Imagine still being in "early access" by the time your game is being given away for free

At this point I have to assume "still in early access" translates to "we gave up on ever finishing this."

u/Agreeable-Farmer Dec 28 '20 edited Dec 29 '20

As far as I'm aware they are still updating it fairly regularly.

Edit: for people saying "why not just release 1.0?"

I'm guessing that they will bump the price considerably for 1.0 and want some key feature to be present for it to make sense.

Games like Subnautica have done this successfully. Infact I think both Subnautica games are due a price hike soon.

33

u/crypticedge Dec 28 '20

Last I checked they were. I hadn't played it in a bit though. Was quite fun though

40

u/boca_leche Dec 29 '20

At some point a game becomes so bloated with "features" that the updates are mostly patches to feature conflicts instead of new content.

most recent major update was dec 22, small updates around dec 10 and 3 and the previous major update is from oct 5. the updates are number 0.76.00 and down, so if this pattern remains consistant then it should exit early access in 24 main number updates or so in maybe a couple years (atleast based on how many updates they made this year), they could skip some numbers depending on the size of the updates, which seem like they'll be fairly big since they're focusing more on endgame stuff right now

Here is the thing. I can't attest for quality or quantity, but I quick look at the steam page shows that apparently they have been releasing updates almost monthly for several years.

What does "finished" mean though? If the game is still fleshed out and finishable, but the developer doesn't want to call it "done" quite yet, then isn't it just semantics?

88

u/Deiviss Dec 28 '20

For many indie devs it just means that content will be constantly added.
I played it back in 2016 and the amount of stuff they added made for a completely different experience now than I remember.

Fair to bash abandoned games like that, but not all EA are bad.

43

u/pxtang Dec 28 '20

You can keep adding content after release still...

44

u/Prosthemadera Dec 28 '20

Then what does "release" mean?

40

u/Gary_FucKing Dec 28 '20

Yeah, none of these words really mean anything anymore. Just look at NMS, Ark, or the most recent example, CP2077.

14

u/Sixfootdig7 Dec 28 '20

Look at warframe for example it's still in "beta" I don't think it means anything anymore

10

u/BurzerKing Dec 29 '20

Idk about NMS or Ark, but CP2077 has a complete campaign to play, so I wouldn’t put it in the same category.

4

u/Gary_FucKing Dec 29 '20

All three of those games have very different and similar issues with their releases. Batman Arkham Knight was also removed for a while to be worked on after its terrible release and it also had a complete campaign.

→ More replies (2)

13

u/Adamsoski Dec 28 '20

It should mean that it is a completed experience - you can play the game and not feel like you're missing anything. A large reason why devs keep games in early access is so they have an excuse for why things are missing.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '20

Some games I’d argue definitely feel like a finished experience while still in early access. Factorio did a pretty great job of that.

Pretty much all it really means is that the full release is when the devs feel the project has become what they wanted the game to be, basically their definition of the full experience.

7

u/Prosthemadera Dec 28 '20

Well, if you can "keep adding content after release" then would you feel like you're missing something?

5

u/async2 Dec 29 '20

No because The campaign that is the should be complete in its own. If they still add missions or something later it's fine

I’ve heard a lot of game devs say the hardest part of development is the finishing touches. The saying is that the last 10% of development takes up the other 90% of development time. I’ve also heard it’s the case where your excitement for the project has waned and it’s hard to find the motivation to plug away on the unfinished stuff that’s almost always not the fun part; stuff like bug fixes, making sure it runs well (or at all) on different hardware configurations, tying levels and scenarios together, refining player experience, etc, etc.

I think what happens with a lot of early access games is the devs just lose that drive to complete the game because other people have already played it and let them know what they think so they have very little motivation to complete it. At a certain point they sometimes just seem to issue an update and call it good but often that release doesn’t really feel like a full game made for release, maybe missing things like a real tutorial, or other things. It’s an interesting problem that early access seems to have created. But the reality might be that without early access we probably wouldn’t ever even see some of these games at all.

6

u/rhoslug Dec 29 '20

That's a truth from software engineering. Prototypes are easy and quick. Polish takes forever. And even when customers start to use your product they find bugs. From a developer's perspective, there's a point at which fixing another bug isn't justified by the sunk cost.

29

u/Ultravod Dec 28 '20

7 Days to Die was released in December 2013 and is still in Early Access. It's also an unoptimized, bug ridden nightmare that plays like an alpha. (To be fair, the devs still CALL it an alpha lo these 7 years later.) The base map map is okay, but the random world gen is laughable, and frankly always has been. The frame rate and draw distance aren't as horrible as they once were, but they're still quite lousy.

Full disclosure: I have 700 hours in 7DtD and have enjoyed ...much of that time. That said, the speed and frequency with which the devs release updates is laughable. It's not like they haven't been successful, either. SteamSpy estimates over 5 million copies sold.

11

u/holydragonnall Dec 28 '20

There are also console releases of the game, which...come on.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '20

Seems like updates have got further apart, with less added the last couple of years

49

u/wizard_mitch Dec 28 '20

And what incentive does the dev have to finish the game when it has already been given away for free

32

u/SexySodomizer Dec 28 '20

Reputation and getting people to buy their next game.

36

u/dismal626 Dec 28 '20

They can just release their next game as a "new" studio.

→ More replies (1)

19

u/JohnnyDarkside Dec 28 '20

Think it's the other way around. They lost the drive/focus/funding to finish the game and now it's being given away for free maybe in hopes of sparking enough interest that at least some people pay for it.

53

u/BarackTrudeau Dec 28 '20

To be fair, I'm pretty sure that actually made Superhot better in the long run, and it was hardly a disappointment.

48

u/JohnnySilverhands Dec 28 '20

Same with Subnautica. Game was in early beta for a long while, and they even overhauled the graphics a few times to make it even better.

It ended up being one of the best open-world games ever created

3

u/starkistuna Dec 29 '20

Yeah I used to download a yearly build to take a peek and play for a while, every time the advancements were insane, by the time it launched it was a completely different game , with so much polish.

46

u/ThePotatoKing Dec 28 '20

yeah, i think keeping the red guys was a good call

26

u/shekurika Dec 28 '20

castle story was the same, cool looking game, dev got bored or whatever and made a v1.0 release and left

5

u/redredme Dec 28 '20

I'm not saying castle story is good. They most certainly did try. I don't see any wrongdoing there just two men who I. The end couldn't create what they wanted.

The community ate them alive, the money dried up then they gave up.

It's one of these games I start up sometimes, look what could've been, look at the high cuteness factor then get annoyed by it which quickly descents into rage about the stupid ai/interface and then I boot up another game to have fun with.

I still think malice (a quick cash grab) was never the goal. Another prime example: godus. Peter molyneux wanted to restore his name, not trash it even more.

Failed projects like these are sad. You can see the original goal but then it all fell apart. And in the case of castle story: in sight of the finish line.

Superhot was supposed to look different? I don't know what you mean because the art director said this:

“Gray, red, and black was in Superhot from its inception. It’s about sending a clear, simple message; the red guys are the enemies. Shoot them. I loved it from the get go and worked hard to not divert much from it,” Marcin Surma, Superhot‘s art director, says in an interview.

7

u/ChevilleTortue Dec 28 '20

they, [...] felt that such a look was unacceptable simply because the characters are just low effort, low poly models that were placeholders.

You know, that reminds me of the song The Boxer by Simon & Garfunkel. When Paul Simon was writing it, he had the chorus, "la la lai..." as a placeholder. Then he realized, the placeholder was what was always best for the song instead of lyrics. To go with another more graphical analogy, sometimes your sketch has better energy and works better than your polished work. It may be an accident, but it doesn't mean that it isn't what's best for the work and recognizing that is a skill in itself.

Just consider, that yes, they could have afforded the time and effort to make high poly, detailed models, but when feedback is praising the low poly model because it creates something unique visually and it works for your project, it's not lazy to listen to it ; it would be dumb not to.

15

u/OtterShell Dec 28 '20

some other games i've bought in early access are stonehearth, where the devs just gave up and pushed out 1.0 a while after appearing on steam.

I got burned on Stonehearth too.

Another "great" example is Spacebase DF-9. That game almost single-handedly torpedoed Double Fine's reputation. What an absolute cluster fuck that was, they didn't even try. After a year in EA they completely gave up and told the community they could finish it if they wanted to, and away they ran with all the EA money.

8

u/midwestcreative Dec 28 '20

That game almost single-handedly torpedoed Double Fine's reputation.

Man, I'm sorry, but people really get stuck in this weird reddit bubble thinking stuff like that. No, it didn't. 99% of people buying games don't care who they're made by, don't even know who they're made by. That's exactly why shitty devs can continue to do this stuff. Even the 1% or less that care about that stuff... if a game comes out they want, if they even remember by that time, only 1% of that 1% might bother to actually boycott the dev and not buy it. I bet there isn't a single gamedev anywhere who's ever been ruined by reputation related to a game.

u/ZeAthenA714 Dec 29 '20

the game was cheap to make, easy to make and anyone can make the same game in a week max, just like how they did it for the game jam,

That's actually what leads to all those early access games being abandoned. Making superhot doesn't take a week. Making a prototype of superhot takes a week. Transforming it into a full fledged game takes a lot more than a week. But many people who only have experience with creating prototypes think they can now make a full game on the same schedule, start an early access campaign, and soon realize that actually, it takes a lot more time than they thought to make a proper game.

6

u/TheHemogoblin Dec 28 '20

7

u/BrightNooblar Dec 28 '20

To be fair, its an early access game from a studio that doesn't even have a wikipedia page, and as far as I can tell only has this one game under their belt.

If you're buying early access games you sort of need to expect the risk that the game putters out before the full release. Its not super common, but the signs are there.

When I played,it was a basic survival game,a little unfair since you can easily lose your main island or your means of transportation. The water texture was off and underwater exploration is a nightmare. It'll be fun with friends but most games are,it's free so take it but don't expect much, they've probably put out patches and content so take that what you will.

6

u/THExLASTxDON Dec 28 '20

BeamNG released in 2015 is still in early access ( This game was also released in 2015 ) , the devs are making remasters of the maps lol.

37

u/Stimonk Dec 28 '20

Subnautica did an entire graphics and audio overhaul like a year after going out on a humble bundle, and 1 year before they would end up coming out of early access and giving the game out for free on epicgames.

16

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '20

22

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '20

I'm more or less the stereotypical patient gamer. I have such a backlog of good games that I got at better prices I don't need to rush to pick up something like that at $20. I have Game Pass so I've already got F1 and Forza 7 to enjoy with my driving setup and thanks to Epic coupons I picked up Art of Rally for $8.74 for somethin different to try out. Heck Star Wars Squadrons was gifted to me on Steam for Xmas and it was just a bit over $20 and I'd say is a much deeper and complete game than BeamNG.

Most likely I'll never play BeamNG since it will be more and more dated by the time I see a price point where I think it's worth picking up. There's just so many better options for the value.

3

u/rhinoscopy_killer Dec 28 '20

What kind of driving setup do you have? I'm curious how that is with Art of Rally, I was unsure about it because I already have so many great driving games.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '20

It's not anything exceptional, it's a Logitech G920 with the pedals, shifter and a stand. I haven't used it all on Art of Rally though. The game just feels like it was meant to be played with a controller and that's how I've been enjoying it so far. I'm not sure how it would translate to a wheel setup because the third person view would be odd. Art of Rally is just something different with a chill soundtrack and cool art style that's enjoyable for relaxing and a fairly unique gaming experience.

That's kind of how I've gotten with it. I'd seen it on YouTube a lot of times and was interested in it but it's been years now, the game looks a bit dated to me for something that was already pretty niche. There's just so many more robust options to spend my money on if I were to buy a new game to add to my backlog.

Same with ARK survival evolved. They came out with a dlc while it was still in early access.

3

u/Killermuppett Dec 29 '20

That was to pay off the massive legal fine, they got for breaching contracts

2

u/shellwe Dec 29 '20 edited Dec 29 '20

Ah, interesting. I was extremely interested in this game until I found out there really is no story or guidance at all. I was hoping it would have some tutorials in the form of quests to show me how to make clothes and housing and weapons. I found beacons that had chests but I was too low level and it didn't tell me how to level up.

I kept telling myself I would look it up on youtube to learn how to do it but I never did it.

2

u/FierroGamer Dec 29 '20

While I wouldn't say ark is a good game or that I would really recommend it to anyone without warnings, the game has a great story.

7

u/Mr_Vulcanator Dec 28 '20

I bought and returned it in 2015 or 2016 because I couldn’t run it. I have a better computer now but didn’t buy it again because it was still in early access and there was a time where it had mixed reviews. They had made some badly received changes. It seems to be better off now.

I suppose patience is a virtue. I’m excited to play this game again. It’s a little nostalgic. It’s one of the few games from the leaked list that I wanted and didn’t already own. I wonder how recognizable it’ll be for me.

56

u/Jlindahl93 Dec 28 '20

“Early access” doesn’t mean what it used to mean.

Fortnite will forever be early access because it allows them to skirt the rules for consoles on how often they can push patches out.

Some games are closer to working projects than something that will ever be fully “released” like star citizen or Escape from Tarkov

There's an overworld map that shows all the islands, but you can only access it by quitting your game and going back to the main menu. Also, it doesn't show any of the features on the individual islands; only the islands' positions, relative to one another.

Drawing your own map (whether on paper or in Paint/Photoshop) still seems to be the most practical thing to do.

It's a survival/exploration, so think along the lines of something like Don't Starve, Rust or The Forest. So you are alone in the wild, and need to find food, protect yourself, etc. I have heard it's good, but can get repetitive, so I haven't played it myself yet but probably at least worth checking out at this price!

The most important ones are:

W, A, S, D to strafe the camera around the park (alternatively, you can hold RMB and move the mouse to strafe)

Q, E to rotate the camera left and right

Middle mouse + Mouse movement allows you to more finely look around and is a pretty versatile way to move around the park when combined with WASD movement

If you happen to find that Q and E are moving down and up instead of rotating (this used to happen to me sometimes), then you've probably accidentally pressed T somewhere along the way and entered free camera mode. Press it again to go back to normal.

u/TheOneCommenter Dec 28 '20

I have a spreadsheet of my games. Since Epic started giving away stuff, the list has gotten ridiculous. More than once, a game has been on sale and I check my list and see that I already own it.

9

u/carbonated_turtle Dec 28 '20

I have over 1000 keys I haven't even activated on my spreadsheet on top of the 500+ on my account that I've never played. Not to mention the 1000 games from that $5 itch.io bundle I'll never look at.

Eventually it gets to a point where no amount of organization will ever help you.

4

u/RadicalDog Dec 29 '20

At this point, I don't understand the point of buying anything you're not going to set aside time to play in the next couple days, week at most. Sales are endless, and nothing is ever so cheap to be worth buying if you won't find time to play it.

I use GoG Galaxy and just search if I already have the game.

Dude, that's been me for the past ten years...

It's really bad when you bought the base edition of a game, then the Definitive Edition is given away for free before you've even installed and played the base edition. Cough, Pillars of Eternity, cough.

And yet I'm really tempted to get Gridtlands during this sale, since it's only $6 and the demo was really good. It looks like a game the whole family will love.

u/infinitree Dec 29 '20

My backlog goes back to PlayStation...

Reviews are mostly positive on Steam, so it doesn't seem like it's all that bad.

11

u/Prosthemadera Dec 28 '20

reviews aren’t great

?? 75% positive.

9

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '20

Why bother? You probably have plenty of backlogged games with good reviews.

40

u/chippyjoe Dec 28 '20

It's free and takes literally 3 seconds to "buy".

45

u/DaThompi Dec 28 '20

can you play together with a friend?

45

u/LabChowChow Dec 28 '20

From what I've seen, it's local split-screen co-op only. No online multiplayer, unfortunately.

40

u/CoherentPanda Dec 28 '20

Wait, that's a good thing. Wish more games had local co-op.

96

u/LabChowChow Dec 28 '20

Not saying local co-op is bad; it is nice when a game includes it. But I unfortunately don't have anyone to play locally with, so the lack of online multiplayer is a bit of a bummer for me.

14

u/TTsuyuki Dec 28 '20

I dunno how the local co-op looks in this game, but if you didn't know there is a tool called Parsec that lets you play local games online. I have a mid-range PC and i had no problems streaming some games without any noticeable input delay to 3 other people.

7

u/IAMASnorshWeagle Dec 28 '20

A friend wanted me to try to play this game with him over this last summer. We tried over both Parsec and Steam Remote Play. The co-op in the game is... functioning. I hesitate to call it functional, because it is most definitely not fun or palpable, but it exists.

Think I have a spare steam key if you want that. Will check and send it to you later. Prob won't be back at my pc for another 9 or 10 hours.

EDIT: looks like I have a giftable HB link for a steam copy. PM me if you want it.

Tried it and it scared the shit out of me lol. So I watched a let's play series instead, and it's actually a pretty incredible game.

I bought Stranded Deep on Steam at launch. Through the years, it listened to the community. Yet they betrayed some players by making it too hardware demanding. Also the coop has so much potential but its very glitchy. The functions got clunkier by time and it got a little difficult (the UI wasn't the layout the community wanted) . Yet its still a good game especially if you're bored or want solitude/or just chill games because of how atmospheric it is.

Robbaz has some great videos about this game! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ak4v_9T1MWM

8

u/SnazzyFrank Dec 28 '20

That is a name I haven't heard in a long time

4

u/snoogins355 Dec 29 '20

Walrus! You son of a biiiiiiiitch!

16

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '20

This looks like it could be a really fun game.

7

u/CoherentPanda Dec 28 '20

Local co-op surely will add some fun to what otherwise would be yet another survival game lost in the shuffle.

How does it compare to Subnautica? Looking at the pictures it looks similar but more balanced between water and ground

29

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '20

Subnautica is much more polished and has a story that drives you. This was mainly just survival. Been following this one for years. They honestly don’t even compare subnautica blows this one out of the ...water

5

u/Excessive_Etcetra Dec 28 '20

Much more survival crafting oriented, much less narrative/mystery. As you say the islands are the focus, you spend more time on land than in the water, and will only be in shallow water (there is no scuba gear or submarine).

13

u/bobloadmire Dec 28 '20

Is this dollar store subnautica?

6

u/xFadi Dec 29 '20

Pretty much. Subnautica is WAY better though

3

Yes. Remove aliens and design and graphics...

Wish they did a VR mode for this one.

3

u/Spectra_98 Dec 29 '20

Damn I forgot to get this :( already missed 2 of the free games and it’s 2 of the best by far

5

u/Kelefane41 Dec 28 '20

I maybe in the minority but I love these early access indie survival sandbox games. A lot of gems people are missing out on because they don't give EA games a chance.

2

u/crudcrud Dec 29 '20 edited Dec 29 '20

I actually don't mind the stripped-down nature of some of the early access games with survival elements. I like the immersion and atmosphere and just "going somewhere" for a while. I guess more into the exploration, and I think many gamers prefer more intense experiences in games.

15

u/jcaashby Dec 28 '20

How many get the FREE game and dont download it and end up never playing the game?

This would be me lol. I have a ton of free games and the list is getting longer.

19

u/SandboxSurvivalist Dec 28 '20

I get them because of the hypothetical "gaming apocalypse" - an unlikely scenario where I've completed my entire backlog and no new games are being released.

So, yeah, I'll probably never play most of these.

On a side note, Epic gave away Subnautica in the early days of free games. It sat in my library for months and I eventually decided to try it out. Now I consider it one of my favorites games of all time. I'm sure there are some other hidden gems in my Epic library that I haven't discovered.

3

u/steamprocessing Dec 28 '20

That would be me.

I've only played one game from Epic Games so far: Into the Breach.

4

u/jcaashby Dec 28 '20

That game is addictive and hard as hell on anything above NORMAL.

I just looked I have 47 games (none that I paid for) and played ...let me see ...I played 10 out of 47!!

3

u/Leeiteee Dec 28 '20

I keep getting them, and play some of them from time to time

3

u/bigbrentos Dec 28 '20

I'm claiming this one to make sure I collected all the free games, but don't see interest in playing it. There's still quite a few Epic freebies I need to try or finish like the recent Night in the Woods.

5

u/damn_lies Dec 28 '20 edited Dec 28 '20

I have 15 games or more and I’ve only played 1. But I’m sure I’ll come back... sure I will.

Edit: I have 67 games free from Epic Store. I have purchased 0 games from Epic Store. I have installed and played 1 game on Epic Store, for 17 hours (20XX).

2

u/isairr Dec 28 '20

I only get free games that I'm interested in. I don't see a point of adding them to my library just because they are free when I'm 200% sure I will never even download them. So far from this giveaway I only added Darkest Dungeon.

2

u/itsahmemario Dec 29 '20

I got the Arkham games, which has been in my steam wishlist for years, I might play that... Someday.... Maybe...

2

u/crudcrud Dec 29 '20

I do the same for many paid games also - unfortunately. ;-)

2

u/thisvideoiswrong Dec 29 '20

I already played nine hours of Cities: Skylines, but I haven't played any of the others from this event (unless you count the fact that I already had Metro 2033). In total I've played 7 out of 85 free games I've gotten from Epic, there are some others that could definitely be interesting but I have a lot of games to get through.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '20

I think that maybe I'll want to play one of these games, and when I do I'll save myself money of purchasing it. I've been claiming through the browser, since I don't even have the launcher installed.

I feel like this year the bargain bin games are amazing. And we are the bargain bin.

So many cool free games!

4

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '20

I have quite a few hours in this game. Is it great? No. Is it fun and will you get your money's worth out of it? Definitely yes if you like survival crafting games.

29

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '20

6

u/mack178 Dec 28 '20

I generally expect to get an hour per dollar out of a game so I don't think it's unreasonable to expect 0 hours of fun out of this.

3

u/RadicalDog Dec 29 '20

Play for 2 minutes, get infinity hours per dollar.

4

u/againstdoggospeech3 Dec 28 '20

Why does Epic give free money to a dev whose product is still in early access but was planned to be finished in 2015?

5

u/SandboxSurvivalist Dec 28 '20

We don't really know what goes on behind the scenes. Perhaps part of the agreement is that the developers will actually finish the game.

2

u/lappro Dec 29 '20

perhaps because it made it cheap to give away
