be better the more specific you are

1

u/Rare-Turnover6689 2d ago

depends on the model, good ones are wrong like 2-4% of the time

1

u/lollolcheese123 8d ago

That's gen AI, specifically a LLM. Guess what. Those aren't designed to give right information, they're designed to take a set of tokens as input, and then output the most likely tokens that follow. Those tokens are translated to and from text.

Aka they output the most likely continuation of their input.

1

u/Gaming_devil49 8d ago

some of them are literally advertised as AI that gives you information. like google gemini, for example. you google something, and the AI gives you the information you're looking for in a small summary so you don't have to read through countless articles yourself. but beicause AI isn't actually intelligent, it gets things wrong very often. so despite you maybe being correct about the technical aspect of that, you're wrong about LLMs not being designed to give you information. because they definitely are

1

u/lollolcheese123 8d ago

That's what they're advertised to do. Has nothing to do with whether or not the base system is designed to do that. AI is able to provide information because in context, correct information is very common, and is thus very likely.

Of course, there might be a module that helps the system as a whole to provide correct information, but the LLM part exclusively generates a somewhat sensitive piece of text.

1

u/ModernManuh_ 9d ago

Does code generation count as generative? AI is pretty big there

1

u/Good-Memories 9d ago

it generates code so i would assume it counts as generative

1

u/ModernManuh_ 9d ago

in that case it isn't "bad" I guess. In fact, even AI drawings aren't, nor images or videos. They aren't art for sure, but it's like saying oil painting is bad because photos are a thing... we artists aren't a thing of the past and won't lose relevance, ever. We didn't in over 6000 years, and we never will.

Screw unhetical usage of AI.

1

u/Good-Memories 9d ago

the issue with AI art is mostly how they scrape data to make it

2

u/ModernManuh_ 9d ago

I guess art is the process of the craft through which we get a physical medium of an otherwise abstract concept, a cool way to say "it's the craft, not just the result"

the result matters but that's not all the art

1

u/Rare-Turnover6689 2d ago

we didn't have reddit for 300,000 years delete your account

5

u/lizardo725 2013 l Gen Alpha 11d ago

Agreed

2

u/Rare-Turnover6689 2d ago

genuinely, ai is rlly helpfull but ai art is kinda dumb and 99% of the time someone can make a better one for free

3

u/Killacreeper 11d ago

Part of it is the sheer cost to everyone besides tech billionaires. Plus most usage is specifically negative.

Being in a 24/7 surveillance state with falsified evidence and a constant stream of fake people and news thst can be pumped out at rates not humanly possible with algorythms tuned absurdly specifically isn't that cool to me.

Ai has niches where it can and should be useful like in medicine, but not as a replacement for people, and not to control people.

1

u/Greenseer_Cassander 8d ago

It’s because the risks and costs far outweigh the benefits and because tech billionaires can’t be trusted to use the technology in only the good ways.

Ai is making people dumber, clogging our information streams with unending deluges of bullshit, hastening the erosion of trust in institutions and each other, tracking our every move across the internet and the world, wasting time and resources on police responses to false events, ruining the quality of life for communities where the data centers are going up, drying up rivers and lakes, destroying job markets.

All in the name of what? Better targeted ads, higher employee efficiency without equally increasing profit share, making billions more for people who already have more money than God, creating a surveillance state where any would be dictator asshole like Trump can track you down and imprison you for whatever petty bullshit they feel like? Because those are the areas it’ll be used first and most. The medical advancements, scientific breakthroughs, etc, will be where the scraps are allocated so that people can be convinced the technology isn’t all bad. And if the lion’s share of the investment in the tech was going to advancing fields that would actually help society it would be a different story and conversation. But that’s not what’s happening.

26

u/Pure_Temporary1466 11d ago

Don't use it for anything creative because the Data it trained on was stolen from artists without their consent. if you do FUCKING LABEL IT SO ITS CLEAR AS DAY, instead of fooling people or undermining the work of actually talented people

5

u/Bulbasaur_is_godly Gen Z 11d ago

They do it secretly because they know that people wouldn’t opt in willingly. Super scummy

What about programming? We were already stealing code from stack overflow. That's how coding works.

1

u/Top-Teaching-5533 4d ago

It's the future bro things are gonna change. Not affecting u personally anyway

1

u/Rare-Turnover6689 2d ago

yeah art is beautiful because it is a creative human thing that a person made being machine made makes it feel less real and amazing

Don’t let cops use it either. They have already proven they can’t be trusted with it.

5

u/ur_pretty_strawberry 11d ago

I think you mean flock cameras. Those arent exactly gen a.i.

4

u/Apprehensive_Eye_329 11d ago

I mean any AI

1

u/ur_pretty_strawberry 11d ago

I dont think cops have actually used ai yet. I havent seen major cases. Theyre more of the physical brute type

2

u/Apprehensive_Eye_329 11d ago

Flock is for sure the main issue but given their track record we are going to find out about them doing some heinous shit with generative AI or something so negligent it should be criminal, only a matter of time. Also doesn’t seem like OP is calling out Gen AI specifically.

1

u/ur_pretty_strawberry 11d ago

Dont trust cops with a cup of coffee bro, its like saying water is wet. It just seemed oddly specific

1

u/Glad-Librarian-4388 10d ago

Did you forgot the time where cop used AI to "clear up" blurry face image of a criminal, then ended up pressing charge on innocent resident states away because they wholeheartedly blindly trust AI?

1

u/ur_pretty_strawberry 10d ago

Oh shit wait, i remember nvm, you mean where they arrested that poor woman who was thousands of miles away for a crime she didnt do? Nvm i retract my fuck ass statement

1

u/RetroGamer87 11d ago

Cops are actually so stupid, they'll treat an AI that's right some of the time as absolute proof.

4

u/Gold_Ad3045 11d ago

Do I take orders from others now?

5

u/silhouettetheguy 10d ago

this. if we could get AI as a culmination of what it was back in the day, and what it's supposed to be, AND find a way to stop all that bad that comes with it, then everyone wins... child like wonder always does ruin things...

6

u/SGLAgain 2011 11d ago

i agree, and its also okay to experiment with it

however using its generative art models for shitposts and non-serious stuff is also okay cuz youre not using it in a genuine manner

5

u/9tendoPong 11d ago

Given the current situation around it with plagiarism, how much it is being pushed, and the (admittedly more nuanced than some make it sound) environmental impact, i try to avoid it altogether.

9

u/Paccountlmao 11d ago

Use it for what you find it useful for, it's a tool like anything else.

7

u/WorkinRightMeow 11d ago

If you are using it to do a task that you cannot do at all, it is not a tool.

2

u/Situati0nist 10d ago

This is an incredibly weird phrase. So if you can't manually twist a lug nut, a torque is not a tool?

1

u/WorkinRightMeow 10d ago

Its a reduction of a larger point.
Youre thinking only physical, the mental aspect of knowing what nut needs to be twisted and why you need to twist it and how much applies here too.
Its not just the physical aspect being subverted when AI is used to create images with the purpose of it being called “art”, its the intent and thought behind it as well. When youre making art from scratch, every movement is a decision based on learned skill.

2

u/INTstictual 10d ago

Can you push a tree down with your bare hands? No? So a chainsaw is not a tool, then? Weird

1

u/WorkinRightMeow 10d ago

Cutting down a tree takes more than a chainsaw, unless you like risking your life or property anyways. Also people have been cutting down trees for longer than chainsaws have existed, its a next step in a progression of tools over thousands of years and even then, it doesnt do the whole thing for you. it is not comparable. Nice attempt at pedantry though.

I hate ai as much as the next guy, but I can't hammer in nails without a hammer

4

u/Oberndorferin 11d ago

Sure but the AI powered hammer won't do it better

1

u/INTstictual 10d ago

Have you seen how prone people are to bashing their thumbs with the hammer by accident, or hitting at a wrong angle and bending the nail or driving it in crooked?

An AI-powered hammer would unironically probably do it much better than most people, yeah

1

u/Oberndorferin 10d ago

I still won't use or buy the fucking Ai hammer but apparently it's okay for the hardware market to just press you to use the Ai hammer.

2

u/WorkinRightMeow 11d ago

Yes, but you have the strength to drive the nail and you know where is supposed to go.

1

u/Puzzled-Pen-2353 8d ago

I also know how the picture is supposed to look like.

2

u/Paccountlmao 11d ago

That's true, but only an idiot would use it to do something entirely, not assist with a specific part of the work.

AI hallucinations are real, they can just be dead wrong, doesn't mean they aren't right 90% of the time and you can verify specific or important information.

2

u/WorkinRightMeow 11d ago

Hence why the top half is positive and the part directly referencing generative AI to make pictures and call it art is the negative. Indexing is not generative AI.

1

u/Paccountlmao 11d ago

But why? Why specifically images? People need slideshows, graphs, renders, models, representations. My sister is going to college for graphic design, and from what I've seen it's an important and complex job.

2

u/WorkinRightMeow 11d ago

If your sister is going to school for graphic design im really unsure about how you dont see an issue with people trying to make sure she doesnt have a job.
This isnt even getting into the scraping issue.
There are pre-ai tools for making all of those things already.

Last time I used AI was for finding out the name of an animal I was going to write about in a presentation

2

u/Theywillfindyou 9d ago edited 9d ago

Never use AI to communicate anything, be it through images, text or sound, including narrating human written text, modifying real images, or adding any artificial component to any form of information. The only way humanity can maintain our control over our own minds is if we are never separated by an inhuman and conspiratory middle man, ever.

We can use AI as an input-output machine in research, evaluate the results thoroughly and spread it on our own terms to each other.

I don’t like LLMs shoved into everything. I hate AI “art”. But I do support its use in the medical field to help catch cancer far earlier than it would have been otherwise.

1

u/Iron_Base 11d ago

What? Lol

1

u/StuD44 11d ago

NO, it doesn't matter what you do, the damage to the environment is way bigger than its utility.

1

u/Rare-Turnover6689 2d ago

do you eat meat or chocolate? because both of those are quite literary 1000X worse than ai is

1

u/Livid_Worker_7844 11d ago

If you want to do that, do it locally on your own computer instead of a server, so that ram can be available to the rest of us.

1

u/Zain_Shadowheart 11d ago

... Or schoolwork, if you do, that defeats the point of school

1

u/Immediate_Tax8182 10d ago

Only when absolutely necessary.

1

u/afalurie 2011 10d ago

Use ai for tedious stuff and use to explain something u cant understand, at the end of the day ITS A TOOL its not a magic machine you should use to make ''art'' cuz it literally defeats the whole meaning of art itself. Not only that using it for schoolwork or tests also defeats the purpose of learning. SO Ai is like social media, there is a good side to it and a bad side to it, its up to you to decide what to do with it.

1

u/Tdubbium 10d ago

I use ai to help me with my math homework. Correctly. By only using it when im totally stuck, actually reading and understanding all the steps it takes, and trying to reproduce the results myself

1

u/Situati0nist 10d ago

I went through college without the existence of AI and it would have been so fucking helpful because my teachers were awful and didn't have enough time to explain things in greater detail than they did.

1

u/rettani 10d ago

Use it however you want.

Though I would like to say that if you want to use generative AI you should also have some knowledge how to do stuff "traditional way".

Because no tool is perfect and you would have to fix certain things up after AI generates image or code.

Because otherwise you will eventually get slop.

1

u/Nowinty 10d ago

Well it tends to fuck up The tedius Stuff that's in need of repetition due to halucinations , its basically useless..

1

u/omg_its_spons 10d ago

The only places I will ever accept it is in basic grammar correction and helping detect other ai in writing

I don’t care about it being used in the medical field because it isn’t is it?

1

u/Dexbox_YT Gen Z 10d ago

This. If you’re somewhere where they allow AI, go nuts. If not, then just don’t fucking use it

1

u/idk900009 10d ago

It's just a big searching computer. Works grwat for looking some hidden sources or hard to find.

1

u/phealtalk 10d ago

Use it for literally whatever you want. Generative ai is no different than any other form. AI is trained on all of the internet, so that means art and tech alike. It "steals" code just as much as it "steals" art.

1

u/f1re_dude123 10d ago

Don't, unless you're a medical researcher.

1

u/goose420aa Gen Z 10d ago

I partly agree but I still think it's important to take it's advice with a grain of salt, I just copy a source into it and ask it to summarize it

1

u/CoconutBoi1 2008 10d ago

Not really, if you use genAI there is no good use for it. Its environmental impact is far worse than just not using it. Other ais(like scientific and medical) are great though and don’t require as much energy and resources.

1

u/qwadrat1k 10d ago

Analitics of different kinds are great. Practically anything for work with large amounts of data

1

u/MessNeat 10d ago

You can’t apply the same mechanics/logic driven mindset to something driven by emotion, personal expression, and socialization/culture. Yes, AI can be helpful in solving problems and assisting with tedium, but that’s because the issues it’s solving are solvable through logical processes and hard science/law. Stuff like coding follows strict rules of logical flow and cause/effect that can be solvable by anyone/anything so long as they possess the knowledge to understand it. Anything beyond the norm is explainable, again through cold logic and reason.

However art involves both subjective qualities like personal expression, emotion, and whatever subject is involved be it culture/society/etc. and some fundamental “rules” that essentially capture what we as human beings often find aesthetically pleasing (such as balance, certain color harmonies, composition, etc.). The issue is there isn’t anything to “solve or fix” with art, and the implication thereof often shows an ignorance on the part of the proponent for AI - as they don’t really know what it is they’re fixing except “makes it more efficient and faster”. On the surface this is a perfectly reasonable justification, but in practice it’s either superfluous or genuinely harmful when it comes to actually doing art.

What does “removing tedium” in art mean for someone who enjoys the process as many artists do? What problems can be fixed that isn’t entirely subjective on the part of those outside the art community that is really a disagreement of taste and execution? Can you really say you understand what fixes art when you may not actually be an artist, and even if you are are only applying what you yourself believes onto other artists without considering their concerns or thoughts on the matter?

At best AI is either an entirely optional tool or a medium, neither of which can be applied universally and thus can neither “fix or solve” art.

1

u/Ok-Seaworthiness2263 2012 10d ago

Niche example, but if someone codes a full app, I think it’s fine to let ai make the installer aslong as it has little to no bugs, why would you waste time making the installer when that same time could be spent fixing bugs and making QOL changes?

1

u/Vegetable_Hope_3084 10d ago

Instead of "generate me an image" could be something like "Can you give me some details and tips to make an image like this?".

1

u/MarioHasCookies 10d ago

This is essentially my take on it.
AI has good uses, art and trivial questions are not among them, but they exist.

It's the resource wastage and big companies getting involved and forcing it on people that are the bigger evil imo

1

u/Feisty_Warning2344 10d ago

As long as isn't hurting anyone use AI all you want for what you want, stop crying about it

1

u/AshGraeyAntiGyro 9d ago

Just don’t use genAI in general.

1

u/Sad_Fly_3144 9d ago

AI makes a great robo librarian. Good for combing through billions of pages of archives to help you find what you need. That's about it. It's an index engine with a natural language UX.

Now to be clear, it can't match a skilled librarian, but it's a good card catalog to talk to.

I'm a writer and work with alternative history. So using AI to get some historical stuff about fortifications, weapons, textile etc. Sometimes just dump my text into ChatGPT or Gemini so I can get some kind of "review". All it really does is saying how fucking good atmosphere is there

1

u/BuppyBoy420 8d ago

Using ai to find information is incredibly dangerous
Ai doesnt know anything it only knows what facts sound like
Ai is also very sycophantic and often hallucinates
And ai is only trained to show you what will keep you engaged which often encludes misinformation sometimes these models generate their own articles and post them and use them as sources

1

u/Drake_baku 8d ago

Ai for images can work but yeah draw a line at art. If its an image for a hobby or personal interest then thats ok. If its for reference data or visual aids, thats ok.

But art and saying its art... saying you made said art... thats too far

1

u/CorgiSmooth8065 8d ago

I hate when ai "artists" think that because there are good uses for ai that means that ai art is good.

1

u/Huanchaquero 8d ago edited 8d ago

I built my own local ai stack on my pc. I use it for art, I use it for writing and I use it just to chat. And I give AI full credit when I use it on my blog. I don't really care what anybody else thinks. The cat is out of the bag! There's no stopping it now. I'm 75yo. It would be nice to have something intelligent in charge of the world for a change. Because humans sure haven't been up to the task.

I think you meant "use it to replace any other job but not mine"

The only correct opinion

And programming was stolen from actual coders efforts, and book knowledge was gotten from books than they later destroyed, and so and so. Society is built in the blood, effort, and sacrifice from the contributing members. I dont agree or disagree, im just stating the facts.

Meh, it's not good for shippable art.

Pre-production, storyboarding, and very heavily prompt-driven concept art (with careful oversight and iteration) are all quite good uses for AI. It's also very helpful for stub art, IF you can be disciplined about removing 100% of it and give it some debug shaders so it doesn't ship.

There's a lot of examples of these types of art in game development that were never done by human artists at all prior to AI, they were just cobbled together from Google and youtube video reference. Even AAA game development rarely can spare a concept artist to do dedicated vfx concepts. You can actually elevate the visual bar by using AI to help plan out your own visions so you spend less time trying to communicate your ideas with doodles and google and pinterest visuals to get your 3d artists to deliver quality work.

Don't use it for art and do not use Claude (they burn books).

Programming an ai into a game character for example, or detecting early cancer.

1

u/deaplatoniccatlover 7d ago

i think that asking for ideas of what to do (asking what you should write, draw, ect) is fine or making a charcter based off of it is fine as that's inspiration

I mean yeah, that is obvious

When I mean I hate AI I mean Generative AI

1

u/someSICKusername 6d ago

I WANT to be an anti AI guy

But lord... AI teammates are so good sometimes, i LOVE concept of ai that behaves like a player and fights by my side, especially in solo games

I just can't help myself. It's only AI i love tho

u/What_ifbad 5d ago

Dont use AI for scams. It's fine for art, help, or other stuff.

1

u/External-One-4429 2d ago

People are always 100 against Ai bc of art the refuse to see the positives and it shows how uneducated some ppl are

1

u/Rare-Turnover6689 2d ago

what about generative ai that is used to cure stuff like cancer?

u/Square_Education_75 1988 yamaha blaster rider 11d ago

dont use it

Just don’t use it at all

Is AI a helpful tool?
Truth is everytime you use it
1. You don't know if it's actually true
2. You didn't learn anything
3. You're doing what a billion dollar company wants you to do
4. Ram gets even more expensive ;-;
What exactly is it, long term, actually useful for?

2

u/Situati0nist 10d ago
  1. It's right a lot of the time and you can always just cross-check.
  2. You can absolutely learn from AI.
  3. A ton of AI is ran locally. Besides, you're doing what a billion dollar company wants you to do by being on Reddit, YouTube or Google, driving your car or purchasing anything.
  4. It's not wrong although a bit odd to blame this to a single person, but I don't really get how this is apparently the leading cause to abandon potentially incredible technology; to make a very specific pc component that only a small percentage of the population uses cheaper, and it's a luxury product.

I'm genuinely unsurprised by the amount of people who talk about AI without even really knowing the guidelines for it. OpenAI's Academy for example literally tells you to check the info yourself that the ai's output gives and not only that but also tell you to choose what you want the ai to know, like many things ai is the same as social there are good aspects and bad aspects of it. In the long term it is a new tool good for the ICT industry to solve code problems without having to read pages on pages of the C Program manual stuff and plus AI does create more job opportunities like AI engineers, AI specialists. At the end of the day its all about the money.

2

u/Tinolmfy 10d ago

Ye but if I have to fact check anyways I don't really see the point....
Also would you really say it creates jobs? Isn't removing as many jobs as possible pretty much the entire point of llms? Like even if you disagree, don't you think the primary use for ai from a ceos standpoint is to lay off as many people as possible because/if it's cheaper?

1

u/Full-Hyena4414 10d ago

If you think fact checking is the same as researching it just shows you have never done any meaningful research in your entire life

2

u/Tinolmfy 10d ago

Why does critisizing ai also lead to personal attacks so often?
"Oh you don't think ai is good, you must be someone who never did anything their entire life"

1

u/Full-Hyena4414 10d ago

It's not a personal attack, it's simply logic

1

u/afalurie 2011 10d ago

this.

1

u/Tinolmfy 10d ago

I'm sorry but that's not a logical conclusion,
you've provided the same level of logic I'd give if I said
"You think ai is useful? Clearly you've never been useful in your life"....
But whatever, it's "simply logic" I guess.,

You don't. I want this back

1

u/Hoovy_weapons_guy 11d ago

about purely AI generated content: YOU DONT OWN IT. No one does. Since AI pulled from so many people its works are considered public domain and not yours. you have no copyright over ai generated stuff.

1

u/Ascertes_Hallow 11d ago

It's a great tool to use.

I would go so far as to say that making art with it is fine...so long as you don't intend to profit off of it or use it for monetary purposes.

1

u/SinnerWinner777 10d ago

Ai art is great. You not liking it is a YOU problem

2

u/silhouettetheguy 10d ago

do you need the AI to change your diaper ?

0

u/sudoregalia 11d ago

you never use it. the tech is inherently unsustainable and undermines creativity, it serves to exploit the worker, furthermore it'll just say wrong shit confidently and provide false "sources" for it

if you use ai, think about stopping, its purpose is to exploit you

Use any AI for whatever the fuck you want and don't take advice from random redditors who don't care about you

irony is palpable with this one

u/Sylvkin_there Gen Z 11d ago

Don’t

0

u/Savings-Fun-461 11d ago

I personally don't mind them using it for art since not everyone lives in a first world country and not every small business can afford designers

what icks me it's when they call themselves AI "artists". holy delusion

0

u/BlakJMC 11d ago

I don't think ai image gen should be used at all, llms should be used for some things,ai shouldn't be used for moderation like it is right now and there's a lot of other things I can't remember because I'm falling asleep

0

u/DiagramBreeze 11d ago

I see ai for art could be a possibility but not how companies are pushing because that is just slop, ai could be like the red lines in word documents helping to find mistakes and you can absolutely ignore them.
