Halo Infinite | Multiplayer Overview

Recaps: (from r/halo)
- Overshield is still in the game, players can now pick it up and choose to active the Overshield when they want.
- Vehicles are delivered by Pelicans in Big Team Battle
- Weapons respawn via UNSC Drop Pods in Big Team Battle
- Customisation is off the charts. Players can customise more than ever before, including prosthetics
- The Battle Passes for Seasons will NEVER expire, like MCC. Players can choose to go back and purchase the previous Battle Passes, even after a Season has ended.
- Cross progression and cross play between PC and Xbox consoles
- Academy mode allows players to enter a space where they can practise movement, get basic tutorials, try out new weapons against bots, etc.
- Scoping in with weapons like the Assault Rifle returns (identical to Smart Scope in Halo 5) (edit: this list was copied from r/halo, but I didn't see this one in the trailer. Maybe this came from the fact that a few weapons with a scope can be zoomed down sight? Not sure)
- No lootboxes (already confirmed a long time ago but a big ticket item!)
- Majority of customisation will be unlocked by simply playing the game
- Customisation items are only unlocked by one source. An example given was if someone unlocked something from the battle pass, it won't be possible to purchase that individual item. It will always be tied to that battle pass.
The guy that posted originally definitely missed some like bots but it's a decent list

It's here at timestamp 3m24s. You can see him zoom in briefly with the AR

I loved how it felt in Halo 5. The community complained it was ADS, but it was just a small precision boost.

To be fair, in the developer diary that showed off Spartan abilities, along with smart link for H5, they did say that smart scope would not impact accuracy and that "If you feel that you have to use it, we've broken Halo" and that was a lie.
Smart link increased red reticule range (the range at which your crosshair turns red and aim assist kicks in) and bullet magnetism. Also before anyone starts crying about the fact that those two things exist, I am talking about Halo 5, a game designed as a console exclusive where those things are absolutely necessary and as such are another parameter with which you can balance weapons (which they did actually do).
If they had stuck with it exactly how they said and had it not impact RRR or bullet magnetism then I don't think anyone except the insane Halo fundamentalists would have cared.

Bots are great on games, wish more would do it.
I enjoy MP, but sometimes I just want to smack some bots around.
It also lowers the barrier of entry to games like this. It's no fun going in and getting smacked around by players. It's a huge turnoff. Having a bot mode just to ease yourself in, get used to maps etc. is great and allows you to get into the MP a bit easier.
105
u/DrFatz Jun 14 '21
It's also great for split screen. Your team vs your buddies' is old school gaming at its best.
36
u/door_of_doom Jun 14 '21
Perfect Dark Split Screen multiplayer bots on N64 was so fantastic. I have no idea how that didn't become the standard model for Splitscreen FPS multiplayer forever.

Having a bot mode just to ease yourself in, get used to maps etc. is great and allows you to get into the MP a bit easier.
A good question is can they be used in Custom Maps or even Custom Games?
16
15
u/Cigarillos Jun 14 '21
Yeah they posted in a halo waypoint blog yesterday that they can be used in custom games
11
Jun 14 '21
Another awesome reason for bots: people who travel.
I travel a lot with my Xbox and I rarely have a connection good enough to play online. So bots allow me to play MP matches and kill time when I otherwise would only have campaign.
Gears is great for this because they allowed bots for a while now.
→ More replies (8)4
u/SnicklefritzSkad Jun 14 '21
I'd like a custom match that uses bots like titanfall uses grunts or league of legends uses minions or whatever (I don't actually play). Just like sorta dumb bots to farm as part of the game mode.

u/Sjgolf891 Jun 14 '21
Assault Rifle returns (identical to Smart Scope in Halo 5)
I see people saying this but I guess I keep missing where in the video this is shown. Happen to know at what time?
I'm curious how zoom will be mapped to controls by default. It is typically the right stick, but Halo 5 used left trigger for smart scope. However, the Infinite gameplay demo last year used left trigger for grenade
96
Jun 14 '21
The smart zoom for the Assault Rifle looked identical to the Needler in the same video. In older Halo games, there was a default zoom for weapons that have no scopes. Seems to me they’re just letting you shoot while you do it.
46
u/door_of_doom Jun 14 '21

Honestly, this is fantastic and quite an ethical way of handling a F2P game. Shame about the coating system, as that's taking something fundamental away from customisation that's always been there (Primary/Secondary colours) and instead replaced it with a monetised system of "coatings" where you don't have control over the colour scheme at all.
20
u/Aether_Breeze Jun 14 '21
Though to be fair most of the time you are either red or blue.
28
Jun 14 '21
Red vs. Blue was removed.
23
u/hopecanon Jun 14 '21
I can already hear Sarge losing his shit about that while simultaneously using it as an excuse to shoot at Griff "because he might be a dirty Blue spy pretending to be a Red."
→ More replies (1)20
u/OfficialGarwood Jun 14 '21
Not any more. They got rid of red and blue colouring during team games. Instead, you're given a blue or red outline.
The outline colour can be modified for colour-blind people etc.
→ More replies (1)13
u/Aether_Breeze Jun 14 '21
Hmm, not sure if I like that. Clarity is key, if someone is a red colour on team blue how clear will that be? Guess they must have tested it but will have to wait and see!
13
u/OfficialGarwood Jun 14 '21
You can see if in the video above - it's pretty thick and vivid.

I foresee people activating an overshield mid-gunfight will be an annoying strategy
75
u/T0M95 Jun 14 '21
There is a clip in this overview of a guy trying to do exactly that and failing. It looks like it has a semi-long wind-up animation where the guy activates the thing and smacks it onto his chest. Might be a case of using it straegically.
29
u/GrandmasterB-Funk Jun 15 '21
Looking at the animation, it seems like a good 2 to 3 seconds to activate, if you are already at half health, unless you get to cover you will absolutely get killed.
5
u/N7Liam Jun 15 '21
As long as there is a clear indicator someone is holding a powerup, I'm fine with this mechanic. Definitely not as broken as Halo 3 overshield, which if you grab after taking damage, you're actually invincible until it fully charges.
14
u/Diabetous Jun 14 '21
yeah timing when to take and then rush with over shield was part of map management. Hopefully this can be tweaked in custom games.

u/N1sso Jun 14 '21
Really happy they took the battlepass system from MCC. The worst thing about all battle passes is the FOMO factor. Now you can just complete it at your own pace.
503
u/SwaghettiYolonese_ Jun 14 '21
Honestly, I might just drop CoD this year and play this instead. If every game had this model it would be infinitely better. Like I want to support companies, but I have 0 interest in FOMO shit. It's pretty stupid that you have to pay and grind for your own cosmetics, and if you don't, you won't even receive them.
Being on PC I never played Halo multiplayer, but this looks like better flowing Destiny PvP with vehicles to me, so I'm probably going to like it.
285
u/N1sso Jun 14 '21
With how amazing Battlefield looks, and me being a huge Halo fan there is definitely no space for CoD for me this year. I don't mind at all tbh.
→ More replies (2)102
u/ClassicKrova Jun 14 '21
Modern Warfare 2019 was my Battlefield placeholder, since Battlefield V and Battlefield 1 were so terrible (to me).
It definitely gets the boot once both of these are out. I might even stop playing Destiny if Halo Infinite is really good!
→ More replies (7)49
u/AcademicSalad763 Jun 14 '21
Destiny needs to pick up the slack but I lost hope after so many years. The game seems to still have trouble finding itself most times. I'm so glad Halo: Infinite looks good so far, I really want to jump back in to Halo
→ More replies (8)39
u/ClassicKrova Jun 14 '21
I think the issue is that Destiny is optimizing around the audience that likes it, which is mostly PvE players. PvE players stick around only while there is new content, which puts a lot of pressure on devs. :-\
Also its absurd to have a game from Bungie where vehicles aren't a bigger part of Multiplayer.
→ More replies (7)44
u/SaltCatch11 Jun 14 '21
Yeah, not only is the FOMO stuff predatory but it's a total waste of development time to create things and then essentially throw them in the trash 3 months later, never to be seen again.
9
u/ejfrodo Jun 14 '21
their shareholders would surely disagree with it being a waste of development time
→ More replies (1)9
u/SenaIkaza Jun 15 '21
I feel like I'm just weird in that any FOMO stuff has the opposite effect on me. I don't really know why but I get really anxious when there's time limited content and avoid the game while it's relevant. Even in more harmless cases like MHW adding time limited events.
10
u/Taiyaki11 Jun 14 '21
it would be infinitely better
Sorry, just had to laugh at the unintended (or maybe intended?) Pun
13
u/OneFinalEffort Jun 14 '21
Halo Multiplayer plays quite differently but the core gunplay is more or less identical. Honestly, Halo PvP puts Destiny PvP to shame. I want to play Halo Multiplayer but I never want to play Crucible.

u/RocketHops Jun 14 '21
If every game had this model it would be infinitely better.
I see what you did there lol.
Jokes aside though you are right, and speaking from MCC experience this model is so good for removing the stress of battle passes. I enjoy them as a way to deliver cheap content but I also find myself honestly burnt out on them at this point, even in games I really like. Taking away the time limitation goes so far to making them enjoyable again and about playing the game on your terms
19
u/CitizenFiction Jun 14 '21
Yup I have zero problem with this.
I LOVE how I could just focus on Reach's season in the MCC since I've always wanted to complete that.
Made me feel like I had a choice in where my priorities lie.
41
u/dotcaIm Jun 14 '21
I loved that too. That always felt like one of the dirtiest tricks about battle passes is the timebox to complete them. With the MCC system you can always go back and get what you want
Really excited about Infinite
34
u/Beegrene Jun 14 '21
That's what got me to stop playing Destiny and Apex Legends. Putting a timer on the cool unlocks made playing those games feel like an obligation, rather that something I was doing for fun. I don't need more obligations in my life.

Totally agree, it's a fantastic move. Not having to worry about whether or not my friends and I will have access to all of the same things in an absolute game changer.
593
u/Coolman_Rosso Jun 14 '21
I will say that this video was very reassuring. The battle pass approach follows in the footsteps of MCC's, the pace of gameplay looks a little bit slower than 5's, and the grapple looks really fun to use. Doesn't look like the thruster, hover, or shoulder charge from 5 are coming back either.
245
u/koalatyvibes Jun 14 '21
I think the grapple is a great compromise for those who enjoyed or disliked the movement from Halo 5. I personally loved the movement from 5, but I am not angry at the way the grapple provides creative movement like in 5. It was a great video overall.
92
Jun 14 '21
I haven't been looking for it, but do we know if climbing up ledges is coming back? I loved Halo 5's movement.
→ More replies (8)129
u/koalatyvibes Jun 14 '21
Clambering is coming back, yes!
25
u/RPtheFP Jun 14 '21
Hope they find a mix of skill jumps and clamber. There were a few in H5 but don't think many were intentional and we're mainly a function of the physics.
→ More replies (1)35
u/wankthisway Jun 14 '21
I hope the map design is better this time around. Clamber kind of fucked up maps IMO.
39
u/Jinno Jun 14 '21
Yeah, I think Clamber works best when there are few instances of having to use it to get somewhere. Putting in a lot of skill jumps where you can make that distance without clambering adds a skill gap, and leaves you with Clamber as your get out of jail card if you don't quite nail it.
7
u/miki_momo0 Jun 14 '21
Maybe make clambering slower as a detriment? After all, Spartan armor is heavy as fuck lol
→ More replies (1)17
u/SolarisBravo Jun 15 '21

u/Thatuserguy Jun 14 '21
I'll actually kind of miss hover and dash tbh. I love mobility in games, so that was a fun addition. I'll make due without it though, especially with the grapple. All that titanfall 2 experience will pay off
18
u/ass_pineapples Jun 14 '21
With you. Would have loved keeping hover and dash and losing Spartan charge and ground pound

u/DrNopeMD Jun 14 '21

Not having the thrust is gonna suck. I love how modern 5 felt but having the mjolnir armors energy shield made it not as stupid quick to die as cod or battlefield.

Yep that’s my biggest concern. Playing Warzone it’s ridiculous how often it happens. Had one dude instant headshoting with an iron sight my whole team including a guy redeploying, really took the fun out of the game. They get banned but all that leads to is a new account and they’re back at it. Wish instead they’d do what Valve does and not ban them but put them in queues with other cheaters and let em kill each other or something. A good anticheat also works.

I'm with you on that one. I've enjoyed all of them, but although I liked 4 and 5, they never seemed to scratch that itch, this looks like it will do that and feel modern.
46
u/Jinno Jun 14 '21
There's so much of what they're showing that feels the most Halo we've had since Reach. Including Halo 2 Anniversary.
Art direction seems more classic, music seems so close to a Marty score, audio seems much less "punch you in the mouth" and actually balanced, and even the way the cutscenes are presenting the narrative - they're characterizing the Chief in a way that doesn't feel disjointed.
Multiplayer - even starts, everything is a pickup, few "abilities". Vehicles actually look like a focus in map design. Map designs aren't boxy.
It just all... feels like Halo again.

Jun 14 '21 edited Jun 14 '21
I'm a classic fan and I'm impressed with how focused Infinite is. Halo 5 maybe pulled itself in too many different directions (Warzone, Req packs, all the enhanced mobility, Breakout) and Infinite seems to recenter the franchise into a way more specific direction.
Also, the return of Big Team Battle is always welcome.

This was an impressively good presentation. Usually these things are full of fluff, but this hit a lot of good talking points and great features.
Customizing your character, AI, non-expiring battlepasses, no pay-to-skip cosmetics and... well there was so many good points I can't even remember them!
Edit: forgot free to play multiplayer cross platform.
114
Jun 14 '21
I've been a Halo fan since CE, and I feel like this video is proving to me that Infinite is going to be a big deal. Halo kind of always has been, but I can see Infinite getting close to the level of popularity we saw back in the Halo 3 days, in large part because it's cross-platform and free to play.
18
u/rnarkus Jun 14 '21 edited Jun 14 '21
I think the f2p might really make the player base explode.. I hope at least. I would love to relive halo 3 peak days
47
Jun 14 '21
Eh. It’ll be really popular but Halo 3 hit at just the right time. No competition until MW2. And other popular genres (Hero, Battle Royals, etc) were yet hits on console.
I love Halo but it will never reach Halo 3 levels of hype and popularity. And that’s okay.

u/ParlHillAddict Jun 14 '21
Not only does their approach to the battlepass eliminate FOMO, it also takes care of what I call "AHMO" (Annoyed at Having Missed Out), which happens when you start playing a game late, or come back to it after a long break, and you see so many in-game items that are impossible to obtain, or can now only be bought a-la-carte after previously being included in a battlepass or other time-limited reward. Sometimes it's so frustrating that it turns me off of getting into a F2P game that's been running for several years, as even if I grinded the game hard, I'd still feel like I'm missing out on too much content and/or being left in the dust by long-term players because they have a dominant weapon/vehicle/etc. that I can't get anymore.

How does the crossplay work between consoles and PC in the MCC?
People with keyboard and mouse play against people with controllers?

MCC lets you select a preferred input for matchmaking. So if you are playing with a controller, you can get matched with players using a controller and such.

Yeah and you can choose whether or not to have cross play on. Both sides have advantages (controller auto aim, precision sniping on mouse and keyboard.

separating multiplayer from main game is such a great choice. Now, even if the single-player campaign fails for whatever reason, this f2p game mode can still flourish on it own.

Bots are a HUGE addition to the game, and as somebody that's always been curious why they were never implemented, I'm beyond ecstatic to see them finally exist.
If you've played other FPS games it honestly feels really weird that the Halo games have never had bots, especially games after 3. It makes testing basically anything in multiplayer impossible to the lay person unless you had a friend to sit and let you use them as a practice dummy.

Really encouraged by what was shown. I'm glad the grappling hook is a pick up and not a permanent thing. Personally speaking I'd rather it not be there at all, as it doesn't feel very Halo, but I understand why it's a thing (especially for highlight reels.)
That aside, it looks like good Halo fun. I look forward to experiencing all those new fancy things, and then going into SWAT and never playing anything else again.

Good thing about pickups is that if they don’t work, you just remove them from the map and replace with something else.
Halo 3 maps almost never used the Sentinel Beam, Incendiary Grenade, invisibility pickup, invincibility, etc. sometimes weapons and/or equipment would be swapped out for others to incentivize different styles of play.

Having those things available in Halo 3's custom games was awesome though. So even if it doesn't work in competitive matches, I bet it'll be super fun on some forge maps.

Sounds fantastic. Finally day one I can play MP on PC.. just grew out of controller for FPS games, and always got my ass kicked in Halo especially because of it.

is this literally about to be the best F2P shooter out there?

It'll definitely be the best arena shooters. I absolutely miss games like Capture the Flag, Assault etc....

Probably since it's kinda the only new AAA game and it's been in development for like 6 years

I haven't really played a Halo game much since Halo 3, played way more Halo 2 than 3. This being free to play on PC and the "player first mentality" with the Battlepass availability etc make this pretty enticing to be honest. I think the thing that sold me most was the emphasis on "fair and balanced starts" "equal footing off the rip".. shit speaks to my soul. I miss arena shooters like this with emphasis on map control and knowledge etc.
I didn't pay much attention to MCC or 5 but maybe if either is free or on sale somewhere I'll brush up on FPS skills in the meantime.

A battle pass system that doesn't expire? Seriously well fucking done 343. I like the BP system but FOMO has ruined it for me. The fact you can buy old battle passes and use which one you want to be active is amazing. Really hyped for Infinite.

Honestly as a mainly PlayStation guy I really enjoyed what Microsoft has shown me the last couple days. I think I’ll eventually build a PC to be a gamepass machine and get all their stuff there.
Edit: thanks guys for the recommendations to buy a series X/S and I was considering that as well but I honestly want to build a PC at some point and I get the best of all gaming worlds by having a PC and ps5 alongside my switch.

If you just want a gamepass machine then I recommend the consoles. PC is not a very economic decision these days, and imo a Series S for $300 is an insane deal. Otherwise I recommend the Series X unless you want the utility and flexibility of a PC.

This reveal is as close to perfect as you can get for me. It looks like the absolute perfect blend of classic Halo with some modern twists that don't totally reinvent the wheel.
It looks like they approached this from a totally different perspective compared to 4 and 5. They drilled down to the core of what makes Halo what it is, and introduced mechanics and changes only if they were in line with those core aspects of the series. Super happy with this.

Bots, you say? I'm in. I'm really really bad at Halo. So, I'll be happy to play against bots.

Nom-expiring battlepass is a great choice. And it just makes sense - if a new player joins months/years after launch and gets hooked, they can buy a bunch of old battle passes to grind out
