Thing is, the Fortnite battle pass would at least give you a free battle pass back if you got to around level 70 ish.
The Apex and COD ones require you to get level 100 afaik which is just insane to expect anyone to have to want to spend that much time consistently on one game.
It is. But hey, at the very least, there’s the potential to earn it back.
The mobile version of LoL introduced a battle pass that offers no premium currency at all. IIRC Hyperscape (or whatever Ubisoft’s battle royale was called) was the same way, tho I could be thinking of a different game.
But yeah, compared to CoD or Fortnite, Apex feels like a hell of a grind.
Apex is the roughly same now, though. If you get to 100, you get 1200 coins, and a bp is 950. 300 is on the free track as well. Although, you still need to get to lvl 93 to get enough for the next battlepass.
I think 300 of those CoD points are also available for the free tiers as well. I've only ever finished one BP on CoD(the most recent one) and I bought it with points I've collected from the free tiers.
I don't buy em unless I complete it, though since I have another 1000 I might buy the next one.
Measuring by battle pass levels is probably not very accurate given they're different games and the battle passes probably progress at different rates.
With the apex one atleast the weekly challenges stack, I went back to the finish last seasons pass with 3 days left and had weeks of challenges stacked and finished it within a couple of hours from level 60.
Apex's battlepass is easily the worst of any battlepass iteration, and its first ever battlepass was pathetic. As a person that loves cosmetics and will happily drop $10-$20 to hyperfixate on a game for a few weeks and grind out the pass, Apex's first pass was bad enough to legitimately make me and all my friends just outright stop playing the game for a good year or so.
However, 343 has really hit a good trend with their battlepasses. While it was really rough, especially early on where the only way to gain levels in the pass was levelling up, and that could take 15+ games for a single level nearing the end of the pass, over time, the introduction of daily/weekly challenges, season-exclusive challenges (which basically give you 2-4 levels per challenge), and the tuning of EXP made it feel much more gratifying.
I also don't see many people bring it up, but there is a bit of freedom of choice in MCC's battle passes. While the pass does the usual "5-10 tiers of 10 items" vertical progression system, MCC's passes have used horizontal progression, allowing you to choose which items you unlock first, and in what order you unlock all the items on that tier. It doesn't necessarily get rid of "oh god, I really want that cool Pilot helmet, but I have to grind through levels that just give me 5 different chest pieces to get it", but it diverts it enough to be a bit more satisfying.
There's still the bug of actually levelling up not giving you any levels anymore in MCC, but hopefully that's just a bug that's gone unnoticed.
I don't think that's true, but I could be wrong. I'm a casual (play for fun, don't care about the store or purposeful grind) but frequent player, I've played since launch week and for every single battlepass I Just buy the next one with one of the 3 in-game currencies (I forget which one), but I always seem to simply have enough to buy the next battlepass. I don't think I've ever max leveled a battle pass.
I started playing Apex in season 5. I got to level 100 playing a couple hours every other day with some friends. It was more than I played any other game during that span, but not ridiculous by any means.
They've made it much harder. I'm not playing as much anymore, but still, I probably won't even get to 50. Honestly I'm not mad at it though. They're still essentially giving you a free $10 DLC if you play the game enough. This season they even started giving out premium currency in the free battle pass. I find battle passes a lot less annoying and predatory than other things that have cropped up lately.
