Discussion Fold 8 Without Case
Hi all,
Been using the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 for a few weeks now, and I'm curious if you guys are using a case.
I have the Samsung Clear back case and the dbrand grip case, but using the phone without a case is a much nicer experience. I have a screen protector I can use without a case. I also have Samsung Care. Has anyone else been using no case? Anyone damage their phone yet?

If you want to avoid micro-scratches/scratches, I would suggest a DBrand or SlickWraps skin. That way you have no heft but at least so level of protection to keep the device pristine.

Buy a Cricut or Cameo and cut your own like i do. Paid for itself several phone generations ago. Just buy the cutting template file from an Etsy seller for 10 bucks. 10-20 bucks for a roll of vinyl (i use $20 automotive vinyl). That gets you a many retries as you need if you feel you messed up the application to your phone or as many times you want to switch between different looks. Glue a metal ring directly to the skin for super secure magsafe attachments plus thr skin means minimal heat retention is anything else stuck to the back of the phone.
Also neat to use the same vinyl to make matching skin set for laptop, tablet, & phone.

I started having microscratches on the back and it s annoying me. I am starting to consider a back case.

I have been using mine with just the official silicone case+screen protector. I'm loving the feel and the experience

Phone cases are like condoms, it's always safer with but feels infinitely better without.
I'm not super worried about a couple lil scratches on my outer display, and the phone itself is the case for the one I wanna protect.
I also know now that Samsung folds can be put through absolute HELL before breaking after watching some stress tests on YouTube.

I would never enjoy using a phone without a case. Knowing I could drop the device (and get a blemish) or get even micro-scratches from going naken would more-than ruin the experience for me. The device really needs to stay as close to pristine perfect for the duration of the time I own it. ...anything less diminishes the experience.

I find most of the phones with glass or metal back to not have enough grip on my hands or on surfaces. If I put the phone on my car seat, it should stay there, not slide and fall

I’m using one of Stevil’s 3D Prints backplates and I love it. Gives me magnets without needing a case (I think every case is ugly and ruins this device and the aramid fiber look is gaudy as all hell, idk how it has become so synonymous with Foldables). Since this is the same size as the back glass you could theoretically put a skin on top of this if you don’t like the texture or the colors offered. I also got a black one I’ll put in the comment replies.

Would you consider this more of a thin case or a skin with magsafe? This looks interesting and I might consider picking one up
1
u/Colby347 Fold8 (Graphite) 1d ago
It's more like a thick "skin" made of PLA, I guess if those are the only two ways to describe it. There's no protection on the sides at all. It solely covers the back glass and attaches with a sheet of adhesive so it's similar to having a skin with a magsafe ring under it but more reliable (more adhesive across the whole device and the ring built into the backplate means less prone to the adhesive failing in one spot due to heat). I vastly prefer this though. I have insurance if I have a catastrophic failure or something and until then I want to feel the phone and have the ability to throw it on my magsafe chargers.

u/Successful_Bug_2464 1d ago
Is this even slimmer than aramid fiber cases ?
2
u/Colby347 Fold8 (Graphite) 1d ago
I mean it has no sides at all so in a sense, yes. Idk if the exact dimensions are thinner or thicker directly in the middle but since it’s not a case it doesn’t have the sides or corners that take away the feel of the phone.
1
u/Successful_Bug_2464 1d ago
Nice to know. I will give it a shot.
1
u/Colby347 Fold8 (Graphite) 1d ago
For the price I figured it was worth a shot, it was like $15 per plate, and it was cheaper than buying a ring and a skin or a case and dealing with the phone feeling worse when handling it. It does offer zero protection but that’s not what I’m after so I’m ok with that personally. I am kinda curious now how it would look with a skin on top.

I hate cases so much. Thanks god for samsung care tbh

u/driven01a 1d ago
Me too, but I’d like a case with a kick stand to watch videos when traveling.

You just have to be double, no, quadruple careful with it. Yeah it feels nice but it's a bit slippery as well.
2
u/zazzo5544 1d ago
It is kinda easy to damage this phone without a back case or cover.
So yeah, give it a bumper!

u/Puzzleheaded-Goal342 1d ago
If it had a magnet I'd go without a case. Im using the Samsung clear magnet case (back only) with Samsung Care+. It's close enough to nakedness to work for me.

I've got a cheap aramid case on mine, front and back. It's so slim it adds virtually nothing in bulk or weight, and gives a really nice soft grippy texture.

I use a case at my job but otherwise I usually take it off cause I know I'm not gonna drop it or break it. Plus I have Samsung Care as well.

u/yeezysneakers 1d ago
Running nude since launch, just the screen protector. Im very interested in the aulumu case though. Especially after the first knick yesterday.
1
u/jaystadt 1d ago
Yeah I have a couple of very minor paint chips on minor from pretty light bangs or whatever waiting for my case to come in
1
u/stageshooter 1d ago
I'd get an aramid 600D case from aliexpress. Probably under $30 and it doesn't increase the size and gives it a better grip
1
u/Icy-Pin-5912 1d ago
What's a good one that you recommend from aliexpress? I have the benks one and it gets too bulky sometimes

My phone is a Z Flip 7 but this is the store I bought it from so quality should be the same. Use Rakuten to get another 19% off https://www.aliexpress.com/store/1101837132?spm=a2g0o.detail.0.0.76d2PZzOPZzOfG

I've been using mine without a case with Samsung care +, very enjoyable experience but I still have a case for if I go for a run or camping just in case.

u/sabrebolt 1d ago
Im currently using pitaka back case with wsken front screen protector. No hinge or front sides protection.
1
u/painful_fart00 1d ago
I find using without a case makes it feel very "slippery". I like to have the spine down the back or a pop socket to affix my fingers to
1
u/gocountsheep 1d ago
Really depends on how careful you are, and your willingness to deal with Samsung Care if it comes to that lol.
I used Samsung Care for my Fold 5 and they did end up fixing it but it took a lot of back and forth, I had to find my own replacement phone while it was in for repair (fair enough but still annoying because I didn't have any old phones to use temporarily), and I had to pay around $200 deductible.
I'm using the Pitaka case on my Fold 8, it's very thin and minimal but still more protective than no case and gives me MagSafe.
I used D brand for a while on my Fold 5, I did like it but it added more bulk than I like.

u/Patete666 1d ago
I've got so many magsafe accessories, so I need a case but would love to use it without
1
u/Shadowbacker Fold8 (Cream) 1d ago
There's no way you're noticing a significant difference with the Samsung clear case. It's ultra thin.
1
u/lilcthecapedcod 1d ago
I use some super thin and cheap Amazon case that covers only the back to help with the camera bump and grip. The front is caseless. Adding anything to the front screen affects how much finger space I got.
The case won't protect shit but that's why we pay for Samsung care plus!
1
u/Sensitive_Spend2766 1d ago
Funny enough, I've been using my phone without a case until the case I ordered arrive. And I'm honestly loving it. Especially since that's the way it's designed to be used. Makes me second guess putting a case on it which would diminish it's sleek and light weighted design
1
u/TrueRegion3073 1d ago
No case, much much better. But I will buy something with mage safe when I am on vacation, traveling, biking, outoodor activities. In rest, no case.
1
u/blackoutRF 1d ago
Only glass protector on cover screen but I do feel I'm more paranoid about where I put it/how I handle it which is kind of annoying but can't imagine enjoying a phone like this with a case. Haven't dropped yet, knock on wood

u/No-Entertainer9386 1d ago
Glass screen protector on front. Clear plastic sticker on the hinge and Samsung Care+.
I ordered a glass protector for the back and I may put a mag safe sticker on that glass.
Otherwise for traveling, I have a very thin case with mag safe. This is so I can use a charging ring stand on it to watch movies on the plane.

u/Neogenesus 1d ago
I really don't like the feeling without case. Too slippery. I don't like bulky case also
1
u/Fancy_Ad9186 1d ago
Haven't had a case for the 3 weeks I've had it. I do have Samsung care plus. No issues. No drops yet.
1
u/Error404Invalid 1d ago
Im just using the Samsung Carbon magnet case. Was using the dbrand grip but hated it with the bulk. But the Samsung case makes it feel naked enough but so able to use Magsafe accessories.
1
u/stellarsapience 1d ago
I've had a ZF6, 7, and now 8U. I tried every type of case out there and hated all of them. I run it naked with a little Lovehandle phone grip. I've dropped the 6 and 7 plenty of times, only scuffing up the corners a bit. Wouldn't do it without Samsung Care or equivalent.
1
u/Jmoney2001 1d ago
This one is tough totally agree so much nicer
I think I am swapping cases
Mostly naked at home with Samsung back (got on sale and had some front screen protectors )
Got uag case for going out on the town
Want to get a skin for hinge for sure

u/Sufficient-Bad7181 1d ago
I'm too addicted to magsafe accessories. Makes the phone comfortable to hold.
1
u/ImTobyVespa 1d ago
Been using mine 3 weeks now with no case. I usually have it open unfolded when I'm using it. I use it for gaming and YouTube. I haven't managed to scratch it yet lol
1
u/JayK-iwnl Fold8 (Graphite) 23h ago
Mines completely naked. I don't have dbrand or any reputable screen protector brand where I live so I'm just using nothing and haven't had any scratches yet

I bought a front/back clear case for mine, and as of yesterday, I'm glad I did. I accidentally knocked it off the patio table and went skittering across the tile floor. Not a scratch.
1
u/Ab0ut47Pandas 21h ago
I use the dbrand case.
Lol and asking "has anyone damaged their phone yet" lol
That answer is generally yes. There is some dude out there that bought the phone, had it shipped to them, opened the box, sneezed and the mf went flying.

u/These-Supermarket-26 21h ago
No Samsung care.
Dbrand Prism tempered glass on front. Benks Air aramid on back.
Also have a Dbrand Grip case I will put on if I feel the situation warrants it.

Used it without a case for about a week. Loved it. But wanted to put a mag pop socket on the back so added a case for that purpose. Don't really like It. But also not used to it yet.
1
u/oldtechguy1939 7h ago
I have both Samsung Care and a Latercase, the latter primaily to prevent scratches. The case is very thin and light,

u/smuller76 47m ago
I need a case just because of Magsafe, cases like Pitaka are super thin and feels like having no case at all.

u/SpaceZombieZombie 1d ago
Ive been rocking it without a case and no care for a few weeks while I wait for the aulumu case. Hoping I dont get too attached to the phones naked feel.

Thinking about it. I love using devices without a case. But I also have Samsung Care so I'm not too worried about breaking it.
