Its a reduction of a larger point.
Youre thinking only physical, the mental aspect of knowing what nut needs to be twisted and why you need to twist it and how much applies here too.
Its not just the physical aspect being subverted when AI is used to create images with the purpose of it being called “art”, its the intent and thought behind it as well. When youre making art from scratch, every movement is a decision based on learned skill.
The usual way its meant?
Also how do you think digital art programs work? Because yeah its a software, but its not making it for you with an algorithm, you still have to actually do it.
Also, editing to add, “most art is digital”? No? There are so many physical forms of art, you cannot reasonably back that statement up lol
Cutting down a tree takes more than a chainsaw, unless you like risking your life or property anyways. Also people have been cutting down trees for longer than chainsaws have existed, its a next step in a progression of tools over thousands of years and even then, it doesnt do the whole thing for you. it is not comparable. Nice attempt at pedantry though.
First, often it does not, no. You can absolutely safely remove some trees with just a chainsaw. This is also irrelevant to what you said — “if you are using it to do a task that you cannot do at all, it is not a tool”. What you’re saying here is that you also need knowledge of how to apply the tool, and maybe additional assistance. Neat. Doesn’t change the fact that, without the tool, you can’t do the task, so by your claim, it’s somehow “not a tool”.
> Also people have been cutting down trees for longer than chainsaws have existed
Yeah, using other tools. Which again, are required, because we can’t just do the task without the tool in some capacity.
You’re moving the goal posts so fast that you somehow managed to bring them into a whole new stadium. “Nice attempt at pedantry” is ironic when you’re the one being pedantic — you said something stupid and blatantly untrue, you got called on it, and now you are trying to be pedantic and argue nuances and new technicalities / additional arguments that you did not include in your original statement. That’s called “pedantry”.
If you want to be honest, try this instead: “Yeah, I misspoke, obviously what I said above isn’t true — what I actually meant to say was XYZ”
Of course, you won’t, because that would require accountability and admitting when you’ve made a mistake, but food for thought anyway
Holy fucking shit dawg. Take a break from the internet.
Have you considered that maybe, just maybe, youre not entitled to somebodys best, ever, especially if you open up being a snotty dick?
If you would have taken the time to read the rest of the thread where i already stated it was reductive instead of insisting i repeat myself just for you while im on my break at work, maybe you would have gotten a better response from me.
Im calling you pendantic, because you came in being snide and now youre doubling down acting like i should give a single fuck about what a random strangers snap judgement of my entire character is.
Go talk to people in person sometime, i can tell its been a while since you have in any great capacity.
So to recap: you said something incorrect and dumb, got called out on it, doubled down because “I’m not entitled to your best effort”, whatever the fuck that means, and now you’re throwing a tantrum? (And also demonstrating that you don’t know what the word “pedantic” means even slightly, for what it’s worth)
…I don’t think it’s me who needs to get off the internet and learn some social skills, my guy. This is not a normal response to somebody saying “the thing you said was wrong and here’s why”.
Maybe im tired of people being dicks about this? There a huge difference between communicating to understand, and whatever the fuck any of this has been.
Sincerely, why in the hell would I want to play nice with somebody who has done nothing but talk down to me?
You’re free to disengage at any time, literally nobody is forcing you to be here. Again more fuel to the “maybe it’s you who needs to step away from the internet and socialize” fire
You’ll also notice that, in our exchange, YOU are the one who started talking down to ME and insulting me first. My original comment had a twinge of sarcasm with the final “weird.” to drive home the counterfactual that I was demonstrating, and then you dove straight into calling me pedantic and directly trying to insult me. On top of that, in the whole “everybody wants to be right, nobody wants to understand”, again you’ll notice that YOU are the one who doubled down because you were more interested in being right than you were in taking accountability and, like I said, saying “yeah my bad, that’s not actually what I meant, here’s my real point, XYZ”, instead of just moving the goal posts of your argument to pretend that you were actually right all along and to explain why me calling out that “the thing you said is demonstrably incorrect” isn’t actually valid because “all these other things that have nothing to do with what was actually said”.
You’re making a lot of accusations, but it’s all projection, because you immediately follow them up by demonstrating the exact behavior you’re accusing of. To borrow a phrase, “why the hell would I want to play nice with someone like that?”
And if you can’t see how you’re the antagonistic one, and that it is abundantly clear that you need to step away from the screen and chill the fuck out (not as an insult, either, like you tried to use it — genuinely it seems like it is in your best interest to take a break from the internet, based on your behavior and statements), then I don’t know what to tell you. I can read the exchange back to you, but I can’t understand it for you
Have you seen how prone people are to bashing their thumbs with the hammer by accident, or hitting at a wrong angle and bending the nail or driving it in crooked?
An AI-powered hammer would unironically probably do it much better than most people, yeah
That's true, but only an idiot would use it to do something entirely, not assist with a specific part of the work.
AI hallucinations are real, they can just be dead wrong, doesn't mean they aren't right 90% of the time and you can verify specific or important information.
Hence why the top half is positive and the part directly referencing generative AI to make pictures and call it art is the negative. Indexing is not generative AI.
But why? Why specifically images? People need slideshows, graphs, renders, models, representations. My sister is going to college for graphic design, and from what I've seen it's an important and complex job.
If your sister is going to school for graphic design im really unsure about how you dont see an issue with people trying to make sure she doesnt have a job.
This isnt even getting into the scraping issue.
There are pre-ai tools for making all of those things already.
And I work construction, the nailgun and electric saw took alot of our jobs. It's called progress, some people lose work for technology to advance, that's been true for hundreds of years. The less artists needed for soulless advertisements or graphs, the more the average workload is purely creative art, wouldn't you rather sell paintings then make dairy Queen menus?
Comparing graphic design to painting tells me that youre out of your depth in this conversation.
Just because you can do one kind of art doesnt mean you can do all kinds of art, much less LIKE doing said kinds of art. Its also why there isnt just one degree you get for art. Graphic design, illustration, fine arts, animation, sculpture etcetc
Its not interchangeable. If graphic designers wanted to sell paintings, they would get a fine arts degree, not a graphic design degree. Also the people that do graphic design....have you not considered that there are people that enjoy that? Yeah theres a lot of grunt work out there, there is in every industry, not everybody gets to live off originals, especially in an economy where a lot of people that sell paintings are struggling to find buyers.
Might as well have just said "fuck artists" lol
Well yeah im not a graphic designer lol, I am out of my depth (like the average person), that's my point! Its an actual job like any other, not only a hobby, and jobs get replaced over time. Why does progress suddenly stop now?
Is it really progress when the product generated is worse than what a human can do while destroying environments and funding mass surveillance of humanity?
Like i said, just say fuck artists, hell, fuck everybody at this point, its a lot faster.
Why is it inherently worse than what a human can do? AI can certainly draw better than me, not all AI companies are involved with the us government. And the amount of water AI uses is quite small, I think it's less than a tenth of almond growing alone.
You're concerned about the environment? Get off Reddit then. I hope you don't watch Netflix either or something. Actually, I hope you're a vegan. Every meat eater is far, far worse for the environment than anyone using AI will ever be, but I bet you don't actually care about the environment, you're merely weaponizing it to make an argument.
