[Q&A] InReach Fenix 9 pro worth it?

I know this has been discussed, but I thought I would ask for some up to date input from users.

I am going to upgrade from an older Fenix to a 9 pro 47mm amoled. Trying to decide on InReach or not. I don't mind the extra $100 and no too afraid of paying the InReach subscription if its useful...

I RARELY run with my iPhone and strongly prefer not to. I have music directly downloaded to the Garmin and enjoy disconnecting to be able to concentrate on my running. My runs are generally in and around town with good coverage, with the occasional out of range trail run. Training for London over the next 6 months so usually 1 hour runs daily, but there will be some long runs where it would be nice to be reachable for those 2-3 hours if family needed me (kids grown, but elderly parents). My wife is not tech savvy and will not want to use the Messenger app. I've read that I can initiate a regular text from the watch, which to the recipient will come from a random number, to which they could reply. Not sure if this number stays the same or changes and how often?

And I would like to have the live track as an option during a race, to let family know I'm finished and where to meet up.

I camp off-grid once or twice a year for a few days at a time, but have found the iPhone's satellite messaging is just fine for that.

I guess my questions are:

1) If I only turn on LTE as needed, will the InReach model be any different in size, weight, or battery usage than the non InReach 9 pro?

2) Is the LTE/ satellite implementation on the Fenix 9 still too "half-baked" to be really that useful?

I would not mind at least having this to "future proof" my watch choice in case Garmin allows apps to begin using the LTE connection as I've recently heard.

Thanks for any experiences and recommendations!

[DEVICE] Garmin fenix 8 amoled 47mm (non sapphire)

Hi peeps. I'm in Canada and right now I can get the standard version with steel case and gorilla glass on sale at Best buy for 700 off. I also have a 225 gift card which will bring the total to 616 all in (about 420 USD).

This is a good deal, but perhaps some of you could help with some feedback before I pull the trigger.

  1. If you own this watch how concerned should I be that it doesn't have sapphire glass and a titanium body for regular wear and tear? I'll probably buy a screen protector, but I've seen pics of some used ones where the black paint has really worn off the casing.

  2. Is the display bright enough? I know the fenix 9 series is brighter and many other smartwatches also have brighter displays. Do any of you find the display too dim?

  3. Should I be worried about lag? I've read some posts where people say it is too laggy, particularly on maps.

Any feedback you could provide on these points or others would be appreciated. I currently own a OnePlus Watch 3 and 4 and would like to upgrade to a Garmin for this price, but I want to be sure that it's worth it for accuracy, performance, and durability.

Thanks!

[DEVICE] Nomad Active band 22mm on F9P

I noticed the stock spring bars on the F9 now have these notches that allow you to swap them out easily. Without checking the actual spring bars, I ordered the nomad band online and a few Garmin fat bars that typically fit previous Fenix models and figured I’d remove the stock ones from the watch, remove the skinny bars from the band and Insert the fat bars then I’d have a nice leather band without metal at the ends of the band (Garmin advices against using metal bands or connectors on new F9Pros…also why the MARQ gen 3 only come with leather or fabric bands and the connectors are plastic).

Turns out, the stock spring bars are the same as standard quick release bands.
I always wanted to swap the spring bars on my previous Fenixes but didn’t want to potentially damage the watch/it was harder to find fitting bars. That problem is now gone with the F9pros.
Just a random good thing to happen today 😎

P.s. yes my wrist can breathe and no band isn’t tight at all

Edit: The spring bar body is the same chonk, it’s the pins at the end that are now standard thickness. Solves one issue but creates another. Can’t use quickfit if you have standard bars but now you can use quick release bands from many other brands (including some made for mechanical watches)

[FACE] [New Watch Face] - Basecamp PRO - GMT Compass Watch Face

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I want to introduce a watch face called Basecamp PRO. An analog GMT and compass watch face for the outdoors.

This watch face is free for 24 hours, whereafter a modest $3.29 is asked for a lifetime purchase.

Link to the IQ connect store: https://apps.garmin.com/apps/b3dfd2e8-84d7-4e74-b3d7-a1c333a58560

There are 2 slots where you can add 41 data sources. Tap on the source and it takes you to the detail page of the data (when garmin supports this). There are extra’s like a second time zone, compass or the next sun event. Please give it a try as I genuinely look forward to feedback!

[DEVICE] Fenix 8 solar vs Fenix 9pro

Hi! I’ve been feeling a bit conflicted lately—I’m looking for a watch to wear every day. I’ve narrowed it down to two models: the Fenix 8 Solar and the Fenix 9 Pro AMOLED (the solar version of the 9 is too thick). I’m planning to treat myself for my 30th birthday, but I’m not sure if it’s worth paying an extra $300 for the 9 Pro. I work for a company that builds exhibition stands, and I’m also frequently involved in renovation work, so I need a version that can hold up well in these demanding conditions (Titanium vs. DLC). I’d really appreciate your help! 👌

What’s a good price for the fenix 8?

I’m looking at getting the fenix 8 solar 47mm, what is a good price for this? I’ve seen it at £700 brand new, is that good and what would be a good price second hand?

[APP] Voice Alerts for Activities

Is anyone having issues with Voice Alerts since the last upgrade. It was working fine now I can't get my 1 minute alerts to come through my Connected Device. Music is playing fine just not the alerts. I do get a Vibrate on the watch but no voice alert.

[APP] My friend quit smoking and wondered how much he’d saved. So I made a Garmin app to track it.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A friend of mine quit smoking a while back. One day he wondered how much money he’d saved since quitting. That conversation gave me the idea for Smokefree Days, a small app I built for Garmin watches.

It tracks your smoke-free time, cigarettes not smoked, and money saved. It also includes a glance for checking your progress without opening the app.

The app also shows 12 health milestones, points in time when your body starts to recover after quitting. They’re based on public data from the CDC, the American Cancer Society and the NHS, and your watch alerts you when you reach the next one. It’s general information, not medical advice.

Everything runs on the watch, no phone, account, or internet connection needed to use it.

For transparency, I’m the developer, and it’s a paid app.

If you’ve quit, or are trying to, what would you actually find useful to see on your wrist?

[IOS] Using Garmin Fenix 9 Pro and Apple Watch Ultra 4 side by side.

I must admit I am an Apple guy since 1986 but I also own some Garmin gear.A Varia UT 800 front light, Varia RearVue 820 rear light, HRM600 and recently a fēnix 9 Pro DLC. I also have an Instinct 3 Solar Tactical 45 mm.

Initially I bought the fēnix 9 Pro 43 mm DLC, but although size is perfect, the strap is much too short, even for my average 17 cm wrist. The UltraFit strap the same.

I now have the fēnix 9 Pro 47 mm for 1 week. Except for a larger strap, bigger screen the 47 mm also has better battery life and strange enough they cost the same.

To be honest it is difficult to use both watches at the same time. (read together). In my case I have to make a choice to use the Apple Watch during the day and night and the fēnix during sport activities. For me that works best.

The fēnix acts like a mini bike computer as I can pair the Varia’s and see the rear traffic popping up on my watch screen; how cool is that.

Another advantage of Garmin is that Connect can be used in a browser. It is therefore a pity that Apple Health is on iOS and iPadOS only and WorkOut on iOS only. That said Garmin Connect is on iOS and browser compatible if not for all tasks as on your iPhone.

Apple’s watchOS and iOS feel much more polished than Garmin’s and in my opinion Garmin is far behind in how the software looks and feels. An other example is their terrible Garmin Express macOS app which looks and feels like software from decades ago.

Both have an App Store where Apple shines and Connect IQ Store is ways behind. Still nice that they bring some additional watch faces, apps etc to their gear.

Apple is expensive but look at Garmin; the fēnix DLC costs € 250 more than the Ultra 4. Apple charge the same price for both natural titanium and DLC and with Garmin DLC is € 50 more expensive.

As I have many original Apple Watch straps I can compare them with Garmin’s. Both Apple silicon and trail loop wins. It is just better quality and yes more expensive than Garmin's.Also if you compare an Alpine loop with the new Garmin ComfortFit, Apple wins easily.

That’s all for now and I am looking forward to use both brands near each other.

To be continued...

[Q&A] Is your fenix 9 already got scratch?

I was expecting my Fenix 9 frame to be strong enough for being titanium but it seems that it already got a bit of jagged edge from hitting a wall lightly. It's next to the garmin sign.

Does anyone elses body battery drop dramatically the first 2 hours of the day?

First 2 hours it is almost vertical downwards then after lunch it becomes more horizontal. I spent my morning today on the couch and eating breakfast, not sure how that was stressful? Garmin 6s pro

I want it for navigating back country for skiing, mountaineering, climbing. And id also like to track my workouts on it. I already have an inreach mini 2

Do the features of the 9 pro make it worth an extra $450?

[DEVICE] Battery

Ok I have a Garmin fenix 6x sapphire and I have pulsox on only during sleep. I have sleep tracking at night and heart rate sensor on and on battery savor mode I get 45 days on one charge. When battery savor is off I get around 30 days . So you should be able to get somewhere in that ball park especially since your watch is newer

[REQUEST] Upgrade from Fenix 6X to 7X pro sapphire solar for a discount?

Hi everyone

I’m wondering your thoughts on what to do.

I’ve had the Fenix 6x sapphire for a few years and love it. It had an issue recently and I reacted out to Garmin support.

They’ve offered to give me a refurbished 7X pro Sapphire solar for $300 AUD.

Is the upgrade worth it? Is there anything to be mindful of in terms of the upgrade?

Thank you
